Laws Matter: Facts Contradict Gun Lobby's Lie That Regulation Can't Stop Gun Violence - YouTube
Channel: MSNBC
[1]
this is texas governor greg abbott in
[4]
june of last year signing seven laws
[6]
that made it easier to own a gun in
[9]
texas that was all part of a slew of
[11]
legislation that he signed loosening gun
[13]
restrictions in the state and one of the
[14]
laws makes it legal to carry handguns in
[17]
public without a license for anyone over
[20]
21. now prior to that texans needed to
[22]
take a four to six hour training course
[25]
they had to pass a written exam they had
[27]
to pass a shooting proficiency exam or
[30]
at least demonstrate that they have
[31]
shooting proficiency avid signature
[34]
eliminated all of that another one of
[36]
those laws declare texas a sanctuary
[38]
state for guns which basically forbids
[40]
local agencies from enforcing federal
[43]
gun laws so perhaps it is fitting that
[46]
this week on friday
[48]
greg abbott is scheduled to speak at a
[51]
big nra forum in houston a forum on
[54]
legislative action
[55]
other notable speakers on the schedule
[57]
for that event are donald trump who is
[59]
the headliner of course senator john
[60]
cornyn and senator ted cruz although
[63]
tonight senator cornyn's office told nbc
[65]
news that he is no longer attending that
[67]
forum they say his cancellation
[70]
has nothing to do with the shooting he
[72]
just has to be in dc for personal
[74]
reasons on friday
[75]
as far as we know abbott and trump and
[77]
cruz are all still planning to attend it
[80]
and who knows maybe they are going to
[81]
use the opportunity to advocate for
[84]
i don't know simple common sense gun
[87]
control laws maybe
[88]
i don't know maybe they'll do it
[90]
directly to the nra itself but i got to
[92]
be honest with you i don't think so i
[94]
mean listen to what senator ted cruz had
[96]
to say this afternoon
[99]
you know inevitably when there's a
[101]
murder of this kind uh you see
[103]
politicians try to try to politicize it
[106]
uh you see democrats and a lot of folks
[108]
in the media whose immediate solution is
[110]
to try to
[112]
restrict the constitutional rights of
[115]
law-abiding citizens that doesn't work
[117]
it's not effective it doesn't prevent
[119]
crime
[120]
we know what does prevent crime which is
[122]
going after felons and fugitives and
[124]
those with serious mental illness
[127]
arresting them prosecuting them when
[129]
they try to illegally buy firearms
[133]
here's an idea senator
[135]
texas currently does not require
[137]
background checks for guns sold or
[138]
traded at gun shows so if you want to
[141]
prevent felons from getting their hands
[143]
on guns
[144]
fixing that sounds like
[147]
a layup i mean the reality here is it is
[149]
incredibly easy to access a gun
[152]
perfectly legally in texas that's the
[154]
truth the giffords law center to prevent
[157]
gun violence gives texas gun laws
[159]
an f
[161]
literally an f they point out that it is
[163]
so easy to get guns in texas that gangs
[166]
actually smuggle them across the border
[169]
into mexico they buy them in texas
[171]
smuggle them into mexico that's how easy
[173]
it is to get them in texas
[175]
texas state senator ronda gutierrez told
[177]
nbc news tonight that in a briefing with
[179]
texas state rangers rangers said that
[182]
the shooter in uvalde purchased two
[184]
assault rifles on his 18th birthday
[186]
legally
[188]
the shooter turned 18 last monday
[190]
now here we are today
[194]
laws
[195]
matter
[196]
joining us now is robin thomas executive
[199]
director at the giffords law center to
[200]
prevent gun violence robin thank you so
[202]
much for joining us this evening i know
[204]
it has been a long day for you and
[206]
everyone else
[208]
prior to today two of the deadliest mass
[210]
shootings in the past decade sutherland
[212]
springs in 2017 and el paso in 2019 they
[215]
both unfortunately happened in texas and
[217]
yet republicans in texas they're still
[220]
totally obsessed with making texas as
[222]
legally pro-gun
[224]
as possible how do you understand that i
[227]
mean how is this still a winning issue
[229]
for them politically when their
[230]
constituents are being killed and
[232]
they're trying to make it easier to get
[234]
guns in their state
[236]
well part of it is exactly what ted cruz
[238]
was just talking about which is that
[241]
for one thing politicians are in the
[243]
pocket of the nra and the gun lobby and
