I Broke My First Foldable [Into The Fold Episode 6] - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
this is not a video i ever wanted to
[2]
make but
[3]
for honest i guess it was kind of
[5]
inevitable
[7]
i broke my first folding phone and
[10]
in a particularly egregious case of a
[12]
bad hair day
[14]
it's one of the only ones i've spent my
[16]
own money on
[18]
on this episode of into the fold what
[20]
happens when you
[21]
wreck your razor and why it's not a
[25]
reason to distrust either motorola or
[27]
foldables in general because this phone
[30]
didn't break the way you might think
[32]
[Music]
[38]
all right so here's how it happened i'm
[39]
walking along enjoying my sunday i got
[41]
my frankel's breakfast sandwich in one
[42]
hand my razor and the other
[44]
stay in mobile and i just drop it man
[47]
i mean literally it just falls out of my
[49]
hand for no discernible reason other
[50]
than maybe my hand is cold
[52]
crashes to the sidewalk in a horrible
[54]
murder scene
[55]
in fact it was so brutal that the
[57]
barista here
[59]
gave me a coffee on the house because
[61]
she felt bad thank you by the way cotter
[63]
barber and
[64]
coffee shop um but the phone was
[66]
destroyed
[68]
she asked me what the damage was and it
[70]
was kind of like that scene from
[71]
armageddon
[72]
what kind of damage are we damage
[76]
a total sir at least on the outside
[80]
the gorilla glass 5 back plate got a
[82]
cracked corner while the same material
[84]
up front
[85]
was totally shattered the impact
[89]
pulverized enough glass to expose the
[91]
touch controller for the quickview
[92]
display
[93]
and also broke that display itself the
[96]
only thing that's not broken
[97]
despite the fact that it fell while open
[100]
is the folding screen
[101]
on the inside yes we will come back to
[104]
that
[106]
so yeah pretty terrible start to a
[108]
sunday
[109]
it's been a while since i broke one of
[111]
my own phones normally they're
[113]
review devices anyway as i sat here
[116]
tweeting and texting and making full use
[118]
of my fully functional
[120]
foldable screen i started going through
[122]
my options
[125]
despite five years of encouraging
[127]
customers to get insurance on their
[128]
phones back when i sold them
[130]
i didn't have any on this one so knowing
[133]
i'd have to pay for a repair
[135]
i started making phone calls and from
[137]
the big corporate chains like you break
[139]
i fix
[140]
to the independent shops in brooklyn
[142]
nobody
[143]
offered repair on the new razor you guys
[146]
don't repair the razer 2020 right
[149]
no dice okay you know anybody who does
[153]
okay see should say we fixed some phone
[159]
[Music]
[160]
only one shop i called said they might
[163]
be able to do it
[164]
but the guy seemed confused about which
[165]
razor i was talking about and i wasn't
[167]
about to go all the way across the city
[169]
just to be told
[170]
they thought i was talking about a
[171]
decade old droid
[173]
this is something you unfortunately just
[175]
have to keep in mind when you're buying
[176]
a low volume device
[178]
[Music]
[181]
so i decided to go right to the source
[184]
once i got past motorola's repair portal
[186]
thinking i was in kansas
[188]
and then telling me there were no
[189]
surface locations in the entire us
[191]
it was actually pretty straightforward i
[194]
logged in
[195]
told it which of my devices i was trying
[196]
to repair and
[199]
somehow totally missed the how much will
[201]
it cost
[202]
bit here the part where it says dropping
[204]
a fragile phone on cold concrete like a
[206]
dumb dingus is a replacement
[208]
not a repair situation that might have
[211]
saved me the sticker shock when i saw
[213]
that a replacement razor
[215]
would cost me about the same as a new
[217]
razer about a thousand bucks
[221]
now again i don't blame motorola for
[223]
this the damage
[225]
is on me the refusal to use a case is on
[228]
me the lack of insurance
[230]
is on me but just before i gave up all
[233]
hope i was speaking to my friend
[235]
david amell about how i bought this
[237]
thing and he reminded me that sometimes
[240]
credit card companies don't care whose
[242]
fault it was
[244]
you see i bought the razor with my chase
[246]
visa card which has a protection plan
[248]
that can reimburse you for loss
[249]
damage or involuntary and accidental
[252]
parting
