Why Do Backorders Exist? - YouTube
Channel: Custom Offsets
[0]
- Listen, I don't need to tell you guys
[1]
about how less than stellar 2020 was,
[3]
and while we won't get into details here,
[6]
I think it's more than fair to say
[7]
that 2020 was definitely
one for the history books.
[11]
It was something.
[12]
We definitely did some things.
[14]
And while we may not be looking
at the same implications
[17]
that we were in 2020,
[19]
there is still one thing
that's carried over into 2021,
[22]
and that's the stress the last 18 months
[24]
have put on our supply chain.
[26]
We're not just talking
wheels and tires here.
[27]
We're talking chicken
wings to computer chips,
[30]
coffee, and even wheels,
tires, and lift kits.
[32]
Inventory has been a bit of a struggle
[34]
and it definitely looks like
[36]
it's going to continue at
least for a little while.
[38]
But what exactly is a backorder?
[41]
What does national backorder mean?
[43]
How does that affect you
guys as the guy or gal
[45]
who needs their wheels, tire,
suspension, or other parts,
[49]
including performance parts,
'cause we have those too.
[50]
Good news is I'm Dustin
with Custom Offsets.
[52]
You guys can follow me
on Instagram at @dusti.co
[55]
and today we're gonna
be breaking down exactly
[58]
what a backorder is, how it works,
[60]
and of course what it
means for you at the end.
[63]
At the end of the video,
[63]
we'll give you guys a few quick tips
[65]
if you're looking for wheels and tires,
[67]
but may be experiencing
a backorder at this time.
[70]
All right, let's get it.
[72]
(dramatic music)
[82]
If you're watching this video
[83]
and you're wondering why
it may seem familiar,
[86]
well that's 'cause it is.
[88]
See, way back in 2015 Sean
actually made the same video,
[91]
and back then it taught me a lot about
[93]
how the world of wheels work
in terms of supply chain.
[97]
And now while Sean's video
is essentially still true
[100]
from a fundamental standpoint,
[101]
we wanted to bring you guys an
updated version of this video
[104]
because quite frankly,
[105]
the world has changed quite
a bit in the last few years,
[108]
especially in the last 18 months.
[110]
Like anything, time always marches on.
[113]
Nothing stays the same,
[114]
and the only constants in this
world are death and taxes.
[117]
So first and foremost, what
exactly is a backorder?
[121]
What does it even mean?
[122]
According to dictionary.com,
[123]
a backorder can be both a noun and a verb,
[126]
and for the purpose of today's video,
[128]
we're gonna focus on the
action of placing a backorder,
[131]
otherwise known as the verb.
[133]
Dictionary defines the verb backorder as
[136]
placing an order for a product
[137]
that is temporarily out of stock.
[140]
Now, that by itself sounds really official
[143]
and fancy and technical,
[145]
but at the end of the day,
[146]
a backorder just means
that there are no more
[148]
of that specific product in the inventory
[150]
of the United States,
[151]
hence being called a national backorder.
[154]
Let me break it down for you real quick.
[156]
I've been buying wheels
for quite a while now.
[158]
While maybe not as long as some of you,
[159]
I bought my first set of custom wheels
[161]
when I was just 16 years old.
[164]
Just a cute little guy,
really long hair, and dimples.
[167]
It was great.
[168]
I had no beard, it was weird.
[169]
No photos, we're not doing that.
[171]
My first set of wheels with a set of
[172]
American Racing Outlaw Ii
reps that I slapped some
[175]
nasty 31X10.5R15 Firestone
mud terrain 23 degree tires
[182]
that I thought was the coolest thing ever.
[185]
Back then, believe it or not
a 31, that was a big tire,
[189]
'cause trucks came with like 245/65s.
[192]
See, growing up around this industry
[193]
I never really understood
exactly what a backorder was
[196]
or really how the wheel
world worked in general
[199]
until I started here at Custom Offsets.
[201]
So, because I didn't know it back then,
[204]
we're now gonna teach it to you guys.
[205]
Here's how it works.
[206]
(cartoon laughs maniacally)
[208]
- Finally.
[209]
- Custom Offsets has
roughly 90,000 different
[211]
stock keeping units, or SKUs
for short, on the website.
[215]
To stock just one set of four
of that many different wheels
[218]
and tires would be something like
[220]
four and a half or $5
billion worth of inventory.
[224]
Now, listen, we love you guys.
[226]
Truly, we really do,
[227]
but that is way out of our leagues,
[230]
like, way out of our leagues.
[232]
For reference that's
enough money to buy roughly
[233]
2,500 50 foot yachts,
[237]
or enough to buy five of
the new Levi's Stadium.
