Channel: Tiny House Giant Journey

[0]
Hi, I'm Jenna with Tiny House, Giant Journey. We're here with the Raven lore,
[5]
which is Nikki's new tiny home from tiny green cabins.
[8]
Let's go take a tour.
[28]
Come on in. So this is Nikki. Hi.
[31]
And thank you so much for letting us tour your house. We know it's brand new,
[35]
so it's pretty bare bones right now. She just got it what, three days ago?
[39]
Just got it and haven't moved in yet, but I'd still love to show it to you.
[42]
Great. So how long is the tiny house?
[44]
This is 22 feet long by your standard. Eight feet wide. Right?
[48]
So you got a tiny green cabins they actually built out over the fenders,
[53]
so you get a little bit more with on the inside than most tiny homes.
[56]
And how much does it weigh again? 13,500 pounds. Right
[60]
Which is why it has four axles and we'll show you that on the outside of the
[64]
house. But some cool features to the tiny house, um, to the Raven Lord.
[68]
That's unique is that you have solar power,
[71]
which is what every tiny Houser wants, but not many have. So, um,
[75]
can you talk a little bit about the system? Um,
[78]
I don't know too much about it cause I just got up, haven't tried it out yet.
[81]
It's a 600 Watts system by Zam. Um,
[84]
I got a special on it with the house and I think it would do pretty well at
[89]
powering the fridge, the lights, things like that.
[92]
Probably not to be incinerating toilet. Right. Yeah. And we'll get to that.
[97]
Air conditioner or things like that. But it could,
[100]
it could keep you off grid comfortably if you want it to be. Right.
[103]
And I think the most unique thing about Nikki's house is the color of the house.
[107]
I mean just the overall look. So a,
[109]
what's the inspiration for the Victorian style? Well,
[112]
the Victorian style was kind of Jim Wilkins in his first design of the
[118]
Raven lore. When I saw what the house looked like with all the gingerbread trim,
[122]
I knew it had to be purple and pink and blue and green.
[126]
Cause that's what I like.
[128]
I think it's gorgeous and I think it definitely pops if,
[131]
if you'll let me say it and you know, it's eye catching.
[135]
I mean there's never going to be another tiny house that looks the same. No,
[137]
I love that it's completely ridiculous. Makes me really happy. Right. Okay.
[142]
Well let's just go ahead and start the tour.
[145]
You are sitting in what will be your or standing and what will be your sitting
[149]
space? Right? This is the living area.
[152]
This is a temporary seating, but it's not too bad. It's pretty comfy. Right.
[156]
Uh, I hope to eventually, uh,
[158]
put in maybe a projection TV with a screen that pulls down over the door. Right.
[163]
And so this is her secondary door.
[165]
We just went through the front door and would you call this the back door?
[168]
The side door?
[171]
I like that there's a second door and I like that it's all windows there,
[175]
you know, yeah, it brings in a lot of natural light.
[177]
So ideally you'd have maybe screen that comes down here and that would work as
[181]
your, you know, entertainment system. Absolutely. Great. Okay.
[185]
And then make sure you get a lot of this. Um, wood work up here.
[188]
They've put in, what did he call it? Jim Wilkins calls this the butterfly vault.
[192]
I guess that's the architectural term for this really pretty pitch in the
[196]
ceiling here. Right. The rest of the roof is,
[198]
the normal gable and expands to dormers up in the loft,
[202]
but she has this extra, um, I don't know what you call it,
[206]
a little dormer right here. I guess it's the butterfly,
[208]
an extra Gable. Yeah, an extra Gable.
[210]
But it definitely adds some architectural value to the house. It's gorgeous.
[214]
And the bump out, which I have a bump out in my tiny house,
[216]
but we use it for our sitting area and our tiny
[218]
My tiny house is not as luxurious and large as yours,
[221]
but you've decided to use it for your closet? Yes, that is my closet space.
[226]
That's all of it, right. Pretty sure with some clever organization,
[230]
I can fit my entire wardrobe in there. Oh, I'm sure you can.
[235]
You gotta do it. You know,
[236]
it's part of the big downsize and then the solar system is in the bottom and we
[241]
have a Dickinson propane heater off to the side of the closet. Yeah,
[245]
I love those. Um, that thing heats up this place really fast and I don't know,
[249]
I love the way it looks. Yeah.
[251]
we had it going on the other night and it was,
[254]
it was pretty toasty in here. It's really good.
