[105]
(piano music)
[107]
- As much as car dealerships are ingrained in our society.
[109]
Most people don't know how they work.
[111]
(pensive music)
[113]
- [Nolan] When a dealership buys cars
[114]
directly from the manufacturer,
[116]
they're looking at some pretty hefty price tags.
[118]
It takes an incredible amount of capital to buy an entire
[121]
parking lot's worth of new vehicles.
[123]
And the dealership needs some leftover cash
[125]
for operating costs.
[126]
So what do they do?
[127]
Well, the same thing anyone who wants something,
[130]
but doesn't have the cash does.
[132]
They open a line of credit?
[133]
(atm machine ejects money)
[135]
The dealership agrees to take a bunch of cars on loan that
[138]
they think they can sell.
[139]
Allowing the dealership to keep their own capital
[142]
available for other business operations
[143]
like payroll and service center costs.
[146]
But just like with any loan, there are terms involved,
[148]
and that includes monthly interest.
[149]
The longer that loan is not paid in full,
[151]
the more expensive each car really was for that dealership.
[154]
So how do they pay back that loan and get interest back?
[157]
Well, that gets passed down to you and I, the consumer.
[162]
you might be thinking Nolan, what does this
[163]
have to do with rich people?
[164]
Well, I'm going to tell you.
[164]
This is the first way rich people get cheaper prices.
[166]
(suspenseful music)
[167]
A wealthy person with stacks on stacks on stacks
[169]
is going to walk down into dealership,
[171]
lay down a fat down payment, if not buy
[173]
the car outright and help generate capital for
[176]
the dealership to pay back those loans pretty quickly
[179]
avoiding additional interest on that vehicle.
[181]
Therefore, the dealerships will be willing to cut
[183]
all kinds of deals with that buyer offering
[186]
all kinds of incentives for getting that car off the lot
[188]
and free the dealership from
[190]
their loan as quick as possible.
[192]
The credit check will be solid.
[194]
No chance the payments won't be made,
[195]
and they can rest a little easier about the floor plan
[197]
financing interest still looming over the rest of the lot.
[201]
So if you're a solid bet, because you've got mad money,
[203]
you have the upper hand in these negotiations,
[206]
but being flushed with cash,
[207]
isn't the only way to have the upper hand.
[209]
Another way to get a good deal, if you can afford it
[211]
is to own a company.
[212]
Sounds easy enough, right?
[214]
Who doesn't have an LLC these days?
[216]
Uh, I don't.
[217]
If you do have an LLC, you're golden when you go
[219]
to buy your next car, because there are so many ways
[222]
this cuts your final price.
[223]
First, let me just say two words, "company car",
[227]
(door swivels and shuts)
[228]
(soft rousing music)
[229]
Buying the car through your company, using company funds
[231]
will have no impact on your personal credit,
[234]
which is a good baseline to start from.
[235]
It will make it company property, but along with
[238]
that designation comes tax deductions like crazy.
[241]
If you have a tax advisor who knows anything about
[244]
what used to be called the "hummer loophole,"
[246]
you can take up to a 100% deduction.
[249]
Why is it called a hummer loophole?
[251]
Well, because the bigger the car, the bigger the deduction.
[254]
(upbeat music)
[255]
- [Nolan] The two vehicle types under consideration are
[257]
light vehicles and heavy vehicles.
[260]
Light vehicles refer to anything that
[262]
weighs under 6,000 pounds.
[263]
You'll hit April tax time with a
[265]
depreciation limit on those.
[267]
If you choose a larger SUV truck or van, one say between
[271]
6,000 and 14,000 pounds, tax code section 179 gives you
[275]
a much larger deduction cap on that.
[278]
(upbeat music)
[280]
Just to give you example, if you buy a heavy truck for
[282]
$95,000 and you're in the 35% tax bracket,
[286]
meaning pretty wealthy, your deduction could
[288]
reduce your taxes by $33,250.
[292]
(sound of coins dropping)
[294]
(machine register rings)
[297]
Holy Sh**!
[298]
So does that mean donut could buy, I don't know,
[300]
a Hennessy mammoth 1000 and write it off?
[302]
Hmm, interesting.
[304]
Of course, all of this is dependent on lots of
[306]
strict IRS tax codes and allowances,
[309]
and things an average buyer is probably
[310]
not going to understand, but if you have enough wealth
[313]
to afford a very fancy tax professional,
[315]
they can definitely guide you into some significant savings.
[318]
An advantage someone who uses online
[321]
tax software on April 14th, probably doesn't have.
[324]
And I use that example because
[325]
that's basically what I've been doing.
[327]
And if you're thinking Nolan, buying a heavy duty car
[329]
rules out everything I would even want to drive.
[331]
Think again!
[332]
You know what else sits squarely in that category?
[334]
The Mercedes G class.
