My Goldman Sachs Resume for Investment Banking - YouTube
Channel: Kenji Explains
[0]
hey everyone my name is kenji and in this聽
video i want to share my resume that got me聽聽
[3]
an internship at goldman sachs specifically in聽
their investment banking division in new york city聽聽
[9]
so hopefully this will serve as a bit of a tips聽
and tricks and i'll show you why i did what i did聽聽
[14]
and it's basically all the way leading up to the聽
internship so obviously the internship's not going聽聽
[17]
to be in the resume and here's some proof that i聽
actually worked there in case you're suspicious聽聽
[23]
i'll also be attaching a resume template in聽
the description in case you want to use it for聽聽
[26]
yourself as a bit of a disclaimer if you will聽
this is a resume that's worked for me but that聽聽
[31]
being said there's obviously many other resumes聽
out there that are probably equally as efficient聽聽
[36]
if not better but this one's gotten me interviews聽
with jp morgan morgan stanley bank of america and聽聽
[41]
many others so hopefully this is gonna be useful聽
for you guys so here's the resume and generally聽聽
[46]
speaking it should be one page long i've never聽
seen two page resumes in investment banking聽聽
[52]
and within that one page you want to try to make聽
it as full as possible you really don't want too聽聽
[56]
many white spaces that just looks a bit empty so聽
let's look into the categories generally speaking聽聽
[62]
i have four main ones and they're basically in聽
order of whatever takes up the most time of my day聽聽
[67]
because i was a student education was my number聽
one and then i followed by a professional聽聽
[71]
experience but if you're a full-time worker then聽
your professional experience is going to go on top聽聽
[76]
and education below that right and then after聽
that you have skills and additional education聽聽
[81]
that's the way i used it i know some other聽
friends of mine a goldman for instance used a bit聽聽
[86]
of a different structure where they also have a聽
leadership experience section and that might make聽聽
[90]
sense if you want to include things like you did聽
volunteering that you were present of a certain聽聽
[95]
club in school other things along those lines in聽
my case i didn't have any leadership experience聽聽
[100]
so i just didn't put it there and that's a bit聽
of a recurring theme that in a resume you really聽聽
[105]
just put whatever you're good at and you can聽
omit whatever you're not good at right so you聽聽
[109]
try to make yourself as attractive of a candidate聽
as possible so let's delve into each category and聽聽
[114]
i'll explain why i wrote the things that i did and聽
hopefully there's some takeaways there for you as聽聽
[118]
well so the first category would be the contact聽
details this is fairly self-explanatory really聽聽
[124]
typically you have the address you have聽
your mobile number and you have your email聽聽
[128]
i will say though that sometimes i changed聽
my address to my nationality and the reason聽聽
[133]
being that i want i want to emphasize that i'm聽
a native speaker in a certain language so for聽聽
[137]
instance i don't look very spanish but i'm native聽
in the language so i might put it up there just聽聽
[142]
to demonstrate that if the job requires spanish聽
i'm perfectly confident in the language right聽聽
[148]
so next up we have education because i was聽
a full-time student that's basically what聽聽
[151]
i have on top like i mentioned if you're a聽
full-time worker then you probably have your聽聽
[155]
work experience at the very top that being said聽
within education there's typically two main parts聽聽
[160]
first one is your high school and next is your聽
university that being said in my case for instance聽聽
[166]
because i transferred universities i decided not聽
to put high school and instead i just have the two聽聽
[171]
universities that i went to right also another聽
reason that i don't have my high school is that聽聽
[175]
i personally didn't have very good grades聽
in high school so i decided to omit that聽聽
[179]
and you can really play around with these things聽
and whatever makes your candidacy look stronger聽聽
[184]
also sometimes you might feel like聽
you don't have enough work experience聽聽
[187]
then you might add your high school there and have聽
a couple bullets for that as well right so let's聽聽
[191]
look into cornell university for instance and look聽
into their bullets korean doesn't actually have聽聽
[196]
a finance major so i try to make my resume and聽
the studies more related to finance as possible聽聽
[202]
so that included saying i'm in the business聽
program it included showing off my concentration聽聽
[207]
and other things that like that make it seem like聽
you're keen on investment banking right and as聽聽
[211]
for the grades i had pretty good grades so i made聽
sure to show that off if you don't have very good聽聽
[215]
grades then you might consider omitting it right聽
also because i don't have a leadership experience聽聽
[219]
section i put that i was a teaching assistant in聽
there in a subject in statistics essentially so聽聽
[225]
basically that shows that i'm good with numbers聽
right which is good for an investment bank聽聽
[229]
and then you can see here in the relevant course聽
work that's something fairly unique to my resume聽聽
[233]
and i like to have that there basically to聽
demonstrate that i understand the subject and i'm聽聽
[238]
i'm comfortable with the finance terminology聽
right especially if you're say a history major聽聽
[243]
or something that's really not related to finance聽
it's very good to use that to demonstrate that聽聽
[248]
