if you've been pulling your hair out
[1]
trying to piece together the different
[3]
bits and pieces of it see as you advance
[5]
the internet is throwing at you to
[7]
figure out what to do with your titles
[9]
and your tags this is the video for you
[11]
first I'll show you five very common
[13]
mistakes many Etsy sellers make and why
[16]
they might seriously be getting in the
[18]
way of your products getting found in NC
[20]
search then we'll look at what to do
[22]
instead and help you create the
[24]
three-step action plan to do your titles
[27]
and tags the right way let's dive in hi
[37]
I'm Deb founder of physical a membership
[39]
community for makers and handmade shop
[42]
owners just like your fantastic self and
[44]
today we're chatting it's C SEO and I
[47]
want to make clear that none of what I'm
[49]
going to explain is stuff I made up or
[51]
tricks to get you to hack the algorithm
[54]
there is no such thing these are all
[56]
facts learned directly from Etsy and
[58]
I'll make sure to quote them and to link
[60]
to further resources below that I
[62]
strongly encourage you to take a look at
[64]
as you learn more about it see su there
[66]
is a lot of misguided information
[68]
getting passed around online around Etsy
[71]
SEO and the Etsy algorithm is also
[73]
always changing so for these reasons I
[76]
think you should always fact check what
[77]
you learn rather than blindly follow a
[79]
tactic that works for one person in
[81]
isolation and that might not be right
[83]
for you or adult speaking of let's dive
[86]
straight into mistake number one the
[88]
first mistake is so widespread and so
[91]
many people will still recommend your
[93]
duties even though it's years
[95]
multiple-time said that this was not a
[97]
good strategy it's the idea that your
[99]
titles must match your tag this is not
[102]
true and if you are trying to repeat all
[104]
your keywords in your channels and in
[106]
your tags you're going to one go crazy
[108]
and two you're going to kill your
[110]
chances at getting found on Etsy yet so
[113]
many sellers do this now the reason this
[115]
mistake is being made is because of this
[117]
statement made by Etsy that has been
[119]
taken out of context and misinterpreted
[121]
by way too many people and it says the
[124]
most descriptive and relevant keywords
[126]
for your listings should appear in both
[128]
your titles and your tags okay at this
[130]
stage you're probably a bit confused Deb
[132]
you just
[133]
don't match them but then it see says if
[136]
they should appear in both barrels and
[138]
tax so which one is it and fair enough
[140]
it is a little bit confusing but the
[142]
simple answer is you should match only
[145]
the most relevant keywords or phrase in
[147]
your titles and tags but absolutely not
[150]
all of them there are two main reason
[152]
why repeating your tags in your titles
[154]
is a bad idea one it's a missed
[156]
opportunity to save space for a broader
[158]
variety of keywords and phrases and to
[160]
increase your chances at getting found
[162]
if you don't repeat all your tags in
[164]
your title then you have more space in
[166]
your title for more keywords that you
[168]
couldn't fit in before second is that
[170]
you're going to end up doing what's
[171]
called keyword stuffing your titles
[173]
meaning they will look like they've been
[174]
written to treat the algorithm or
[176]
they've been written for computer rather
[179]
than for actual shoppers actual human
[181]
being or as its he says it given that
[183]
you have 13 spaces for tags for each
[185]
listing all of the keywords that you use
[187]
as tags don't necessarily need to appear
[189]
in your title to a long title stuff with
[191]
a bunch of keywords might make it
[193]
difficult for shoppers to quickly find
[194]
the items that you're selling when the
[197]
scanning search results instead for your
[199]
Tero think about prioritizing the most
[201]
descriptive phrases and keywords so
[203]
remember you do not need to match all
[205]
your tags to your title you will still
[207]
be found in search for tags attributes
[209]
and categories that are not repeated in
[212]
your title and speaking of tags and
[214]
attribute let's take a look at mistake
[216]
number two another easy mistake to make
[218]
is forgetting that the attributes and
[220]
categories that you selected when you
[222]
