15 Wall Street Trading Floor Words Explained! - YouTube

Channel: UpDive

[0]
in this video i'm going to teach you 15
[2]
wall street terms used by traders
[4]
like bagel land chunky or fog and no
[7]
i wasn't swearing but it's the
[8]
abbreviation f-o-k
[10]
i'm not talking about 15 of these terms
[12]
in this video so you can easily sound
[15]
smart the next time you talk with
[16]
someone working in finance
[18]
[Music]
[21]
welcome back to the channel guys i'm
[23]
jason and the first word
[24]
on our list is puke and it's not really
[26]
wall street traders are actually puking
[29]
or vomiting
[30]
on the trading floor but i suppose that
[31]
could still happen so puke means where
[33]
the trader needs to sell a position
[35]
at a loss especially if he or she thinks
[37]
that it will lose
[38]
even more money carry on from this there
[41]
is something called a puke point for
[42]
every trader so which is a threshold of
[44]
pain
[45]
that makes a trader want to sell or have
[47]
to sell so it's different for every
[49]
trader because the threshold or pain
[51]
and confidence level of each trader is
[53]
really different so even for the same
[54]
stock a trader a
[55]
could have a pure point of 10 and
[57]
another trader b could have a few point
[59]
of nine dollars and savvy investors like
[61]
hedge funds you know they try to take
[63]
advantage of this
[64]
if they know the puke point of the
[65]
person that they're trading with
[67]
because usually that's emotional driven
[69]
selling and that's not very good for the
[70]
seller but great for the buyer
[72]
coming in at number two slippage and you
[74]
should pay attention to this because
[75]
this affects you as well so not just
[77]
these traders
[78]
so this happens when trades are done at
[80]
an unexpected price whether you buy
[82]
or sell but it costs you money so let's
[84]
say you're monitoring a stock
[86]
that you really really want to buy and
[87]
finally it's at ten dollars it's the
[89]
price that you've been waiting for and
[90]
you
[91]
input an order to buy just one share of
[93]
this stock at ten dollars but however
[95]
your buy order gets filled at ten
[97]
dollars and ten cents
[98]
so that is the extra 10 cents in
[100]
slippage because it's costing you more
[102]
money now similarly if you are trying to
[104]
sell a 10
[105]
stock and the order is filled at 9.99
[108]
that one cent is slippage because you
[110]
sold it for less i know i know the
[112]
numbers sound quite small but if you
[113]
multiply
[114]
slippage by a million shares that
[116]
slippage really starts to add up to real
[118]
money because a million shares being
[119]
traded each losing 10 cents
[121]
is equal to a hundred thousand dollars
[123]
traders and portfolio managers they
[125]
really care about these things they want
[127]
to avoid slippage and there's three
[128]
things for you to keep in mind so the
[130]
first thing is
[131]
slippage is more common in thinly traded
[133]
stocks and securities so
[134]
stocks that no one really buys or sells
[136]
the volume is very low the second thing
[138]
is slippage is
[139]
more common around significant news
[141]
events so like trading in meme stock
[143]
that slippage
[143]
is huge now lastly to completely avoid
[146]
snippet you should use limit orders
[148]
instead of market orders so unless you
[150]
absolutely want to buy or sell
[152]
a position use a market order but
[154]
otherwise limit orders make
[156]
the most sense if you want to avoid
[157]
slippage coming in at number three
[159]
the iceberg order so this is one of the
[161]
many tricks that traders will do and the
[163]
intention is to hide
[165]
a big buying or selling order cutting a
[167]
big order into many
[169]
smaller pieces of trading orders so they
[170]
can trade with stealth like a quiet
[172]
ninja and not affect the price so if a
[174]
trader wants to sell a hundred thousand
[176]
shares they may chop it up and sell two
[178]
thousand here
[178]
five thousand here ten thousand here so
[180]
now you can see why it's called an
[182]
iceberg because
[183]
literally they just want everyone else
[184]
to see that top bit
[186]
but it's at the bottom mass the big lot
[188]
of shares that makes it an iceberg so
[190]
this is actually very common it also
[192]
helps the trader
