Channel: Rich on Money

[0]
you want to know what the best tsp fund is this聽 year with the stock market taking some losses and聽聽
[3]
the concerns of continued inflation it's hard to聽 know what to choose or if what you currently have聽聽
[8]
is right after explaining which fund is poised聽 the most for growth i'll explain why timing the聽聽
[12]
market will lose you money over the long run next聽 i'll explain why picking one strategy and sticking聽聽
[16]
with it for the long term will outperform everyone聽 else you know i'll help you choose the best asset聽聽
[21]
allocation and i'll give you the confidence that聽 it will work this year and every year no matter聽聽
[25]
what's going on in the world okay here's your聽 answer for which fund is best the best fund is聽聽
[29]
the c fund but it's not for the reasons you would聽 expect hear me out on this pandemics stock market聽聽
[35]
housing crashes crazy elections insurrections聽 martian invasions and things we haven't even聽聽
[40]
imagined yet should not matter for choosing the聽 best way to invest in the thrift savings plan the聽聽
[44]
answer is always the same and i'll explain why if聽 you haven't clicked away yet and discussed you're聽聽
[49]
like but rich interest rates are going up and聽 we seem to be at the top of the housing market聽聽
[53]
gas prices are all over the place surely we should聽 make some adjustments so we avoid losing money聽聽
[57]
if stocks go down any further this is a very聽 natural way to think but as i've learned over聽聽
[61]
my adult years of investing it's also a flawed聽 way of thinking this way of thinking is called聽聽
[66]
timing the market it's adjusting your investment聽 strategy because it seems like a change is about聽聽
[70]
to take place you move your money over to safer聽 investments treasuries or bonds to avoid losing聽聽
[74]
money if stocks crash then you put it back into c聽 s and i funds which is s p 500 index small mid cap聽聽
[81]
stocks and international just before the market聽 starts climbing again i can think of two recent聽聽
[85]
examples of where people maybe you tried to do聽 this and lost lots of money one was when trump was聽聽
[90]
elected several people moved their money to cash聽 fearing the stock market would fall nope it went聽聽
[95]
up again second was the kobe pandemic same thing聽 people freaked out and sold their stocks thinking聽聽
[100]
everything would drop it didn't it kept going聽 right on up timing the market will screw you over聽聽
[105]
leave your money alone there are also popular聽 tsp investment websites and strategies that tell聽聽
[110]
you when to buy and sell which funds these are聽 wastes of money and bad ideas and many people聽聽
[115]
believe hiring quote-unquote professional money聽 managers will accelerate their growth i have a聽聽
[120]
very unpopular opinion to tell you that is聽 unfortunately 100 true none of these methods聽聽
[125]
work in the real world people that think jumping聽 in and out of investments at the quote unquote聽聽
[129]
right times will make you more money than just聽 staying in the same investment if you follow聽聽
[134]
any of these market timing strategies which聽 involve predicting or essentially guessing which聽聽
[138]
investments will do well you will lose money聽 compared to what i'm about to share with you聽聽
[142]
simply invest in the c fund which mimics the s聽 p 500 index invest in that and don't make any聽聽
[148]
changes based on any news any experts or any聽 lame reasons you can think of and you'll come聽聽
[153]
out on top suckering people into believing that聽 it's possible to predict the best investment in聽聽
[158]
the short term is a multi-billion dollar industry聽 most of wall street is built on this lie they make聽聽
[164]
you believe that if you pay for their help their聽 expertise their guessing ability you can predict聽聽
[169]
the drops in the market and avoid them as well as聽 predict the jumps in the market and exploit them聽聽
[174]
and the reality is by trying to do this you'll聽 lose more money than the people who simply invest聽聽
[179]
their money for the long term and never touch it a聽 quick story about warren buffett arguably the best聽聽
[183]
investor in the world to illustrate this point聽 how he made a fool of the professional investors聽聽
[187]
and the entire investment manager industry he did聽 this by making a bet a bet that no professional聽聽
[192]
manager or hedge fund could outperform the s p f聽 500 index over a 10-year period this means passive聽聽
[198]