created your listing act as tags so when
[225]
we think about tags and titles we often
[227]
only think about the 13 tags you can
[230]
manually peek when you create your
[231]
listing but we forget about attributes
[233]
and categories and that's a huge missed
[235]
opportunity also meaning that if you
[238]
have an item listed under the category
[240]
stud earrings you don't need to repeat
[242]
stud earrings as one of your 13 tags
[245]
it's already in there and not only that
[247]
but all the parent categories of the
[250]
subcategory stud earrings will also act
[253]
as tags for this listing so in this case
[255]
jewelry and earrings will also act as
[257]
tags for your listing you do not need to
[259]
repeat them in your 13 tags same goes
[262]
for attributes once you select your
[264]
category in your list
[266]
Etsy offers you a bunch of other options
[268]
which will look different based on the
[269]
category you picked that they will then
[271]
use to help shoppers filter the results
[274]
these are things like size material
[275]
color and all these extra attributes
[278]
also act as tax you don't need to repeat
[281]
them in your 13 tags so if you have
[284]
bronze or silver as an attribute you do
[286]
not need to repeat silver or bronze in
[288]
your tag or as it he says that search
[291]
uses your title tags categories and
[293]
attributes when trying to match
[295]
youtubers so when a buyer enters a query
[297]
we're looking at all the keywords that
[299]
you've added across those four
[301]
dimensions having the exact same phrases
[304]
that appear in your categories and
[305]
attributes is actually a missed
[307]
opportunity to maybe add an additional
[310]
tag that's unique to the item you're
[312]
selling now aren't you mistake and
[314]
number three and this one is also pretty
[316]
widespread and it's a huge missed
[318]
opportunity to use more keywords and add
[320]
variety to your keywords to be found by
[323]
more people imagine a title for a
[325]
necklace that reads sterling silver
[328]
minimalist necklace silver pine tree
[330]
necklace minimalist necklace dainty
[333]
silver pendant minimalist tree necklace
[336]
at first it sounds okay but there is a
[338]
lot of repetition in there let's
[341]
highlight all the keywords that are
[343]
repeated
[346]
and chances are the tags are also
[348]
repeating those same keywords this is
[350]
all space you could use to have more
[353]
variety and try more keywords like
[355]
nature lover a $1 Montaigne inspired I'm
[358]
making those up obviously but the point
[360]
is he will still show up for minimalist
[363]
read necklace even if you Terrell
[364]
doesn't have those exact words in this
[366]
exact order for example you would still
[368]
show up for it if your terror was
[370]
sterling silver minimalist necklace pine
[373]
tree pendant because the words are
[375]
they're just not in the exact order so
[378]
instead of repeating the same key words
[380]
multiple times in a title and in your
[383]
tags add different keywords to broaden
[386]
your reach similarly and that's mistake
[389]
number four for you you do not need to
[391]
repeat the same keyword over and over
[392]
again in your tags for example you don't
[394]
need to write boho our floral wall art
[397]
botanical wall art the key word wall art
[400]
does not need to be in your tags three
[402]
times you could instead again broaden
[404]
the possibilities of getting found by
[406]
using different keywords such as Boer
[408]
War art with tango print floral home
[411]
decor and give yourself more chances of
[413]
getting found by more people because
[416]
they are all using different search
[418]
terms
[418]
now mistake number five I don't see it
[421]
all that often anymore but I thought it
[423]
was still worth mentioning here it c is
[425]
smart and it will account for
[427]
misspelling and plural so you don't need
[430]
to add misspelling or you know the US
[432]
versus the UK variation for words like
[434]
say jewelry and you also don't need to
[436]
worry about plurals for your keywords if
[439]
someone types in I think the example is
[442]
he uses is Diaries and you have the
[445]
keyword Diary singular in it your
[448]
listing will still show up so you don't
[450]
need to waste characters space to
[453]
account for those okay so now that we've
[455]
covered the most common mistakes let's
[457]
move on to what you should do and how to