[259]
And then this, um, this is a fold-up desk, is that correct? That's correct.
[263]
Okay.
[264]
So the usual little flap there,
[269]
that one was custom made to fit that little spot. Yeah.
[271]
With this nice angle back here. And you also have this extra shelving,
[275]
which is nice and the nice little window. Great. Then you can also use this for,
[280]
um, you know, folding your clothes after doing laundry,
[282]
which I think a lot of tiny houses don't think about. Things like that.
[286]
You know, folding your clothes on your couch,
[290]
you don't want that to happen. So you have some, um,
[293]
cool storage in the floor here.
[296]
I've got little smuggler hatches in the floor with a little bit
[299]
extra storage. Can we show how they open? We can try. Okay.
[303]
Here's a little string that you pull up
[307]
and all three of them were this size, which actually is a pretty good size.
[310]
There's a lot of storage in there and uh, I like that.
[313]
I like that little extra hidden storage for the house. Right.
[315]
I don't know what I'll put in there yet,
[317]
but I'm sure all these doors for something. Yeah.
[319]
And because I'm tiny green cabins built up over the fenders that gave her that
[324]
option to have storage underneath cause her trailer is actually a little bit
[327]
higher than mine or a lot of others. Okay.
[331]
Well these are your stairs corrector. A ladder stair,
[334]
I suppose you'd call it alternating tread. I like this. I don't,
[338]
I'm not a big fan of ladders. This is something a little more sturdy and stable than a ladder
[342]
but still doesn't take up too much space. No,
[345]
because you can see through it.
[347]
That's why it really expands the space. If this had a blocker on the back of it,
[351]
it would seem like a wall and it would close off your space.
[354]
So him leaving that open was a really good idea.
[357]
Nice and open at the top and it's got a little slide out cabinet underneath.
[360]
It just pulls straight out. And there's paint in there.
[365]
Some touch up paint for the color of the house. Perfect. Okay,
[369]
so let's talk about the kitchen. All right, you can go ahead. It's your house.
[372]
Take us through it. I think this is a really good size kitchen for a tiny house,
[376]
a little galley style kitchen, full size sink, big, huge sink.
[380]
I thought that was kind of a necessity.
[382]
I would much rather have a giant sink then have more counter space,
[385]
which I really have plenty of counter space in here. Um,
[389]
this is a combination washer, dryer.
[392]
A lot of people don't have laundry in their house. Um,
[394]
I'm really happy to have that particular amenity.
[397]
It doesn't take up too much space and it's something that I felt was a necessity
[401]
for me personally. A lot of cabinets, a lot of drawers and storage in here.
[406]
Got my cooktop, which you said you had the same one. I do.
[409]
It's a three burner propane cooktop.
[411]
Now you have a propane water heater as well on your heating is also a propane.
[414]
Correct. So you'll see on the back of Nikki's house,
[417]
she's got two big propane tanks to supply that, the propane water heater,
[421]
a little on demand heaters under the kitchen sink.
[424]
And I've got a window over each kitchen counter,
[427]
which I'm big on having lots of windows, lots of light.
[430]
So you don't feel cramped up, you know? Right. And then you have an energy star,
[434]
electric refrigerator. The refrigerator is electric and a,
[438]
is that a little freezer compartment up here?
[440]
You can tell she just moved down cause everything's still taped. Haven't done,
[444]
I guess if some day I wanted to and I didn't like it,
[447]
I could change it to propane. Yeah. If you want it to be more off-grid,
[450]
I mean you have the solar so you have the makings of it. But, um, yeah,
[454]
it's just, you know, it depends on where you're going to be.
[456]
So next up we have the bathroom. The bathroom.
[463]
a little pocket door or no, that's a barn sliding doors isn't it? Yeah.
[467]
Cause it doesn't go in, there's no pocket. It's just slides back here.
[470]
Right.
[470]
And I actually think that these save more space than a pocket door because when
[474]
you build a pocket door,
[475]
you have to have a really wide threshold to put that door inside of the wall.
[479]
Whereas if you do a barn style door,
[481]
I think it saves more space cause it can just go on the exterior of that wall.
[485]
Personally, so in,
[488]
an interesting thing about Nikki's bathroom is of course the incinerating
[492]
toilet. Um, I understand you haven't used it yet because again,
[495]
you just got the time house, but, uh,
[497]
what made you decide to go with this toilet? I don't know.
