Hi Alex here. What is the business case for sustainability?
[4]
Is there reliable evidence that quantifies the value of a company
[7]
integrating sustainability into its corporate DNA? Turns out the answer is 'yes'
[12]
for this video we'll draw on the work of business sustainability guru Bob Willard
[17]
after working thirty four years with a IBM Bobcompleted first
[21]
a masters and then a doctorate on the business case for sustainability at the
[25]
University of Toronto
[26]
he is the author of several books and is considered a global expert on this topic
[30]
let's see what Bob has to say on the business case for sustainability
[34]
first the language nowadays we hear
[37]
everything from the word sustainability to triple bottom line
[41]
to the three Es equity environment economy
[44]
the 3 P's people planet profit CSR
[48]
corporate social responsibility and so on what's important to realize from a
[53]
business perspective
[54]
is that while all these words are relevant and some will resonate with your
[58]
company culture
[59]
better than others for example words like "profit", "Asset Management"
[63]
et cetera what we are ultimately talking about here
[66]
he's being a steward of the five capitals in a way that helps your
[70]
business be more successful
[71]
these are financial and manufactured capitals
[75]
related to the economy human and social capitals related to equity
[79]
and natural capital related to the environment because
[82]
everything comes from nature at some point for more on this last point
[86]
and the triple bottom line see earlier videos all the different terms you hear about
[91]
all refer to the same thing managing today while preparing for tomorrow
[96]
in ways that sent your business up to be resilient in light of changing
[99]
conditions
[100]
the important thing is to choose your language make sure everyone understands
[104]
and is using the same definition
[106]
and then stick to it second the numbers
[109]
we can't talk about business without using numbers right now that we know what
[114]
we're talking about
[115]
how do we know whether integrating sustainability into our corporate DNA
[119]
will actually help us to steward our five capitals in ways that generate revenue
[124]
and mitigate risk? Based on years of research and hundreds of case studies
[128]
Bob Willard showed that if a typical company were to use best practice sustainability
[132]
approaches
[134]
already being used by real companies a small or medium enterprise
[138]
six employees and about one million dollars of annual revenue
[142]
could improve its profit by at least 51 percent
[145]
and a large manufacturing or distribution company
[149]
several thousand employees and about five hundred million dollars of annual
[153]
revenue
[153]
could improve its profit by at least 81 percent compared with
[157]
if he did nothing there are seven bottom-line benefits that align with
[162]
current evidence
[163]
about the most significant sustainability related contributions to
[166]
profit
[166]
one increased revenue 9 percent
[169]
reduced energy 75 percent reduced waste
[174]
20 percent four reduced materials
[177]
10 percent five increased productivity
[180]
2 percent six reduced turnover 25 percent
[184]
and seven avoid a potential 16 to 36 percent
[188]
erosion of profits due to reduced risks coming from
[192]
additional revenue and fewer expenses the first one is about making more money
[197]
two to six are about fewer expenses
[200]
and seven is a combination of more revenues and fewer expenses
[204]
due to reduced risks altogether it's true!
[208]
just by doing what others are already doing a business can increase
[211]
its profit by 51 to 81 percent within three to five years
[215]
and keep in mind that this is only about best practices
[218]
innovation and creating better products and services can take you even further
[222]
this is well documented and you can go to sustainabilityadvantage.com to
[227]
enter your own numbers for your own company
[229]
it's all free and open source sustainability is just smart business
[233]
that's the bottom line and the numbers we've discussed are just the tip of the
[237]
iceberg when it comes to the business case for sustainability
[240]
I'll come back with many more videos about the business case in the days