[192]
actually get a better average executed
[195]
price than just
[196]
dumping all the shares on the market at
[198]
once number four
[199]
spoofing now it kind of sounds like a
[201]
ghost right
[202]
so this is when traders put up orders
[204]
then immediately cancel them
[206]
to spoof them to fake activity and make
[208]
others think there's a lot of trading
[210]
interest and it happens in two ways if a
[212]
trader wants to
[213]
fake excitement they create fake bid
[216]
prices and so they can submit buy orders
[218]
and cancel them before it's executed the
[220]
second way is if the trader wants to
[221]
fake
[222]
pessimism they create fake asking price
[225]
or sell dollars and then again cancel
[227]
them before it gets executed it's market
[229]
manipulation
[230]
it's illegal so don't do it oh by the
[232]
way this wall street language wall
[234]
street jargon is something that you're
[235]
interested in so let me know in the
[236]
comments below
[237]
one is you're interested you want to
[239]
hear more two nah
[240]
not really you've heard enough number
[242]
five it's time for popcorn so popcorn is
[244]
a real trader language it is usually
[246]
sent to each other in messaging
[248]
terminals and this one's easy for you
[249]
now when do we mostly eat popcorn when
[251]
we watch a movie right so this is what
[253]
traders would say
[254]
when they sit back and start to watch
[256]
another trader start to make his or her
[258]
move
[258]
and the person saying it popcorn anyone
[260]
is watching a movie the one being the
[262]
observer being on the sideline
[264]
time for you to get some popcorn as well
[265]
because we're just at number six there's
[266]
nine more to go bagel land so what
[268]
number does this
[270]
a bagel look like a zero right so this
[272]
probably originally
[273]
started in new york although i'm not too
[275]
sure but just because new york bagels
[277]
are so famous so
[278]
traders would say this like abc stock is
[280]
going to bagel land meaning this stock
[282]
is going to zero i suppose they could
[284]
have also said
[284]
abc stock is going to doughnut land why
[287]
bagel land
[288]
up next we have chunky now traders can
[291]
say wow this stock is trading pretty
[293]
chunky now that means the stock or the
[295]
security is seeing an
[296]
unusual level of block trading activity
[298]
block trading is referred to many times
[300]
in a tv series billions you need a
[302]
little bit more insight about block
[304]
trading you can check out my video here
[306]
next up in number 8 we have dead cat
[308]
bounce
[309]
it's used to describe when it's a bear
[311]
market and big
[312]
down markets when asset prices are
[314]
dropping and suddenly prices shoot up
[316]
and the trader would think at this
[317]
moment this is the kind of head fake in
[319]
boxing because prices don't go up as
[321]
much and then they start to fall again
[322]
so what do
[323]
dead cats bounce sound like i need to
[325]
find a cat and try
[328]
i actually have a bonus for you after
[330]
the 15th one on the list so
[331]
if you want to know keep watching and
[333]
this is number nine on our list
[335]
to get hit or get lift so you probably
[338]
don't quite get what i mean
[339]
because that's really trader language so
[341]
here's the truth traders working on wall
[343]
street they don't talk like
[345]
i just bought a bond no they say things
[347]
like i got hit at 98
[349]
or i lifted him at 100. it sounds weird
[351]
at first but let me explain
[353]
so when a trader says i got hit in 98
[355]
the 98
[356]
is like a bond price a bond price
[357]
reference and hit means to buy
[359]
so try to imagine this somebody threw
[361]
their assets or bonds
[363]
at the trader and made them pay for 98
[365]
so the trader bought it and 98 they got
[367]
hit at 98. so one step further so if you
[370]
think about
[371]
setting limit orders like let's say you
[373]
want to buy one share of tesla at 600
[375]
then when the order indeed gets executed
[378]
and then next time you can say to your
[379]
friends
[380]
you got hit at 600. and got lifted at
[382]
100 it means
[383]
selling at 100. so it's almost like the
[385]
assets or bonds
[387]
that weight gets removed from your
[388]
shoulders you're now lighter you're free
[390]