[336]
(upbeat blues music)
[338]
- [Nolan] One Mercedes dealer I found, even has a page
[341]
blatantly advertising the deduction savings,
[343]
which if you're going to use on the
[344]
Mercedes G63 AMG six by six, clocking in at
[348]
one and a half million for the super pickup,
[350]
uh, you might want to look into it.
[351]
Actually, a lot of luxury SUV dealerships do this.
[354]
I found a page for Land Rover talking about their
[357]
tax deductions and how to do that.
[359]
I believe the Lamborghini Urus qualifies
[362]
for a heavy duty vehicle.
[363]
I believe the Audi SQ8 also qualifies.
[366]
I'm not sure if the Tesla model X does.
[369]
We can look into that.
[370]
(keyboard typing)
[375]
Like this is a reason you see
[377]
[Nolan} so many 'gatti SUV's in LA and other
[380]
metropolitan areas because a lot of people
[382]
are using them for tax deductions.
[384]
Even though the law was created for farmers,
[386]
in the first place to buy heavy trucks.
[388]
Now it's being used by wealthy yuppies in the Palisades.
[391]
Another nifty loophole to save money while buying and
[394]
registering a car is to use your company to
[396]
register the cars out of State.
[399]
See, that company you have is paying off in so many ways.
[401]
This sounds shady and truth be told, it sort of is.
[405]
No matter what State you actually live in,
[406]
you can in fact, own a car registered
[409]
in a state like Montana, where there's no sales tax.
[411]
Delaware, New Hampshire or Oregon plates
[413]
are also great, If you can get them.
[415]
that's kind of the gist of it.
[416]
We actually did a whole video on this subject.
[418]
You can click right here.
[419]
[Nolan] Most of the time when you see a
[420]
super car or RV with Montana plates, it's actually
[424]
a rich person from a different state
[426]
who does think they're better than you.
[428]
(Upbeat hip hop music)
[429]
[Nolan] Another way that rich people can get cars
[431]
for free is by having a lot of clout.
[433]
Now I know this isn't just something you can go do,
[436]
but being an influencer has its upsides.
[438]
Influencers get paid serious bucks by car companies
[441]
just to post a quick pick of them with the brand's vehicles.
[444]
It happens all the time on social media.
[446]
There probably isn't a day that goes by
[448]
that you don't see this kind of stuff.
[449]
As the years have passed though, the price tags
[451]
or posts have grown, and this source claims that
[454]
one car company paid $300,000 for just
[457]
a few photographs from a specific influencer.
[460]
Again, it's not a discount or directly just
[463]
giving them a car that we know of,
[464]
but much of that cash could buy
[466]
a few of whatever you want to drive.
[468]
That would buy a lot of BMW MT's or two mammoth 1000's.
[472]
While all those loopholes are great for the rich.
[474]
What about the rest of us average people
[476]
without companies or fleets?
[477]
Well, according to one anonymous ex-car salesman,
[480]
there are a few things that might help you get closer
[483]
to the price you want on the car you want,
[485]
even if you aren't wealthy.
[486]
- [Nolan] First ask for what you want,
[488]
even if you think it's too low,
[489]
be honest with yourself about your budget.
[491]
Always remember that the sticker price
[493]
isn't the final price of the car.
[495]
There are a lot of factors that go into
[496]
the actual cost you'll owe, including financing, fees
[499]
and any add-ons, like floor mats.
[502]
Can you afford it now? Be honest.
[503]
Be prepared and know when to walk out.
[505]
A lot of people just assume they're getting as good a deal
[508]
as they can get, but that's never actually the case.
[510]
They'll probably call you back with a better deal.
[512]
Car dealers are very good at putting you under pressure
[515]
and making you feel like you got to buy a car right now.
[517]
Otherwise your dad will die. That's not true.
[520]
Your dad will be just fine.
[521]
You can walk out and the car will most likely still
[524]
be there, unless it's like a Corvette C8
[525]
or a Hyundai Santa Cruz.
[527]
Either way, I'm still going to be buying used cars
[529]
for the time being.
[530]
Or not buying a car at all because uh,
[532]
it's really expensive right now.
[533]
And I'm not in that 35% bracket yet.
[536]
(keyboard typing)
[537]
(pensive music)
[538]
(horse neighing)
[540]
- [Narrator] It's been years, but...
[542]
(laptop slams shut)
[542]
... the comment still haunts me.
[545]
more HRSPRS? Was it even possible?
[550]
(loud thud)
[551]
How much horse is too much horse?
[553]
(pensive music)
[555]
I had to know!
[556]
(explosion)
[557]
Test after test. Failure after failure.
[562]
I began to doubt that I'd ever find out. Then it happened.
[567]
- I think I have it.
[570]
I THINK I HAVE IT!!!
[572]
I've done it. I've done it.
[575]
