How I Save More Than 69.5% Of My Income - Financial Independence FIRE Movement - YouTube

Channel: Jarrad Morrow

[0]
every now and again I like to sit down
[1]
and take a deeper dive into my finances
[3]
when I was running the numbers recently
[5]
I realized that my savings rate had
[7]
jumped by 10 percent okay so I don't
[9]
actually save sixty nine point five
[11]
percent of my income but I do save 70
[14]
percent of my income every single month
[16]
so in this video I'm gonna walk you
[18]
through how I save 70 percent of my
[20]
income every single month the goal is to
[23]
hopefully give you some ideas to explore
[25]
for yourself so you can greatly increase
[27]
your savings rate kind of like I have if
[30]
that sounds interesting to you then
[31]
please Hulk smash that thumbs up button
[33]
I would greatly appreciate it and it
[35]
helps show my mom that I'm not as big of
[37]
a loser as she thinks I am I think it's
[39]
safe to say that there is a big savings
[41]
problem when it comes to Americans not
[43]
because we're all idiots but because you
[45]
don't know what you don't know but once
[47]
you know it it's one of those things
[48]
where you're like oh okay
[51]
I get it now it's the same thing with
[53]
maxing out your savings rate it's
[54]
honestly not rocket science and way way
[57]
way more attainable to increase your
[59]
savings rate than you think
[60]
I would go as far as saying that
[62]
everyone watching this is able to do 90%
[64]
of the things that I'll show you but
[66]
even if you can only do 50% of these
[68]
things that I talked about the net right
[69]
there will greatly increase your savings
[72]
and investment rate in a way that you
[73]
didn't even think was possible now when
[75]
you hear that I'm saving 70 percent of
[77]
my income then your natural thought may
[79]
be
[79]
well you must make a lot of money back
[81]
or you must be so deprived that you're
[83]
not enjoying your life um actually I
[86]
have pretty much everything that I want
[87]
and need if I want something then of
[90]
course I buy it there is ZERO
[92]
deprivation or cheapness going on over
[95]
here in this house if you want to make
[96]
this happen then you just have to get a
[97]
few things right don't forget to hit
[99]
that subscribe button if you want more
[100]
personal finance videos just like this
[102]
one there's also all kinds of playlists
[104]
in the description for you to check out
[106]
after you watch this video to help you
[107]
out with all of your personal finance
[109]
needs let's get into how I save is
[111]
seventy percent of my income every
[112]
single month write me out
[114]
the first reason my savings rate is so
[116]
high is that I don't have kids now
[119]
before you get all angry start typing
[121]
ignorant things in the comments and
[123]
giving this video a thumbs down I'm just
[125]
being honest and I'm owning the fact
[127]
that this does play a role in my high
[128]
savings rate so Hulk smash that thumbs
[130]
up button for honesty this is coming
[132]
from a guy who really
[133]
likes children and is absolutely open to
[135]
having kids in the future if I can find
[137]
a smokin hot wife that wants to have all
[139]
of my babies I can I can't we don't say
[143]
I can't we say either I can or I will
[146]
try I will try we don't say I can't nope
[150]
we say I can or I will try there you go
[154]
good job or maybe I'll even adopt a kid
[156]
in the future who knows but I'm able to
[158]
have more money in my pocket today since
[161]
I'm not caring for a cute and sometimes
[163]
annoying little monster the more
[165]
important thing to take away from here
[166]
is that if you have kids now or gonna
[168]
have them in the future don't lick the
[170]
fact that you have kids prevent you from
[172]
increasing your income to increase your
[174]
savings rate it's one of those limiting
[176]
beliefs that's extremely easy to fall
[178]
into a fear parent because you're
[180]
already working hard enough caring for
[182]
these kids so how in the world are you
[184]
supposed to make more money as well the
[186]
majority of my friends are parents and a
[188]
lot of them have found ways to increase
[190]
their income in ways that they never
[192]
thought before another thing parents can
[194]
do is make their kids work as early as
[196]
possible and start paying for things on
[198]
their own the skin greatly increase your
[200]
savings rate if you are a parent now I
[202]
know when I was 14 I started working and
[204]
paying for everything myself
[206]
and I honestly think it's played a huge
[208]
role in shaping Who I am today
[210]
you should also force your kids to apply
[211]
for scholarships if they go to college
[213]
so you have to worry about having to
[215]
save money for them every single munch
[216]
munch munch month which will greatly
[219]
increase your savings rate paying off
[221]
eighty two thousand dollars of debt in
[223]
four years is still one of the best
