How I became legally German without speaking German - YouTube

Channel: Spaghetti Road

[0]
so this is the story of how i became a
[2]
german citizen
[3]
without ever having lived in germany or
[5]
be able to speak the language

[11]
a lot have asked me where i'm from and i
[14]
feel like i finally need to come clean
[15]
about this
[16]
after the flag videos a lot of people
[18]
have sent me their flags and proudly let
[20]
me know about their countries
[22]
it's awesome how nice people all over
[24]
the world are but some germans also
[26]
happily began sending me local flags
[28]
with descriptions of the country
[29]
thinking they were teaching a foreigner
[30]
about them
[32]
for example last kindly sent the flag of
[33]
the german city of cookshaven
[35]
reiner just wanted to share some german
[37]
culture with these german-colored socks
[39]
and it makes me feel like a liar a
[42]
complete phony
[43]
because actually i'm just one of you
[47]
i'm legally german one morning when
[50]
eating my gummy bears with sauerkraut
[52]
and vice beer i decided i finally need
[54]
to explain why
[55]
so let's go a bit back i grew up as a
[57]
danish boy
[58]
in denmark speaking danish i never lived
[62]
in germany but i did of course visit a
[64]
couple of times
[65]
for example when going camping in france
[67]
with my family we drove through germany
[69]
or when going skiing in austria germany
[71]
was quite convenient to drive through
[74]
or when i visited the czech republic i
[76]
drove through germany
[77]
apart from danish i was taught english
[79]
in school which was cool because i
[81]
became able to understand what they were
[83]
saying in movies songs and video games
[86]
later when i was 13 to 15 years old
[88]
german was also introduced in school
[90]
it seemed less useful compared to
[92]
english and i
[93]
hated it instead of just one word for
[96]
there german had for no reason made
[98]
three different words for it
[99]
the id does just to be sure you were
[101]
wrong 67
[102]
of the time if that wasn't bad enough
[105]
just to be sure you were wrong virtually
[107]
all the time
[107]
these words were again split into a
[109]
million other words just to make it even
[111]
harder
[112]
and if my old german teacher is watching
[114]
this really no offense to her
[116]
she actually cared a lot and really
[117]
tried making me learn but
[119]
at this point i already felt so deeply
[120]
violated and being forced to learn this
[122]
crazy mess of a language that i didn't
[124]
pay any attention at all
[126]
as soon as it became possible i switched
[128]
to spanish instead of course
[129]
and thought this would be my last
[131]
encounter with german
[132]
in june 2014 i visited a campsite in
[135]
croatia with my family
[137]
there were a lot of germans there and
[138]
they seemed to share community
[141]
this was during the world cup and as
[142]
germany kept winning matches the german
[144]
team kept getting more and more
[145]
attention
[146]
the games were shown at most restaurants
[148]
and were loudly cheered on
[149]
specifically there were always two drunk
[151]
german guys my age who were obnoxious
[153]
and loud
[155]
i must admit i hope brazil would beat
[157]
germany in the semi-finals
[158]
since i didn't like these two particular
[160]
guys i had no real connection to brazil
[162]
i was simply just a hater because of two
[165]
random guys
[166]
anyway as many probably know i better
[168]
the wrong horse brazil didn't win
[171]
germany did 7 1 so decisively that a few
[174]
certain websites
[175]
actually had to request people to stop
[177]
uploading match under public humiliation
[179]
that night there was an incredible
[181]
atmosphere where all the germans were
[182]
and i could only look with envious eyes
[184]
at them
[186]
a couple of years later when planning to
[187]
china road trip we were applying for
[189]
visas
[190]
i noticed kazakhstan and mongolia
[192]
required me as a danish citizen to
[194]
obtain visas in advance
[195]
whereas the germans could just come and
[196]
go as they wanted
[198]
i was truly jealous of these pesky
[200]
germans with all their travel freedom
[202]
and victories in football
[204]
but if you can't beat them join them how
[206]
hard would it be to become german
[208]
i had some family from there which might
[210]
help my case but would i have to move to
[212]
germany
[213]
would i have to pass some sort of test
[215]
were there any chances at all
[217]
well the road trip was in a few days at
[219]
this point not enough time to become
[221]
german so i sort of just
[223]
forgot and a year passed but then i
[226]
remembered the idea
[228]
before proceeding i had to know if
[229]
germany had any mandatory military
[231]
service
[232]
a lot of countries still have it and
[234]
this project would be beyond stupid if i
[236]
were to end up enrolled in the military
[238]
and have to go fight somewhere for
[239]
germany
[240]
as it doesn't always end well luckily
[242]
germany already abolished conscription
[245]
next step was figuring out how to
[246]
actually become legally german
[248]
turns out there's quite a lot of things
