Channel: LYFE Accounting
[0]
why should you never ask a dog for an estimate聽
on your taxes because it's always rough聽聽
[7]
hey guys today we're talking about the estimated聽
tax penalty because it's a sneaky penalty聽聽
[12]
and most people don't even realize what it is and聽
it can cost you thousands and thousands of dollars聽聽
[19]
as your income increases and of course聽
we want to do everything that we can to聽聽
[24]
make sure that we're minimizing your tax聽
liability so in this video we're going聽聽
[28]
to talk about everything you need to know聽
about the estimated tax penalty stay tuned聽聽
[41]
hey i'm shawn with life accounting the accounting聽
firm that saves people from high taxes and poor聽聽
[46]
profits and one of the ways that we help people聽
is making sure that they avoid the estimated聽聽
[51]
tax penalty now some people see this on their tax聽
return every year and just think that it's another聽聽
[56]
required payment to the irs but the estimated tax聽
penalty is something that you do not need to pay聽聽
[63]
and can be completely avoided so right now we're聽
going to explain what you need to know about the聽聽
[68]
estimated tax penalty so you can start saving聽
more on your annual tax returns also i'm going聽聽
[74]
to show you what you need to know to calculate聽
and pay your federal estimated taxes but before聽聽
[80]
i dive in if you like business growth profits聽
and you learn just one thing from this video聽聽
[86]
would you please consider liking and subscribing聽
to our channel okay now let's go ahead and start聽聽
[92]
out by defining what is an estimated tax payment聽
so if you're self-employed then generally you're聽聽
[99]
required to pay your taxes four times a year聽
what sean you mean i have to pay my taxes聽聽
[106]
four times instead of one oh no man no way i'm out聽
now hold on your total tax liability won't change聽聽
[114]
but rather you need to split it up and just make聽
some more payments so say for example your tax聽聽
[119]
liability last year was ten thousand dollars聽
so if you expect your liability to be the same聽聽
[125]
this year then you'll take that ten thousand聽
dollars divide it by four and pay twenty five聽聽
[130]
hundred dollars four times throughout the year聽
now the reason is called estimated tax payments is聽聽
[136]
because you're estimating how much income you're聽
gonna make this year and then paying taxes on that聽聽
[143]
amount so another popular question is do i have聽
to make these estimated tax payments so if you聽聽
[149]
fell under a business classification like a sole聽
proprietorship a partnership a s corporation or a聽聽
[155]
self-employed individual and you owe more than one聽
thousand dollars in taxes then in general you will聽聽
[161]
need to make quarterly payments to the irs but if聽
you're simply a w-2 employee then generally you聽聽
[168]
don't need to make any estimated tax payments聽
because your employer will handle those tax聽聽
[173]
payments for you but if you're doing any kind of聽
business whether you're doing some freelance stuff聽聽
[179]
some contractor stuff or you're self-employed聽
then you're likely going gonna make some tax聽聽
[184]
payments however there are three super specific聽
instances where you may not need to pay any聽聽
[191]
estimated tax payments and so you must meet these聽
three requirements all together number one you聽聽
[197]
didn't owe any taxes in the previous tax year聽
and you were not required to file a tax return聽聽
[204]
number two you were a u.s citizen or resident聽
for the entire year and number three your tax聽聽
[211]
year was at least 12 months long so as long聽
as you meet these three requirements then you聽聽
[218]
can completely avoid the estimated tax penalty聽
but that is a very small percentage of people聽聽
[225]
who will actually qualify okay so now that we know聽
what estimated tax penalties are and who has to聽聽
[231]
pay the next question usually is when are they due聽
so as we already explained tax payments are due聽聽
[238]
four times a year and usually is due on the聽
15th of the next quarter so in the beginning聽聽
[244]
of 2020 the schedule was set up like this for the聽
period of january 1st to 31st the quarterly tax聽聽
[251]
payment was due on april 15 2020 for the period of聽
april 1st to may 31st the payment was due june 15聽聽
[259]
2020 for the period of june 1st to august 31st聽
the payment was due on september 15th and for聽聽
[266]
september 1st to december 31st the payment is聽
due january 15 2021. now it's a smart idea to聽聽
[274]
put some of these due dates in your calendar聽
so you can make these payments on time or even聽聽
[281]
a little bit before but as of right now they've聽
only extended two out of the four estimated tax聽聽
[287]
payments due dates and i'm gonna put on the聽
screen what the schedule looks like right now
[295]
okay so we understand what estimated tax payments聽
are we know who has to pay them and now we know聽聽
[302]
when they need to be paid okay okay sean that聽
makes sense so exactly how much are we talking聽聽
[309]
here how much do i have to pay okay so let's get聽
to that of course this is going to be different聽聽
[314]
for everyone but i want to spend some time聽
breaking down the map as simply as possible now聽聽
[320]
to illustrate we're going to make up a fictional聽
person who we're just going to call jimmy and聽聽
[325]
jimmy is a sole proprietor who would like to聽
determine his estimated quarterly tax payments聽聽
[331]
based on his income and his self-employed taxes聽
so step number one for jimmy is to estimate his聽聽
[337]
taxable income for the year so let's say that聽
jimmy estimates that his revenue will be a聽聽
