Can I Renegotiate Salary? I Low Balled My Salary Negotiation in the Job Interview! (YES, DO THIS!) - YouTube
Channel: Self Made Millennial
[0]
- In the job interview process
[1]
you asked for too little salary.
[3]
You low-balled yourself,
[4]
or you agreed to one
salary and you want to know
[7]
if it's too late to renegotiate.
[9]
Hey everyone, this is
Self Made Millennial.
[12]
I'm Madeline Mann, and today I will answer
[15]
all of your questions
on how to renegotiate
[18]
that salary that you deserve.
[21]
I've spent my career in human resources
[23]
as the person hiring and hearing
[26]
every backroom conversation
about your salary.
[29]
So for more career and job search tips,
[32]
make sure you subscribe to this channel,
[34]
and hit the bell for
new videos on Thursdays.
[37]
So like I said, I'm the
one on the employer side
[41]
managing these salary conversations.
[43]
So, I'll tell you how an employer reacts
[47]
when you change your salary requirement
[49]
or want to renegotiate your salary.
[51]
And how to frame it in a way
[53]
where you maintain the relationship,
[56]
and potentially land a
sweet bump in compensation.
[59]
And stay to the end because
I'm going to give you
[62]
the two magic words.
[63]
I am not kidding here, they are excellent!
[66]
These two words to kick off
this conversation smoothly
[70]
no matter your situation.
[71]
Okay, so let's start with
how an employer will react.
[75]
Now, you certainly are at risk
[77]
of an employer feeling
a bit yanked around,
[79]
which we do not want.
[81]
We need to frame this ask in the right way
[84]
and not seem pushy.
[87]
At the same time, you do not
[89]
want to negotiate against yourself,
[91]
which is common where you'll say,
[92]
"Sorry, is there any
way that we can actually
[94]
increase the salary to $120,000?"
[97]
"But if not, that's okay."
[99]
"I understand, we could also do less."
[101]
No!
[102]
If you're gonna ask, ask.
[103]
And so, I have seen candidates
renegotiate in my career
[107]
and I thought one person
framed it especially well.
[110]
He said, "I know I said
a different target salary
[113]
when we first started interviewing,
[115]
but after interviewing
with other companies
[117]
and getting a better sense of my value,
[119]
I have seen that I should
be aiming for X dollars."
[123]
It was honest, sincere,
[125]
and we still ended up
hiring him after that.
[128]
It's powerful to reference
interviews or other offers.
[132]
If you have other offers,
[133]
never be shy
[135]
to tell a company who
you're interviewing with
[137]
that you have an offer as
soon as humanly possible.
[140]
Companies are like
children on a playground.
[143]
As soon as they notice some other kid
[145]
wants to play with their Tonka truck,
[147]
they suddenly desperately want to play
[149]
with their own darn truck.
[150]
So, be that most popular
toy in the sandbox
[154]
and let companies know that you are
[156]
late in the interview
process with other companies.
[159]
Or even better, that you have an offer.
[161]
That gives them an opportunity
to counter the offer,
[164]
which makes you sittin' pretty.
[166]
If you don't have another offer,
[168]
then simply referencing
other interviews is great.
[171]
Do salary research for other companies
[174]
you interviewed for, and use that.
[176]
Say something like, "As I've
interviewed other places
[179]
and seen the demand for this skillset,
[182]
I've seen that the range in
the market is X to Y salary."
[186]
"Could we make up the difference?"
[187]
For more tips on how
to do salary research,
[190]
and negotiate salary from start to finish
[193]
in the whole interview process,
[195]
check out my full video
on salary negotiation.
[198]
It's one of my most popular videos.
[200]
I will link it in the comments
and in the description.
[203]
Okay, let's say you don't
have any other job prospects.
[207]
You simply low-balled yourself,
[209]
or want different compensation,
[211]
and that's the long and short of it.
[213]
I've gotcha, turkey.
[214]
Always start with gratitude,
[217]
talking about how much
you like the company
[219]
and appreciate being considered,
[220]
and then use these two magic words.
[223]
And those are "upon reflection".
[226]
The words upon reflection save you
[228]
from an overly verbose explanation,
[230]
and keep you sounding
competent and high value.
[233]
Such as, "Upon reflection
[235]
of thinking through my next career step,
[238]
I realize my desired
salary range is X salary."
[242]
"I know this is a change,
[243]
and I appreciate you understanding."
[245]
And what's even better is if
you don't make it personal.
[248]
You make it all data and statistics based.
[251]
So that's where this
salary research comes in.
[254]
And like I said, I will
teach you all about how to do
[257]
that salary research in
that other salary video.
[259]
Now, in the interview process,
[261]
you need to follow up to seal
the deal and land offers.
[265]
Following up is a good thing
[266]
because it shows your drive and passion.
[269]
And so, I'm going to
give you a free download
[272]
of templates of exactly
the right way to follow up.
[275]
Check out this person who got
a response within 20 minutes
[279]
of sending one of my followup emails.
[282]
I will link that free download
[284]
in the comments and in the description.
[286]
Also, I love HR!