[249]
needed living there for eight years
[252]
where my longest year once in germany
[254]
have been 3 weeks
[255]
so if the government was willing to
[256]
accept that i just need
[259]
7 years 11 months and a week extra
[262]
commitment to the free and democratic
[264]
constitutional system
[265]
i guess i'm cool with that possesses an
[268]
adequate knowledge of the german
[269]
language
[270]
i don't know if my years of not paying
[272]
attention in german class would help me
[273]
here
[274]
have legal capacity or legal
[276]
representative
[277]
i don't even know what that means so i'm
[279]
probably good there
[281]
and even an examination altogether it
[284]
seemed impossible
[285]
the other options also didn't seem
[286]
applicable to me i wasn't born there
[289]
and i couldn't really claim to be a
[290]
victim of nazi persecution
[292]
but how about by descent turns out if
[295]
there's just a straight line of
[296]
germanness
[296]
and nobody in the family has renounced
[298]
it you might be german as well
[300]
there are of course some exceptions such
[302]
as before 1975
[304]
apparently you could only inherit
[306]
citizenship from your father
[307]
but after that year german mothers were
[309]
also considered as german as german
[311]
fathers
[312]
i went to the german embassy just to be
[314]
sure and to figure it all out
[316]
i told them about my family and the
[318]
helpful bureaucrats set my case was very
[320]
easy
[321]
there was no need for a lengthy process
[323]
i would just need to write a few
[324]
documents
[325]
and then i could apply for german
[326]
passport straight away from the german
[328]
government's perspective
[330]
i had always been german since birth i
[332]
had just gone under the radar and never
[333]
been registered
[335]
well walking from the embassy was a
[337]
pretty weird feeling
[338]
there was no sneakiness or anything
[340]
seemingly i was just german all of a
[342]
sudden
[343]
though i didn't have a passport yet i
[344]
decided to take my germanness very
[346]
seriously
[347]
i went to the supermarket and bought all
[349]
the sauerkraut and
[350]
though i'm really not into the musical
[351]
style of ramstein i forced myself to
[353]
listen to 15 minutes every day
[355]
since it seemed pretty german i still
[357]
didn't speak german but that would
[359]
probably come along with the passport
[361]
i booked an appointment at the embassy
[362]
so-called burger service
[364]
and i must admit i was quite
[366]
disappointed it was not what the name
[368]
suggested
[369]
anyway i applied for my passport and
[370]
waited a few weeks where i only watched
[372]
movies dubbed in german
[374]
before i went back to the embassy to get
[375]
my passport my first joke at the embassy
[378]
as soon as i got in my hand was if i was
[379]
now entitled to any money or payments
[381]
from the german government
[383]
it was unfortunately not appreciated on
[385]
my way home
[386]
now as an official german i had so many
[388]
questions who was the german version of
[390]
shakira
[391]
should i like swiss people i quickly
[394]
began feeling very german
[396]
i had a sudden and unexplained urge to
[398]
be very punctual and less funny
[400]
and a strong desire to open europe's
[402]
borders and have a more integrated
[404]
european union
[405]
before i had never really liked
[407]
sauerkraut i actually found it a bit
[409]
off-putting but now i had a hunger
[411]
specifically for it
[412]
i invited a couple of friends got a few
[415]
flags and balloons and held a german
[416]
dinner party on my first night as the
[418]
documented german
[419]
the menu was venus needs with sauerkraut
[422]
though the name suggests it might have
[423]
been more austrian actually
[425]
i noticed that i still wasn't able to
[427]
speak german or like sauerkraut but that
[429]
would probably come any day now
[431]
i must say it was a nice feeling to know
[434]
i could move to germany and
[435]
immediately be entitled to voting rights
[437]
and helped to choose the future of the
[438]
country
[439]
a few days later i was actually so lucky
[442]
that i had leo and frankfurt airport for
[443]
a couple of hours
[445]
where i found an appropriate german
[446]
outfit for the occasion of being in
[447]
germany for the first time as an
[449]
official german
[450]
though the shanking area is practical
[452]
without border checks on this day as i
[454]
walked through the airport i wanted to
[455]
show my passport
[457]
so instead i showed it to every person i
[459]
interacted with whether they wanted to
[461]
see it or not
[462]
i humbly exclaimed i was german but it
[464]
was not such an impressive thing in
[465]
germany since
[466]
apparently a lot of people are german
[468]
there not a lot changed after i became
[470]
german
[471]
sure my roommates began finding a lot of
[473]
sauerkraut in weird places all over the
[474]
apartment but
[475]
mostly life was pretty normal i
[478]
appreciated the passport as a symbol of
[480]
being german
[481]
and i would keep it forever though i did
[483]
lose it a couple of months later
[485]