[225]
decisions I've ever made it's also a
[228]
large contributing factor to how I'm
[230]
able to save and invest seventy percent
[232]
of my income every single month my debt
[234]
consistent of student loans a credit
[235]
card and a car loan carrying debt has
[238]
become so common among Americans that
[240]
it's something that everyone just
[241]
accepts as something that they'll always
[243]
have kind of like that pet turtle that I
[245]
got from one of my exes that thing's
[246]
gonna live forever
[247]
bad debt will be one of the largest
[249]
destroyers of your wealth above anything
[252]
else if you allowed to hang around until
[254]
the day that you die it's like lighting
[255]
money on fire every single month not
[258]
only are you losing money through the
[260]
interest that you're paying but you
[261]
carry around this a large amount of risk
[263]
everywhere you go it follows you
[266]
for ever for and bur name that movie in
[270]
the comments if you know what it is when
[271]
you carry bad debt you lock yourself
[273]
into being vulnerable to the insanity
[275]
that's already here in life your back is
[277]
instantly in a corner every single
[279]
morning that you wake up and whoever you
[281]
owe money to literally owns you they own
[284]
your thoughts they own your feelings
[286]
they own your emotions they choose what
[288]
you can and can't do and they own your
[291]
happiness stupid people spend money that
[293]
they don't have on things that they
[295]
don't need I decided to stop being
[297]
stupid and only buy things that I can
[299]
actually afford by saving up for it you
[301]
can't know how much you were saving
[303]
unless you know where it's going because
[305]
of this a budget is extremely important
[307]
to my ability to be able to save 70
[310]
percent of my income budgeting isn't
[311]
about being cheap at all it's just a way
[313]
for you to direct your money and tell it
[315]
where to go as opposed to having to tell
[317]
you where it wants to go which is
[319]
usually right down the toilet if you're
[321]
not paying attention I recently heard
[323]
about an author that was trashing
[325]
budgets because he said they prevent you
[327]
from earning more money and being happy
[329]
since they forced you to cut back he
[331]
said it gives the person a scarcity
[333]
mindset my answer to this author is you
[335]
sir are an idiot because what prevents a
[338]
person from making more money has more
[340]
to do with a person not going out to
[342]
pursue more money a budget has
[344]
absolutely nothing to do with that a
[346]
budget is a way for you to prioritize
[347]
your spending so that more of it goes
[349]
towards things that actually make you
[351]
happy and will improve your lifestyle
[353]
today and in the future I think there's
[355]
been enough studies done on this that
[357]
buying more things does not correlate to
[359]
becoming more happy so if you love
[361]
buying clothes and that makes you the
[363]
happiest person in the world then that's
[365]
great budget for clothes and buy those
[368]
clothes
[368]
if pursuing financial independence or
[370]
retire early will make you super happy
[372]
then great budget your money so you can
[374]
achieve financial independence or early
[377]
retirement can you increase your savings
[379]
right without a budget I'm sure you can
[381]
of course you can do anything you want
[383]
but I could also go swimming with sharks
[385]
and not get bit but I'm still not gonna
[387]
hop in that ocean to do it no thanks no
[390]
way you can jump in on your own if you
[392]
want the next reason I'm able to save 70
[394]
percent of my income is that I don't
[396]
spend insane amounts of money on car
[398]
purchases does this mean
[400]
I only Drive beaters nope not at all
[403]
instead I choose to buy more reliable
[405]
car models that have a better track
[407]
record with cash of course
[409]
the whiff cache and used parts are the
[411]
keys to success since I pay cash I don't
[413]
have to shell out extra money every
[415]
single month through the interest that
[416]
I'd be paying I actually haven't paid
[418]
cash for a car yet since I still own the
[420]
car I used to have a loan out for but I
[422]
finally have enough cash sitting in a
[424]
high inter savings account for when my
[427]
current car dies when that time comes
[429]
I'll buy a used car preferably something
[431]
over five years old to avoid that
[433]
depreciation that everyone faces on a
[435]
new car five years is the secret number
[437]
since the average car loses 60% of its
[440]
value through depreciation within the
[442]
first five years so instead of paying
[444]
interest by taking out a loan on a car I
[447]
now save that money in a high interest
[449]
savings account where I make money
[451]
well that cash just sits there until I
[453]
buy into my next car you'll never find
[454]
me taking a loan out on a car ever again
[457]
