Welcome, guys.
Now, if you are a sports fan,
[20]
you already know
that Jerry Buss
[22]
<i> and Magic Johnson
will redefine sports
and entertainment.</i>
[25]
But when we meet them,
[26]
they're starting out
as underdogs with a vision.
[28]
In the beginning, Adam, Max,
[30]
how did you think
about finding a Magic?
[33]
It was one of the hardest
casting tasks
[37]
I've ever encountered.
[38]
And in looking for Magic,
we realized like,
[41]
he has a smile like no one.
[43]
He has a charisma, a sparkle,
a talent like no one.
[47]
I had a moment where
I was like, "I don't know
if we can do this."
[50]
And then we got a tape
from Torrance, California...
[55]
-(CHUCKLES)
-I remember, Francine,
[56]
our casting director
just saying,
[58]
<i> "Take a look at this guy."</i>
[59]
<i>It was like the hair on the back
of my neck stood up</i>
[62]
<i> and we kinda looked
at each other</i>
[63]
and it was like,
"That's the guy."
[65]
This guy walked in
and nailed the audition.
[69]
Rick was part
of this casting process too.
[71]
Because once we knew
that Quincy could act,
[73]
and could kill it,
the question was,
[75]
<i> "Can he play basketball
believably?"</i>
[77]
<i>And we had Rick kind of put you
through the wringer.</i>
[80]
-Do you remember that day?
-Oh, a hundred percent.
[82]
You know I tried
to make you throw up?
[83]
-I did not know that.
-RICK FOX:
You did not know that?
[86]
I'm pretty sure we got
close though.
[87]
In the case of finding
a Magic,
[89]
the level with which
Magic represents
[91]
not only basketball
but Laker nation,
[93]
there was a level of--
I think we all felt, like,
[96]
how bad do you want it?
[97]
Right? You not only showed me,
in that day, personally,
[99]
just as a person,
how bad you wanted...
[102]
-this opportunity.
-Yeah, man.
[103]
I mean, going back to that,
I didn't know that story
[107]
about how hard
y'all were looking.
[109]
I just want to say,
I'm glad it was that tough.
[112]
(LAUGHING)
[113]

[115]
Looking back at the '60s
and '70s,
[117]
before we even get
to the showtime era,
[119]
how different was basketball
then than it is
[121]
-when we find our show?
-Oh, my god.
[123]
I grew up in the '70s
into the '80s,
[127]
and basketball was like
the ninth sport.
[131]
It was like baseball,
football--
[134]
-Golf.
-Golf!
[135]
I mean Max is right.
[137]
Golf was bigger
than NBA basketball.
[140]
CBS apparently was ready
to drop the league.
[143]
Then Magic and Larry Bird
came in
[146]
and it just jumped up,
it was crazy.
[149]
You're finding
an underdog theme here, right?
[151]
Where you have a Dr. Buss
who was probably, historically,
[153]
known now for all
his championship success,
[156]
but we find him, Max,
fighting to make this work.
[159]
I mean what's so fun
about the show
[161]
and finding it at this moment
in time
[163]
is that the NBA and all
of these characters
become such icons,
[167]
but we're meeting them
at this moment when none
of that was inevitable.
[172]
Adam, you're in the pilot
here and you're setting
the foundation style-wise.
[175]
How did you go about that?
[176]
We have an amazing director
of photography,

Todd Banhazl,
and that guy is fearless.
[183]
We were like,
"Let's do something different.

while creating a modern formula.
[191]

from old '70s video camera
to 35 mil."</i>
[197]
Audiences are so
sophisticated nowadays.
[201]
We knew they could handle it.
[202]
Quincy, you're now stepping
into Magic Johnson,
[204]
how did you prepare yourself
to do that?
[206]
You know, after the workout
that you put me through...
[209]
(LAUGHTER)
[210]
I started the book, you know,<i>
Showtime</i> by Jeff Pearlman,
[212]
and just dug into that,
and then,
[214]
there's so many videos
on YouTube of Magic.
[216]

and seeing how he acts,
[218]
even today,
just really trying to hone into
[221]
my version of who
he's gonna be on screen.
[224]
Max, was Jerry West actually
opposed to drafting Magic?
[229]
It's documented
that Jerry West thought
[231]
that Sidney Moncrief might be
a better fit for the Lakers.
[234]
Apparently he and Magic
still have some beef about it.
[237]
(CHUCKLES) Okay.

and we think of
[242]
the theme of outsiders
and underdogs,
[243]
will that carry through
a majority of this season?
[246]
Yeah. I think that's kind of
what drew us all to this story.
[251]
The idea that this
legendary team

started as a rag-tag bunch.
