[4]
Hello and welcome to another episode of Backseat Driver
[7]
Today we are at somewhere new
[10]
Yes and I wished that this was our studio
[14]
Sorry no budget
[16]
Unfortunately
[17]
This place actually belongs to Car Buyers Club
[20]
and today we're doing a video in collaboration with Car Buyers Club
[24]
Car Buyers Club is a consignment dealer
[26]
and today we're talking about whether consignment is for you or not
[31]
Let me begin with my own experiences
[34]
selling my very first car
[36]
I had zero experience, my focus then was just to
[40]
buy the new car, the new car was shiny and everything
[43]
I cared only about the new car so when I went to the authorised dealer
[47]
I only though that, "Oh just trade-in the car"
[50]
I knew that people were selling cars on their own
[54]
on other platforms in other ways but
[57]
to me trade-in was the most fuss-free convenient thing
[61]
that I didn't need to deal with anything else except sign some papers
[65]
at the authorised dealer when I bought my new car
[67]
It was only after starting at sgCarMart
[71]
starting work here, talking to you guys, and other people In the industry
[75]
that I realised that actually selling cars
[78]
other than trading in may get you even more money for your car
[84]
I completely agree actually, what do you think Idris?
[86]
I completely agree, the point where you said that. you can get more money
[90]
there are other ways to sell your car not just trading in but of course
[93]
trading in probably one of the most fuss-free
[96]
but that said I would probably just sell the car myself
[98]
Right there are various platforms you can advertise to sell the car yourself
[103]
to a direct buyer, you are a direct seller, selling to a direct buyer
[106]
sgCarMart is one of them of course
[108]
It's fuss-free, you can probably get more money out of it no
[111]
I mean and the paperwork is quite straightforward as well
[113]
Yes the paperwork is straightforward if your buyer is straightforward as well
[119]
If the buyer has some issues applying loans
[121]
and you decide to help him with the application
[123]
or he applies it himself and he mixes up some details
[128]
he won't get the loan and you are stuck with your car
[130]
especially if you have another car coming along the way
[133]
For you I'm pretty sure you just drove into the dealer and took your new car
[138]
and that was that right
[140]
Said bye-bye to my car
[141]
That's the fuss-free experience of it all but the value
[144]
I think it's quite different, I always believe in direct selling because
[148]
you probably can get more money out of it, can reap more stuff
[151]
I used to like direct selling because the paperwork
[154]
is something I can do and understand also but right now
[158]
I actually like consigning my cars because it's pretty easy
[164]
But is it as fuss free, do you get as much money out of it?
[166]
It is quite fuss free because the thing is you can meet the price that you want
[171]
but usually consignment dealers they take a percentage out of it
[175]
which is fine compared to how much you lose when you trade-in your car
[180]
and there is that convenience because they can grab the car for you
[183]
or you can wait somewhere and do it for you that kind of stuff
[187]
So when consignment dealers I think a lot of people have a very bad image about it
[193]
everyone does because this fella will call
[197]
"Eh you want to consign your car?"
[199]
you end up at like Kallang Mcdonalds with your car in the hot sun
[203]
I actually had a bad experience when I wanted to sell my Austin Mini
[207]
a consignment dealer called me and said
[209]
"Oh I noticed that you've been trying to sell your car online yourself"
[212]
"Do you want to consign?"
[216]
I said okay do whatever you have to do but
[219]
nothing happened
[221]
and I don't I asked for a very high price but just nothing happened
[224]
there just wasn't any updates
[225]
but if you sell your car yourself you can actually do it
[228]
you will have people texting you, can I do this, can I do that so
[233]
I'm a bit skeptical about the whole consignment thing
[234]
but okay let me stop you there, when people text you and
[238]
ask you to meet up and they lowball you, aren't you
[242]
isn't that a headache that you have to deal with these people yourself
[246]
Not really, I feel happy, I feel happy that people are actually looking at my car
[252]
and they are potential interested buyers
[255]
His Austin Mini was the one which the aircon didn't work sometimes
[258]
It was a temperamental vintage car
[260]
They all work but they don't work altogether
[264]
When I turn on the aircon and I drive it will get overheated, it will overheat so
[268]
So when you meet buyers you have to explain this over and over again
[273]
I mean it is a very cool car
[276]
so the type of buyers interested in the car are probably enthusiasts
[279]
Why I don't want to go down the direct selling route myself is
[283]
I don't want to have to deal with strangers
[286]
I don't have to deal with the 10,000 messages that come in when I list it myself
[291]
and then I hope I don't have to deal with no-shows as well
[298]
like, "Bro okay set price" then we go meet
[301]
and then they don't turn up
[304]
A lot of people will say, "Bro offer price"
[307]
why not you view my car first and then you offer a price
[310]
how do you know the condition of the car
[312]
but for consignment like Car Buyers Club will I have to deal with