[246]
special interests they don't represent
[248]
the interests of their constituents they
[250]
don't act in the interests of public
[251]
safety they do what the lobbyists tell
[254]
them to do and in part they get away
[256]
with it because they're willing to lie i
[258]
mean most of what ted cruz just said is
[261]
simply not true but because he doesn't
[263]
get called out with the facts he's able
[266]
to somehow convince people that these
[268]
laws don't matter and as you so
[270]
correctly pointed out of course laws
[272]
matter texas gun death rate is far
[275]
higher than california's where we have
[277]
much more comprehensive gun regulation
[279]
laws matter very much but if people
[281]
don't believe that if they don't see it
[283]
if they aren't given good information by
[285]
the people who represent them then they
[287]
might not may not be aware they buy this
[289]
ridiculous argument about the good guy
[291]
with the gun being the solution as
[293]
opposed to smart regulation every other
[296]
country in the world has somehow figured
[299]
out
[302]
and they point to chicago and say that
[303]
oh you know chicago or illinois have
[305]
some of the toughest gun restriction
[306]
laws but the gun violence in chicago
[308]
maine is con continually is high and gun
[311]
violence uh is skyrocketing
[314]
and part of the reason for that is
[316]
because we have poorest state borders
[318]
that's why we need federal reform
[320]
because all of those illegal guns that
[322]
are being found in the city of chicago
[324]
the guns that are being found in
[325]
washington dc and new york city they're
[328]
coming from states with weak gun laws in
[331]
the same way that the gangs in texas in
[333]
mexico are coming to texas to buy guns
[335]
because the laws are so weak it's the
[338]
same thing in chicago these guns are
[339]
being trafficked from states like
[341]
indiana where there are weak laws and
[343]
it's very very easy to just bring the
[345]
guns into the city of chicago
[349]
i gotta ask you i mean it is a
[350]
well-known it is well known excuse me
[353]
that you know before the end of june the
[354]
supreme court uh will decide not just
[357]
the future of roe versus wade but most
[360]
americans actually don't realize that
[361]
the court will also have a major ruling
[364]
on a gun control case the court's first
[367]
major second amendment case i would say
[369]
in more than a decade what's at stake in
[371]
that case and how will it impact states
[373]
ability to impose common-sense gun
[375]
restrictions since it has to do with new
[378]
york
[379]
so that case involves the restrictions
[383]
that new york city places on who can
[386]
carry loaded concealed weapons in public
[388]
and for people who've spent time in new
[390]
york city i think it makes a lot of
[392]
sense that we would they wouldn't want a
[394]
lot of loaded concealed weapons on in
[395]
the streets of such a crowded busy
[398]
chaotic city and that law which had
[401]
those sort of requirements for what it
[404]
takes to get a permit to carry a loaded
[406]
weapon in new york is what's being
[407]
challenged now if that law is struck
[409]
down not only will it allow more people
[412]
to carry loaded weapons in cities like
[414]
new york but it will also impact the
[416]
laws in other states that have similar
[419]
types of requirements and restrictions
[420]
like california and hawaii and new
[422]
jersey and a whole slew of other states
[425]
so it challenges that sort of we call it
[427]
a permanent system around concealed
[430]
weapons
[431]
the bigger concern is what else the
[433]
court is going to say in that decision
[434]
now they could keep it pretty narrow
[436]
just strike down new york's law which
[438]
just means there needs to be a new law
[440]
put in place that complies with the
[441]
decision or they could make broad
[443]
sweeping statements about what kinds of
[446]
gun laws are permissible and what
[448]
standards are applied to the
[450]
interpretation of gun laws and that's
[452]
what we've sort of worried about we
[454]
expect it to be not too broad but it's
[456]
hard to say with this court after what
[458]
we read a few weeks ago with this roe
[460]
versus wade decision
[463]
yeah absolutely especially with the
[465]
super conservative majority that it has
[467]
robin thomas executive director at the
[468]
giffords law center to prevent gun
[470]
violence thank you so much for your time
[472]
i greatly appreciate your insights
