Amazon Tesla Stock Splits (How To Trade) - YouTube

Channel: Humbled Trader

[0]
we can either talk about stock splits
[2]
infractions and math or we can talk
[5]
about them in pizza your pick
[14]
so you've probably heard that tech
[16]
giants like amazon and google are having
[19]
a split
[21]
no not that kind of split nor this kind
[24]
they are having a stock split a stock
[27]
split what's that
[29]
in this video we'll be discussing what
[31]
is a stock split and we'll do that while
[34]
we eat some delicious pizzas together
[38]
we'll also talk about how a stock split
[40]
affects some familiar stocks such as
[43]
tesla apple and pretty soon google and
[47]
amazon and of course how can we the
[50]
retail investors and traders take
[52]
advantage of this opportunity and make
[56]
some money in the stock market so if you
[59]
want to learn about all these different
[61]
kinds of splits in this video and eat
[64]
some pizza then remember to drop a like
[68]
at the bottom of the video so what is a
[70]
stock split you ask the fancy way of
[73]
saying it is that a stock split is when
[76]
a company increases the number of shares
[78]
available and as a result lowers the
[81]
price of the stock
[84]
or visually speaking a not so fancy way
[88]
of explaining it is that a company takes
[90]
their stock and cuts it into smaller
[93]
pieces this is an event that has to be
[96]
voted and agreed upon by the publicly
[99]
traded company usually the ceo or the
[102]
cfo proposes that the company stock be
[106]
cut into smaller pieces and that's
[108]
called a stock split ratio then the
[111]
company's board of directors have to
[114]
vote on the decision recent examples of
[116]
this are tesla's 5-1 split back in 2020
[121]
and now amazon and google with their
[124]
announcement to split shares 24 41 in
[128]
february and march this decision is
[131]
often made when the stock price has
[133]
increased substantially as you can see
[136]
from this amazon stock chart amazon was
[139]
once trading at around 15
[142]
after the dot-com bubble more than 20
[145]
years ago since then the company has
[147]
grown tremendously under the jeff bezos
[150]
leadership online shopping becomes more
[153]
popular and amazon banks billions of
[156]
dollars of revenue per year as they
[159]
swallow up market shares in other
[161]
industries such as groceries physical
[164]
bookstores consumer stables pharmacy and
[167]
alexa listening to our most intimate
[170]
secrets at home
[172]
yes basically amazon is slowly taking
[175]
over the entire world the stock price
[178]
took off like a rocket from double
[180]
digits to triple then broke through
[183]
thousands in the last couple of years to
[185]
a high of thirty seven hundred dollars
[188]
and you can see it's a similar scenario
[190]
for stocks at google all these share
[193]
prices have gone up exponentially and
[196]
are seemingly too expensive now if we
[199]
take a look at apple share prices
[201]
without the previous four stock splits
[204]
the stock will be at eighteen hundred
[206]
dollars today as for tesla it will be
[209]
around four thousand dollars and i
[212]
remember when we all thought 420 was
[215]
going to be the peak on this monster so
[217]
basically expensive companies like
[220]
amazon want to split their stock as much
[224]
as possible because that means everyone
[226]
becomes insanely rich overnight and they
[230]
deliver lambo to your door the next day
[233]
right
[234]
well not exactly
[236]
in fact when a company splits a stock
[239]
technically
[240]
nothing happens
[243]
and that's because of this thing in math
[245]
called fractions okay i don't think i'm
[248]
the best math teacher here believe it or
[251]
not not all asians are good at math i
[254]
guess it's not bad because all i have to
[256]
tell you is that to find the least
[258]
common denominator after you convert all
[260]
integers and mixed numbers into
[262]
fractions then find the lowest common
[264]
multiple of the denominators before you
[266]
can blah blah blah blah blah
[268]
boring let me introduce you to our
[270]
special segment for this video cooking
[273]
with shea
[275]
and by cooking i mean just taking a
[278]
frozen pizza out of the freezer throwing
[280]
it into a toaster oven and hope for the
[283]
best that's the only kind of cooking i
[285]
can do without setting the kitchen on
[288]
fire and if you haven't hit the like
[290]
button yet please remember to drop a
[293]
like at the bottom of this video i'm
[295]
literally risking setting my kitchen on
[298]
fire for your learning and entertainment
[301]
i promise i'll share this piece of pizza
[304]
with you by the way this is my favorite
[307]
frozen pizza from walmart not sponsored
[310]
its thin crust is really good three
[312]
dollars and fifty cents canadian for
[315]
each box check them out bar store sports
[318]
will give them a 15 out of ten okay yes
[321]
we're still talking about stock splits
[323]
here so bear with me i made this pizza
[327]
because you hate fractions and we love
[329]
pizza so win win now if i cut this pizza
[333]
in two for you do you magically have two
[336]
pizzas
[337]
of course not i wish then we could have
[340]
eaten this for breakfast lunch and
[342]
dinner you still have one whole pizza
[345]
just into two halves in a stock market
[348]
we would call this two for one split and
[352]
if i cut this into four pieces that
[354]
would be called four four one split and
[357]
finally if i attempt to do it like
[360]
amazon trying to cut this pizza into 20
[364]
pieces
[365]
then we would have a 24 1 splits here
[369]
and i guess i'm not eating lunch anymore
[372]
in all these scenarios you and i did not
[375]
get any more pizza it's just that the
[378]
pizza is cut into smaller slices think
[381]
of this as if you own a portion of the
[383]
pizza pie the company is simply
[386]
splitting your portion into smaller
[388]
slices but your percentage ownership
[391]
remains the same so ladies and gentlemen
[394]
boys and girls this is exactly what
[397]
happens with a stock split you get to
[400]
eat pizza i mean you still have the same
[403]
amount of ownership but in a higher
[405]
number of pieces but just in smaller
[408]
slices now that you understand what
[410]
stock split is and know what my favorite
