Switching Cost: The Myth of Multitasking - YouTube

In this video I’m gonna tell you why you should stop multitasking right now, especially
[4]
if you want to increase your productivity, and want to get more things done.
[9]
Multitasking is the biggest hindrance to your productivity.
[12]
Let me debunk its myth.
[15]
In fact it is this very realisation that will help you become super productive in study,
[20]
at work, and everything else.
[23]
All successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and managers know this very well.
[27]
They know how bad
just how bad multitasking can really be.
[32]
But they also know what they have to do to get more work done.
[35]
And it is this very simple method that we are going to discuss today, so make sure you
[39]
watch this video till the end.
[41]
Hello and welcome to Coffee&Junk!
[42]
I’m your host Abhishek.
[44]
I make videos every week where I talk about Practical Life Skills (PLS) that help you
[49]
get smarter, achieve more, and win big in life.
[51]
And these are some of the ideas that you do not want to miss, especially if you are ambitious,
[56]
and want to be super successful in life.
[58]
So better hit that SUBSCRIBE button right now!
[61]
You would be surprised to know that the word priority didn't always mean what it does today.
[68]
It came into the English language in the 1400s, but it was always singular.
[73]
There was only “priority”.
[75]
No “priorities”.
[77]
It meant the very first or prior thing.
[80]
And it remained singular for the next five hundred years.
[83]
Only in the 1900s did we pluralise the term, and started talking about “priorities”.
[90]
We thought that by changing the word itself we could bend reality.
[95]
We thought that somehow now we’ll be able to have multiple “first” things.
[99]
How funny is that!
[100]
Yes, we are capable of doing two things at the same time.
[104]
We can, for example, to watch TV while cooking, or maybe, answer an email while talking on
[110]
the phone.
[111]
However, you cannot concentrate on both the tasks at once.
[115]
When you are doing more than one thing at a time, you aren’t really doing them simultaneously.
[121]
Multitasking is actually forcing your brain to switch back and forth very quickly from
[126]
one task to another.
[128]
Now, this wouldn't be a big deal if the human brain could transition seamlessly from one
[134]
job to the next, but unfortunately it cannot.
[139]
Multitasking forces you to pay a mental price each time you switch from one task to the
[144]
next.
[146]
In psychology terms, this mental price is called the “Switching Cost”.
[150]
Switching cost is the disruption that we experience when we switch our attention from one task
[155]
to the next.
[156]
A study found that it takes about 64 seconds to resume you task after glancing at a notification
[162]
on your phone.
[164]
64 seconds for looking at your phone for, I dunno, a microsecond.
[169]
Which means that you are wasting one out of every six minutes.
[173]
And 4 hours a week.
[175]
Now I do not know about you, but I’m not somebody who is ready to waste even a minute
[181]
a week just because of a notification, which might not even be that important.
[187]
The myth of multitasking is that it will make you more productive.
[191]
Which essentially means that if you are writing an article or reading something, as well as
[196]
looking at your phone, and chatting with a friend, also going to YouTube, you are being
[201]
productive.
[202]
It’s a myth.
[203]
It doesn’t work like that.
[205]
In reality, remarkable focus is what makes the difference.
[209]
And multitasking is the dead opposite.
[212]
Doing more things does not drive faster or better results.
[216]
Doing things better drives better results.
[219]
Even more accurately, doing one thing, not multiple things, for a long stretch of time,
[224]
with remarkable focus, and doing it as best you can is what drives better results.
[230]
It’s all about focus!
[232]
Focus is your key to your productivity.
[234]
Focus in career, in life goals, yes, but focus in your day-to-day actives as well.
[241]
And if agree with me so far, comment “Yay!” right now.
[244]
So, now that you are convinced that multitasking is bad for you, I’m gonna tell you what
[251]
you should do instead.
[253]
One of the improvements that you can make is to assign one, and only one, priority for
[259]
each day.
[260]
You should obviously plan to complete other important tasks during the day, but your priority
[266]
task is the one non-negotiable thing that must get done.
[270]
And, this is a method that is practiced by all successful entrepreneurs and artists.
[278]
That one presentation, that one meeting, or that one creative piece of art should be your
[285]
prime focus.
[286]
The power of choosing one priority is that it naturally guides your behaviour by forcing
[292]
you to organise your life around this responsibility.
[296]
Your priority becomes an anchor task, the mainstay that holds the rest of your day in
[302]
place.
[303]
Now, your prior task can be anything, starting from going for a run in the morning, to delivering
[309]
a report to the client, or in fact writing that piece of code.
[314]
For me personally, it’s something like this.
[316]
I write articles for CoffeeAndJunk.com every Monday and Tuesday, I record videos for my
[323]
YouTube channel every Wednesday, and I record audio episodes for CoffeeAndJunk.com’s Patreon
[330]
page every Thursday.
[332]
Fridays and Saturdays are all about getting office work done.
[336]
Yes that is a priority since I still have a day job.
[339]
And Sundays are all about spending time with friends and family.
[343]
Yes, that’s a pretty important task as well.
[346]
If things get crazy, and yes they often do, there is no debate about what should get done,
[351]
and what should be skipped.
[353]
Since I have already decided what is urgent and what is important.
[357]
And I suggest you do the same.
[361]
Spend a good time while deciding your priorities.
[364]
It’s not something that gets decided in a minute.
[367]
And once you’ve set them, do not change them.
[370]
Try this method, put this into action, do it for a month, and I guarantee you results.
[375]
However, having said that, doing something like this is not at all easy.
[378]
You’ll face unique challenges.
[380]
And when you do, just come back and share them with me in the comments below.
[386]
As a society, I think we've fallen into the trap of busyness and overwork.
[391]
In many ways, I think we have mistaken all this activity to be something meaningful.
[397]
The underlying thought seems to be, “Look how busy I am!
[401]
Since I’m so busy, I must be doing something important.”
[405]
And, by extension, “I must be important since I'm so busy all the time.”
[411]
While I firmly believe that everyone has worth and value, I think we're kidding ourselves
[416]
if we believe being busy is what brings meaning in our lives.
[421]
In my experience, meaning is derived by bringing value to our corner of the universe.
[427]
And the more I study people who are able to do that, people who are masters of their craft,
[432]
the more I see that they have one thing in common.
[436]
Relentless focus!
[438]
The people who do the most valuable work have a remarkable willingness to say no to distractions,
[445]
and focus on their one thing.
[447]
There’s a famous saying by Steve Jobs: People think focus means saying yes to the
[454]
thing you've got to focus on.
[455]
But that's not what it means at all.
[458]
It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are.
[463]
You have to pick carefully.
[465]
I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things we have done.
[470]
Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.
[474]
I think we need to say no to being busy and say yes to being committed to our craft.
[480]
Always remember, if you commit to nothing you’ll be distracted by everything.
[486]
That’s all from me for today!
[488]
Now it’s your turn.
[490]
What is that one thing that you wish to master?
[492]
What is the one priority that anchors your life or work every day?
[497]
Do you face difficulties in multitasking, or you still believe that multitasking is
[501]
actually helpful?
[502]
Either way, let me know by leaving a comment below right now.

Also, share this video with a friend, you know the one who does 10 things at a time,
[513]
and accomplishes nothing.
[515]
Tell them what I just told you about.
[517]
Tell them about the Switching Cost.
[518]
Better do it right now, before it’s too late!
