[4]
Hello and welcome to this brief overview
[7]
of the impact and value in having a
[9]
master's in public administration degree
[12]
to a military career. Ohio University, a
[16]
perennial military friendly school, is
[18]
the Gateway to obtain your MPA at the
[21]
Voinovich School of Leadership and
[22]
Public Affairs. Next Slide. and I'm a
[28]
retired Marine colonel with over 30
[30]
years of experience in leading and
[32]
working with different organizations
[34]
here in the United States and overseas. I
[37]
have commanded from the battalion to the
[39]
division level and held several senior
[41]
directorate level positions. At the
[44]
pinnacle of my career I was focused on
[46]
strategic leadership, strategy and
[48]
planning, all key requirements from
[51]
having my master's in public
[52]
administration. My transition from the
[55]
Marines has allowed me to continue to
[57]
serve in my home state of Ohio and alma
[59]
mater Ohio University where I'm
[62]
currently the director of the Voinovich
[63]
Academy for excellence in
[64]
public service offering professional and
[67]
executive education programs for those
[70]
serving in the public sector. Next slide.
[79]
There are many paths you can take upon
[81]
transitioning out of the military but
[84]
I'd like to focus on the path most
[86]
familiar to me and that is getting a
[88]
master's in public administration. As I
[91]
pointed out before I received my MPA
[93]
in pursuit to becoming a more versatile
[95]
officer as I was advancing in my career
[98]
so with the requirements and working
[100]
with local, state and national level
[102]
leaders and organizations.
[104]
I've coupled my military background and
[107]
my postgraduate education to help
[109]
balance my career and experience as a
[112]
leader. Next slide.
[122]
Our MPA program at Ohio University is
[126]
organized and housed in the Voinovich
[127]
School of Leadership and Public
[129]
Affairs. The Voinovich school prides
[132]
itself on finding research-based
[133]
solutions to challenges facing
[136]
communities, the economy, and the
[139]
environment. The school offers both
[141]
academic and community support programs
[144]
and three distinct groupings: energy in
[147]
the environment, entrepreneurship and
[150]
regional development, and policy
[151]
innovation and strategic leadership more
[154]
specifically looking at the slide you'll
[157]
see some of our highlights of the school
[159]
including how we prepare students for
[161]
success, as well as, some of the projects
[164]
were involved in. Next slide. Moving along
[173]
to our MPA program this slide outlines
[176]
some important details you'll want to
[178]
know as a potential student. First the
[181]
program is completely online and can be
[184]
completed within two years and this
[186]
advanced degree covers the fundamentals
[188]
of public administration and service
[191]
equipping students with the skills to
[193]
address difficult social problems, meet
[196]
complex challenges, and enhance public
[199]
value. Next slide. Our curriculum is
[210]
comprised of 36 total credit hours the
[213]
first 27, as shown on the slide,
[216]
is the program's core courses. Just from
[220]
a look at the course names I think
[222]
you'll agree the program offers a robust
[224]
curriculum. Our team develop coursework
[227]
from real challenges in public
[229]
administration instead of focusing on
[232]
hypotheticals we teach on topics like
[234]
data and analysis, public-private
[237]
partnerships, and measuring outcomes. The
[242]
MPA program is taught by award-winning
[243]
faculty many who are also working
[247]
professionals. Next slide.
[254]
We offer two focused tracks that reflect
[257]
the current landscape of public affairs:
[259]
Public leadership and management, as well
[263]
as, nonprofit management. Each dives a bit
[266]
further into relevant subjects and
[268]
topics seen within the field. Next slide.
[277]
As for how the program relates to the
[280]
military career here are a few takeaways:
[283]
The value of public service, leadership
[287]
discussions, both at the organizational
[289]
and personal level, planning and
[292]
developing budgets, the importance of
[295]
understanding and writing policy and
[297]
procedures, and finally the ability to
[300]
sharpen your professional development by
[302]
continuing your education. Next slide. If
[313]
you think this program is indeed one you
[315]
would like to pursue here are a list of
[317]
the admission requirements. The program
[319]
has three start terms a year: spring
[322]
summer and fall. So we typically have a
[325]
window open for applications. Contact us
[328]
today to learn the next steps to
[330]
enrolling in our upcoming term. Thank you
[333]
