Channel: Real Men Real Style
[0]
hey guys it's thomas with real men real
[2]
style here so you have this amazing pair
[4]
of trousers in the perfect fabric
[6]
the only problem they just don't fit
[9]
quite right
[9]
maybe they're just a little too baggy
[11]
which makes you look sloppy and unkempt
[13]
or maybe they're a little too long
[15]
leaving pools of fabric around your
[17]
shoes
[18]
don't give up hope and throw them away
[20]
today i'm going to teach you how to
[21]
easily tailor your trousers at home
[23]
no sewing machine required here are the
[25]
tools you'll need to get started
[27]
a sewing needle a thread that matches
[29]
your trouser fabric
[30]
safety pins sewing pins a fabric pencil
[34]
or chalk
[34]
a seam ripper a ruler and an iron
[38]
so first we're going to start with how
[39]
to slim the trouser leg
[41]
step one measure and pin there are two
[43]
methods you can use to get the right
[44]
measurements
[45]
the first method is to use an existing
[47]
pair of trousers that fit you perfectly
[49]
as a guide turn your pants inside out
[51]
then lay your perfect fitting pair
[53]
on top you can slim your pants from the
[55]
inside seam
[56]
the outside seam or both i recommend
[59]
sticking with the inside seam
[60]
as any mistakes will be less visible
[63]
line up the outside seams and the crotch
[65]
then trace along the inside seam with a
[67]
fabric pencil or chalk
[69]
once that's done pin the fabric in place
[71]
to keep it from moving while you sew
[73]
if you don't have a perfect fitting pair
[74]
of trousers to use as a reference
[76]
you will need to figure out how much
[77]
fabric to remove yourself turn the
[79]
trousers inside
[80]
out then put them on put safety pins on
[82]
the inner seam until it fits as snugly
[84]
as you'd like move around to make sure
[86]
they aren't too tight
[88]
you want to be able to still sit down
[89]
without ripping them open
[91]
take off the trousers and lay them on a
[92]
flat surface trace along the line of
[94]
safety pins with a fabric pencil or
[96]
chalk make sure the taper smoothly
[98]
transitions into the crotch or the upper
[100]
leg
[101]
an abrupt transition will leave ugly
[102]
looking dimples switch out the safety
[104]
pins with sewing pins and you're good to
[106]
go
[107]
step two time to sew cut your thread so
[110]
it's more than twice the length you'll
[111]
be tapering
[112]
we're going to double thread the needle
[113]
for maximum strength it's wise to cut a
[116]
couple extra feet of thread
[117]
it's better to have slightly too much
[119]
thread than to run out
[120]
part way through pull the thread through
[122]
the needle making sure both ends are
[124]
equal in length before making a knot
[127]
if you're like me and you have trouble
[128]
threading a needle be sure to smash that
[130]
like button
[133]
wrap the thread around your index finger
[135]
to form an x pinch that x between your
[137]
index finger and thumb
[138]
then slide your index finger back bring
[140]
your middle finger down in front to hold
[142]
it
[142]
before pulling the thread with your
[144]
other hand
[146]
this leaves you with a strong knot that
[147]
won't come undone
[149]
now take your threadripper and cut a two
[151]
to three inch stretch of hem loose from
[152]
around the inside seam
[154]
this will allow us to cover up the new
[156]
side seam later for a
[157]
polished final look begin sewing at one
[160]
end of the trousers
[161]
following the line you drew with the
[162]
fabric pencil alternate pushing the
[164]
needle through one side
[165]
then bring it back to the other try to
[167]
keep your stitches close together for
[168]
maximum strength
[170]
two to three millimeters is a good
[171]
baseline it's tempting to go for longer
[174]
stitches to save time but you're going
[175]
to regret it if your pants would rip
[177]
open
[177]
if you were cutting corners continue to
[179]
sew along the line you drew
[180]
until you reach the end create a knot by
[182]
pulling the needle through the last
[184]
stitch
[184]
to form a loop then pull the needle
[186]
through that loop to form a knot
[188]
do this a couple of times to make sure
[190]
it's good and secure
[192]
re-sew the hem to cover the end of the
[194]
new seam now
[196]
repeat the process on the other leg step
[198]
three iron and press
[200]
we're almost done now take your iron and
[202]
press the new seam flat
[204]
so it will drape cleanly make sure your
[206]
iron is set to the correct temperature
[207]
for your fabric
[208]
your trousers should now fit nice and
[210]
trimmed now let's talk about how to hem
[212]
those trousers that are too long
[214]
step one measure and pin just like when
[216]
slimming your trousers if you have a
[218]
pair of pants that are the perfect
[219]
length
[220]
you can use them to get the right
[221]
measurements make sure your pants are
[223]
inside out
[224]
then lay the perfect fitting pair of
[225]
pants on top of them make sure they line
[227]
up at the crotch
[228]
then mark across the hem with a fabric
[230]
pencil or chalk
[231]
if you don't have the perfect fitting
[232]
pair of pants you will need to figure
[234]
out the correct length for yourself
[236]
put on the trousers and roll up the hem
[237]
until they are the perfect length for
[239]
you
[239]
make sure to do this while wearing a
[240]
pair of dress shoes if you do this step
[242]
with just socks you may end up with
[244]
pants that still don't fit correctly
[246]
with shoes
[246]
put a pin in the bottom of the fold then
[248]
take off the trousers and turn them
[250]
inside out
[251]
using the pin you place as a guide mark
[253]
a line across the width of the trousers
[255]
now create a new line two inches below
[257]
the line you just drew
[258]
use your thread ripper to undo the
[260]
original hem if you don't have two
[261]
inches of fabric
[262]
now cut off all the extra fabric below
[264]
this line now we're going to take our
[266]
fabric pencil and we're going to draw
[267]
another line two inches above the
[269]
original line we made
[270]
fold the fabric up to that top line now
[273]
they are sitting at the correct length
[274]
use your iron to press the end of the
[276]
hem so it will stay in place we also
[278]
don't want the top end of the hem to
[279]
fray so we will fold it inward to keep
[281]
everything neat and tidy
[282]
fold the fabric in half under itself so
[285]
we will be left with a one inch hem
[287]
keep folding around the entire trouser
[289]
leg pinning the fabric in place as you
[291]
go
[292]
step two time to sew we're going to
[294]
follow the same process as before
[296]
double threading the needle then making
[298]
a knot now start sewing
[300]
keeping your stitches an eighth of an
[301]
inch from the top of the hem go all the
[303]
way around the hem
[304]
keeping the stitches neat and tidy
[306]
create a knot once you reach the end
[308]
then repeat the process on the other
[310]
side step three
[311]
iron and press once we're finished
[313]
sewing we're going to take the hem and
[315]
press it flat with the iron one more
[316]
time
[317]
just to make sure it's sitting nice and
[319]
clean there we go gentlemen
[321]
from unkempt and sloppy to stylish and
[323]
sharp
[324]
this technique also works on any kind of
[326]
trousers including jeans and chinos
[328]