investing which is essentially doing nothing聽 would outperform professionals making trades that聽聽
[202]
they thought were smart for their clients only one聽 person took them up on the back presumably because聽聽
[207]
most money managers are smart enough to know they聽 can't win several years into the bet the s p 500聽聽
[212]
was way ahead of the well-known hedge fund and the聽 hedge fund manager admitted defeat i think the bet聽聽
[217]
was for a cool million for charity a great cause聽 why did warren buffett make this bet another good聽聽
[222]
question why did warren buffet instruct that all聽 his money be put into the s p 500 index when he聽聽
[227]
passes away because he understands a fundamental聽 truth about investing that the so-called experts聽聽
[233]
don't want to know investing in the s p 500 index聽 or really just investing in the stock market in聽聽
[238]
general over the long term vastly outperforms any聽 other method especially professional investors聽聽
[244]
they claim they can manage your money for you聽 for a fee of course no one knows when and how far聽聽
[249]
markets will go up or down it's a fool's errand to聽 try and plenty people will charge you even though聽聽
[254]
they won't outperform the s p 500 index over the聽 long term there are lots of statistics on how the聽聽
[259]
s p 500 index has performed over time but it is聽 widely accepted that it has grown at a compounded聽聽
[265]
rate of approximately seven or nine percent a聽 year on average you only get these results if you聽聽
[270]
invest in it and never move your money around in聽 reaction to any type of news or event no jumping聽聽
[275]
in and out of the market every time a pandemic聽 occurs or someone you don't like is elected as聽聽
[280]
president i keep saying the c fund or the s p聽 500 index is the best asset allocation for this聽聽
[286]
year or really for any year but it's not quite聽 that simple there are several similar variations聽聽
[291]
of this asset allocation that could do slightly聽 better or worse than just investing in the s p 500聽聽
[296]
index all of them will do better than professional聽 managers or timing the market i'm going to give聽聽
[301]
you several investment strategies to choose from聽 that will work long term as long as you stick聽聽
[305]
with them and don't buy and sell when you get聽 scared or when others tell you to do something聽聽
[309]
i have another video up here somewhere that goes聽 over these choices in more detail but i'll whiz聽聽
[314]
through these right now and show you how to invest聽 in them using the funds available in the thrift聽聽
[318]
savings plan or tsp i already covered the s p 500聽 index you can mimic that in your tsp portfolio聽聽
[324]
simply by investing in the c fund easy money i'll聽 go over for the variations that are popular the聽聽
[329]
total stock market index the warren buffett聽 tsp allocation which is a slight tweak on聽聽
[333]
the sap 500 index dave ramsey's tsp investment聽 advice and the most popular strategy by far my聽聽
[339]
personal allocation the rich carry worldwide聽 domination strategy let's knock these out聽聽
[344]
first is the total stock market index strategy聽 this investment choice is a popular one and is聽聽
[348]
the main recommendation of jl collins in his聽 book the simple path to wealth probably the best聽聽
[353]
finance book of all time so far and i'm not just聽 saying that because i was a proofreader on the聽聽
[358]
book instead of just investing in the largest聽 companies that make up the s p 500 you invest聽聽
[363]
in those plus medium and small companies this聽 index encompasses the entire u.s stock market聽聽
[368]
just like the name says it's more diversified聽 than the s p 500 and small caps have been known聽聽
[373]
to slightly outperform large caps over the long聽 term albeit with more risk the s fund in the tsp聽聽
[379]
is an index of small and mid-sized companies not聽 included in the s p 500 index therefore a mix of聽聽
[385]
80 c fund 20 s fund will closely mimic the total聽 stock market index fund next is the warren buffett聽聽
[391]
tsp allocation all i mentioned earlier that the s聽 p 500 index allocation was something recommended聽聽
[396]
by warren buffett he actually has a more specific聽 instruction on how his wealth will be invested for聽聽
[401]
his family once he passes away a slight tweak聽 is necessary he plans to invest it in the s p聽聽
[406]
500 index no surprise but he also plans to have聽 10 bonds the reason for this is that the amount聽聽
[412]
of bonds you add to your investment will lower聽 the volatility in a down market as luck would聽聽