[316]
No you don't have to I mean consignment dealers that's the beauty of it right
[320]
You can meet the price that you want if you are a direct seller
[323]
or you can agree to a price with the consignment dealer
[326]
the consignment dealer will work towards that price
[329]
you don't have to deal with people, you don't have to deal with the paperwork
[335]
the paperwork is the killer for people I think that's the most daunting thing for most
[338]
That's understandable
[339]
So you mean the consignment dealer will do all the liasing with the people
[343]
Yeah pretty much and for example Car Buyers Club what I really like here is that
[348]
you can drive the car in and then you can chill at the lounge
[352]
instead of sitting in the carpark which usually
[355]
with no aircon
[356]
Yeah with no aircon and this is like you're sitting at a cafe for two hours
[359]
because the idea is that it is a service after all
[364]
if you are technically paying for it,
[366]
the consignment dealer should be organising the meet and all that
[371]
but the thing is it is not really very chill when it comes to consignment usually
[376]
you're sweating in the hot sun, you have to plan something
[379]
and have to wait for 2-3 hours without a car
[381]
and for me I actually do need the car you know
[384]
whereas Car Buyers Club you have the lounge, you can chill
[387]
The lounge here, we'll show you some b-rolls of this place
[401]
but actually what I thought was wouldn't it be easier
[404]
if you just pass the car to the consignment and you know what just sell it
[407]
Yeah you can do it here also, you can leave the car here
[410]
because they have a showroom downstairs and do have used cars also
[414]
so you can leave your car here if you don't actually need it
[418]
it's much easier for people to view your car and it's a very nice showroom so
[423]
the ambience and feeling of buying a car is there
[426]
No but because I prefer, you know how I'm always
[430]
more for direct selling right, I'm more comfortable that way
[433]
so I'm not too sure about the whole consignment dealer thing, correct me if I'm wrong
[437]
Do all of them have showrooms like this?
[440]
No actually a lot of them don't have showrooms they just work
[443]
a lot of them are just offices and they just work around Singapore
[448]
they are always going. around Singapore picking up cars
[451]
and letting prospective buyers view the cars
[456]
Oh so that's why you say you were at like Kallang Mcdonalds
[458]
Yes that's the thing, but there is a convenience to that
[461]
for example let's say I'm at home and the consignment dealer picks up my car
[465]
and settles the viewings and stuff like that
[469]
I think that's really convenient which Car Buyers Club also can do
[472]
Wait let me stop you right there, you're saying that the consignment dealer
[475]
will come to you to pick up your car and then drive to a potential buyer
[480]
Okay so what's the insurance like, I mean he is taking your car
[483]
Yeah so that's the other thing, some consignment dealers don't have trade insurance
[486]
an actual thing when it comes to the car trade
[489]
Yeah yeah
[490]
where the staff of the company can drive the car and be insured
[493]
so Car Buyers Club does have it, I know of a few other consignment dealers
[498]
but not many, not many have trade insurance because
[501]
you know technically anyone can do consignment
[504]
but you don't have that professionalism when it comes to it so when you
[508]
do consignment I guess that's the reason why a lot of people have this
[511]
negative perception of consignment dealers and people who do consignment
[516]
but Car Buyers Club is doing properly I feel
[520]
There's another thing now that you've talked about the whole Car Buyers Club thing
[525]
I'm just wondering I mean
[529]
You said went to Kallang Mcdonalds and all that kind of stuff
[531]
and you had to wait at a cafe and all that kind of stuff
[535]
What is the worst case scenario when you consign your car
[540]
worse case scenario you go there two hours and it's just wasted
[542]
you don't get to sell your car there's always that possibility right
[545]
There's always that possibility of course but it's the same for direct selling
[548]
if you want to get the best value for your car you have to you know
[552]
there's a bit of time and all that but if you have people who are actually working
[557]
to sell your car they have their own network also
[561]
they are going to push your car out
[562]
I guess
[564]
In many ways it is easier, I was like you I used to direct sell my cars
[568]
so much easier and I take all the money
[571]
No because I trust myself you see, I feel like I trust myself
[574]
If someone is doing it properly and they are saying that they have connections
[578]
to do loans for their prospective buyers then it makes my job so much easier
[584]
Let me just clarify this
[587]
If I want to sell my car now and I go to Car Buyers Club and say
[590]
"I want $80,000"
[593]
I pay nothing, and they sell my car, and I get the full $80,000
[597]
If someone actually buys your car at $80,000 which I think someone will
[601]
So how do I settle my loan, my outstanding loan
[604]
Of course Car Buyers Club will be able or rather all consignment agents and dealers
[608]
will have to settle the loan if not they cannot transfer the car you see
[611]
So that is common practice
[613]
So they do the paperwork, I just sit down and enjoy my espresso?
