President Trump and president Solinsky
[2]
discussed their now public phone call
[4]
with reporters today at the United
[6]
Nations we had I think good phone call
[12]
it was normal we spoke about many things
[15]
and I so I think and you are ready that
[21]
nobody push it pushed me yes pressure is
[27]
irrelevant
[27]
the only legal point that matters is
[29]
that Donald Trump very clearly asked
[31]
president Solinsky for help in trying to
[33]
harm a candidate running for president
[35]
against Donald Trump that is now an
[38]
irrefutable fact and it is a fact big
[41]
enough to get Donald Trump impeached
[43]
joining our discussion now is ambassador
[45]
Wendy Sherman as Undersecretary of state
[47]
in the Obama administration she was
[48]
leading ago share and the Iran nuclear
[49]
deal she's also on MSNBC global affairs
[52]
contributor and Ben Rhodes the former
[53]
deputy national security adviser to
[55]
President Obama as well as he's an MSNBC
[57]
political analyst but let me start with
[59]
you I know you've been on these calls
[61]
you've been one of the number of people
[63]
listening when it was President Obama
[65]
you've read these documents this is my
[67]
first and I've never read one of these
[68]
before it today it's my first yeah I
[70]
imagine your hands shaking holding this
[73]
in your hands today yeah I mean Lawrence
[75]
I actually got the transcript every
[77]
phone call President Obama made so I've
[79]
read hundreds and hundreds of those and
[81]
I've never ever seen anything like this
[83]
I mean first of all you have to consider
[86]
the the context of Ukraine and of course
[89]
the president view crane is saying what
[91]
present troubles here there his country
[93]
is besieged you know Crimea has been
[95]
annexed there are people being killed in
[96]
eastern Ukraine he's dependent on this
[98]
aid which is a lifeline for Ukraine and
[101]
for the present nine states to
[103]
essentially be leveraging aid that is a
[105]
lifeline to a country that has been
[107]
invaded by an adversary of the United
[109]
States because all he cares about is not
[111]
the national interest not the people of
[112]
Ukraine all he cares about is his own
[114]
political interests is the definition of
[117]
corruption and I've tell you what it's
[119]
the other thing I think we know about
[121]
this because the whistleblower there's
[122]
one little window open on to one phone
[124]
call where else is this happening you
[126]
know if this is you know everything we
[128]
know about how Trump operates is this
[129]
happening with Saudi Arabia is this
[131]
happening with Russia right so to
[133]
this is a peek at how Trump actually
[136]
operates and what that shows you is the
[138]
complete and utter corruption of
[140]
American foreign policy when ensuring
[143]
your reaction my reaction is quite
[145]
similar I found that press conference so
[148]
painful today
[149]
zalinsky was trying so hard to walk this
[152]
very difficult line flattering the
[155]
president saying he didn't get pressured
[158]
while the same time saying we're an
[160]
independent country I can't ask a
[162]
prosecutor to do a particular something
[164]
he was trying to show he's not a corrupt
[167]
leader which is essential in modern
[170]
Ukraine given its history and at the
[172]
same time he had to sit next to the
[174]
president United States who said hey why
[176]
don't you and Putin get together and
[177]
sort of work this problem out
[179]
Putin is killing his people just
[182]
extraordinary
[183]
yeah I've been the the underlying policy
[186]
with Ukraine is one of the things that
[188]
isn't getting focused on much here but I
[189]
do want to show that moment of Donald
[192]
Trump today here is the president
[194]
Solinsky and what he calls a war he used
[197]
the word war today repeatedly publicly
[199]
about his situation with Russia and here
[203]
is what Donald Trump said about that I
[206]
really hope that Russia because I really
[209]
believe that President Putin would like
[210]
to do something I really hope that you
[212]
and President Putin get together and can
[214]
solve your problem that would be a
[216]
tremendous achievement
[217]
and I know you're trying to do that I've
[219]
been this this is FDR telling wood you
[225]
know and Winston Churchill I hope you
[226]
can work this out with Hitler yeah I
[228]
mean Putin has taken a piece of the
[231]
territory of Ukraine Putin is back in
[233]
people arming people who are killing
[235]
people in eastern Ukraine this is a
[237]
spent the last two and half years of the
[240]
Obama administration and Wendy was front
[242]
and center in this to mobilizing
[244]
Europeans to impose sanctions on Russia
[247]
figuring out what assistance packages
[249]
could go to Ukraine to help them weather
[250]
this incredible storm their own in
[252]
Donald Trump sees this as nothing more
[255]
than the kind of a mere sideshow what he
[257]
cares about is on that call talk to Rudy
[260]
Giuliani talk to Bill Barr talk to my
[263]
kind of personal lawyers and it's first
[265]
of all a bad thing that the Attorney
[266]
General
