Why There's No "Joker" Movie Merch - YouTube
Channel: The Warp Zone
[2]
- All right everybody, welcome
[4]
to the Q4 merchandising brainstorm
[6]
for our upcoming DC projects.
[8]
As you know, last holiday
season, we had a big boost
[10]
thanks to Bob and his
"Aquaman" integrations.
[13]
- Yes, we had a lot of
success across the board
[16]
with both our clothing
and our collectible lines.
[19]
But we also had a surprising
amount of traction
[21]
in the ice cream sector,
[22]
with both our Cold Stone Creamery
[24]
and Pinkberry integrations.
[26]
- Bob, that ocean blue
velvet cake was as tasty
[29]
as it was profitable.
[30]
- Tell me about it, now
I have type two diabetes.
[33]
(laughing)
[37]
- His pancreas is broken!
[41]
- All right, all right,
moving on to summer,
[43]
we had our sleeper hit "Shazam!"
really come out of nowhere.
[46]
Thankfully Lisa was there
[47]
to capitalize on the film's success.
[49]
- Oh you're too kind Phil.
[51]
Thanks to the film's
younger target audience,
[53]
we were really able to
cater to the Gen Z market.
[55]
The action figures and kid's costumes
[57]
practically sold themselves.
[59]
Plus thanks to an integral
convenient store scene,
[61]
we were able to broker an
extremely lucrative deal
[64]
with 7-Eleven and their slurpees.
[66]
- Aw, great stuff Lisa, great stuff.
[69]
All right now we move on to holiday 2019
[71]
and oh boy we got a doozy coming up.
[73]
As you all know, Batman is
by far our biggest seller,
[77]
and this fall we're releasing a film
[78]
that's the origin story for
his most famous villain.
[81]
Plus it's directed by the
guy who did "The Hangover"
[83]
so you know it's gonna be hilarious.
[85]
So, Jerry, what've you got for "Joker"?
[92]
(Jerry sighs)
[98]
- You guys haven't seen the
movie by chance, have you?
[101]
- Nope.
[104]
- Yeah, yeah I figured as much.
[108]
Look, there's not really
a lot of opportunities
[111]
for merch in it.
[113]
- Not a lot of opportunities
for "Joker" merch?
[115]
I think Hot Topic would beg to differ.
[117]
(laughing)
[122]
I mean, "Suicide Squad"
was barely even a movie
[125]
and we still managed to sell
the Harley Quinn costume
[127]
to every college girl ever.
[129]
(laughing)
[136]
Okay, okay, okay, enough fooling around.
[139]
What do you really got, Jer?
[141]
- Oh boy, okay.
[143]
Here we go.
[147]
(sighs)
[149]
Uh, we got, the chain lock.
[153]
Let your friends out,
but keep your enemies in.
[156]
Chain lock, woo.
[160]
- I'm not seeing a connection here.
[164]
- Well you would if you'd
seen the movie, Bob.
[167]
- All right, all right, you know what?
[168]
Let's just put a pin in that.
[171]
What else you got?
[172]
- Uh, okay, then how about
[175]
this pillow.
[178]
- Oh, okay, then we just
put the Joker's face on it?
[184]
- Um,
[186]
that's not really the point.
[187]
You know what, nevermind.
[189]
- Jer, come on, you gotta
think of something here.
[192]
- Uh, okay, hold on.
[195]
How about cigarettes.
[198]
- Jerry, come on, what is it, the 90s?
[200]
I wish.
[202]
- This gun.
[205]
- No, Walmart's out, sorry.
[208]
- This laminated card explaining
[210]
a debilitating mental condition
[212]
which symbolizes a desperate
man's plea for compassion
[214]
and understanding in an
uncaring and indifferent world?
[218]
- Yeah you lost me.
[220]
- Well then,
[223]
there's no way to merchandise this film.
[225]
- No merchandising?
[227]
Jerry do you hear yourself?
[229]
What's the point of even
making a movie if not
[231]
to exploit the viewer's
emotional connection
[232]
by selling a bunch tertiarily related crap
[234]
they don't even need?
[237]
(sighs)
[237]
- Look, Phil, I get it.
[240]
Filmmaking is a business.
[241]
Movies wouldn't be made if
there wasn't a good chance
[243]
of them making a profit.
[245]
But at least there used to be
a time where we had a balance
[248]
between artistry and industry.
[250]
Where a film could just tell its story
[253]
without having to worry about
spawning sequels and spinoffs
[256]
and more merch than 10
landfills could hold.
[259]
I mean, when did wringing
everything for its last dollar
[261]
become the norm?
[262]
Can't we just make a really good movie
[264]
about a really popular character
[266]
and have the massive box
office returns be enough?
[269]
And if that film deals
with heavy themes like
[271]
mental illness and society's
inability to deal with it
[274]
in any sort of meaningful way.
[276]
Maybe we don't cheapen
it by releasing a bunch
[278]
of plastic knickknacks that
ultimately mean nothing.
[283]
Maybe we should let a movie
[285]
just be a movie.
[288]
- Wow, you know what Jerry?
[291]
You're right.
[292]
Maybe we can let this movie
stand on its own two feet
[294]
for once.
[296]
Yeah.
[298]
Tell you what.
[298]
Why don't I transfer
your over to another one
[300]
of Warner's big fall movies?
[301]
This one should be a
home run for you buddy.
[303]
It's based on the very
popular Steven King property,
[306]
and I think it's got huge
merchandise potential.
[309]
- (gasps) "Maximum Overdrive"?
[311]
- Nope, even better.
[313]
It's the sequel to "The
Shining," "Doctor Sleep."
[316]
(dreadful suspense music)
[327]
- Hey everybody, Odom
from the Warp Zone here.
[329]
Thank you so much for watching.