as thing unfortunately goes i was taking
[487]
a bus in honduras when five armed
[489]
robbers entered and stole everything
[491]
to be honest in this situation having
[493]
two passports were incredibly helpful
[495]
since i could travel onward with my
[496]
danish passport i had kept hidden in my
[498]
shoe without being stuck
[500]
just a quick heads up if you now meet
[502]
somebody with my name
[503]
and a german passport in honduras it's
[505]
probably identity theft so don't trust
[507]
them
[508]
when i got back i was once again just
[509]
danish a new passport would cost me 58
[512]
euros and 50 cents
[514]
a significant sum but then again i had
[516]
already had a taste of the joy of being
[518]
german so i decided to get a new one
[520]
a few months later there was an official
[522]
soccer match between denmark and germany
[524]
i took this as the real test of which
[526]
country i should belong to
[528]
i went to see it with my friend mass and
[529]
though we represented opposing countries
[531]
all of a sudden
[532]
we tried to remain friends before the
[534]
game i even practiced the german
[536]
national anthem at home so i'd be able
[538]
to sing it along
[539]
at 18 minutes in denmark actually got
[541]
the first goal
[542]
so i took off the stupid german jersey
[544]
and immediately began rooting for
[545]
denmark instead
[546]
but then germany also got a gold and i
[549]
was back on their side
[550]
in the end it ended 1-1 so i kept both
[552]
countries with me
[554]
i must admit when people ask me what i
[556]
was i would still say danish
[558]
as i felt like a bit of a faker when it
[560]
came to being german at one point i
[562]
traveled to beirut in lebanon
[564]
and while getting a haircut at this
[565]
guy's shop he asked me where i was from
[567]
and i did finally answer i'm german well
[571]
they had fled from syria and his brother
[572]
had fled to germany instead
[574]
and already learned the language so he
[576]
insisted on immediately calling his
[578]
brother on facetime in germany so i
[580]
could speak with him
[581]
as i still couldn't speak german i was
[583]
very nervous about being busted but the
[585]
brother was actually very nice and
[586]
thought it was pretty funny in the end i
[589]
began planning a bigger german party for
[591]
my one year anniversary of getting my
[592]
first passport
[594]
my germanversary i went online to buy
[597]
some decorations for the party
[598]
first a big german flag but then i would
[600]
have to decide whether to get the flag
[602]
with the eagle or not so
[604]
i got both and why not get 40 extra big
[606]
flags just in case
[608]
and a pile of flax and sticks is
[610]
necessary too
[611]
i also found a lot of must-haves such as
[614]
german glasses
[615]
this stuff to paint german flags in your
[616]
face and these things
[618]
and of course also 99 balloons i bought
[621]
some german beer and some more
[623]
sauerkraut so i'd be able to provide at
[624]
least a kilogram per guest
[626]
i decided to get 100 pictures printed of
[628]
the famous german people but i didn't
[630]
really know anyone else than miracle so
[632]
i just got a hundred of her honestly i
[634]
might have spent a bit too much in this
[636]
party but it was all worth it
[638]
i prepared an amazing playlist with the
[640]
best hits of nina
[641]
cuffberg and henty hincessare yeah i
[644]
have since heard he's austrian and he
[645]
has of course been replaced now on my
[647]
playlist by helena fisher
[649]
anyway i ordered the flags when in
[650]
advance but a few days before the party
[652]
they had still not arrived
[654]
i was really worried they wouldn't get
[655]
here in time so i went out and bought
[657]
some discarded sewing fabric and turned
[658]
my grandparents house into a small flag
[660]
factory where i shoot them myself with
[662]
the tina
[663]
a great test of a girlfriend is if she
[665]
is willing to spend all night helping
[666]
you suit german flags
[667]
10 out of 10 for patina in this case the
[670]
flags i ordered didn't arrive but i'm
[672]
still very happy with how the party
[673]
turned out
[674]
and two weeks after the party the flags
[676]
did actually arrive
[678]
when i would travel i'd mostly just use
[680]
my german passport which resulted in a
[681]
couple of people giving me compliments
[683]
of how good my danish was
[685]
instead of correcting anybody and saying
[686]
it was my first language i just took the
[688]
compliments and said thank you
[690]
around christmas time i took a ferry to
[692]
rostock to see a christmas market
[694]
my plan was to show bethina my homeland
[696]
and share my culture with her
[698]
we had some glue wine wood fire and just
[699]
walked around seeing the market for an
[701]
afternoon
[702]
don't worry being german didn't make me
[704]
forget who i was when traveling to hong
[706]
kong with patina there was a special
[707]
queue where i could skip the line from
[708]
creation by just being german
[711]
of course i considered it but i decided
[713]
staying with and keeping my girlfriend
[715]
was much more important than saving 25
[717]
minutes
[718]