[253]
as the legalese goes assuming you bought
[255]
the product within the past 120 days
[257]
so i called up chase um after first
[260]
getting one digit of the number wrong
[262]
and having an exciting mini adventure do
[265]
you want something very special
[268]
something you find hot no restrictions
[273]
no rules right now credit card companies
[275]
have changed since i was a kid
[280]
i started the claim process by
[282]
submitting forms online
[284]
well then chase emailed me to say it
[285]
needed more forms and then i was told
[287]
that i needed to go back to one of those
[289]
repair shops to get someone to sign a
[290]
document saying how much it would cost
[292]
to repair
[294]
at publication time my claim is still
[296]
pending approval but it looks like i'm
[297]
gonna get about 500 bucks
[300]
sure it's only half the cost of the
[301]
phone but 500 for a screw-up that was my
[304]
fault
[305]
i'll take it and i'm ordering my new
[307]
liquid mercury razor
[309]
as soon as i see another holiday deal
[311]
pop up
[312]
let me know in the comments or on
[313]
twitter if you see one
[316]
now i did reach out to motorola to make
[318]
sure there wasn't a repair option i was
[319]
missing
[320]
but while the company did send over some
[322]
lovely cases as a kind of
[324]
sympathy donation thank you motorola
[326]
ironically the only special support
[328]
options for the razor
[330]
concern the one component everyone
[332]
expects to fail
[334]
the folding display
[337]
folks you are going to see this story
[340]
shared
[341]
in blog posts and quote tweets and
[345]
even people leaving comments on this
[348]
very video
[349]
without first having watched the video
[351]
if you can believe that
[353]
and they're going to say things like
[354]
well you know this is just another
[356]
example of foldables not being ready for
[358]
prime time
[362]
i would encourage those folks to um
[365]
consider this
[367]
all the damage this phone sustained in
[369]
its drop
[370]
would have been sustained by a slab
[372]
phone made of the same materials
[374]
in fact the only thing that's not
[376]
damaged
[378]
the risk of repeating myself is the
[381]
foldable part
[384]
so we know what lesson not to take from
[386]
this
[387]
let's review a few that we should take
[389]
to heart
[390]
one phones and concrete don't mix so be
[393]
careful
[394]
two if you're clumsy be safe and wear a
[398]
case
[399]
and three get insurance
[403]
you'll regret not having it when you
[404]
have to pay for the same phone twice
[407]
i'll link a nice write-up i found on the
[408]
best insurance for unlocked phones
[410]
but your wireless carrier may also offer
[412]
an option for you
[413]
and manufacturers of folding phones have
[416]
their own programs
[417]
motorola does offer several extended
[419]
warranty options that they charge
[420]
between 35 and 400 dollars for
[423]
which you can activate up to 30 days
[425]
after purchase
[426]
yeah i just missed it and samsung has
[429]
similar offers including screen
[431]
replacements on its foldable products
[433]
for a fee my final thought here
[437]
well i'm obviously sad this happened to
[439]
my favorite clam shell
[441]
the liquid mercury lining is that it
[443]
vindicates
[444]
why i make this series in the first
[446]
place
[447]
into the fold is all about long-term
[449]
foldable usage in the real world
[452]
the highs and the lows so i will
[454]
continue to use
[456]
every folding screen i can get my hands
[458]
on for
[459]
as long as i can keep hold of it and
[461]
i'll keep taking you along
[463]
on every step of the way
[466]
please subscribe to the mr mobile on
[468]
youtube so you don't miss future
[469]
installments of into the fold
[471]
the subject of this video was a retail
[473]
razer 5g unit purchased by me
[475]
michael fisher while motorola did
[477]
provide comment and
[478]
these cases on the house it certainly
[480]
didn't commission or otherwise
[482]
compensate me for this video
[483]
it'd be a really weird pr strategy and
[486]
the same goes for chase and everyone
[487]
else mentioned
[488]
this video is not sponsored the opinions
[490]
are my own and motorola is seeing it
[492]
right alongside you
[493]
for the first time until next time
[495]
thanks for watching and if you can't
[497]
stay home
[497]
then at least stay safe and mask up
[500]
while you
[501]
stay mobile my friends
[509]
you