[241]
Better yet, if you're feeling
like you wanna give back
[243]
and be a little generous,
[244]
you could buy a cup of coffee
for every college student
[246]
in America every day for their entire
[249]
college school year this
year with that kind of money.
[252]
That's a lot of coffee.
[253]
Good news is you couldn't
get that much coffee anyway,
[255]
because there's a coffee bean shortage.
[256]
It's great.
[257]
For that reason when
you guys place an order,
[259]
one of two things happens.
[260]
Now, of course, we do stock
a ton, and I mean a ton,
[264]
of popular wheels and tires,
[265]
somewhere in the neighborhood
of 10,000 total wheels
[268]
and tires at any given time.
[269]
This is where we can roll
the footage of all the tires
[272]
at the warehouse, where
there's more Venom Powers
[274]
than you could ever want in your life,
[276]
Versatyres, Fuels, Moto
Metal, it's all there.
[278]
We got it.
[279]
But we can't stock them all
[281]
meaning that if you order
a wheel and tire package
[283]
that we don't have,
[284]
these are oftentimes shipped to us
[285]
from the manufacturer's warehouse.
[287]
See, now many of these
manufacturer's warehouses
[289]
are either on the East Coast,
[291]
so Maine and Pennsylvania
and all that stuff,
[293]
or the West Coast,
[294]
most notably California here.
[296]
That's where most of the
big receiving ports are.
[299]
As long as the wheel or tire that you want
[300]
is in inventory in those
warehouses, life is pretty simple.
[304]
They ship the products to us.
[305]
We mount them and balance them,
[306]
and then we put them on a pallet
[307]
and ship it to you for free, of course,
[308]
'cause that's what we do
here at Custom Offsets,
[310]
and then you're right as rain.
[311]
In 10 to 15 days you've got
your wheels at your door.
[314]
You're putting them on your truck.
[315]
You and your buddies are mobbing down
[316]
to the local Walmart meeting.
[317]
Everybody's happy.
[319]
Here's where it gets complicated.
[321]
Quite simply, a national back
order on a specific wheel
[323]
or tire means that there are no more
[325]
of that particular product
[327]
available for purchase
in the United States.
[330]
So, why is it that sometimes
there are products listed
[333]
as backorder on our website,
[334]
but someone else may have
them available for purchase?
[337]
Well, I can't speak for
every certain circumstance.
[339]
This usually just means that whoever has
[341]
those wheels or tires for sale
[342]
has them sitting in a warehouse
much like we do, right?
[345]
So, while this can be great
for getting the wheels,
[347]
tires, or lift kit that you
may want in a timely fashion,
[350]
not all retailers,
[351]
but some retailers will actually
charge more as they know
[354]
that they have the only
set available at that time.
[357]
One prime example of
this is auto dealerships
[359]
who are notorious for doing this,
[360]
often calling it their
regional market adjustment,
[364]
which is really just some crap about how
[366]
they have one car that you
want and no one else has it.
[368]
It happens.
[369]
We don't do that here.
[370]
So, what were to happen if say you would
[372]
order a set of wheels
that are on backorder.
[374]
So, when you guys order wheels from us,
[375]
we immediately open an
order for your wheels
[377]
from the manufacturer,
[379]
at which time they're
gonna give us an estimate
[381]
to when we can expect
the wheels to arrive here
[383]
in the good ol' US of A.
[385]
Typically these backorders
are somewhere between
[387]
four and six weeks,
[388]
but can be more or less depending on
[390]
where the wheels actually
are in the supply chain.
[393]
Important note here, we're
using the term wheels a lot,
[396]
but really this goes for anything.
[398]
It's wheels, it's tires, it's lift kits,
[399]
it's performance parts, it's lighting.
[401]
It's everything that we carry
[402]
generally speaking follows
the same principles.
[404]
See, most wheels and
tires actually come from
[407]
across the big pond and are
made in countries like China,
[409]
Taiwan, Serbia, Indonesia,
and of course others.
[413]
Once the wheels are actually
made in their parent country,
[417]
they're loaded into boxes
[418]
and then loaded into big containers,
[419]
and then they load these containers
[421]
onto these massive cargo ships,
[422]
much like the one that
we saw get stuck sideways
[425]
in the Suez Canal this year.
[426]
By the way, RIP to that boat captain.
[429]
He's not dead,
[430]
but he probably doesn't work in
[431]
the nautical line of work anymore.
[433]
I'm just gonna say that
[434]
when you make a mistake of
that scale, it gets rough.
[439]
Once manufacturers have loaded the wheels
[441]
in their containers onto the ship,
[443]
the ship sets sail.