in my life this one has actually been
[458]
easier to do than most people make it
[460]
out to be
[461]
I spend a very minimal amount of my
[463]
monthly income on housing by minimal I'm
[466]
talking way less than 15% of my
[468]
take-home pay I've seen stats out there
[470]
saying that the average housing costs
[472]
are roughly 30 percent of most people's
[474]
income knowing this it was extremely
[476]
important for me to find a way to lower
[478]
this amount by as much as I possibly
[480]
could so I bought a house for a very
[483]
modest amount to be honest with you I
[484]
think that most homes are money pits a
[486]
lot of people look at their home as an
[488]
investment and sometimes they are but to
[490]
just assume that buying a home will
[492]
somehow generate you return is the wrong
[494]
way to look at a home purchase my home
[496]
isn't a complete dump at all I actually
[498]
think it's a pretty nice house for a
[500]
cheap price that I paid in the area that
[502]
I'm in and plus none of the women that
[503]
I've ever dated have felt unsafe in this
[505]
area either so that's a win in my book
[507]
well I buy a more established home later
[509]
down the line possibly but until then
[512]
I'm banking all of the extra cash that I
[514]
would be paid for a nicer home and
[517]
letting that money work in my favor
[519]
through investments another contributing
[521]
factor to my high savings rate when it
[523]
comes to housing is that I live
[524]
extremely close to work like 5 minutes
[527]
10 minutes tops
[529]
not only does this save time but it also
[531]
saves money when it comes to gas
[533]
and wear and tear in my car when it's
[534]
nice out I'll even throw my tennis shoes
[536]
on and walk to work I get that not
[538]
everyone can do this but I bet that you
[539]
could find a way to make this work for
[540]
your specific situation unless you live
[542]
in a high cost of living state like
[544]
California then I would just tell you to
[546]
move somewhere else if you were
[547]
interested in getting an idea if you
[549]
live in a high cost of living area then
[551]
I find a website that you might want to
[552]
check out it is called best places Nets
[555]
head to that website and type in this
[557]
city that you live in then click on the
[559]
cost of living link to the side it'll
[561]
rate your city based on the US average
[563]
score of 100 the sixth reason I'm able
[566]
to save 70 percent of my income is that
[568]
I don't have a girlfriend so naturally
[571]
there's more money in my pocket don't
[573]
get mad I'm just kidding kind of but I
[574]
am very conscious when it comes to date
[576]
in the past the first couple of times
[578]
that I would meet a girl I would spend a
[580]
lot of money taking them out to dinner
[582]
the whole wine and dine thing because
[584]
that's just how I was raised but after a
[586]
while I looked at the amount of money
[588]
that I would spend and kind of threw up
[590]
a little bit in my mouth not because I
[591]
wasn't attracted to any of them but
[593]
because that money really really adds up
[595]
especially when you're a lifelong dater
[597]
like I I knew that I wasn't gonna stop
[599]
dating to keep my savings rate up that'd
[601]
be a little bit ridiculous but I knew
[603]
that something needed to change now I
[606]
have a rule when it comes to dating the
[608]
first few times that I hang out with a
[609]
woman I either take them out for coffee
[611]
or we do something that's fun for free
[614]
or very low cost not only does this save
[616]
some money until I decide if I really
[618]
like this girl and actually want to
[620]
spend more money on her but it also
[622]
prevents any bad decisions that may be
[625]
made if I went out drinking at a bar
[627]
with a girl on the first date I know
[629]
this might be strange to some of you out
[630]
there but I'm trying to avoid an
[632]
illegitimate child with a woman that I
[634]
don't like
[635]
I guess I'm weird like that the takeaway
[638]
from this one isn't to break up with
[639]
your significant other but instead talk
[642]
about your money goals so you're both on
[644]
the same page the next way I'm able to
[646]
save 70% of my income is by fasting now
[649]
I know this isn't for everyone and I'm
[651]
not telling you go fast but getting on a
[653]
diet where I only eat twice a day or
[655]
within a specific feeding window has has
[658]
decreased how much money that I spend on
[660]
food every single month plus I like the
[662]
other health benefits from it as well
[664]
don't worry
[664]
I won't nerd out on that kind of stuff
[666]
in this video if fasting doesn't sound
[668]
appealing to you then get on a different
[669]
diet that you'll stick to the main
[671]
reason this is gonna help you save money
[672]
is that it puts more structure around
[674]
the things that you're putting into your
[676]
mouth and do not in a gross way you
[678]
freaks get your mind out of the gutter