[413]
cheap frozen pizza is the next thing you
[416]
should know is that there are two common
[419]
types of stock splits first is a split
[422]
that is insanely sweet and delicious
[425]
second is the splits i'm still working
[427]
on and could get quite painful okay just
[430]
kidding no one asked for that the first
[433]
type of stock split is a regular stock
[435]
split which is often referred to as
[438]
forward stock split the second type is a
[442]
reverse split the second type of split
[445]
is less common and we usually only see
[448]
these in small cap or micro crap micro
[451]
cap companies it's called a reverse
[454]
split because instead of cutting a pizza
[456]
into smaller pieces now the pieces are
[459]
actually bigger the number of pieces
[462]
become less but the investors ownership
[465]
remain the same this is something we see
[467]
in many low float penny stocks with
[470]
terrible fundamentals let's come back to
[472]
the more common stock splits now forward
[475]
split forward split is the most common
[478]
kind we see on expensive stocks like
[481]
tesla apple amazon or google for example
[485]
a 24 1 split like what amazon is doing
[489]
means the company is splitting the
[491]
current number of outstanding shares
[493]
into 20 pieces so the amount of
[496]
outstanding shares for amazon would
[499]
increase from 500 million to 10 billion
[502]
and if amazon is trading at 2500 dollars
[505]
at close on the day before the scheduled
[508]
stock split then the new price the next
[511]
day will be 2500 divided by 20 equals
[516]
125 dollars remember the pizza
[519]
demonstration earlier you better
[521]
remember because i almost set the house
[523]
on fire a stock split does not affect
[526]
the valuation or anything else
[529]
fundamental about the company at all it
[532]
simply decreases the price of the stock
[535]
making it cheaper and more accessible
[537]
for investors and increasing the total
[540]
outstanding shares at this point you
[542]
must be wondering okay if a forward
[545]
stock splits really doesn't do anything
[547]
to a company's valuation then what's the
[550]
point why is wall street and all the
[553]
stock market investors so hyped up about
[556]
this 20 to 1 split that amazon and
[559]
google are doing in the summer well
[562]
there are definitely some advantages and
[565]
opportunities for us investors and
[568]
traders to profit first is simply the
[571]
perceived discount in the stock price
[574]
after the 24 1 splits the amazon or
[577]
google would do this summer the stock
[579]
prices will go down from around 2500 to
[583]
125. of course i'll depend on the actual
[586]
stock price this summer remember not
[589]
every investor could afford to buy one
[592]
whole share of amazon or google at 2500
[596]
therefore the company's intention is to
[598]
make the stock more accessible to a
[601]
larger number of retail investors
[603]
because of the lowered price and
[606]
hopefully the stock value will
[608]
eventually increase as well due to the
[611]
new pool of investments drawn to the
[614]
company the second advantage of a
[616]
forward stock split is the boost in
[618]
liquidity remember we said that the
[621]
stock splits increase the number of
[623]
shares but decrease the share price by
[626]
having higher number of shares it also
[628]
becomes easier for existing shareholders
[632]
to purchase even more stock the third
[635]
advantage of a stock split is really a
[637]
result of the previous two many times we
[641]
do see the stock split leading to an
[643]
increase in higher share prices
[646]
overall and an increase in companies
[649]
valuation yes while i did say stock
[652]
splits does not directly increase the
[655]
company's value it does sometimes cost
[658]
the stock price to run
[660]
because of the influx of new buyers
[662]
causing the price to increase as more
[665]
people purchase the stock and invest
[667]
money into the company looking at the
[670]
tesla stock chart here you can see the
[672]
stock moved up starting from the date of
[675]
the stock split announcements on august
[678]
11 2020 leading to the actual date the
[682]
five to one stock split took effect on
[686]
august 31st the stock had almost
[689]
increased by 70 percent short term
[692]
during that two to three week time frame
[695]
and long term the stock had continued
[698]
rallying higher to all-time highs around
[701]
october 2021. you can see it's a similar
[705]
price action on apple stock as well
[708]
following their previous five stock
[710]
splits with the most recent one in
[712]
august of 2020. so how do we traders and
[716]
investors can profit from these stock
[719]
splits like we mentioned in the short
[721]
term these stock split events could
[724]
actually be good swing trade candidate
[727]
as we've seen stocks rally into the
[729]
forward split event in 2020 however that
[733]
would only be viable in an extremely
[736]
strong bull market in 2020 and 2021 i
[740]
actually participated in a tesla stock
[742]
split swing trade two years ago and in a
[746]
current on certain market environment in
[748]
march 2022 i would refrain from doing
[752]
the same long swing trade again however
[755]
speaking as an investor now companies
[758]
that issue forward stock splits are
[760]
generally a sign that the business is
[762]
doing well especially when the company
[765]
pairs this news with additional share
[768]
buybacks like what amazon and google are
[771]
doing so if you've been considering
[773]
investing in these tech giants after a
[776]
stock split can be a good time to do so
[780]
because again you could now potentially
[782]
own a whole share of this stock at
[785]
lowered prices i'm actually a google
[788]
stock shareholder myself and with this
[791]
recent announcement i'm actually even
[793]
more bullish on the future growth of
[795]
this company and i'm actually really
[798]
excited to be adding this investment
[801]
during the recent 2022 correction i
[804]
won't be day trading or swing trading
[807]
these stocks i intend on holding this
[809]
investment for the long term growth so
[812]
hopefully you guys learned a thing or
[814]
two about stock splits and its effect on
[817]
the company's share prices for me i
[820]
really did enjoy this delicious 3.50
[824]