[267]
to be a personal lawyer under the
[268]
presidency it's about this completely
[271]
meaningless corruption investigation
[272]
because the other thing I'd say money
[274]
was there too
[274]
the decision to recommend that they get
[277]
rid of that prosecutor was an
[279]
interagency process the interagency
[281]
meaning the State Department comes
[282]
together the NSC at the White House and
[284]
others this person was at the heart of a
[285]
lot of corruption had nothing to do with
[286]
Hunter Baden so he's inventing
[288]
conspiracy theories to suit his own
[290]
politics and asking a man who just got
[293]
elected to a country that has been
[294]
invaded by its neighbor to facilitate
[296]
the skin severity theories and on the
[298]
issue that really matters that Russia
[300]
invaded his country he's saying oh you
[302]
know I hope you work it out I'm sure
[303]
Putin's committed to doing that that's
[305]
taking Putin's side just like he did in
[306]
Helsinki when he said Putin didn't
[308]
really interfere in our election and and
[310]
Wendy the the Europeans were wanted this
[313]
prosecutor out of the way in Ukraine
[315]
because they felt that the just nothing
[319]
serious was happening with this
[320]
president absolutely the Europeans were
[322]
very much in line with what we were
[323]
trying to do to get rid of this corrupt
[325]
prosecutor and the other thing here is
[327]
the whole reason we're here is because
[330]
that Ukraine needed military aid it
[333]
wanted as he said today those javelins
[336]
and the president knew that created
[338]
leverage and you see how that comes up
[340]
in the conversation the president says
[342]
yes but there really hasn't been any
[344]
reciprocity and I'd like to ask you a
[346]
favor though and so we know that this is
[349]
all connected and so when people say
[351]
there's nothing direct here I think it's
[354]
plain as day then how many people would
[356]
have heard a phone call like this and
[358]
would be aware of the contents of a
[360]
phone call like this a pretty good
[361]
number Lauren Simon you'd have several
[363]
people in the Oval Office for that call
[364]
the leadership of the NSC staff the
[367]
relevant people who work on Ukraine and
[369]
the NSC then people like your guest
[371]
Larry Pfeifer who we worked with in the
[373]
Situation Room listening and making a
[374]
record of the call and then usually the
[376]
transcript is disseminated and the
[378]
report seemed to suggest that part of
[380]
what got the attention of the
[381]
whistleblower is that they were handling
[383]
this call differently that they were
[384]
trying to restrict access to the
[386]
transcript of this call I think it's
[388]
also very important for your viewers to
[390]
understand it's not just this transcript
[392]
what else was going on why was Rudy
[394]
Giuliani flying out to Ukraine why was
[396]
the State Department again if based on
[398]
the reports we've read directing you
[400]
know
[400]
Rudy Guiliani to be involved in this at
[402]
all he's a private citizen who
[403]
represents the present state so we
[405]
shouldn't see this transcript as the end
[407]
of the story I think it's a again a
[409]
window into a much broader corruption of
[411]
our policy towards the Ukraine towards
[413]
Russia and front-and-center and all
[415]
these matters is not the American people
[417]
and keep in mind that's our tax dollars
[419]
that assistance going to Ukraine that's
[421]
our tax dollars being used like a part
[424]
of Trump's campaign war chest until
[425]
leverage again a foreign leader to do
[428]
his bidding
[428]
and so I'd like to see us pull all these
[430]
different threads on in terms of what
[432]
was going on around not just a phone
[435]
call but Ukraine policy general Wendy
[437]
all these years on the call of one
[440]
whistleblower only one yes I think we're
[444]
in a time where people are terrified to
[446]
become a whistleblower you have to be
[449]
pretty sure of what you're doing and if
[450]
you're an intelligence officer you know
[452]
that your life is on the line and that
[454]
intelligence officers work not to be
[457]
known by people they work to be quietly
[459]
doing the work to protect us and protect
[461]
our national security so for this
[464]
whistleblower knowing particularly this
[466]
president and this administration which
[468]
believes in punishing people after all
[470]
the president talked about our then
[472]
ambassador to Ukraine who he basically
[476]
said was doing bad things and he was
[477]
going to take care of her which he did
[479]
which is to push her out of government
[480]
this is a punitive administration and so
[485]
this whistleblower must have really
[487]
believed there was corruption here and
[489]
we saw the president as he always does
[491]
he talks about how everybody else is
[494]
corrupt to deflect from his own deep
[496]
corruption then I think the the
[498]
disturbing thought of the night I think
[500]
for the audience's this is just one
[501]
phone call
[502]
this is just one phone call one
[504]
whistleblower ambassador Wendy Sherman