[416]
have it tsp's f fund is made up of bonds you can聽 mimic the strategy for warren buffett's trust with聽聽
[422]
90 c 10 f thanks warren next is dave ramsey's tsp聽 investment advice people seem to love this guy聽聽
[430]
he's absurdly popular he actually has two sets聽 of recommendations his more conservative tsp聽聽
[435]
allocation recommendation is 80 c 10 s 10 i fund聽 and his less conservative is 60 c 20 s 20 i fun聽聽
[444]
thanks dave note the i fund is an international聽 index fund now for what my friends describe as the聽聽
[450]
quote-unquote best investment strategy in the聽 world so far there are literally tens and tens聽聽
[455]
of people who google rich on money tsp allocation聽 every year until now nobody has ever known how one聽聽
[462]
of the most brilliant minds of our time invests聽 in the tsp i like the idea of being a little bit聽聽
[467]
heavier weighted on small and mid-sized companies聽 as opposed to being just all s p 500 index i could聽聽
[472]
accomplish this with the total stock market index聽 but i want even more exposure to small companies聽聽
[477]
not a fan of the tsp's international fund and聽 they haven't been investing in it it doesn't聽聽
[481]
have enough exposure to small and or developing聽 countries so here's what i settled on the rich聽聽
[486]
on money worldwide dominance tsp portfolio is聽 drumroll 50 s 50 c i know i know i should be聽聽
[494]
charging an arm and a leg for this information i聽 just have too much altruism in my heart and nobody聽聽
[499]
watches my videos don't stress about picking the聽 right one of these investment strategies it's聽聽
[503]
probably mine anyway any of these will do better聽 than most people do with professional managers聽聽
[507]
now i'm going to talk about adjusting your tsp聽 portfolio for your age and risk tolerance this is聽聽
[512]
different and safer than jumping in and out of the聽 market i made a separate video about this which is聽聽
[517]
deep in the weeds watch it up here by clicking聽 on that thingy that you see but i'll explain it聽聽
[522]
quickly right now many people invest in 100 stocks聽 when i say stocks i mean either cs or ifund we聽聽
[529]
often don't have any fixed income that's bonds and聽 treasury bills in our portfolio as a hedge against聽聽
[535]
market risk bonds and treasury bills are safe they聽 don't go up or down with the stock market they聽聽
[540]
just have a very small almost guaranteed rate of聽 return kind of like a really good savings account聽聽
[545]
it's wise to put a specific percentage of fixed聽 income f or g fund which is bond or treasury bills聽聽
[552]
into your portfolio of stocks to lower the market聽 risk as you near retirement for the thrift savings聽聽
[557]
plan stocks are the c s and i funds and聽 fixed income are g fund treasuries and f聽聽
[564]
fund bonds here's a quick example of how to use聽 bonds to protect your tsp if you have 50 or half聽聽
[569]
of your portfolio in stocks and the other half in聽 bonds fund in this case when the market suddenly聽聽
[574]
drops thirty percent in one day you'll only聽 drop about half of that fifteen percent because聽聽
[579]
you're only half invested in stocks the bonds you聽 have won't lose value this limits your downside聽聽
[584]
here's the problem if the market shoots up just as聽 much in one day you only go up half of that or 15聽聽
[590]
because you're only half invested in stocks it's聽 a double-edged sword lose less than down markets聽聽
[595]
but make less than up markets here is some simple聽 guidance for achieving the right balance of stocks聽聽
[600]
and bonds for your age i use the law of 120 when聽 it comes to the percentage of your portfolio that聽聽
[605]
should be in stocks you subtract your age from聽 120. a 40 year old will be 120 minus 40 equals聽聽
[611]
80 of stocks so you need 20 bonds which means 20聽 percent of fund some people use the law of 100聽聽
[618]
instead of 120. it's much more conservative聽 or safer you can adjust this number based on聽聽
[622]
how risk-averse you are here's some questions聽 you could ask yourself and decide between 100聽聽
[627]
more conservative or 120 less conservative do i聽 have a higher or lower risk tolerance than other聽聽
[632]
investors in my age group is this my only source聽 of income or do i have things like a retirement聽聽
[638]
a pension or a sugar mama i'm currently looking聽 for a sugar mama by the way this is rich on money聽聽
[642]
here's a spot to subscribe to me here's two聽 other videos youtube thinks you should watch聽聽