[501]
It sounds really cool. Of course, you know,
[504]
it's a waterless system and you don't have to worry about black wastewater.
[508]
It does, however, use a lot of electricity.
[510]
That's the big downside of incinerating toilets of course. Yeah. Um,
[515]
well I can't wait to hear your review of it. I haven't tried it yet.
[518]
Mixed reviews online about smells and things like that.
[521]
So I guess we'll find out. We'll find out. Right.
[524]
And you have a regular size shower in here. Um,
[528]
and a nice big mirror over a bathroom sink. Yeah. So yeah. Yeah,
[532]
right at my height. Yeah. I like, I like everything in the bathroom.
[537]
I think it's a nice sink. It's a nice shower.
[539]
It's a good size and you have plenty of room in there to get dressed,
[543]
which I think is again a big plus.
[545]
A lot of tiny houses have to get dressed in their living room.
[548]
So getting dressed in the bathroom is great.
[550]
After you get out of the shower and you have some space up there,
[553]
some storage up here.
[553]
Some shelves there and space for some more storage over here if I need it.
[558]
Well you can add some more shelving there if you want to put some of your
[561]
clothes in here.
[562]
That way you don't have to just stick to your closet in the front.
[565]
So something to consider. All right, well let's go check out the loft.
[575]
One of my favorite things in this house is the floors,
[578]
I think the floors they're beautiful. Same with in the loft as well.
[581]
What kind of floors are those? They're Hickory. Nice.
[585]
Are the walls pine or no? They're Cedar. Nice.
[591]
So I think this is a pretty good size loft area.
[595]
Even even over here, where you're not at the full ceiling height. It's,
[599]
it's not that short. Yeah. My mattress will be pretty thin,
[602]
so I don't think I'll be hitting my head too much. Maybe on this.
[607]
You can always switch that out if it's a problem. Yeah,
[609]
but that's going to be where your waist is more than your head,
[611]
so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
[613]
Got nice windows on your side that open and get a good cross breeze.
[617]
And I love this little decorative picture window in the back.
[621]
It's one of my favorite things. Victorian style. Again, it's,
[625]
it's got a nice line to it as well, you know, that would've been hard to trim.
[630]
Well this guy is like a master carpenter. Gorgeous. Yeah.
[635]
Fantastic work. Um, and he did put in a lot of outlets for you,
[638]
which is a great thing. There's a lot of, um,
[641]
lots to be said about having choices of where you're going to plug your devices.
[645]
And so I see one, two, three up here. That's great.
[649]
So one thing we forgot to mention is that you have an air conditioner in here
[653]
because you live in Savannah, Georgia.
[655]
It does get a little tropical here in the summer. Absolutely. Yeah.
[659]
That is a necessary amenity in this tiny house.
[664]
It's electric. Um,
[666]
but from what I've heard about these systems is that it puts out plenty of,
[671]
you know, cool air for you to live comfortably in a tiny home in the summer.
[675]
Yes. So you want to head outside and show us around. All right, great.
[684]
As you can see,
[685]
those bright colors are here that we were talking about earlier and I believe
[688]
you called it the gingerbread. Yeah. And those are her four, um,
[693]
solar panels on the top. What kind of roofing is that?
[697]
That is castle top metal shingles. I've never seen anything like that before.
[701]
I love the alternating colors. Yeah, that was my idea.
[704]
So it kind of looks like a tortoise shell. I hope you don't mind me,
[708]
but like a colorful, beautiful one. Okay.
[710]
And what I really love about this side of the house is facial boards and the
[714]
trim work. I mean there's just a lot of detail.
[717]
A woodwork in this tiny home. What's the wood that was used before?
[722]
This is, this is Cedar siding. Cedar siding, and then painted.
[726]
That must've been tricky to go through this little lines right there.
[728]
he added that, like I didn't,
[731]
I didn't force him to do this little bit,
[733]
but he added that himself because he thought it looked nicer. He was right.
[736]
Right. Well he did a wonderful job. How tall is your tiny house?
[740]
13 and a half. 13 and a half. So right at the legal limits. Um,
[744]
but it's beautiful. It's definitely heavy duty you can see it from this trailer for sure.
[748]
And she's got the jacks on all four sides.
[750]
So welcome to the tiny house community. Thank you. So are you excited?
[754]
Are you excited? I can't wait to get in here and start living my new life.
[757]
Exactly. Well, congratulations. Thank you.
[759]
So tune in next time for the next tiny house tour.
