What is a 403b? - YouTube

[3]
Hey teachers! I want to talk to you about聽
saving for retirement, but before I do聽聽
[8]
I want to first thank you for what you do.聽
I personally know how difficult teaching can聽聽
[13]
be. The kids are great, but the work can聽
be exhausting. There's morning bus duty,聽聽
[19]
15-minute lunches, and large class sizes. But聽
there are perks, and I'm not just talking about聽聽
[25]
July and August. One of those perks is that聽
you have access to something called a 403(b).聽聽
[31]
What's that? It's a retirement plan available聽
to teachers and other school employees. It's聽聽
[37]
similar to the 401k and it can be a game changer聽
in terms of how much you save for retirement.聽聽
[43]
Let me explain. Most teachers have a pension, but聽
will that be enough for a comfortable retirement?聽聽
[49]
Here's why it might not be. Few pensions聽
pay out 100% of your last year's salary.聽聽
[56]
Many teachers are career switchers and haven't had聽
time to build up sufficient pension credit, plus聽聽
[63]
medical costs and retirement can be significant.聽
That's where the 403(b) comes in. Here are a few聽聽
[69]
key points you need to know. You can contribute up聽
to $19,500 a year. If you are age fifty or older,聽聽
[77]
you can contribute an additional $6,500 a聽
year and you can contribute on a pre-tax or聽聽
[86]
after-tax basis. Sounds great, right? The problem聽
is that most 403(b) plans stink. What do I mean?聽聽
[96]
Costs. Most 403(b) investments cost too much.聽
This is because most of the investment choices聽聽
[103]
are through insurance companies who use聽
high-commissioned sales people to sell聽聽
[108]
high-cost products. Ever walk into your staff聽
lounge to find a "financial professional"聽聽
[114]
has provided sandwiches or pizza for lunch? How聽
nice, right? You probably feel obligated to buy聽聽
[120]
his or her 403(b) product. Don't do it. That will聽
be the most expensive lunch you ever buy. Signing聽聽
[128]
up with the wrong provider could cost you hundreds聽
of thousands of dollars. Look what happens to聽聽
[133]
three teachers who invest the same amount over the聽
same period of time and receive the same annual聽聽
[139]
return. Teacher 1's 403(b) is now worth $185,391聽
dollars. Teacher 2's 403(b) is now worth $241,537.聽聽
[148]
Teacher 3's 403(b) is now worth $343,474. Why聽
such a difference? Costs. Teacher 1 committed聽聽
[169]
to a plan that charges 3% in fees. Teacher 2 pays聽
1.74% in fees and teacher 3 pays 0.07% in fees.聽聽
[183]
Doesn't take a math teacher to realize that it聽
is much better to pay 0.07% in fees. In fact,聽聽
[191]
it's more than $158,000 better and that'll buy聽
a lot of sandwiches. Get wise to the 403(b) at聽聽

active community of classroom teachers fighting to聽
improve the K-12 403(b). My name is Dan Otter and聽聽

I'm a former elementary and middle school teacher.聽
I started 403bwise because I was tired of seeing聽聽
[222]
my colleagues getting ripped off by sales agents.聽
The K-12 403(b) is broken. Together we can fix it.
