Aliza Gulab: When traveling, you're more than likely
[5]
to try delicious, authentic food
[7]
found in the country that you're in,
[9]
not fast-food chains.
[11]
I mean, who travels across the country to try...
[14]
McDonald's?
[16]
But McDonald's is the second-biggest fast-food chain
[19]
in the world, and it's all over.
[21]
Its menu items actually differ depending on where you are,
[25]
like the McFalafel in Sweden
[27]
or the McSpicy Paneer in India.
[29]
Let's take a look at what McDonald's menu items
[31]
look like around the world.
[40]
You can get a really good kick of heat
[41]
with Thailand's Kaprao Crispy Chicken Rice.
[44]
It's rice served with chicken curry.
[47]
Customer: It's actually really good.
[48]
It's, like, sweet and spicy,
[51]
but honestly you wouldn't think it came from McDonald's.
[54]
Aliza: And for dessert, try its Thai pie.
[57]
It's stuffed with black sticky rice and young coconut
[60]
that oozes when you bite into it.
[68]
Canada's poutine is a can't-miss.
[70]
It's fries topped with cheese curds and gravy.
[74]
It first appeared in Quebec in the 1950s,
[76]
and you can try it at some Canadian McDonald's.
[83]
While the Big Mac may be one of McDonald's
[85]
most popular beef burgers,
[88]
that's not the case in India.
[90]
About 95% of the world's Hindus live in India.
[94]
Cows are sacred in Hinduism,
[95]
so practicing Hindus don't eat them.
[98]
As a substitution, the Maharaja Mac
[101]
uses chicken and adds heat with jalape帽os.
[104]
It's also estimated that anywhere between 20% to 30%
[107]
of India's population is vegetarian.
[110]
More than any other country.
[112]
And many people that do eat meat
[113]
don't eat it often.
[116]
The McSpicy Paneer and McAloo Tikki
[119]
are two vegetarian sandwich options in India.
[123]
The McSpicy Paneer is fried cheese with lettuce
[126]
and spicy sauce.
[127]
Paneer is the common cheese used throughout the
[129]
Indian subcontinent.
[131]
The McAloo Tikki is a fried potato and pea patty
[135]
with veg sauce, ketchup, tomato, and onion.
[141]
Like India, many Swedes enjoy the vegetarian lifestyle.
[146]
Sweden's McDonald's offers items such as McFalafel
[149]
with four or nine pieces of falafel bites.
[154]
It also sells the McVegan, a soy vegan burger.
[158]
One of our producers, Ju, tried it herself.
[160]
Here's what she thought.
[163]
Ju: It's mixed with tomato powder, onions, and peppers,
[167]
so, like, what you're expecting from here
[169]
is quite, like, a juicy soy-protein burger,
[173]
but with quite a strong, like,
[174]
vegetable taste to it as well.
[177]
It's not really, really flavorsome.
[180]
It just tastes like quite a good, standard
[183]
veggie burger, like, made of soy protein.
[185]
It certainly looks very, very impressive.
[187]
Like, I really like the color of it.
[191]
In Hong Kong, the company created
[193]
the first McDonald's Next,
[195]
a sophisticated and modern version of the restaurant
[198]
with an open kitchen,
[199]
hand-washing tables, and silverware.
[202]
At this McDonald's,
[203]
you can get gourmet burgers,
[205]
rich desserts, and matcha drinks,
[207]
like this soy milk matcha latte and Shake Shake fries,
[210]
which are also available in other Asian countries.
[219]
Taiwan has an extensive breakfast menu,
[221]
and a lot of its breakfast sandwiches are made with toast,
[225]
like this one, with pork, cheese, and cabbage.
[229]
You can also get items like corn soup,
[232]
and just like Shake Shake fries,
[234]
some countries in Asia have Shake Shake Chicken, too.
[242]
Switzerland's McDonald's offers a Quinoa Curry Burger.
[245]
It's a quinoa veggie patty topped with lettuce,
[247]
tomato, garlic, and curry sauce between a ciabatta bun.
