Magical Faberge flower valued at 拢1 million - Antiques Roadshow - BBC One - YouTube

[0]
we call it the regimental duel the
[3]
regiment who was to share urinary later
[6]
to become the Queen's and Worcestershire
[7]
as ours was formed in 1794 to protect
[11]
these shores against a Napoleonic
[13]
invasion
[16]
it was agreed that the regiment should
[18]
serve only within the United Kingdom
[21]
however in 1899 when the Boer War was
[26]
going badly it was decided that some of
[30]
the yoandri as volunteers would be
[32]
mobilized and when they left the shores
[36]
the Countess of Dudley whose husband the
[40]
earl of Dudley was a member of the
[42]
regiment he was second-in-command she
[44]
presented each and every soldier that
[46]
went out with a sprig of pear blossom
[50]
worked in silk that they were to wear in
[53]
their hat as a reminder of the county
[56]
that they had left ie the the pear
[59]
blossom emblem and Worcestershire a
[61]
marvelous when they returned in 1903 she
[65]
presented this sprig of fair blas
[68]
astonishing manufactured by Faberge yes
[71]
it's a lovely piece it certainly is a
[73]
lovely piece this looks for all the
[74]
world like a glass farce and there's a
[76]
stretch in here that it's filled with
[78]
water and this is the meniscus at the
[81]
top of the water and nota fact it isn't
[82]
it's a solid block of what is apparently
[85]
glass but it's certainly not it's stone
[87]
it's rock crystal it's icy cold even on
[90]
this hot day and it's immensely
[93]
difficult to carve it's in much much
[95]
harder than glass and then the magic is
[98]
to make it look as if the sprig is
[100]
supported in this so it's drilled down
[103]
into the rock crystal to receive the
[105]
Stork life and the stalk is made of gold
[107]
and it's almost as if we can see from
[110]
time to time that new buds are going to
[112]
blossom on here that would be quite
[114]
surreal wouldn't it and then the flowers
[116]
are made of enameled silver and tiny
[118]
silver stamens but in the centre there's
[120]
a dewdrop of Dimond glinting in the
[124]
sunshine here and the leaves are made of
[126]
Siberian jade from from the Ural
[129]
Mountains and then we have the original
[131]
fitted box here which is made of poly
[132]
would literally the wood of the holy
[134]
tree from Siberia and then just to get
[136]
the message across you probably asked
[138]
Faberge to put a triumphal Laurel here
[141]
in green gold tied with the red gold bow
[143]
well that invoice was the Battle honor
[145]
that was awarded to themself
[147]
Africa I see that's hard and so you know
[150]
it is recorded there that's why we think
[152]
it was 1904 because that was when they
[155]
received the battle honor South Africa
[157]
well it's absolutely bang-on for date
[158]
for the object because some of the best
[160]
things from Faberge are made in the 20th
[162]
century in the age of motorcar the
[164]
telephone even of electricity and here
[166]
we have something that sort of redolent
[167]
to the distant past because it's a
[169]
shrieking pitch of perfection and luxury
[171]
and it's an utterly breathtaking object
[174]
so give me some impression of what the
[176]
Pearblossom means in this regiment to
[178]
you I think when it was presented by
[181]
lady Dudley she did it to recognize the
[185]
sacrifice of those soldiers that didn't
[188]
come back from the war war and those
[190]
that were injured I think it's a focal
[194]
point almost for the younger soldiers
[197]
soldiers such as me that don't way past
[200]
their sell-by date and I just think it's
[204]
it's this focal point it's the from what
[208]
has happened years ago that we still on
[211]
occasions look back to but it's
[213]
important that we also look forward and
[215]
I just think it provides that link for
[217]
all the different ages of soldiers that
[220]
have soldiered with the regiment and are
[222]
intending in the future to soldier with
[224]
the regiment it still comes out on
[226]
dinner nights when the officers of the
[228]
squadron and the regiment are assembled
[230]
it's perhaps suffered over the years
[234]
from being stuffed under the bed on
[236]
occasion the end of the evening yes or
[238]
miss the odd bread roll yes exactly
[240]
it's making me utterly breathless this
[243]
really because I find Faberge things on
[246]
the Antiques Roadshow but nothing of
[247]
this scale and I can tell you that this
[249]
the size of the object the
[251]
sophistication of the object the
[252]
provenance of the object brings it very
[255]
very close to only two other flour
[257]
studies in the United Kingdom which are
[259]
in the Royal Collection given what are
[261]
the qualifications I've already put on
[263]
this object that is a towering
[264]
masterpiece of the Goldsmith's art by
[266]
the most famous goldsmith of the 20th
[269]
century so I'm going to tell you in my
[272]
opinion that this is worth a million
[275]
pounds
[281]
well I supposed to say no it's not for
[284]
sale it's only sneza well that's the
[287]
rest a custodian I know it's not for
[291]
sale
