Why Does This $10,000 Gucci Xbox Exist? - YouTube
Channel: Marques Brownlee
[2]
you might have seen the headlines about
[4]
this thing a ten thousand dollar limited
[6]
edition gucci branded gaming console in
[10]
a special box
[11]
one of a hundred were made all custom
[14]
and now we got one right here so
[17]
might as well take it out the box shall
[18]
we i'll be honest i don't know i haven't
[20]
unboxed many gucci things but
[22]
there's a lot of leather
[24]
and gucci
[25]
x-box branding on it it actually smells
[28]
pretty good like it's leather so let's
[30]
uh let's open it up why not
[33]
one out of a hundred
[33]
[Music]
[38]
and there it is
[40]
it's the uh
[41]
it's the old green inside of a gucci box
[44]
we've all seen
[46]
actually oh here there's a uh
[49]
there's a game pass card so
[51]
somebody watching this just got a free
[52]
game pass so the inside this has some
[55]
pockets up here
[57]
okay let's get the
[59]
console out of here
[63]
okay
[65]
it's covered in gucci logos
[68]
from head to toe all the way around
[71]
uh not not on the back though just just
[74]
the front and the sides
[76]
and the rest is exactly like a normal
[79]
xbox series x i think i can put that
[84]
over here
[87]
[Music]
[92]
so you got your cables
[95]
normal hdmi cable normal power cable not
[98]
gucci branded cables
[100]
and then you have two controllers here
[103]
both of them also customized i've seen a
[106]
fair share of custom controllers in my
[108]
day
[109]
this one has the stripes the red and the
[112]
blue stripe
[113]
and the gucci font at the front
[116]
other than that normal black controller
[119]
oh and this is
[120]
one of 100 mk bhd edition so one of one
[124]
two so
[125]
they put mkbhd in green on the back oh
[129]
they put on the xbox too
[132]
there you go can you see that it says
[134]
mkbhd
[136]
on the gucci xbox
[138]
so technically this is an mkbhd gucci
[140]
collab right is that it i think that's
[142]
it oh this whole thing comes out
[146]
and then there's just more compartments
[148]
to buckle things in and it's all padded
[151]
and upholstered and
[153]
you can probably
[154]
repurpose this if you want this becomes
[157]
your
[158]
gucci
[162]
carrying case for something maybe you
[163]
take your xbox to the hotel with you
[165]
when you travel
[166]
this would be the uh
[167]
the place to carry this around
[172]
it's a lot
[175]
it's a lot
[179]
it's a lot
[181]
this is just ridiculous okay
[184]
just for the record i didn't uh buy or
[187]
customize this microsoft sent or gucci
[190]
sent it here to the studio so i don't
[192]
know who knows maybe i'll do a giveaway
[193]
of this uh
[194]
customized one of a hundred ten thousand
[196]
dollar xbox follow me on twitter for a
[199]
giveaway
[200]
of this xbox but let's take this
[201]
opportunity to talk about brand collabs
[205]
what they are
[206]
why they keep happening
[208]
and how we got here so we already know
[210]
brands just love to collaborate right
[212]
it's basically a corporate 101 strategy
[215]
for increasing brand awareness trying to
[216]
get something trending or capitalizing
[218]
on overlapping audiences oftentimes
[220]
they're really cringy but sometimes
[223]
sometimes you get something that's
[225]
pretty cool or even iconic there's nike
[227]
and playstation there's lego and ikea
[230]
uber and spotify doritos and taco bell
[233]
there was even a burger king and
[235]
mcdonald's collab believe it or not but
[237]
i want to talk about collaborations in
[238]
tech
[239]
because there are endless examples but
[242]
when i think about them in my head i
[244]
kind of divide them into two different
[245]
categories the ones that seem to make
[248]
sense
[250]
and then the ones that
[251]
seem kind of dumb so if you look at
[253]
something like apple and nike plus for
[256]
example
[257]
okay yeah makes perfect sense apple got
[259]
to add some fitness focused features to
[261]
their watch with a trusted partner to
[262]
attract more of the workout crowd and
[265]
nike gets a bunch of new customers using
[267]
nike products and exposed to the nike