[445]
Here's the thing, the ocean is big,
[449]
like really big.
[450]
Like really, really, really big.
[451]
And while container ships
are also pretty big,
[454]
they're still subject to the mercy of
[456]
the great big blue ocean,
[459]
which means that if the
weather is not good,
[461]
the ships don't sail.
[462]
This can mean that
ships can sometimes take
[464]
upwards of three to four additional weeks
[466]
to sail from the country of
origin to the United States.
[470]
Now, once they arrive here
in the good ol' US of A,
[472]
it takes another week or so
[473]
for that container full
wheels to get unloaded.
[476]
And from there it gets shipped
[477]
from the port to us, Custom Offsets.
[481]
Sounds simple, right?
[482]
It is, but there's more curve balls
[483]
that come into play here.
[484]
Sometimes these containers
will only contain
[487]
a few of the wheels that you want.
[489]
While you may be waiting for them,
[490]
someone else may have reserved
those wheels before you did
[493]
simply by ordering them before you did.
[496]
Like, they were first.
[498]
It's just how it works.
[499]
In events like this it can mean that
[501]
you need to wait longer until
the next container arrives
[503]
with the wheels or tires
that you're looking for.
[506]
Not ideal, right?
[506]
I get it.
[507]
Additionally it's not
uncommon for these containers
[509]
to face additional
struggles along the way,
[511]
especially here in 2021.
[513]
From time to time,
[514]
it's possible to see containers
[516]
get stuck at places like the port,
[517]
sometimes upwards of two weeks or longer
[520]
while port workers work
through the backlog
[522]
of all the container
ships they have to unload.
[525]
There's a lot of stuff going
on in shipping right now.
[526]
We made another video on this.
[528]
We can link it down below.
[529]
If you're interested in that
you guys can check it out.
[531]
But for this reason,
[532]
when we say four to six week back order,
[534]
it's the best educated guess of a timeline
[537]
that the manufacturer can provide us
[538]
at the time of your order being placed.
[541]
Trust us.
[542]
We hate waiting for your
wheels just as badly as you do,
[544]
so we get it.
[546]
We feel you.
[546]
It's not fun, but it's the
state of the world right now.
[550]
So, let's say you're mid-build
[551]
and you need wheels ASAP Rocky, right?
[554]
What if you already took your stocks off
[556]
and you sold them to your buddy,
[557]
or a buddy's friend, or a
friend of a friend of a buddy,
[560]
or heck maybe even some
rando off a Craigslist
[562]
who had crazy hair and bad breath.
[563]
Listen, I'm not gonna judge.
[566]
Either way your truck is
now sitting on jack stands
[568]
and you need wheels
now, like yesterday now.
[571]
Good news on this one is
that we actually have a way
[574]
that you guys can look at
what wheels that we have
[577]
in stock in the warehouse
right now, ready to ship.
[580]
Same goes for tires, right?
[581]
All you gotta do is
head over to the website
[583]
and be sure to sort by quick delivery.
[585]
This is actually gonna allow
you to view all the wheels
[587]
and tires that we have in
the warehouse right now,
[589]
meaning that you can pick
up a wheel and tire package
[591]
and have it to your door in
10 days with quick delivery.
[595]
It's pretty awesome,
[596]
and it's not just all the no-name wheels.
[598]
We have big movers.
[599]
Fuel, Moto Metal, XD, Venom
Power tires, Versatyres.
[602]
There's a lot of good stuff in there.
[604]
This will at least get you rolling
[606]
and on your way to the local truck show
[608]
with all your buddies.
[609]
Because as everyone knows,
[610]
there's still some shows left this year.
[612]
And then once your dream wheels and tires
[614]
do come back into stock,
[615]
you can always sell the
ones that you bought
[617]
to your buddy for like 75%
of what you paid for them,
[619]
and then buy your other set.
[621]
It's like hashtag science.
[622]
It's pretty cool.
[623]
What do you guys think about
all the backorder madness?
[626]
Has it affected you,
[627]
or have you been able to get the products
[628]
that you're looking for
in a timely fashion?
[630]
Let us know down in the comments below,
[632]
and as always, please consider
subscribing to the channel
[634]
if you haven't already,
[635]
so we can keep bringing you guys
[636]
the industry insight and truck trends
[639]
that you've come to love from us.
[640]
With that I'm Dustin with Custom Offsets,
[642]
and I'm gonna go eat some lunch.
[643]
Peace.
[646]
(upbeat music)
[655]
Swear to God,
[655]
if you put a picture of
me at 16 in this video,
[657]
I'm gonna kill you.
