- Hey everybody, this is SuChin Pak
[4]
with MTV News here in Toronto, Canada,
[6]
on the set of 50's very first movie
[9]
'Get Rich or Die Tryin'.'
[10]
In fact, they're shooting a club scene just behind me
[12]
and you know we're the first ones on set.
[14]
And if you're wondering
[15]
whether or not he could pull this off,
[17]
50 has some words for you.
[24]
- All right, so I was trying to do research
[26]
about the film and there's very little out there.
[28]
So I want to know everything I can possibly know.
[31]
What, first of all, what is the actual title of the film?
[34]
Do we have an official?
[35]
- The title is 'Get Rich or Die Tryin'.'
[37]
- Yeah.
[38]
- And you know, it made sense enough to me
[42]
to do it because so many people always associate that title
[46]
'Get Rich or Die Tryin'' with me as an artist.
[50]
And we talked about it,
[51]
we went through a ton of titles,
[54]
like, so, many different things.
[55]
We went from 'Locked and Loaded' to 'Hustler's Ambition',
[60]
and there were so many other ideas for it,
[63]
and then 'Get Rich or Die Tryin''
[64]
just felt like the simple way to resolve it.
[66]
- [SuChin] Now, how did the whole project
[67]
even come together?
[68]
Was it something where you wanted to do this film
[71]
and you brought it and you got everybody together?
[74]
Did they come to you?
[75]
- Yeah, well actually I spoke...
[77]
It was me and Jimmy Iovine, and then Paul Rosenberg,
[82]
you know, got involved.
[83]
It's great, I got a great team.
[84]
And we met with Jim Sheridan first,
[88]
And afterwards we began developing the script.
[91]
- [Crew Member] Like, walk and talk to the set
[93]
maybe as you go, you show her where are you going and stuff?
[96]
- [50 Cent] Okay.
[97]
- [50 Cent] Then, when we come–
[98]
- [50 Cent] Y'all gonna leave after this?
[99]
- [SuChin] No, no, no we're staying here all day.
[102]
- [50 Cent] So I show you outside.
[105]
- So what is this?
[107]
Your traveling...
[108]
- Yeah, this is, like, –
[109]
- Music studio?
[110]
- My traveling music studio.
[111]
So I get a chance to take y'all in there,
[112]
show you how I'm gonna record the soundtrack to this film.
[115]
- All day you film and you're working all day
[118]
and then you come here to work on the soundtrack.
[120]
- Yeah.
[121]
Right now it's lunch.
[122]
So I will be going back here.
[123]
- No time for eating or sleeping or?
[126]
- Regular people eat and sleep.
[128]
(SuChin laughs)
[130]
- [SuChin] Okay.
[133]
Wow.
[136]
It's a whole studio in here on wheels, huh?
[138]
- This is where I make music while I'm on set.
[141]
- Yeah.
[142]
All right, so you're working on the soundtrack, obviously
[144]
while you're filming. That's probably
[146]
a really good way to work on a soundtrack.
[148]
'Cause you're sort of there.
[149]
- Yeah, while I'm in character.
[150]
I'm writing the songs in characters.
[152]
It's just different.
[154]
- [SuChin] What does that mean?
[155]
I mean, tell me about the character.
[156]
- I'm writing things that Marcus would say
[157]
opposed to the things that 50 Cent would say.
[160]
I'm writing it as Marcus.
[162]
I gotta create records to actually have substance
[169]
that comes from the actual films,
[171]
opposed to material I'm gonna create as 50 Cent
[175]
and what goes on in my life regularly.
[177]
- [SuChin] Is that constricting?
[179]
Or is it actually liberating?
[180]
- [50 Cent] It's constricting
[181]
but because you're using your imagination
[183]
to find what will go on,
[185]
and then it's kind of broad to kind of go wherever you want.
[189]
- [SuChin] So what do you think?
[190]
You're gonna win an Oscar?
[193]
- Well, I think anything's possible.
[194]
I think I want a trophy.
[197]
- [Crew Member] I think they gonna get him out,
[198]
just show the booth quickly
[199]
so they know he's rapping here too.
[201]
- [SuChin] Okay.
[202]
- You getting this? Are you gettin' this?
[203]
- [Crew Member] I'm getting this.
[203]
(SuChin laughs)
[205]
- Okay, right this right here says "Da Club" right here.
[206]
I put that there for short for "In da Club."
[208]
That's the joint that made all of this stuff possible.
[210]
I'm gonna show you, this the booth.
[211]
- Can I go in?
[212]
- Look, bam, it's the soundproof booth.
[215]
And that's how it looks, when you're in there.
[218]
- All right, so let's talk about this film.
[219]
What, who do you play?
[221]
And what is sort of the plotline of the film?
[225]
- Well, I play Charlene,
[226]
who is a childhood friend of Marcus, who is 50 Cent.
[231]
And she moves away when she's young and he sees her,
[236]
she resurfaces like 10 years later or so,
[238]
and then they, you know, get together.
[242]
So that's the love story line.
[244]
Kind of you know, it's included in the whole gangster world
[247]
and you know, they have a baby, you know, that whole thing.
[251]
So she's just the girl from the hood that was sent away
[256]
but actually came back
[257]
and ended up right where her parents didn't want her to be.
[260]
- What was your initial reaction
[262]
when this project was approached?
[264]
- Well, when it was approached,
[266]
it was approached with the whole thing of, you know,
[268]
50's life story which, you know, we kind of,
[270]
we know the whole thing about him getting shot nine times.
[273]
But I wasn't aware of exactly his entire story
[277]
and where he came from,
[278]
how he came up and stuff, and then the facts.
[281]
So that was really interesting.
[281]
Then the fact that Jim Sheridan was attached to it,
[285]
I mean, who wouldn't want to work with him?
[288]
- So when you're working on a scene,
[290]
what scene actually are you working on today?
[292]
- There's a club scene.
[293]
It's actually so rapid and dangerous in the film.
[299]
And I kind of write a diss record
[302]
that kind of ruins his career.
[304]