[616]
Yeah, so when you are a direct seller the situation is usually that
[619]
"Okay bro I apply the loan already," and then after
[624]
the cheque is given to you then you transfer the car right?
[627]
Yes
[627]
but because they are a dealer they are able to pay off the car stuff like that
[630]
and then you can take the car
[631]
Right
[633]
because after all they are a dealer it is just that
[635]
how they do things is that they can consign your car
[638]
I'm skeptical man skeptical I mean
[643]
you don't get free service, nothing is free no
[645]
Nothing is free and they do take some commision from that
[650]
I mean the buyer also is charged an admin fee which is standard
[654]
which is a standard thing across yeah but
[657]
that's how it works, in general, consignment the fees are quite low if you ask me
[664]
compared to losing $20,000 off your car when you trade-in
[667]
that's the kind of numbers you are saving
[669]
I lost $20,000?!
[670]
I'm pretty sure you lost $20,000
[671]
You lost $20,000?
[672]
Paper plus one, your car left one year
[675]
It's painful
[682]
I'm sorry man I'm sorry for your loss
[688]
You should've joined sgCarMart before you sold off your car
[695]
i'm genuinely asking because I'm thinking of selling my car
[702]
You know there are good days and bad days
[704]
when you are caught in a jam in a manual car you get frustrated from time to time
[711]
if i wanted t buy a car from Car Buyers Club
[715]
I will have warranty?
[716]
You can buy warranty, there is an option of third party warranty
[720]
which not many people have when it comes to consignment dealers
[724]
Yeah this I haven't heard of
[725]
Yeah because consignment dealers we usually meet at coffee shop
[727]
"Bro you sign here"
[728]
I though they are just the third party middlemen
[732]
this feels like a proper car dealer
[737]
and they are of course they do have used cars on sale
[741]
I can pretty much trust someone who have trade insurance
[745]
and they are moving my car about and they are going to help me sell my car
[749]
So let's just say I want to buy a car from Car Buyers Club
[753]
I found a car price is fine it's perfect
[755]
Can I test drive the car?
[757]
Yeah you can that's the good thing about Car Buyers Club
[759]
as a buyer you can test drive a car because they do have trade insurance
[764]
not many consignment dealers have that
[766]
You were mentioning that
[767]
but of course if I'm a seller and I don't want anyone to test drive my car
[771]
I can say that also
[772]
Then you're not going to sell your car right?
[774]
No the thing is if you want to sell your car the car has to look good right so
[779]
Car Buyers Club actually sort of cleans up your car
[782]
vacuums it, washes it if necessary
[784]
so they can have nice photos of your car, insta-worthy
[790]
It's actually very important you know
[792]
Do they sanitise the car, especially now
[794]
Of course they do sanitise the car
[797]
when they take the car handover from you
[800]
if you never do that you will get in trouble
[803]
you will get fined
[807]
At the same time if your car needs work on it
[810]
let's say you need to repair certain things, touch up certain things
[813]
Car Buyers Club can do it as a seller so that's a good thing
[817]
So you mean they will fix your car for free?
[819]
No who will fix your car for free, if there are issues you should fix your car yourself
[824]
before you sell it right if not the buyer buy a broken car
[827]
that's terrible, that's evil
[831]
You should fix the car and sell it in good condition
[833]
After all you should be driving a car in good condition because it is safer
[837]
Of course
[838]
but the thing is if you are a direct owner
[841]
you have to fix it yourself if you go to a workshop you are charged a customer rate
[846]
but the thing is car dealers are able to get preferential rates from workshops
[850]
because they have so many cars and they are making sure the cars are looking good
[856]
and feeling good and driving good
[859]
so that the next buyer doesn't have to worry about that
[861]
The thing is because they can get preferential rates for that
[864]
you are charged at that preferential rates, you are getting a car fixed at a good price
[869]
so I think that's a good point of having a dealer handle your car for you
[876]
I feel there's really no loss when you go for consignment and the thing is
[883]
you are not charged a fee when you let Car Buyers Club sell the car for you
[891]
they make your car look good, they have preferential rates for detailing also
[895]
so if they park the car here and shoot the photos for you
[900]
it's going to look good
[902]
it's very important your car has to look good in the photos
[906]
Well I think my car looks good I take care of my car
[909]
You think
[911]
This guy tough
[913]
tough love. that's what it is
[916]
A big thank you to Car Buyers Club today for letting us use
[919]
their very beautiful lounge space which they actually use
[924]
for their buyers and sellers to meet and get their car sold
[927]
So if you are planning to sell your car
[930]
do consider Car Buyers Club, they do consignments
[933]
and actually they do take in some cars so
[937]
please give them a visit they will take nice insta-worthy photos of your cars
[941]
so that it has the best chance to get sold at the price that you want
[945]
In the meantime stay safe, be well, ciao!