of it
[391]
you're lifting so a quick recap hit is
[393]
to buy let's say someone throws the
[395]
asset at you you get hit
[396]
you pay them cash and lyft is to sell so
[399]
someone removes the weight of the asset
[401]
takes the asset away from you
[403]
and you get cash next up number 10 one
[405]
of my favorite
[406]
fill or kill literally f-o-k
[409]
so this is a special type of trade order
[411]
and that means the trade must be
[413]
completely 100 executed otherwise
[416]
it must be cancelled so to fill the
[417]
order or kill the order
[419]
so sometimes people also say o or
[421]
non-order a-o-n
[423]
it's the same but i think fox sounds way
[425]
better and if you're new here and still
[427]
haven't subscribed
[428]
man i'm not swearing i'm just
[430]
saying feel or kill the subscribe button
[432]
now
[433]
number 11 after let's talk wake me
[436]
up so traders usually hear this request
[439]
from their customers so this is
[440]
literally when a customer wants a trader
[442]
to let them know when a stock
[444]
or bond or an asset is trading at some
[446]
particular level so someone could say to
[448]
the trader you know why don't you wake
[449]
me up at 1 20. i think i have more to do
[451]
that now we're at number 12
[453]
pass the book so this really isn't wall
[456]
street language or jargon that they
[458]
say but it's rather what they actually
[460]
do and everyone really understands it
[462]
especially nowadays there are trade
[463]
desks
[464]
all over the world they're trading
[465]
commodities bonds futures stocks
[467]
in the same company but in different
[469]
time zones so trade desks in hong kong
[471]
when they finish the day
[472]
passes the book to those in london to
[474]
take care of the trading book then later
[476]
on passes the book to
[478]
new york and so on so passing the book
[480]
is literally
[481]
different trading desks taking over that
[483]
trading responsibility we're at number
[484]
13. now here's the funny one
[486]
missed the stock it's not really like
[488]
falling in love with the stock
[490]
and not seeing the stock ticker and
[491]
suddenly for a few seconds you feel that
[493]
you really miss
[494]
seeing the stock no no no that's not
[495]
what it means what this means is it's
[497]
usually because of very unfortunate
[500]
timing so let's say there's a customer
[502]
who wanted to buy tesla at 600
[504]
today and a stock was indeed six hundred
[506]
dollars but the
[507]
instant the customer relayed that order
[509]
to the trader the stock went to
[511]
605 610 620 and never looked back
[516]
then the customer could say to the
[517]
trader so you missed all that stuff
[519]
traded at 600
[520]
yikes that trade is not gonna have a
[522]
good day and number fourteen
[523]
gunning a stock so gunning a stock means
[525]
a trader
[526]
is aggressively and somewhat
[528]
unprofessionally
[530]
moving the price of the stock buying or
[531]
selling aggressively of the stock so a
[533]
trader could say
[534]
this stock really is moving man i can
[537]
see that someone's really
[538]
gunning the stock so the last one on the
[540]
list on trader lingo we're talking about
[542]
if it fits
[543]
or if you care so these two mean exactly
[546]
the same thing and it's usually used at
[547]
the end of a sentence and it's when
[549]
traders try to fish
[550]
interest from other traders they can say
[553]
i'll offer you a 98 400 000
[555]
if you care well i'll pay you 25 for 200
[558]
000
[559]
if it fits so the person that's saying
[561]
this doesn't really need a commitment
[562]
just fishing interest
[564]
[Music]
[566]
now here comes the bonus now but the
[568]
truth is i actually miscounted
[571]
let's talk about the term you money so
[574]
all traders know this term
[575]
but it's really not limited to just wall
[577]
street everyone probably understands
[579]
this
[579]
and it's like a puking point everyone
[581]
has a different level of fu money it's a
[584]
different for every trader it's
[585]
different for every person and it's a
[586]
matter of money that
[587]
one day one day and i hope you can do
[590]
this too
[591]
allows anyone to own back their own time
[594]
choices and life because you have
[595]
enough money to do what you want
[597]
whenever wherever
[599]
like always thanks for watching
