The Saunders Show - Episode 4 - Piedmont Advantage Credit Union - YouTube
Channel: Saunders Property Management, LLC
[0]
have you noticed that large building on
[1]
the side of Stratford Road just past
[3]
Haines mall that looks a lot like an
[5]
airport terminal well it's not but it
[8]
has a lot to do with winston-salem's
[9]
aviation or history
[11]
let me explain with more than a decade
[13]
of selling real estate in and around the
[15]
winston-salem area one thing that I've
[17]
learned is we are blessed to be able to
[19]
call this place home this show is
[21]
dedicated to showing off some of the
[22]
incredible places and great people in
[25]
this area this is the Saunders show
[33]
everybody my name is Mark Saunders with
[36]
Saunders Realty and today I'm coming
[37]
from Piemonte
[38]
a vantage credit union which is
[40]
headquartered right here in
[41]
winston-salem now if you saw our last
[43]
episode we were at Smith Reynolds
[45]
Airport Piedmont advantage has a really
[48]
cool history here in winston-salem
[49]
originally being set up to service
[51]
Piedmont Airlines at Smith Reynolds
[53]
Airport since then it's grown to service
[56]
their members across the country there
[58]
are a lot of great people here at
[59]
Piedmont advantage Credit Union and I've
[61]
got to know a lot of them because I
[62]
serve on the board here at the Credit
[64]
Union one reason for that is I notice
[67]
how much detail they put into their
[69]
members and their financial wellness
[71]
through education and products and
[73]
investment services for them so let's go
[75]
through and give you a tour of the
[77]
building here and also speak with their
[78]
CEO Judy Thor
[83]
so I'm here today with pay mind
[85]
advantage CEO and really good friend of
[88]
mine Judy Tharp so thank you for taking
[89]
the time and showing us around this
[91]
place so tell me the story of the
[93]
crediting I love history especially
[95]
companies that started and their roots
[97]
are in winston-salem tell me the history
[99]
of the story of him on a bench well it's
[101]
a very cool story
[102]
our crediting started back in 1949 we
[105]
actually started out at Smith Reynolds
[107]
Airport that was the headquarters for
[110]
Piedmont airlines and that's also where
[112]
our credit game got started and we were
[114]
there up until three and a half years
[116]
ago when we moved into this facility
[117]
here at murk mill in Stratford we've
[119]
come a long way since those days but we
[122]
never forget from whence we came we
[125]
still have volunteers who volunteer for
[127]
the credit union that were actually a
[129]
part of that original starting of this
[131]
credit union now I hear you have a long
[133]
history with credit unions how did you
[135]
first hear about credit unions or get
[137]
involved with credit unions in your
[139]
background well it's a cool story mark I
[142]
grew up in a family business much like
[144]
you did so I kind of was an entrepreneur
[146]
at heart so I got really lucky to be
[149]
honest with you in that I answered gonna
[151]
ad in the newspaper to start a credit
[153]
union for the DuPont company in
[154]
Wilmington I pursued that opportunity
[157]
and got the job and Here I am 38 years
[162]
later I would never dream of doing
[164]
anything differently because I love what
[166]
we do for people so one question I get a
[169]
lot when especially working with buyers
[171]
in real estate and we talked about
[172]
getting approved for a loan or anything
[174]
I mentioned credit unions and I think
[176]
there's a big question aren't credit
[178]
unions like banks and banks like credit
[180]
unions what's your thoughts on that
[181]
you're on our board of directors so you
[183]
know that when we meet every month what
[186]
we talk about is what we can do to
[189]
enhance the lives of your members we
[191]
understand that our members own us and
[195]
we will never forget that because that
[197]
is the crux of how
[199]
is different from the bank yeah we are
[201]
owned by the members we serve things are
[203]
changing so fast in today's world with
[205]
the technology and the economy and
[206]
everything where do you see the credit
[208]
union in say five to ten years the
[209]
reason why we exist will never change we
[212]
are here to enhance lives we are owned
[215]
by the members we serve that will not
[217]
change what will change though is the
[220]
way in which we deliver solutions to
[223]
enhance the lives of our members our
[225]
members have changed the way in which
[227]
they do business that will only continue
[229]
to change even more and as those
[233]
generations evolved the way in which
[235]
they expect us to serve their needs will
[238]
change and so we're always there we're
[240]
kind of leading-edge in that respect and
[242]
we'll continue to be that so you've
[245]
mentioned it a couple of times and I
[246]
want to see it because obviously I like
[248]
real estate so can you give us a tour
[250]
let us check out the building awesome so
[257]
right here in the main lobby
[258]
what's different coming from here well
[260]
our goal is to create a member
[262]
experience in the old days people came
[264]
here to do transactions
[266]
those days are are gone pretty much so
[269]
our people you see here are member
[271]
experience advisors so we have music we
[274]
have free Wi-Fi why because we want
[277]
people to come hang out with us and they
[279]
do as you can see back here we have
[281]
newspapers we have seats and coffee and
[285]
beverages and so it's an experience that
[289]
kind of unique right yeah it's just a
[291]
very welcome filling as you as you come
[293]
in with everything being so open and
[294]
