How Much Money Can I Spend in Retirement? - YouTube
Channel: Talk Money with Tom
[0]
i've saved a lot for retirement i'm heading聽
into retirement how do i figure out how聽聽
[3]
much i can spend this is actually one of the聽
biggest questions we get on a constant basis聽聽
[10]
actually is just you know how much money can聽
i spend in retirement uh i think there's a聽聽
[15]
compliment to this is how much money do i need to聽
support this amount of spending you know so but聽聽
[20]
those are flips of the same question to a certain聽
degree so now i'm heading into retirement or i'm聽聽
[26]
just retired or whatever along those lines and聽
i kind of want to figure out what my budget is聽聽
[32]
and what not and there's all these different聽
rules that you can use you know you can take聽聽
[37]
a four percent withdrawal and but if you really聽
dig into the four percent withdrawal there's some聽聽
[43]
there's some caveats to it you know you're聽
looking at you have to be the right age you聽聽
[47]
kind of need a 30-year retirement for that to聽
work uh but let's say you're 85. i mean you聽聽
[54]
take more than four percent most likely right聽
and so that's where the monte carlo simulation聽聽
[60]
comes in and again you know i'll share that uh聽
with everybody here as far as that goes again聽聽
[67]
here we go right somebody wants to know how much聽
they can spend and so we put in all of their聽聽
[73]
expenses that they've got now as much as possible聽
that we can identify we build in you know all of聽聽
[80]
their incomes that are coming in social security聽
pensions rental income those type of things聽聽
[85]
and then we look at you know what their asset聽
base is and how that's constructed and where it聽聽
[89]
is how much is in the banks how much is in stock聽
market how much is in the bond market we get all聽聽
[94]
that in there and then we can run this monte carlo聽
simulation and you guys have seen this before but聽聽
[98]
essentially we push this button and we're able to聽
run a thousand scenarios and in this particular聽聽
[105]
case 960 of them were successful yeah right and so聽
what would we do if we want to figure out the max聽聽
[111]
they can spend so if we want to like you know聽
push the limits we would solve for 85 percent聽聽
[118]
and so we have like kind of a super solid聽
functionality and it essentially takes our聽聽
[123]
inputs and says what can we do spending wise and聽
i'll usually bump up your spending a little bit聽聽
[130]
and then i'll get your 85 but longer the聽
time horizon like longer your retirement is聽聽
[135]
less that bump will be so if you have a really you聽
say you're 85 and you expect only to live to 100聽聽
[141]
that 15 years versus someone that's聽
in their 70s and expects to live 100聽聽
[145]
that bump's gonna be different yeah聽
we literally have a super solve button聽聽
[150]
in this particular program and we can say solve聽
for 85 percent probability of success and we can聽聽
[158]
have it just solve for how much money聽
can be spent per year to make that happen聽聽
[162]
and we can update that and continue聽
to look at that or what have you but聽聽
[166]
some people really like that they just want to聽
know the budget and know that they can feel like聽聽
[171]
okay that works because when they're traveling you聽
know budget for travel right okay i'm gonna pick聽聽
[177]
three trips one's expensive one's medium and聽
one's cheap which one can i really afford聽聽
[183]
because it sure makes that trip a lot more fun聽
when you can go knowing what you can afford聽聽
[190]
that's a huge deal yeah a guilt-free trip what's聽
that guilt-free trip yeah that's right because聽聽
[196]
that's just my personal thing whenever you make a聽
purchase that's above and beyond what you probably聽聽
[201]
can really afford it could be anything uh car i've聽
done that before uh you know trips and those types聽聽
[208]
of things you know you're driving around in this聽
nice car but then you have this whole feeling聽聽
[212]
of well i can't really afford this car or i'm at聽
this great trip but man we probably overdid it and聽聽
[221]
i can solve for this let's say at 85 and say聽
okay i can actually afford this and man that i'm聽聽
[227]
telling you that's that's a big part of the trip聽
i mean the whole object of the trip for me is just聽聽
[231]
mental relaxation so knowing that i'm you know can聽
afford it it really does help and maybe i'd go on聽聽
[238]
a better trip than i might have thought right just聽
because okay i can really do this and and maybe聽聽
[243]
i'd enjoy that so i i think it's a great question聽
it's there's lots of different ways of solving it聽聽
[251]
but i wouldn't do it any other way than monte聽
carlo simulation personally just again we've聽聽
[257]
had so much experience with this over the years聽
and it really seems to work i mean real life it's聽聽
[263]
not just oh we did this plan and we never see聽
these people again we redo these for year after聽聽
[268]
year after year and we're getting to see okay聽
this works you know it has been pretty accurate聽聽
[274]
and whatnot and then we can see what happens in聽
these big downturns and keep pushing these buttons聽聽
[279]
i think it's worth looking at yeah so if you're聽
close to retirement i think it's time to start to聽聽
[284]
like uh go into the details you know dig into the聽
weeds with your retirement and figuring out how聽聽
[289]
you have to spend because you know when you're聽
saving that money you can have like a rough you聽聽
[293]
know napkin math to figure out how much money you聽
need for retirement but when you actually get into聽聽
[299]
it and you want to retire at a point you can't聽
really go back to work and that's when you kind of聽聽
[304]
want to make sure that you're in a good spot yeah聽
i actually can make this argument for almost any聽聽
[309]
age too i mean you know we don't get asked this聽
all the time because people are pretty happy with聽聽
[315]
their standard of living uh and they're let's聽
say they're at 96 percent like we just showed聽聽
[320]
okay good good good um but it would be interesting聽
you know for those people that are wondering what聽聽
[326]
they could spend to solve at 85 percent uh it's聽
very easy you know we can do it uh and it will聽聽
[332]
give them an idea of what they could spend uh聽
because sometimes things come up and i've got聽聽
[336]
clients that could afford more and they don't do聽
it because they don't think they could afford more聽聽
[342]
so and that's okay there's nothing wrong with that聽
but maybe there's something you're missing out on聽聽
[347]
that you might have been able to do you know go聽
back to visit your kids you know a few more times聽聽
[352]
or something than you thought you could聽
whatever it might be right everybody's聽聽
[355]
got different things that are important to聽
them so anyway i think you know solving for聽聽
[360]
maximum income you know spend i think it's useful聽
it would help it helps me that's for sure yep
