TOP 5 Free Design Apps For Creating T-Shirt Designs - YouTube
Channel: Printful Custom Printing
[0]
Hey there it's Wes from Printful.
[1]
In this video we'll look at
some of the most popular
[4]
free Adobe graphic design
software alternatives
[6]
that you can use to create your print files
[8]
or any other promotional
materials for your online store.
[11]
You've probably heard about
Photoshop and Illustrator,
[13]
they鈥檝e been the industry leading image editors
[16]
for about 30 years or so.
[17]
They鈥檙e easy to use, offer a lot of features
and are constantly updated.
[21]
However, in order to enjoy
the limitless capabilities of those programs
[24]
you need to subscribe to their
paid monthly service, Creative Cloud.
[27]
Together with our graphics team we鈥檝e found the best free alternatives to these image editors.
[32]
Each of these programs
can perform basic tasks like image editing,
[35]
and creating simple designs
for your products and social media,
[39]
however in terms of structure and additional features
[42]
some may be more useful to you than others.
[44]
Before we begin, make sure
to subscribe to our YouTube channel
[47]
and most importantly tap on the little bell icon
[49]
to always get notified about our latest videos.
[52]
Let鈥檚 get started.
[53]
First up we have Photopea.
[54]
It鈥檚 a free, browser based program
that is a Photoshop clone.
[58]
It can be downloaded and it runs perfectly
on Windows and Mac platforms.
[62]
This way you don鈥檛 always have to rely
[64]
on the stability of your internet connection and browser.
[67]
Photopea can be used to edit photos
and create designs for various Printful products,
[72]
moreover, its interface and tools
resemble Photoshop and are quite intuitive.
[76]
The keyboard shortcuts for the tools
are the same as well.
[79]
If you鈥檝e had any experience with Photoshop in the past,
[82]
working in Photopea should be fairly simple.
[85]
Its pre-sized templates make it really
easy to create graphics for social media.
[90]
Among the few cons
that our graphics team noticed,
[93]
there is a small delay in the brush tool,
[95]
and its ruler tool only measures in pixels,
[98]
which might need some getting used to
[99]
if you鈥檝e been using different
measurement units in other applications.
[103]
Also, Photopea doesn鈥檛 include
some of the common font families
[106]
like Arial, Verdana, and Georgia.
[108]
The next program that we have on our list is GIMP.
[111]
This is a free and open-source raster graphics editor.
[114]
It runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.
[116]
As a Photoshop alternative this program
can complete the same tasks
[120]
and if you鈥檙e tech savvy you can benefit
from the ability to change its source code.
[124]
It鈥檚 possible to take GIMP鈥檚
functionality one step further
[127]
by installing the plugins
created by its vast community
[130]
or creating them yourself.
[132]
Don't install a plugin unless
it comes from a trusted source.
[135]
At first glance GIMP鈥檚 user interface
can seem a bit intimidating
[139]
with the tools, shortcuts and workflow
[141]
being completely different
from the standard set by Adobe.
[144]
For example, if you need to remove
the background from your design
[147]
you need to highlight it with the FUZZY SELECT TOOL,
[149]
then add an Alpha Channel
[151]
and only then you`ll be able to remove it.
[153]
Also, the Fuzzy Select Tool needs some extra tinkering.
[156]
If you leave the default settings,
[158]
this may result in a white outline around your image
[160]
after the background has been removed.
[162]
If you prefer drawing your designs,
[164]
note that the brush tool
might not work smoothly sometimes.
[167]
Next up we have Krita.
[169]
It's a free open-source image editing software
[171]
with its user demographic consisting
mainly of digital painters and illustrators.
[175]
It鈥檚 available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
[178]
Krita is a good raster graphics program
that's packed with tons of features.
[182]
You can create your own custom designs,
[184]
draw artwork with its highly
customizable brush tool, edit photos and more.
[186]
It stands out from our list as the only
free raster graphics program
[190]
suited for creating seamless all-over print patterns,
[193]
thanks to the Wrap Around Mode.
[195]
This is how it works.
[196]
Your main layer is duplicated, merged together
[198]
and reflects all the changes made to the master layer.
[202]
This is really convenient if you`re
creating pattern illustrations
[205]
relevant to the latest design trends.
[207]
Krita is full of options so it could be
a bit confusing and difficult to start with,
[211]
but when you find the tools that you need,
you'll be able to create a great design.
[215]
If you鈥檙e looking for a program
designed specifically for vector editing,
[218]
then Inkscape is for you.
[220]
Vector graphics are especially useful
[222]
when you鈥檙e creating designs meant
for printing on several different types of products.
[225]
Since it鈥檚 a vector graphic, the print file won鈥檛 lose quality
[228]
when it gets exported in different sizes,
[230]
and Inkscape allows you to set a custom DPI for it.
[234]
DPI stands for dots per inch,
[236]
it's the number of dots in a printed inch.
[238]
The more dots the higher the quality of the print,
[240]
meaning it鈥檒l have more sharpness and detail.
[243]
With Inkscape, you can create
complex text graphic designs
[246]
by choosing any font styles available on your computer
[250]
and adding various effects
and adjustments to the lettering.
[253]
The Measurement tool can be
especially useful in such case,
[255]
as it gives you precise value of the distance
between the elements of your design.
[260]
But, similar to the programs listed,
it has a learning curve
[263]
and takes some time to get used to,
[264]
especially if you鈥檙e transitioning from another software.
[268]
Canva might not be the most obvious choice
for Photoshop alternatives,
[271]
yet it鈥檚 a useful platform for any designer.
[274]
It's available both on iOS and Android
[276]
and can be used in an online browser as well.
[278]
Their free toolkit is quite extensive,
[280]
however, you`re able to get the most out of this app
[282]
only by subscribing to Canva鈥檚 paid plans.
[285]
Such a simple feature as downloading a design
[287]
with a transparent background
[288]
is not available in the free version.
[290]
This application is perfect for creating
designs for poster and canvas printing,
[294]
as well as designing promotional
material for your online store
[297]
and takes zero effort in understanding how it works.
[300]
Before creating your designs in Canva
[301]
make sure you understand
the limitations of their free stock,
[304]
to ensure that the design you鈥檝e created
[306]
can be used for printing and commercial purposes.
[308]
Before you download
any of the programs that we mentioned,

when creating a design for a product.
[327]
You want to make sure you are creating a file
that will get you the best quality print.

desktop or mobile?