[269]
brand via the machine that is apple
[271]
sales so basically it's a win win for
[274]
both companies or there was the oneplus
[276]
hasselblad collab earlier this year
[277]
that's again it makes sense it's a it's
[279]
a win-win oneplus has this new but
[282]
ongoing partnership where they get to
[284]
put the hasselblad name alongside their
[286]
smartphone cameras so that's a win for
[288]
oneplus because a lot of people who
[289]
trust the hasselblad name in photography
[292]
will now associate oneplus with high
[294]
quality cameras whether it's true or not
[296]
and it's the win for hasselblad a pretty
[298]
traditional old-timey camera company who
[300]
can now associate their name with an
[303]
upstart trendy smartphone company to
[305]
signal that they're high-tech and
[307]
fashion-forward you know this happens
[308]
with leica all the time too so whether
[310]
they're cringy or super corporate or not
[312]
whatever the vibe is there are a number
[314]
of brand collabs all around the tech
[316]
industry every year that makes sense
[319]
and then there are
[321]
monstrosities like this because on the
[324]
surface in the tech world this seems
[326]
dumb it's a gucci xbox why would that be
[328]
better than a regular xbox does a gucci
[330]
xbox perform or play games better in
[334]
some way do i get anything out of having
[336]
a gucci xbox of course not but if you've
[339]
noticed there's actually been a lot of
[342]
tech collaborations like this tech
[344]
companies collaborating with fashion
[347]
companies fashion brands so tech
[349]
products are in this weird place where
[351]
most of the stuff you buy is supposed to
[353]
be purely functional right you buy a
[355]
piece of tech because it accomplishes a
[357]
task or serves a certain function it's a
[359]
computer that does the thing you need it
[361]
to but not necessarily because of the
[363]
fashion
[364]
but whether we like to admit it or not
[366]
there is a personal element to all these
[368]
purchases i've always said the
[370]
smartphone you buy is actually one of
[372]
the most personal choices you make you
[374]
hold it every day you take it everywhere
[377]
with you it wakes you up in the morning
[379]
you feel kind of empty and lost without
[381]
it so even though it is just a piece of
[383]
tech it's no wonder the companies that
[385]
sell them want you to feel like they're
[386]
also pretty fashionable in addition to
[389]
being a good piece of tech you might
[391]
remember lg collaborated with prada on
[393]
smartphones three different times
[395]
samsung collaborated with hugo boss on a
[398]
smartphone back in 2008 and again in
[400]
2011 louis vuitton collaborated recently
[402]
with headphone maker master and dynamic
[404]
to sell some 995 earbuds there was a
[408]
gold dolce gabbana razor three a decade
[412]
ago and i think apple and hermes may be
[415]
the best example of them all
[418]
hermes
[419]
i never know if i'm saying that right
[420]
hermes
[421]
hermes hermes right but i just remember
[424]
so distinctly when the apple watch went
[426]
on sale the first one went on sale back
[427]
in 2015
[429]
and apple they of course made a couple
[431]
versions there was a black version and a
[432]
silver version it was stainless steel
[434]
but they wanted to of course signify
[436]
that it was fashionable because it's a
[438]
watch and they have to get the fashion
[440]
crowd to like it and so they made the
[442]
apple watch edition and this version was
[445]
plated in solid 18 karat gold and it
[448]
started at ten thousand dollars now
[451]
anybody already subscribed here to this
[453]
channel probably already knows that it's
[455]
a bad idea to drop 10 bands on a first
[458]
gen tech product
[461]
just because it's covered in gold and
[462]
you think it's fashionable but that
[464]
that's that's a real thing people did
[465]
that's out there like the real humans
[467]
actually spent that money on the first
[469]
gen apple watch tech blogs had a field
[471]
day with the headlines we already knew
[472]
this was coming but yeah a year later
