[14]
before your wedding day but listen it's a聽 big deal because over 55 of marriages end聽聽
[22]
because of financial issues and it doesn't have to聽 be this way especially if you and your partner sit聽聽
[30]
down and discuss finances in a healthy聽 way so in this video what i want to do聽聽
[36]

[68]
this video spread in the youtube algorithm okay聽 so i'm going to make this as easy as possible聽聽
[75]
to understand because i know the tax code can聽 seem like a foreign language to some people
[86]
it's going to be easy okay i'm gonna walk you聽 through step by step with examples and by the end聽聽
[92]
of this video you're gonna clearly understand聽 how marriage will affect you at tax time聽聽
[99]
all right let's go to get started so there are聽 two ways to file a tax return when you are married聽聽
[105]
okay there is married fouling jointly and聽 married filing separately so the first big聽聽
[112]
question that you and your partner are going to聽 want to answer is are you going to foul married聽聽
[118]
separately or married jointly but of course in聽 order to answer that question we first need to聽聽
[124]
get more information to break down which option聽 we should choose right so let's continue to do聽聽
[131]
that now the first thing you need to know is that聽 the tax brackets are different if you are married聽聽
[136]
filing jointly or married filing separately聽 our editor will put up on the screen right now聽聽
[143]
the 2021 tax brackets for married filing jointly聽 in the tax brackets for married filing separately聽聽
[150]
so when you get married of course what you're聽 doing is combining your incomes and when you file聽聽
[156]
married filing jointly you're showing the irs that聽 you want to report your income together and as聽聽
[163]
you can see with these tax brackets once you get聽 married you can earn more money as a couple and聽聽
[171]
pay less taxes so we're already off to a good聽 start right like you can basically double your聽聽
[177]
income and have the exact same tax rate which聽 means together you can afford a better lifestyle聽聽
[184]
but that's not it okay because when you get聽 married you also have a higher standard deduction聽聽
[192]
so the standard deduction for married fouling聽 separately in 2021 is twelve thousand five hundred聽聽
[199]
and fifty dollars meaning if you are filing聽 separately you automatically get twelve thousand聽聽
[206]
five hundred and fifty dollars taking off of your聽 taxable income so just as a quick and easy example聽聽
[214]
if you made twelve thousand five hundred and fifty聽 dollars for the entire tax year as a single person聽聽
[220]
and then you get a standard deduction of聽 twelve thousand five hundred and fifty dollars聽聽
[224]
then you have zero taxable income and of course聽 that means you don't have to pay anything in taxes聽聽
[231]
now the standard deduction for聽 married filing jointly in 2021 is 25聽聽
[238]
100 so you get even more of a tax deduction聽 from your taxable income so for example聽聽
[245]
if you made 55 000 when you were single that would聽 give you a standard deduction of like we said聽聽
[252]
hundred and 12 dollars which makes your taxable聽 income forty two thousand four hundred and fifty聽聽
[258]
dollars also putting you in the 22 tax bracket now聽 stick with me for a second let's say that you get聽聽
[266]
married and you still earn 55 000 and you聽 marry someone who earns 40 000 but because聽聽
[273]
you're married you get a standard deduction of聽 25 100 that will make your joint taxable income聽聽
[283]
sixty nine thousand nine hundred dollars which聽 is that ninety five thousand dollars joint income聽聽
[289]
minus the twenty five thousand one hundred dollars聽 is the standard deduction for a married couple聽聽
[295]
and this is great okay because it means that聽 will put you in a 12 tax bracket so in this聽聽
[301]
example marriage will be more beneficial for you聽 because you are lowering your tax bracket thus聽聽
[308]
bringing more money home okay so hopefully聽 i didn't lose you with all of the math but聽聽
[315]
the bottom line here is that when you get married聽 because you have a higher taxable income threshold聽聽
[322]
and a higher standard deduction amount聽 marriage can actually improve your tax聽聽
[329]
outcomes which is sometimes referred to as a聽 marriage bonus but can marriage negatively affect聽聽
[337]
your taxes let's go ahead and talk about it but聽 before i do if you are enjoying this video so far聽聽
[342]
again please support us by hitting the like聽 button for the youtube algorithm also if you聽聽
[347]
know someone who is getting married then make聽 sure you share this video with them because it聽聽
[352]
will help them prepare for a successful marriage聽 okay so can marriage negatively affect your taxes聽聽
[360]
here's the thing if we look back at the tax聽 brackets you can see that the tax brackets double聽聽
[366]
between filing separately and filing jointly so聽 essentially the irs is giving you an opportunity聽聽
[372]
to join equal incomes together and stay in the聽 same tax bracket so in general the more unequal聽聽
[379]
two spouses incomes are the more likely combining聽 those joint incomes will put someone else into a聽聽
[387]
higher tax bracket and this is sometimes referred聽 to as a marriage tax penalty so for example if you聽聽
[395]
are not paying much in taxes like right now聽 like you're currently in the 12 tax bracket聽聽
[401]
but then you go out and you marry a high income聽 earner that could elevate you into a higher聽聽
[408]
tax bracket so you will need to think about聽 taxes a little bit differently okay but of course聽聽
[415]
let's be honest if you're marrying a higher聽 income earner that is usually a good thing plus聽聽
[421]
that higher income earner will benefit from聽 you in your tax bracket as well as that聽聽
[427]
standard marriage deduction that we talked about聽 a little bit earlier so overall there is a lot of聽聽
[434]
upside and tax benefits for getting married and聽 fouling jointly but again filing jointly can be聽聽
[443]
unequally yoked so it's important to have these聽 conversations before you get married so that you聽聽
[449]
and your partner especially the partner who is聽 in a lower income bracket or a lower tax bracket聽聽
[455]
understands that their tax bracket and their taxes聽 may increase and that conversation around finances聽聽
[463]
is going to be very beneficial for your marriage聽 and of course your overall lifestyle well i hope聽聽
[468]
all this made sense right now i am considering聽 making another video on when you should file聽聽
[475]
separately instead of filing jointly when you are聽 married so if you want an in-depth video on that聽聽
[480]
please tell me in the comment section below well聽 that's it for now as always guys thank you so so聽聽
[486]
much for watching for supporting and making聽 it to the very end we have some more videos聽聽
[491]
coming up next so if you haven't checked those聽 out make sure you do and i'll see you over there