when showing my passport some people
[720]
often hit me with some german
[721]
so i always give a polite couldn't talk
[723]
back
[724]
one girl i met in egypt kept asking me
[726]
how to say stuff in german
[727]
and after i count this time said i don't
[729]
know and she didn't believe me
[731]
i gave up and i'm really not proud about
[734]
this but i made up a couple of words
[736]
such as kishnak
[737]
to mean talking so to my fellow germans
[739]
if you meet this egyptian girl please
[741]
pretend the word she's using are real
[744]
i continued the tradition of throwing
[745]
german anniversaries and with all the
[747]
flags that didn't arrive in time for the
[749]
last one i now had a lot
[751]
and i bought some more flags and some
[752]
extra balloons
[754]
i by the way thought uganda's flag fit
[756]
way too well to not include it
[758]
for this party i invited about 60 people
[760]
to my apartment
[761]
it was fun we had a quiz about the
[763]
world's countries with questions such as
[765]
which country won the most winter
[767]
olympic medals who's the largest right
[768]
producer or government with the highest
[770]
budget surplus
[772]
spiller germany was the right answer to
[773]
every single question
[775]
my guests seemed very impressed by my
[776]
efforts i had met a couple of german
[779]
people here in copenhagen who i've
[780]
caused also invited
[782]
they were the only ones who did not want
[783]
to paint their faces with german flags
[785]
and were a bit more reluctant regarding
[787]
my blatant display of nationalism
[790]
turns out the germans have a bit of a
[792]
strained relationship with their flag
[793]
and are not exactly comfortable with
[795]
having it all over the place
[797]
it was an important lesson i realized
[799]
i'd been completely wrong
[801]
being german was not about having the
[802]
most flags it was just about being
[804]
punctual
[805]
and driving fast on the autobahn to be
[807]
clear the next anniversary was
[809]
celebrated without any flags
[811]
this was also during the pandemic by the
[812]
way so i just sat alone and it's our
[814]
card
[816]
another thing i learned from the real
[817]
germans and this sounds like a dumb joke
[819]
but they told me i was not supposed to
[821]
eat the sauerkraut cold
[822]
nobody had ever told me it should be
[824]
heated it made it
[826]
slightly better during this time i
[828]
actually got a bit more comfortable with
[830]
the german language
[831]
i would say sentences such as we feel
[833]
kostas and halbers kilokatoflan
[836]
after all danish is not too far from
[838]
german for example we even share the
[839]
word for dark
[841]
my big achievement was when i was
[842]
finally able to read some of the
[843]
literature
[845]
sure i don't understand the most
[846]
complicated stuff yet such as gerder or
[848]
nietzsche in german but i'm able to read
[850]
some of the other great german poetry
[852]
such as this famous poem here he's
[854]
saying he is uh snobby
[856]
the small crocodile he is um
[860]
from egypt on denial first he was in an
[864]
egg but then he snapped himself free
[867]
and i don't think this part is real
[869]
words
[871]
i also know how good of a german i had
[872]
become when i was able to correctly
[874]
identify 13 out of 16 bundeslander in
[876]
this online quiz
[878]
this summer i decided as a german it was
[880]
important that i had seen the parliament
[882]
of my country the so-called bundestag
[884]
so i traveled back to berlin which was a
[886]
lot of fun
[887]
this guy gave a tour i saw the former
[889]
division between east and west berlin
[891]
and i had my first curry wurst in the
[894]
next world cup france won
[895]
so i briefly looked up french
[897]
nationality law but decided even i have
[899]
my limits
[900]
germany was kicked out early in the
[902]
group stage where i lost to south korea
[904]
and danish citizens were giving the same
[906]
visa freedom so all the initial benefits
[908]
were gone
[908]
but i was still happy about being german
[911]
though this stuff with nationality was
[913]
pretty easy in my case it is of course
[915]
not always like that
[916]
there was a big contrast in having
[918]
people in my life that were born here in
[919]
denmark spoke danish as their first
[921]
language
[921]
were mostly unable to travel and still
[923]
had decades-long struggle of getting a
[925]
danish citizenship
[926]
so all jokes aside i am really grateful
[928]
for it
[930]
i guess the last thing to do now that
[931]
i'm publicly german
[933]
is to go and update my profile picture
[934]
to a german flag
[936]
by the way my instagram is

as a german i'll of course run this
[950]
channel in the future without humor or
[952]
jokes anymore
[953]
you can also grab a shirt at
[954]
spaghettiroad.com our design with the
[956]
german flag is already available
[958]
and i was actually going to wear it
[959]
myself but per suggestion from a german
[961]
friend it would be a much more german
[963]
design without the german flag
[965]
so instead i have added the eu flag
[967]
which i'll be able to wear without
[968]
looking like a crazy nationalist
[970]