you are keen on the topic you're not just there聽
for money or something and that you understand聽聽
[252]
it right that being said if you actually include聽
say corporate finance and your relevant coursework聽聽
[258]
odds are if you get to an interview stage聽
they'll ask you about corporate finance聽聽
[262]
so keep that in mind and make sure that聽
you're actually comfortable with the topic聽聽
[265]
next up we have professional experience and this聽
should really be the bulk of your resume it should聽聽
[270]
really occupy the most out of the page that being聽
said i realized that a lot of you probably don't聽聽
[274]
have too much work experience i personally didn't聽
at the time but i even put things like working聽聽
[279]
as a bellman which sure isn't finance related but聽
it's still better than say sitting around parting聽聽
[285]
all day or something right so it shows that聽
you're active and you're trying to do something聽聽
[288]
so typically the way i structured it you have the聽
name of the company followed below that is your聽聽
[293]
title followed by the department name then on the聽
other side you have the date as well as wherever聽聽
[298]
the location was and for the bullets i typically聽
try to keep it consistent i have four each as you聽聽
[303]
can see there sometimes you can also have them聽
in ascending order where your newest job is along聽聽
[308]
with the most bullets obviously don't have your聽
oldest job with the most bullets because that just聽聽
[313]
wouldn't really make much sense right within each聽
bullet you'll notice that i actually in just get聽聽
[317]
right right to the point it's not really a full聽
sentence ideally you should try to use action聽聽
[321]
verbs i use something like evaluated i conducted聽
i analyzed things like that and then you try to聽聽
[327]
quantify wherever possible so you might want to聽
say how much of a budget you had what number of聽聽
[332]
clients you worked with other things like that聽
that are just going to help give context to聽聽
[336]
the reader right also you may have noticed that聽
throughout my resume i try to have big brands in聽聽
[341]
there i think i have mary bloomberg pwc these聽
are fairly well known brands and the reason i聽聽
[346]
have that is i think that a good brand just gives聽
you a lot more credibility right if a big company聽聽
[351]
is willing to trust you with your work then that聽
means that you're probably good you probably have聽聽
[355]
something of value right or else they wouldn't聽
hire you whilst on the other hand if you say you聽聽
[360]
have your dad's restaurant fair enough you might聽
actually learn more from your dad's restaurant聽聽
[364]
but that being said it's it's not as credible聽
of a source as a big company might be right聽聽
[369]
and that's just my opinion right i think that聽
big companies give you good credentials other聽聽
[373]
people might think differently and they might聽
say that it's better to prioritize learning and聽聽
[378]
fair enough you know both arguments work and this聽
is just my opinion so let's go through each job聽聽
[383]
chronologically so my first one was like bellman聽
obviously it doesn't really have much to do with聽聽
[388]
finance but that being said i tried to link it聽
wherever possible to an investment banking role聽聽
[393]
so we know that investment bankers typically work聽
in teams right so i try to mention that in my聽聽
[398]
bellman role they typically act with clients i try聽
to mention that again with my bellman role through聽聽
[403]
guests right and they're comfortable dealing with聽
other people so i try to mention that as well聽聽
[407]
so you really want to touch on the strong聽
points and try to create a bit of a link between聽聽
[411]
the role that you were at and the role that聽
you want to be at next up i have bloomberg and聽聽
[416]
you can see that it was really only a one-week聽
program but i thought it was worth mentioning聽聽
[420]
it's finance related so it's better than a bellman聽
rule say so that's a big plus also it demonstrates聽聽
[425]
that i'm keen on the industry i understand how it聽
works if you look at my bullets i clearly state聽聽
[430]
that i've done research that i've worked with聽
the bloomberg terminal which is a tool that they聽聽
[434]
use fairly often in investment banks and that i聽
overall understand how the markets function right聽聽
[440]
so lastly i have pwc and i worked as a financial聽
auditor there so i used a lot of the skills that聽聽
[444]
investment bankers use like good knowledge of聽
accounting good knowledge of finance and working聽聽
[449]
on excel a lot right so i try to emphasize that聽
i mentioned that i've worked on financial models聽聽
[454]
that i've worked on excel in particular聽
and also that i've worked as a team聽聽
[459]
and interacted with different clients right in聽
my case it was departments at specific companies聽聽
[464]
and you can see i also mentioned that clients that聽
i worked with that's mainly because they were high聽聽
[468]
profile or big name clients like the volkswagen聽
group say and so if pwc trusts me to go work at聽聽
[474]
volkswagen and see their financial statements聽
that probably means that i wasn't incompetent聽聽
[478]
right i was fairly decent and so they were able聽
to trust me with my work so moving on to the skill聽聽
[484]
section here i have computer skills as well聽
as languages i have languages on top mainly聽聽
[489]
because that's what i'm fairly good at i'm fluent聽
in five languages so i think that's something that聽聽
[493]
makes me a fairly attractive candidate so i try to聽
emphasize it that being said if you only speak one聽聽
[498]
language say english for instance then there's no聽
