How the "Amazon Effect" is Shutting Down Businesses - YouTube

hey there Jamie Davidson with amz
[1]
insiders a little bit about ourselves
[3]
myself my two fellow co-founders Jason
[6]
and Brad sold over 75 million dollars
[8]
last year on Amazon this year were
[10]
projected to do well over a hundred
[12]
million dollars and today we want to
[14]
talk to you about a question we get
[16]
which is when you hear what is the
[19]
Amazon effect so you may have heard this
[22]
may not there's a term called the Amazon
[25]
effect and you'll hear it thrown out a
[26]
lot you'll hear it in news articles all
[28]
the time and they'll usually talk about
[30]
a struggling retailer and the retail
[32]
industry totaled a traditional
[34]
brick-and-mortar business and the death
[36]
in large part of the brick and mortar
[38]
but it's not the complete death but for
[40]
in terms of traditional brick-and-mortar
[41]
retails and they usually almost every
[44]
article that's referred to they'll be
[46]
reference to the Amazon effect and the
[49]
point what the Amazon effect is is just
[51]
the impact that the growth of the Amazon
[54]
platform and the amaz Amazon as a
[56]
company has had on changing retail how
[59]
things work how consumers consumer
[62]
behavior how they acquire goods purchase
[64]
goods how we get physical products and
[66]
that's called the Amazon effect which is
[68]
ultimately tied to the financial
[70]
performance of these traditional
[72]
businesses that can't survive up against
[75]
a new model that's much more efficient
[78]
in so many ways it's actually an
[79]
understatement to say it's much more
[81]
efficient and the Amazon model what's
[83]
really unique about it is it allows
[85]
sellers to plug into the models the
[87]
majority of Amazon products product over
[89]
85% are actually sold by third-party
[91]
sellers right selling through the Amazon
[94]
platform so when you buy something from
[96]
Amazon you're typically you know if you
[98]
buy I'm in our warehouse here but if you
[103]
buy something from off of Amazon
[104]
typically you know this is not Amazon's
[107]
product this is in this case if you if
[109]
you bought this you'll be buying our
[110]
product right this is our product we're
[112]
a third party seller aunt leveraging the
[113]
Amazon platform what Amazon is doing by
[115]
creating the platform they've allowed
[117]
this economy worldwide kind of basically
[120]
to flourish an ecosystem flourish for
[122]
people to all plug in and benefit
[124]
financially this huge growth of
[125]
e-commerce and it's also rewarded the
[127]
customer to be able to get really good
[129]
products because we're all competing for
[130]
really good quality at a really great
[132]
price right
[133]
because you don't need you know all
[135]
these storefronts and brick and mortars
[136]
and teams of customer service and all
[139]
these things you do when you can just
[140]
simply order it online right you can
[143]
sell things where people can go you
[145]
point click on their computer and even
[147]
more popular right now is pointing
[149]
clicking on on their phone so they're
[151]
just simply going to their phone and
[153]
Amazon makes it incredibly easy or
[156]
either the best at this if you've been
[157]
to the Amazon app to buy something in
[159]
Amazon you can do it in like 15 seconds
[162]
go find your item click on it and
[164]
they'll be at your doorstep within two
[165]
days if not tomorrow or even maybe in a
[168]
couple hours by this evening that is the
[170]
power of amaz and that's the Amazon
[172]
effect we talked about the whole
[173]
industry and what that means you'll one
[175]
things that scares the heck out of
[176]
competitors so the really kind of
[179]
inefficient old retailers think of
[182]
companies like Kmart in the US Sears
[184]
those type of retailers those are kind
[186]
of the first to really really you know
[188]
being a lot of trouble those those
[190]
retailers are already in trouble buy
[191]
more efficient companies like the
[193]
Walmart's and targets and Lowe's and so
[195]
forth but you know really Amazon scares
[199]
the heck out of the biggest retailer so
[200]
Walmart you know which used to be big
[202]
bad Walmart that everyone was scared of
[204]
Walmart Walmart Walmart
[205]
well Walmart's very scared of Amazon and
[207]
whether they would probably not use the
[209]
word scared that definitely is one of
[211]
the appropriate descriptions of how they
[215]
think of Amazon because they know the
[217]
power of Amazon and the online space is
[219]
so powerful that it is really certainly
[221]
a threat to Walmart's existence and so
[224]
Walmart naturally is trying to compete
[225]
and that's why they mimic some of the
[227]
platforms that have with the with this
[230]
Amazon effects you know that sellers
[233]
it's so hard to compete because Amazon
[235]
so far ahead of everybody
[236]
they've just incredible opportunity
[238]
there's so many people have made lots
[240]
and lots of money and we've built a huge
[242]
ecommerce business all leveraging the
[245]
power of the technology the breadth the
[247]
marketing goes all of Amazon
[249]
I mean Amazon if you can remember way
[251]
back when if your I think was 1997
[253]
Amazon started us as a book company
[255]
Amazon was just selling books online
[257]
right and then what happened you want to
[259]
talk about the Amazon effect you know
[260]
think about borders books you know
[263]
when's the last time you've been in one
[264]
of those it doesn't exist anymore think
[266]
about music
[267]
you know back then CDs or house music
[269]
stores went out a long time ago -
[270]
similar to how iTunes crushed a lot of
[273]
that industry but the ability to buy
[274]
stuff online there's just so many
[276]
industries and stores and as Amazon's
[278]
progressed it's level the playing field
[280]
has eliminated those stores but the same
[282]
time has created so many great
[284]
opportunities for people like me and you
[286]
anyone that's interested in getting
[288]
involved in e-commerce it's allowed us
[289]
to get to step in and basically get into
[292]
the commerce space which before you know
[295]
in the past you had to be part of a
[296]
major retailer or you had to be a
[298]
mom-and-pop shop down down below but now
[301]
because of the power of Amazon really
[303]
anyone has the ability to get underway
[305]
and so again that is if you hear the
[307]
Amazon effect that's what it's talking
[309]
about
[310]
the impact of it and the Amazon effects
[312]
not going away it's only getting bigger
[313]
so you'll continue to see more and more
[315]
situations of it which can be you know
[317]
there's always kind of winners and
[318]
losers of it - there'll be there'll be
[320]
changes you know over time technology
[321]
grows so you either can be on that side
[324]
the guys are kind of getting squashed or
[325]
you can position yourself on the other
[326]
end and taking advantage of the
[328]
opportunity take advantage of the
[330]
opportunity at Amazon presents the huge
[332]
opera that's happening with e-commerce
[333]
and positioning yourself on that side of
[335]
things and learn how to sell on Amazon
[338]
learn how to have your own e-commerce
[340]
business and grow it yourself and take
[342]
advantage of this huge growth because
[343]
more and more is going to continue to
[345]
come this way so why not be on that side
[346]
of things and take advantage and build
[348]
your own e-commerce business and be part
[351]
of this incredible growth that the
[353]
Amazon effect has caused so if you like