[251]
If you're familiar with American McDonald's,
[253]
you know that there's only two flavors of McFlurries:
[257]
Oreo and M&M.
[259]
But Switzerland has Toblerone McFlurries.
[262]
The country is known for great chocolate,
[263]
and Toblerone was invented there,
[265]
so it's only fair that they made
[267]
their own version of a McFlurry.
[269]
Our producer Graham tasted it.
[271]
Graham: That's amazing. That's so rich and creamy
[273]
and sweet. That's delicious.
[275]
I mean, it tasted kind of like a chocolate milkshake.
[277]
Very good.
[278]
I love that. I love that.
[283]
Saimin is common cuisine in Hawaii.
[286]
The traditional noodle dish can be found at
[288]
Hawaii's McDonald's.
[289]
It serves the noodles in a broth
[291]
with char siu,
[292]
fish cake, nori, and egg.
[296]
Spam is also a huge part of Hawaiian culture,
[299]
and McDonald's offers a breakfast platter with Spam,
[301]
Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice.
[305]
Pair it with a taro pie,
[307]
made with the tropical root vegetable taro.
[314]
South Africa's menu has a Boerie Burger.
[317]
You can get it with one or two patties,
[319]
and it's served with ketchup, mustard,
[320]
and grilled onions.
[322]
Boerie is special to South Africa.
[325]
It is short for boerewors, which translates to
[327]
"farmer's sausage" in Afrikaans.
[332]
Meat pies have been a staple in New Zealand
[335]
since early British settlement
[336]
and can be found anywhere, from bakeries to gas stations
[339]
and even in the country's McDonald's.
[342]
The Georgie Pie is a square-shaped pastry
[345]
filed with ground beef and cheese.
[350]
Japan has a pretty extensive menu of burgers,
[353]
and among them is the Teriyaki Burger,
[355]
a beef patty with lettuce and teriyaki sauce.
[359]
It also has an Ebi Filet-O,
[361]
a breaded shrimp patty.
[363]
And if you're thirsty,
[364]
try the Melon McFloat.
[365]
It's Fanta soda with vanilla soft serve.
[372]
A lot of McDonald's make you pay extra for condiments,
[374]
especially their dipping sauces,
[376]
but in Mexico, they do it a little differently.
[379]
Instead, it has a complimentary salsa bar.
[382]
Use it on the special breakfast platter.
[384]
It comes with sausage, scrambled eggs,
[387]
and McMolletes, bread that comes with
[389]
refried beans, white American cheese, and salsa.
[393]
In Mexico's McDonald's, you can also try a pay de queso.
[397]
It's a classic handheld pie crust
[399]
filled with a sweet cream cheese.
[404]
Rice is a staple food in Indonesia.
[407]
The country produces over 60 million tons per year.
[411]
Its McDonald's offers sticky-rice balls
[413]
served with fried chicken, spices,
[415]
and chili sauce.
[419]
Wash it down with black currant fruit tea,
[421]
which comes in this fun purple juice pouch.
[427]
McDonald's in the United Kingdom
[429]
might be the best place to stop
[431]
if you'd like to try food from around the world.
[434]
Yep, its limited-edition menu
[435]
offers items like the Indian Chicken
[438]
and the Canadian Stack.
[441]
Ju: Got some chicken in there,
[442]
lettuce, tomato, onions,
[444]
and, of course, the naan on the outside.
[448]
If you like garlic and you like chutney,
[451]
you will love this.
[453]
Ooh. OK, crispy onions and bacon and sauce
[457]
and lettuce and two burger patties. That's it.
[460]
Aliza: You can also just stick to classic UK flavors
[463]
and get a traditional bacon roll.
[464]
It's bacon served on a roll
[466]
with ketchup or brown sauce.
[470]
Ju: The bacon in there is actually quite good.
[473]
Aliza: So tell us,
[474]
would you consider eating at a McDonald's while traveling?
[477]
Is it an experience to add to your bucket list?