here we are on the main level and you
[295]
can see all the way up to the yeah so
[305]
I'm here with Michael Westbrook so tell
[307]
everybody kind of what your role is here
[309]
at the credit union hey Mark yeah I'm
[311]
Michael Westbrook financial advisor for
[313]
the membership here offering services
[315]
through kuso financial services and we
[317]
really are different here because we do
[320]
try to understand each individual
[323]
members needs this is not a
[325]
one-size-fits-all strategy
[327]
it's important to me and important for
[330]
us here to understand that our members
[333]
do come first we sit down and develop a
[336]
plan for their investing whether it be
[338]
short term a long term and help them
[340]
achieve their goals
[341]
okay Thank You members come first I keep
[344]
hearing that theme over and over again
[345]
you're gonna hear it more and more as
[347]
you go through thank thanks Marv you
[351]
asked me earlier about what are some of
[354]
the differences one of the differences
[356]
in a credit union and a for-profit
[358]
financial institution is that we have
[361]
wonderful volunteers rather than pay
[363]
directors who govern the organization so
[367]
that's a unique differentiation point in
[369]
a credit union and a for-profit
[372]
financial services well I see the value
[374]
you are providing how I mean really
[376]
members come first I had no idea all of
[378]
that until you asked me to serve on the
[381]
board and I got to learn more and more
[383]
this is our village the village yes okay
[387]
the village was actually named by the
[389]
employees primarily this is kind of a
[391]
hub of our operations right here on this
[393]
board so we're the base here in
[395]
winston-salem but through electronic
[398]
means we service a lot of people
[400]
remotely without
[403]
the village I like that less than five
[406]
percent of our business it's done face
[409]
to face Wow five percent so the rest of
[411]
it is is electronic tell us about so far
[418]
what have you observed as the difference
[420]
in maybe a previous life and here
[422]
working for Piedmont as a little credit
[424]
union there is in the past on the bank
[425]
side maybe the focus is on the
[427]
institution and what's best for the
[429]
profitability and this is more about the
[432]
member experience because they are after
[433]
all our owners we work we work for them
[436]
we wouldn't be here without them yeah
[437]
when we make it about their experience
[439]
and we put them in charge and kind of
[441]
lay options out in front of them for
[442]
them to choose so giving them the power
[445]
I think that's what builds loyalty I
[448]
have a lot of clients to think banks and
[449]
credit unions different different
[451]
products and everything
[452]
tell me about mortgage product
[453]
specifically that y'all have to offer
[455]
it's a common thing we hear that you
[457]
know you think credit union you think a
[459]
karlie you think a credit card but we do
[462]
all the other mortgage stuff too
[463]
from origination to underwriting and
[465]
processing is all done here and a
[467]
50-foot circle
[469]
so there isn't bouncing ideas and
[471]
questions to Texas and Florida you know
[474]
that is such a valid point because when
[476]
I'm working with buyers I tell them
[477]
things that can make this go so much
[480]
smoother is when you're you know loan
[482]
processor and everything is down the
[483]
hallway instead of five states over to
[486]
make the just so much easier and
[487]
smoother transition one-stop shop
[489]
awesome
[492]
aren't so dumb about this place what's
[494]
this what's this Department this is our
[497]
culture
[498]
where we take care of the needs of
[501]
members who call in from all over the
[503]
country so we service greater than 50%
[507]
of marijuana
[512]
we love our call center agent so a
[516]
couple things that y'all mentioned
[517]
throughout the tour and everything is
[519]
how important education is for your
[522]
members and providing opportunities for
[523]
them to learn more about financial
[524]
education and everything so we're in one
[527]
of your classrooms here so tell me kind
[529]
of the idea for the classrooms and what
[531]
some of the events that you hold in here
[532]
we hold webinars seminars on everything
[536]
imaginable as it relates to financial
[538]
wellness such as how to buy a car how to
[542]
buy a house how to retire safely and
[545]
plan for that
[546]
so these rooms are utilized a lot how do
[549]
how do your members find out about the
[551]
classes that are being offered if
[553]
somebody's watching this video and they
[554]
want to find out more in the classes
[556]
house the best way for them to find that
[557]
information well you know social media
[559]
website we always publicize we even send
[563]
out emails to the members about the
[566]
upcoming educational events and what's
[569]
also cool is after those events are held
[571]
face-to-face many of them are also
[574]
recorded so that you can just go to our
[575]
website afterwards and pull them down
[577]
and you are starting to do online
[579]
webinars as well we have yeah awesome
[582]
that's really really great
[585]
one thing that I've noticed while we
[587]
were on the tour of the property as well
[589]
as the interviews is just how great the
[590]
people are here Piedmont advantage
[592]
credit union they really do put the
[594]
members first and they are here to help
[596]
any way they possibly can so next time
[599]
you're on Stratford Road and you see the
[600]
airport terminal be sure to stop in and
[603]
look at all the different ways that they
[604]
can help you reach your personal
[606]
financial needs if you're viewing this