[460]
think about your tags and titles instead
[462]
there are many different factors that
[464]
come into play in the Etsy search
[466]
algorithm for HC to decide which items
[469]
will show first when someone types in a
[471]
few keywords in the search valve if you
[473]
need a refresher on exactly how the se
[476]
search algorithm works I do
[477]
have a video called the complete guide
[479]
to Etsy search that are linked below and
[481]
strongly recommend you watch before now
[484]
and for this video when it comes to
[486]
picking your taralyn tags the most
[488]
important criteria you need to keep in
[490]
mind is what's called relevancy when a
[493]
shopper types in keywords into the
[495]
search bar on Etsy Etsy compares them to
[498]
four things you terral's your tags your
[501]
categories and your attributes and then
[503]
it asked itself how relevant is this
[506]
listing to this shoppers search the more
[508]
closely your tattles tags attributes and
[511]
categories match what this shopper typed
[513]
in the search bar the more likely it is
[516]
that your item will show up higher in
[517]
the search results because it is more
[519]
relevant now practically what does this
[522]
mean it means that your listing can
[524]
match a shopper search exactly or
[526]
broadly let's look at an example imagine
[529]
your listing title is black oversized
[532]
jumper organic cotton sweater
[534]
personalized hoodie sweatshirt and
[536]
someone comes to Etsy and types in the
[538]
search a black oversized jumper you have
[541]
an exact match because this exact phrase
[543]
appears in your listing with the words
[545]
in this exact order this tells it see
[548]
your listing is pretty relevant if
[549]
someone types seen black oversized
[552]
hoodie you will still show up in search
[554]
because black oversize and hoodie are
[557]
all keywords appearing in your listing
[559]
except this time it isn't an exact match
[561]
but a broad match this means that if
[564]
another shop has black oversized hoodie
[566]
as an exact match in their listing that
[569]
listing is in the algorithm is more
[571]
relevant Daniels this doesn't mean this
[573]
listing will necessarily show up before
[575]
yours because as I said there is more
[576]
than relevancy that comes into play in
[579]
the search ranking but this is one of
[581]
the different points of that either
[582]
Etsy looks at so why is this important
[585]
because as we've seen looking at the top
[587]
five mistake just before you can't
[590]
possibly hope to be an exact match for
[593]
all your keywords and phrases because to
[596]
do that you'd have to repeat them and
[598]
essentially in your Terrell's tags
[599]
attributes and categories and as we saw
[602]
this is a missed opportunity to
[603]
diversify your keywords and to get more
[605]
reach for your listing which is exactly
[607]
what you're trying to do so instead one
[610]
peak
[611]
one or two phrases that best describe
[613]
your item in are the most relevant the
[615]
ones you must want to be found under
[617]
peak phrases that are not too broad and
[619]
not too specific here and more on that
[621]
in a second to try to aim for exact
[624]
match for those key phrases and you'll
[626]
want to repeat them in your tattle and
[629]
in your tags these are your one two to
[631]
focus keywords keyword phrases exactly
[634]
match in your title in tags and three
[636]
after that use all the room left all the
[639]
characters you've got left in your
[640]
titles and tags to add different search
[642]
terms different keywords so you have
[644]
more variety and better chances of being
[647]
found by more people
[648]
now you're probably left with one very
[651]
good question which is when I am picking
[654]
my key focus phrases or focus keywords
[657]
how do I know what's too broad and
[659]
what's too specific I have a video just
[661]
about this and the famous longtail
[663]
keywords what they are how they work how
[665]
to use them that explain this in great
[667]
details and that's coming up in the next
[669]
couple of weeks by the time you're
[671]
watching this it's probably live already
[673]
so click the Etsy SEO playlist thumbnail
[676]
that you can see somewhere on the screen
[677]
right now to watch it next I think
[680]
you'll find it super helpful if you're
[682]
watching this video as it's being
[683]
released make sure to subscribe to my
