How Much Does a Trust Cost? - YouTube

Hi Lee Phillips here.
[2]
I want to talk to you today
[4]
about a reasonable price for a living revocable trust.
[8]
The living revocable trusts are complex
[13]
to simple
[14]
so there's a big variation
[17]
they are anywhere from 3 pages to 100 pages long
[22]
depending upon what you get the price is
going to vary
[25]
and you can even do them yourself
[27]
legal doom I think charges $600-700 for the living revocable trust
[32]
and you get them online
[37]
I have a kit for you that does them
[38]
you can do them yourself
[40]
you can do it for your mom, your dad, yourself
[43]
and the funny thing is
[44]
his mom and dad's trust looks about like her mom and dad's trust
[47]
looks about like your trust
[48]
lawyers don't create new
[50]
documents for everybody that walks in off the street
[53]
most of it, 95% of it is boilerplate.
[58]
So back to the price
[60]
what's the price going to be?
[61]
Well if you're in California, your insurance agent
[64]
and your accountant
[67]
and a half a dozen other people under California law
[70]
can do living revocable trusts.
[73]
in most states it's the lawyer only
[76]
and Californians pay more for everything anyway so
[80]
when we're talking a price it doesn't matter
[83]
whether the accountant's doing it or the lawyer's doing it
[87]
you're gonna pay a chunk
[89]
chunks
[90]
I'm gonna say bare minimum for the lawyer these days is about $1000
[94]
well I'm gonna say $1500
[98]
let's say $1500
[99]
nah, you're not gonna get it for $1,000
[102]
$1500 that's the bare minimum
[105]
a really good price in hometown America for mom and pop today
[110]
let's say anywhere from $2,000-$5,000
[114]
for the living revocable trust.
[117]
If you're under two, ehhhh
[119]
I don't know
[120]
if you're over five well something's got to be more complicated
[123]
you're in the big glass buildings downtown
[126]
and the lawyer just charges more
[129]
I mean I'm stunned of what lawyers
charge in downtown Manhattan these days
[134]
in fact if you're in downtown Manhattan
you're not $2000-$5000
[140]
you're $10,000-$15,0000
[142]
I'd pretty much guarantee that.
[144]
So it somewhat depends on where you are as well.
[147]
Then the lawyer isn't going to charge
you by the hour
[152]
for your living revocable trust
[153]
he's going to charge you by the piece
[155]
the package
[156]
the package is going to include the living revocable trust
[159]
and then it's gonna include a pour-over will
[164]
that's different than the standard testamentary will
[168]
because it doesn't distribute the property
[170]
it "pours" it all over
[172]
into the living revocable trust
[173]
and we have a YouTube on pour over wills
[177]
so it's going to pour it over into the trust.
[179]
The trust is going to distribute the property.
[182]
Then you're often going to have a durable power of attorney
included in this package
[189]
and that may include HIPPA stuff
[191]
it might include medical directive
[193]
living will
[194]
that sort of thing.
[195]
This all comes in a package together.
[198]
The lawyer will usually
[200]
if you give him the deeds
[202]
the property descriptions
[203]
he'll usually prepare deeds
[205]
to move the property from you
[208]
into the living revocable trust.
[210]
It might include a Schedule A
[213]
but we have YouTube's on Schedule As
[217]
or the schedules for the trust
[219]
they're worthless basically
[221]
you're gonna have to do that
[223]
so you're gonna get the package
[226]
the trust, the will, the power of attorney, the durable power of attorney
[229]
and that's gonna be your basic
package.
[232]
You'll get an instruction set
[234]
that teaches you how to move property into the trust
[238]
that sort of thing
[240]
It may be in a nice binder
[242]
it could be in fancy leather binder
[246]
all sorts of different variations
[248]
that lawyers do
[250]
I just wrap mine in a blue paper
[253]
and put some staples on it.
[255]
The blue paper and the staples
[257]
go to the evidence
[258]
that you haven't undone that
[260]
and the document hasn't been tampered with.
[264]
If it's in a binder you can take the pages out
[267]
three-ring binder all day long, right?
[269]
Well, we want some evidence that it hasn't been tampered with
[273]
so I just use a blue paper.
[275]
At any rate
[276]
hometown USA today
[280]
easy distribution to the kids equally when mom and dad die
[285]
no fancy life trusts
[287]
and it's not taxable
[290]
if you've got an estate tax issue
[292]
price is going to go up
[293]
because it becomes more complicated
[296]
we have the a/b trust and all that sort of stuff that we have to deal with
[299]
so $2,000-$5000 is not unreasonable today
[303]
hometown USA
[304]
for your living revocable trust