[475]
there was a new one the addition was
[477]
discontinued
[478]
of course it turns out apple even as
[481]
massive and popular and successful and
[483]
wealthy as they are can't break into
[487]
fashion immediately just by themselves
[489]
on their own name and so shortly after
[491]
that we did see the beginning of that
[492]
hermes collaboration so that fashion
[494]
brand comes in they start to do custom
[496]
watch bands unique styles with leather
[499]
that match the watch faces and custom
[501]
packaging and higher prices because you
[503]
know it's fashion that's kind of the way
[504]
things work but that that collaboration
[506]
has been way more successful it
[507]
continues to this day and it's a win-win
[510]
for both companies hermes gets a much
[512]
more tech focused crowd and apple gets
[515]
to break into the much more
[517]
fashion-centric crowd so fundamentally
[519]
that's what they're always looking for
[520]
in these brand collaborations is a win
[522]
for both sides that win-win
[525]
kind of like mkbhd
[527]
and new channel sponsor cash app cash
[529]
app is incredible i get to share with
[530]
you guys they're the easiest way to send
[532]
spend and save money and you can buy
[535]
stocks or even bitcoin with a dollar so
[537]
if you use code marquez to sign up 15
[539]
bucks will appear in your account it's
[541]
not bad and then 10 will go to girls who
[544]
code link below but the point is the
[546]
point is this none of these
[549]
tech fashion collabs actually makes the
[552]
product better like
[554]
none of them that's not the point of
[556]
this type of collab now you could argue
[558]
that the tech on tech collabs actually
[561]
do you could say if oneplus and
[564]
hasselblad are collaborating that that
[565]
actually can make the camera in the
[567]
phone a bit better you could argue that
[570]
you could argue the nike plus and apple
[572]
sponsorship and collaboration actually
[575]
made a better product but
[577]
this is just a monogrammed
[579]
xbox series x it's not a better xbox uh
[583]
the dolce gabbana razer was just a gold
[587]
razor it's more about the experience of
[590]
taking it out of the box the custom
[591]
packaging the fashion nature of it
[594]
whatever you think about this fashion
[597]
that's what that collab is more about
[598]
and then there's also the x factor which
[600]
is just hype so brands have various
[604]
levels of this and in a world where the
[605]
playstation 5 from rival sony was pretty
[608]
much the most hyped thing in gaming for
[610]
a whole year around its release i mean
[612]
it's still impossible to get so
[614]
microsoft and their brand team is of
[615]
course looking for ways to get people
[617]
talking about and thinking about xbox
[619]
series x which came out around the same
[621]
time and what better way than by
[623]
creating a limited edition super hyped
[626]
special xbox with one of the most hyped
[628]
companies so even though the product
[630]
isn't actually better the hype and all
[632]
the brand awareness created by this
[634]
collab
[635]
is a win-win for both companies so
[637]
that's why the gucci xbox exists this
[640]
honestly probably would have been
[641]
received the exact same way if it was a
[643]
supreme xbox or i don't know louis
[646]
vuitton xbox it's just they just want
[647]
people saying xbox more you know and
[650]
it's working
[651]
is it's working isn't it i'm here
[652]
sitting on video talking about it and
[655]
now it's on youtube going into their
[656]
brand sentiment calculator and of course
[659]
there's no dislikes on this video so it
[662]
must be working but yeah the truth is i
[664]
divided them into two different
[665]
categories at the beginning of this
[666]
video those that seem to make sense and
[668]
those that don't but at the end of the
[670]
day when you look at it as a win-win in
[672]
some way they kind of all do make some
[675]
level of sense so i wouldn't be shocked
[677]
if we keep seeing
[679]
more of this type of stuff
[681]
thanks for watching catch the next one
[683]
peace
