HOW TO MAKE MONEY WITH PHOTOGRAPHY - Things I wish I knew - YouTube

Channel: Peter McKinnon

[2]
we're getting a little carried away with
[3]
these this this is like completely
[5]
modded with like a hardcore spring in
[8]
here and it's just it's it's getting out
[11]
of hand yeah I don't need this
[22]
I've got enough energy what's up
[24]
everybody Peter MacKinnon here and
[26]
welcome back to another tutorial this is
[28]
part three in mistakes that you want to
[31]
avoid as a photographer or filmmaker the
[33]
first part we're talking about shooting
[35]
actual applications with the camera the
[37]
second part we talked about editing
[39]
mistakes that you make when editing when
[41]
you're a beginner and the third section
[42]
today's video we are covering the
[44]
business aspect of mistakes to avoid as
[47]
a young entrepreneur photographer or
[50]
filmmaker setting out into the world to
[52]
try and make this a career or trying to
[53]
make some money from this maybe it's
[55]
just some extra cash on the weekend or a
[57]
full-blown like paycheck these are a
[59]
couple things I've compiled that I wish
[61]
I had when I started or wish that I did
[64]
better and we're gonna start with those
[69]
number one contracts contracts are so
[72]
important they are no fun at all to make
[74]
they're no fun to read and they're no
[76]
fun to sign but they are there to
[78]
protect you no matter who you are
[80]
shooting for listen to me no matter who
[82]
you're shooting for it's a friend if
[84]
it's family it doesn't matter you get a
[86]
contract lay out everything that you
[88]
hope to do for that person both of you
[90]
sign it date it whatever if there's
[92]
compensation both of those things are
[93]
agreed you've both signed it's done that
[96]
way if anything comes up if extra work
[98]
is piled on if you didn't do enough work
[100]
both parties have a signed document
[102]
clearly outlining what the expectations
[105]
are because I find that's the biggest
[106]
loophole that's the biggest mistake is
[108]
expectations are always different from
[111]
one person to the other and of those
[113]
expectations are set clear at the very
[115]
beginning and they're followed through
[116]
to the end because you have a contract
[118]
business is better so if you don't have
[121]
a contract download a sample template
[123]
check it out read it maybe fill in your
[125]
own stuff instead of the sample do
[127]
whatever you got to do take it to a
[128]
lawyer get a friend to look at it get
[130]
your parents to look at it your older
[132]
siblings to look at it whatever start
[134]
with something okay signed agreements
[137]
that is point number one
[141]
number two is not charging enough now
[144]
I'm an advocate for working for free at
[146]
the beginning to get your foot in the
[147]
door a lot of people are like no you
[148]
should never undersell yourself your
[151]
time is worth yes your time is valuable
[153]
and your time is worth money but
[154]
hustling and doing work pro bono
[159]
it's going to get you into more doors it
[162]
gonna open up more doors for it's gonna
[163]
get you into more places meet new people
[166]
it helped build my career it helped
[168]
build careers like my friend D Rock who
[170]
just put a great post online about how
[172]
he worked for free right up to hustling
[174]
to be Gary V's personal videographer
[176]
that is awesome but not charging enough
[179]
is something I could have done better as
[180]
a growing entrepreneur and a
[182]
photographer trying to make it in the
[183]
field I was always just so excited to
[186]
get a gig that I completely forgot what
[188]
I should be charging what my time is
[190]
worth not only are you supplying the
[192]
equipment for this job you're taking
[194]
your gear that you bought to a photo
[196]
shoot you're driving your vehicle using
[198]
your gas taking the time out of your day
[200]
then you're coming back and you're
[201]
editing all those photos that's also
[204]
skill with software that you're paying
[206]
for so the list goes on and on and on
[208]
and on those things are valuable so once
[211]
you start charging for your work make
[214]
sure you're charging enough I mean you
[216]
think about it like some of these
[217]
cameras are thousands and thousands of
[218]
dollars if you're gonna go do some
[220]
portrait shots and you're only gonna
[221]
charge a hundred bucks or 200 bucks for
[223]
a quick portrait session one what does
[225]
that say about you as a photographer and
[226]
the quality of work that you put out and
[228]
to how is that ever actually gonna make
[230]
you money or pay back your gear or
[232]
actually get you ahead in this game so
[234]
make sure you're charging enough
[235]
sometimes you can throw numbers out
[237]
there that might even see a little crazy
[239]
to you and that client comes back and
[241]
goes yeah all right no problem and you
[242]
think yourself oh it can be very
[248]
exciting but it's something that you got
[250]
to take seriously so really sit down and
[252]
factor in all of those things I listed
[254]
to know what your time is worth in
[256]
charge accordingly
[257]
point number three coming up
[261]
boy number three is checklists I can't
[264]
stress this enough so if you're going on
[266]
a shoot let's just say you're shooting a
[267]
wedding you've got the contract in place
[268]
you've charged what you wanted to now
[270]
comes to the actual shoot day I always
[273]
recommend getting a checklist from the
[275]
client of everything they want done that
[278]
way you can reference that throughout
[280]
the day throughout the shoot and you
[281]
know you've got everything if that
[283]
client fails to provide you something on