need to have a language section right don't put it聽聽
[503]
if you feel like it's going to be to the detriment聽
of your resume right if you want to say that you聽聽
[507]
speak more than one language really be honest聽
about this stuff try not to lie wherever possible聽聽
[512]
i personally had an interview with one person聽
in three different languages spanish french聽聽
[517]
and english so just make sure you really don't聽
want to be in that embarrassing scenario where聽聽
[522]
they speak to you in french and you don't have聽
a clue what to respond right now for computers聽聽
[526]
pretty much everyone says that they know word聽
powerpoint and excel so if you want to try to聽聽
[531]
stand out above that you might actually get into聽
the details of what you know in excel for instance聽聽
[536]
like in my case i put some formulas in there聽
that i'm comfortable with to kind of show off聽聽
[541]
and make yourself just that slightly better than聽
the other guy right you might also have some other聽聽
[545]
computer skills that aren't necessarily related to聽
investment banking like say python or javascript聽聽
[552]
but those are actually fairly impressive if聽
you will as in people will will respect that so聽聽
[557]
maybe that's the reason to put it as well right聽
the last part i have is additional information聽聽
[562]
honestly this part is fairly loose everyone聽
has it a bit differently and that's fair enough聽聽
[566]
i will say though that a lot of people don't聽
really think about it too much but i really think聽聽
[570]
it's a super important part mainly because this is聽
how you you actually say befriend the recruiter or聽聽
[575]
an interviewer in that if you both went to聽
the same gym club say or if you want if you聽聽
[580]
both support the same football team these are all聽
things that actually connect with each other on a聽聽
[585]
personal level that can really make the difference聽
between say two very good candidates two ivy聽聽
[590]
league candidates you might be that just won't聽
be better because the person liked you more right聽聽
[595]
so here i actually started off with competitive聽
sports in my case i played a lot of sports聽聽
[600]
throughout high school i played for img academy聽
and then i played for a pro teams youth academy so聽聽
[605]
those are things that i thought were fairly unique聽
to me and investment bankers actually on the whole聽聽
[611]
they do like the the athlete mentality if you聽
will they also like military veterans quite a聽聽
[615]
lot so those are things that if you do have them聽
do emphasize and they might not be sports right聽聽
[620]
it might be something like music or dancing that聽
you've done competitively these are all things聽聽
[624]
that will add to your resume and it's also a聽
good conversation starter now for interests um be聽聽
[630]
honest about your interest don't put like i i love聽
financial modeling or anything like that because聽聽
[635]
that's just pushing it recruiters won't think聽
that's genuine and fair enough i wouldn't either聽聽
[640]
right so put things like i don't know if you聽
like surfing you put surfing running whatever聽聽
[644]
some people put books a lot and that's fair聽
enough i will say that i have books as well聽聽
[648]
and fairly often in interviews they would ask me聽
what book i read most recently so make sure you聽聽
[654]
have one in mind right then for certificates and聽
achievements i really just have some credentials聽聽
[659]
that prove my fluency in the languages i claim聽
to be fluent at so in this case it's french and聽聽
[663]
english i have some certificates for those聽
and i also have some scholarships that i've聽聽
[667]
earned along the way right for you it might be sat聽
scores it might be a championship that you've won聽聽
[673]
other things like that basically if you don't聽
feel like you have any good ones then just take聽聽
[677]
them out and these don't have to be finance聽
related at all right and then lastly i have an聽聽
[682]
additional education part and some of you might聽
say like hey that should be at the very top and聽聽
[686]
fair enough maybe it should it actually i actually聽
had it at the very top back in the day but as my聽聽
[691]
resume got longer and longer and it wasn't it聽
was past one page i decided to put it back down聽聽
[696]
and make it a lot shorter right so it's really聽
depending on how how you feel about your resume聽聽
[701]
if you feel like you don't have enough space and聽
put it at the very top and try to expand on it聽聽
[704]
i will say that when you put it at the top聽
sometimes it just looks like it's as important聽聽
[708]
as your degree when really it was only a say聽
a two-week short course so try to keep that聽聽
[713]
in mind and if you're enjoying the video feel聽
free to like and subscribe it really helps out聽聽
[717]
the channel a lot lastly if you want to break into聽
investment banking i also made an external course聽聽
[721]
that i'll link down below which basically outlines聽
the whole process is essentially the class that i聽聽
[727]
wish i had while i was going into the process so聽
it goes all the way from what kind of a degree you聽聽
[732]
should have what kind of measure you should be in聽
all the way to the application prep the networking聽聽
[738]
the interviews what kind of questions they聽
might ask so it's really a complete package聽聽
[742]
and if you're keen on that feel free to check it聽
out so yeah if you have some questions about any聽聽
[746]
particular part of the cv feel free to comment聽
them and i'll make sure to get back to you and聽聽
[750]
that's all for this video thank you for watching聽
and i'll hopefully catch you in the next one