[679]
please instead of snacking all day like
[682]
you're at a buffet you'll get a better
[684]
handle on your food intake which will
[686]
have an impact on how much money you're
[689]
spending on food every single month plus
[691]
you'll start to feel a little bit better
[692]
in general the eighth way that I'm able
[694]
to save 70 percent of my income every
[696]
single month is by making my health a
[698]
top priority a New York Times article
[700]
cited a study that exercising can save
[703]
you $2,500 per year on medical costs
[706]
this study looked at over 26,000 men and
[709]
women it concluded that inactivity cost
[712]
the United States economy almost twenty
[714]
eight billion dollars in medical
[716]
expenses and lost productivity every
[718]
single year that's exactly why you see
[721]
many companies out there that have
[722]
fitness and health focused programs it
[724]
saves both you and them more money in
[727]
the long run here's the three areas that
[729]
I focus on when it comes to my health
[730]
number one is my nutritional health the
[733]
food that I eat it kind of goes along
[734]
with what I mentioned with fasting next
[737]
is with my physical health
[739]
I built a garage gym that I workout in I
[741]
do indoor workouts I'm also at my local
[743]
park all the time running hiking and
[746]
doing some other things that are very
[748]
physically active out there lastly I
[750]
make my mental health a top priority as
[752]
well you may be questioning how this
[754]
saves money the way that I look at it is
[756]
that if is that if my mental health is
[759]
in order then I can be an even more
[761]
happy and productive human being in
[763]
general I take care of this mental
[764]
health through daily meditation and
[766]
writing the ninth way I'm able to save
[768]
70 percent of my income is that I don't
[770]
ever get a raise at work okay I do get a
[773]
regular race from work at my job but I
[775]
don't ever see that money in my monthly
[777]
paycheck that's because every pay
[779]
increase that I've received over the
[781]
past couple of years has gone straight
[782]
to investments so technically I never
[785]
get a raise my overall wealth gets a
[788]
raise if I get a $10,000 raise at work
[790]
then I calculate how much of it I'll
[792]
actually be taking home then increase my
[794]
investments by that amount out of sight
[796]
out
[797]
mind until I calculate my net worth
[800]
every single month and get a great big
[802]
smile on my face once I see that numbers
[804]
start to grow some people might look at
[806]
this as me depriving myself but it's not
[808]
like that at all
[809]
I've been able to find the amount that I
[811]
need to live on that makes me
[812]
comfortable and happy so I make it a
[814]
point to stick to that number the tenth
[816]
way I'm able to save 70 percent of my
[818]
income is because I'm a bit of a
[820]
minimalist but it's not like I don't own
[822]
things so minimalist isn't the best word
[825]
for it I guess you could say that I'm
[827]
warm and it an intentional list if
[830]
that's even a word I like spending money
[832]
but only on the things that really bring
[834]
me value and happiness minimalism has
[836]
taught me to kind of take a step back
[838]
and question how much value something is
[840]
going to give me if I do end up bringing
[843]
it into my life it's made me realize
[844]
that buying more and more things doesn't
[847]
make me happy which is which in turn has
[849]
saved me from spending money on useless
[851]
things just to keep up with the Joneses
[854]
whoever they are which in turn has given
[857]
me the ability to save more to invest
[859]
last but not least I use credit cards
[862]
which saves me a pretty good amount of
[864]
money every single year I know that Dave
[866]
Ramsey tells you not to use credit cards
[868]
and I have a lot of respect for Dave
[870]
because he's an OG in the personal
[872]
finance space I don't agree with
[873]
everything he teaches but I got respect
[876]
from the guy but I've been able to be
[878]
responsible with my credit card use and
[880]
if you were able to be responsible when
[882]
it caused you or credit cards and pay
[884]
the balance off every single month then
[886]
you can reap the benefits of the rewards
[888]
from those credit cards as of today I
[890]
make roughly 600 dollars per year from
[893]
my credit card use that's more money I'm
[895]
making for basically buying things that
[897]
I would have already been buying I'll be
[899]
doing more credit card hacking this year
[900]
so that's $600 most likely we turn it
[903]
into things like rewards towards airfare
[905]
but it's still the same idea if you
[907]
don't feel comfortable using a credit
[908]
card then don't do it but if you feel
[910]
like you're ready and you could handle
[912]
it then quit leaving money on the table
[914]
and go get a credit card with really
[916]
good rewards don't forget to check out