[286]
that checklist it is not your fault
[287]
example let's just say you're shooting a
[289]
wedding you've got that checklist and
[291]
get the dress get the drinks in the
[293]
morning get the gifts the first look
[295]
blah blah you're knocking off all those
[297]
things but then maybe two weeks later
[298]
that client comes back and says aunt
[300]
Margaret never had her portrait taken
[302]
with us and were very upset about this
[304]
and she flew all the way here from
[306]
Australia and we're not going to see her
[308]
ever again and you didn't even take
[309]
photos and then you can pull out that
[311]
checklist that you had that client make
[313]
for you and sign off on you can say look
[315]
you didn't tell me to take any pictures
[316]
of this aunt from Australia nowhere on
[318]
this list so how was I supposed to know
[319]
that so it's there to protect you as
[321]
well at the same time it's there to help
[322]
you make sure that you get everything
[324]
that client wants that's a good thing
[326]
checklists moving on to point number
[328]
four number four is my favorite it's
[333]
meeting in person
[334]
so much of today's correspondence is
[336]
done via email text message even or over
[339]
the phone but there's nothing quite like
[341]
sitting across from a prospective client
[343]
and being able to sell yourself you're
[345]
as much of the product as the actual
[347]
images and video that you're shooting so
[349]
sell yourself show them why they want to
[351]
hire you show them that charming
[353]
personality show them that excitement
[355]
and enthusiasm for what it is that you
[357]
do that's gonna get you more bookings
[359]
been hiding behind an email meeting in
[361]
person can go so far for building your
[364]
brand and your rapport I don't know why
[366]
people don't do it enough take a coffee
[367]
shop set up camp meet some clients there
[370]
show them your work build a rapport pay
[372]
for their coffee just have a good time
[373]
kind of get that friendship rolling so
[375]
they feel comfortable trusting you with
[377]
their big day or with their huge project
[379]
or giving you money if you're younger
[381]
than them that is a huge advantage
[383]
instead of just sending off a text
[385]
message or just leaving a voicemail meet
[387]
them in person tip number five
[392]
closing out this video and closing out
[394]
this three-part series and don't worry
[396]
for everyone who is complaining about
[397]
this microphone I don't like that I can
[399]
see the mic it's okay
[400]
I changed things up all the time that's
[401]
the kind of guy I am this backgrounds
[403]
here then it's there then it says tip
[405]
number five is putting yourself out
[407]
there I remember when I started
[409]
photography and I wanted to make this a
[410]
business and I wanted to make a living I
[412]
sort of expected the work to come to me
[415]
I was like okay I'll build a website
[416]
I'll get some business cards I'll send a
[419]
few texts I'll put my stuff on Facebook
[420]
I'll start writing a blog and they'll
[422]
come people will just knock on my door
[424]
they'll just call my phone I'm like hey
[425]
this is Peter McKinnon the photographer
[427]
who just built that brand new website
[429]
and has fresh business cards I'd love to
[430]
hire you doesn't happen that way it
[432]
won't happen that way maybe once in a
[434]
blue moon but for the most part that's
[436]
probably good it's a family related
[437]
you're never gonna get just random cold
[439]
calls knocking on your door offering you
[441]
money you got to go get that work
[443]
yourself you got to put yourself out
[444]
there always have your gear with you
[446]
always let's just say it's a simple
[448]
family barbecue and you got your camera
[449]
with you you're snapping photos of the
[451]
family of the events of people smiling
[452]
and laughing and then you send them out
[454]
to the family maybe a family friend was
[456]
there or the cousin says hey these are
[458]
actually great photos and when their
[459]
friend says they need a photographer my
[461]
cousin did some great work like here's
[462]
some photos you took at our family oh
[464]
yeah we'd love him to shoot our family
[465]
barbeque boom job done secured or maybe
[468]
you're at a restaurant you're taking
[469]
some pictures of food and the owner
[470]
comes up to you and says hey I might
[472]
need some photos like what supported
[474]
what does your work look like
[475]
or better yet finding that manager and
[476]
saying hey I'm a photographer I'd love
[478]
to do food photography and I would be
[479]
interested in possibly working for you
[481]
maybe reshooting your menu or do some
[482]
social work for you for your Instagram
[484]
account putting yourself out there to
[485]
kind of generate those leads generate
[487]
that work it doesn't hurt anybody the
[489]
worst case scenario the worst thing
[491]
that's gonna happen someone's gonna say
[492]
no I don't need it I don't want it you
[494]
can either try to convince them or you
[495]
can move on to the next person but
[497]
sitting at home just because you've got
[498]
a nice Instagram profile or a nice
[500]
website doesn't mean anyone's gonna come
[502]
knocking to hire you you got to go
[504]
knocking to get those jobs when those
[506]
jobs start coming that word of mouth
[507]
starts you know snowballing into more
[510]
and more and more prospects then the
[512]
phone starts ringing but you got to put
[514]
in the legwork to get there all right
[516]
those are my five tips business mistakes
[518]
things to avoid and things to help you
[521]
build a career as a photographer
[523]
or cinematographer thank you so much