[343]
hundred thousand dollars this year but with that聽
revenue comes some expenses so let's say that he聽聽
[348]
has thirty thousand dollars in deductible expenses聽
so jimmy's gross income would be seventy thousand聽聽
[355]
dollars but jimmy also qualifies for the standard聽
deduction which is twelve thousand and two hundred聽聽
[361]
dollars so jimmy's total taxable income is 57 800聽
so that's how jimmy will come up with his total聽聽
[369]
taxable income for step number one which by the聽
way if you want to learn more about small business聽聽
[375]
tax deductions then make sure you watch my video聽
linked above step number two is to calculate聽聽
[380]
your income taxes so here you want to start by聽
multiplying your taxable income by this year's聽聽
[387]
tax bracket and here they are for 2020 so is a聽
single filer and an income of fifty seven thousand聽聽
[394]
eight hundred dollars he's going to go up to the聽
22 percent tax bracket and pay about 7518 dollars聽聽
[403]
in taxes and here's the math on that now you can聽
move on to step number three which is to calculate聽聽
[410]
your self-employment taxes because jimmy earned聽
more than 400 dollars this year and he will have聽聽
[416]
to pay self-employment tax to do this first you聽
need to calculate your self-employment taxable聽聽
[423]
income so you need to take your total income which聽
in this example is a hundred thousand dollars聽聽
[428]
and then you need to multiply your total聽
income to get a small deduction at 92.35 to聽聽
[435]
get your self-employment taxable income so jimmy's聽
self-employed taxable income is 92 350 next you聽聽
[444]
need to multiply this by the self-employment tax聽
rate which is 15.3 percent which gives you 14 129聽聽
[454]
and 55 cents once you get your self-employment聽
tax then you're ready to move on to step number聽聽
[459]
four which is to add it all together and divide聽
by four so you want to take what we calculated聽聽
[465]
in step number two which was the federal tax and聽
add it to what we calculated in step number three聽聽
[471]
which was the self-employment tax so jimmy will聽
add seven thousand five hundred and eighteen聽聽
[476]
dollars plus fourteen thousand one hundred and聽
twenty nine dollars to get a total estimated tax聽聽
[482]
of twenty one thousand six hundred and forty seven聽
dollars he then would abide that by four to get an聽聽
[488]
estimated quarterly tax payment of five thousand聽
four hundred and eleven dollars and seventy five聽聽
[495]
cents now that's all the math okay sean okay i聽
i followed you that was tough but i followed you聽聽
[502]
now what if somehow some way i get the math wrong聽
what happens then so remember this whatever that聽聽
[508]
you overpay in taxes the government will send you聽
a refund for that amount now of course you want聽聽
[514]
to be as precise as possible so you can save your聽
money and spend it or invest it into other things聽聽
[521]
and if you underpay in taxes there's about a 10聽
percent buffer but you could wind up spending聽聽
[528]
a little bit more money in estimated tax payments聽
now paying the irs have gotten super easy over the聽聽
[534]
years and i'm gonna hop on my computer to show you聽
exactly what you need to do all right i'm on my聽聽
[540]
computer now and i just want to walk through how聽
to make a quarterly estimated tax payment so the聽聽
[545]
first thing you want to do is go to your browser聽
and go to irs.gov now in general irs.gov has a lot聽聽
[553]
of useful information about taxes and policies聽
but for your quarterly estimated tax payments聽聽
[559]
you'll go to this sub menu item that says pay聽
and then you have a few different options of聽聽
[564]
how you can pay and i'm just going to select聽
bank account for this example and then here聽聽
[570]
you want to go ahead and click on make a payment聽
and then from here it's pretty straightforward聽聽
[576]
you follow the prompts on the screen um just聽
make sure and the reason for payment you're聽聽
[581]
clicking on estimated tax all right and then you聽
make sure you're selecting the correct tax year聽聽
[589]
and normally most people are just going to have聽
a 1040 so yeah they don't even allow you to check聽聽
[594]
to select anything else simply because that's all聽
you can do when making an estimated tax payment聽聽
[600]
and then from here you want to聽
verify your identity you'll put聽聽
[604]
in your specific information of course i i聽
won't show all of this information on camera so聽聽
[610]
i'm just going to pause the screen here for聽
just a second put in some of my information聽聽
[614]
and show you guys what the next screen looks like聽
now once you complete step number two you'll get聽聽
[619]
to step number three here which is going to聽
ask you for some of your payment information聽聽
[624]
uh the amount that we just calculated will be聽
entered here the date that you want to enter聽聽
[630]
it and then your account information and聽
your email address for the confirmation so聽聽
[636]
um that's it for step number three i'm not going聽
to actually go any further here because i don't聽聽
[641]
want to make a payment to the irs right now but聽
in step number four it's a little bit more of the聽聽
[645]
same you're going to enter and enter in some of聽
your specific information and it's going to give聽聽
[650]
you some next steps after that so that's it guys聽
that's as easy as it is to make a payment after聽聽
[658]
you've calculated your estimated tax payment so in聽
conclusion the estimated tax penalty can be a pain聽聽
[665]
but completely avoidable if you follow the steps聽
in this video and if you need help fouling your聽聽
[671]
