Disney Eyeing NFL Sunday Ticket, Hallmark Channels on YouTube TV, Netflix Upgrades, and More - YouTube

Channel: Cord Cutters News

[0]
Hi folks and welcome to mid-November.
[2]
It is Friday, November 12th, 2021 and this is Cord Cutting Weekly, the show where we
[7]
wrap up the past week in cord cutting and streaming news.
[11]
And this week, we’ve got new options on YouTube TV, a price hike and more content
[15]
for Frndly TV, still more earnings reports to discuss, and more.
[19]
But first, of course, if you haven’t done so already, please do take a second to consider
[24]

[27]
Those really do help us out a ton and they’re a great way to support our channel.
[31]
And as always, for anyone that’s joining us for the first time this week, just a quick
[35]
note: For all the stories we’re about to discuss here, you’ll find links to those
[39]
stories included down below in the video description.
[42]
And those links will bring you over to our news website, Cord Cutters News dot com, where
[47]
you can stay up-to-date 24/7.
[50]
And now that we’ve laid that all out, let’s dive into the news, starting with more content
[54]
on YouTube TV.
[56]
This week, we learned that YouTube TV subscribers are getting a whole lot more Hallmark content.
[61]
The live TV streaming platform and Crown Media Family Networks have reached an agreement
[65]
that brings the Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, and Hallmark Drama to
[70]
YouTube TV’s lineup.
[72]
The announcement comes right as Hallmark ratchets up its annual holiday content push, and it’s
[76]
fair to say that’s not a coincidence.
[79]
And in case you’re wondering, no, YouTube TV has not announced any sort of price increase
[83]
associated with the addition of these new Hallmark channels.
[86]
In any case, you can check out more details in our post linked down below in the video
[90]
description.
[91]
And we’re also tracking yet another rumor in the ongoing NFL Sunday Ticket saga.
[96]
This latest report suggests Disney is showing more interest in acquiring NFL Sunday Ticket
[101]
for its own ESPN+ service.
[103]
The Sports Business Journal report suggests Disney is engaged in discussions and negotiations
[107]
with the NFL regarding those rights.
[110]
And it’s certainly not the only big name rumored to be interested in acquiring the
[114]
NFL’s out-of-market service.
[115]
We’ll of course keep a close eye on this developing story and stay tuned to Cord Cutters
[120]
News dot com for the very latest.
[123]
Next up, a quick follow-up on Netflix’s new push into the world of gaming.
[128]
So last week, we reported on the launch of Netflix Games on Android devices here in the
[132]
US.
[133]
And at the time, an iOS launch was touted for the coming weeks.
[137]
Which apparently meant “next week” — because Netflix Games is now available on iOS and
[142]
it includes the same initial collection of five games, each available individually through
[146]
the App Store.
[147]
And as with the Android launch, these games don’t include ads or in-app purchases.
[152]
And as we did with last week’s launch: For any iOS users that try out this first batch
[157]
of games, let us know what you think of the available titles so far.
[160]
Do you think the new Netflix Games effort has potential, feel free to sound off in the
[164]
comments section down below.
[167]
Speaking of Netflix, the streaming giant announced that it’s starting to roll out a new video
[171]
codec to select devices.
[173]
The new tech is known as AV1 and, among other things, it’s designed to offer higher quality
[178]
video with lower bandwidth requirements.
[181]
And that could lead to fewer drops in video quality and more reliable, consistent streaming
[185]
performance on supported devices.
[188]
Netflix shared a healthy dose of technical details regarding AV1, which we linked to
[192]
in our full post linked in the video description down below.
[196]
The AV1 codec first launched on Android back in 2020, and Netflix says more powerful hardware
[201]
is able to run the new tech via software alone.
[205]
However, less-beefy gear, like the platforms found in many smart TVs, often require dedicated
[211]
hardware help to properly support the new format.
[213]
Meanwhile, The Verge shared a roster of supported hardware, which includes certain Samsung smart
[218]
TVs, select Fire TV and Android TV devices, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro console.
[225]
Netflix says it’s working to bring AV1 to more platforms in the future, but heads up
[230]
for users on those supported devices.
[231]
You’ll hopefully be seeing more reliable and more consistent streams!
[236]
Next up, we’ve got an update for FRNDLY TV users.
[239]
The family-focused streaming platform announced that it’s adding content from the A&E portfolio
[243]
to its roster of live TV streaming.
[246]
Those additions include, naturally, A&E, but also The History Channel and Lifetime.
[250]
The trio of new channel options are set to arrive on November 18th, which means subscribers
[255]
should gain access to a large slate of incoming holiday content.
[259]
Unfortunately, the addition of these A&E channels also brings with it the service’s first-ever
[264]
price hike.
[265]
And so the price of FRNDLY TV jumps from $5.99 per month to $6.99 per month.
[271]
And you can find out more in our full post linked down below in the video description.
[275]
In Discovery+ news, the streaming service expanded its reach this week with a launch
[279]
in Latin America.
[280]
Specifically, the service rolled out in Brazil on November 9th, making it the first country
[285]
in Latin America to offer Discovery+.
[288]
In addition to content created for Discovery+ in the US and other regions, Brazil’s lineup
[293]
will include a number of locally produced titles, including a reported 40 productions
[298]
within the next couple of years.
[300]
And there are more than 150 shows currently in development.
[305]
And to commemorate the launch, Discovery+ is offering an annual plan with monthly installments
[309]
of $16.24 Real, which is a discount from the regular monthly rate of $21.90 Real per month.
[315]
Of course, you can find out more about Discovery+’s push into Latin America in our full post linked
[320]
down below.
[321]
And if you’ve given the service a shot in any of the available regions, let us know
[324]
what you think of the service and its available content in the comments section located down
[328]
below as well.
[330]
Moving on to Disney+, the streaming service has announced a new partnership with IMAX
[334]
that includes offering several Marvel movies in what’s known as Expanded Aspect Ratio
[339]
format.
[340]
That’s a closer match to the 16:9 ratio of modern widescreen TVs, and so the option
[345]
means you should see thinner black bars taking up space on your screen.
[350]
Now, the Expanded Aspect Ratio is coming to select films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
[355]
and only for certain scenes — basically in sections where the filmmakers wanted more
[359]
vertical screen real estate so that more action is visible on screen.
[363]
And, naturally, we’ve got the list of supported titles included in our full post, and they
[368]
include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which premieres on the Disney+ on November
[373]
12th, the same day this new screen format is set to roll out.
[377]
So if you’re a Marvel fan out there, keep an eye out for the new IMAX Expanded Aspect
[381]
Ratio format and feel free to let us know what you think of the update.
[385]
Does it add to the cinematic experience?
[388]
You know where to let us know!
[389]
And while we’re talking about Disney, we should certainly discuss the company’s latest
[393]
earnings reports.
[395]
And in its Q4 results, we learned that Disney+ ended the quarter with 118.1 million paid
[400]
subscribers, up from the 116 million total it reported at the end of the previous quarter.
[405]
Overall, Disney CEO Bob Chapek cited a 60 percent jump in growth year-over-year for
[410]
the two-year-old streaming service.
[412]
Elsewhere, Disney also reported Hulu with Live now has 4 million subscribers while Hulu’s
[417]
on demand side has 39.7 million users.
[420]
And, by the way, with that 4 million total, Hulu with Live keeps its spot at the top of
[424]
the live TV streaming pile, with YouTube TV in second with around 3 million users.
[430]
And of course, there’s ESPN+, the sports-focused streaming service.
[434]
And for Q4, Disney reported a total of 17.1 million subscribers, up from 14.9 million
[440]
users in the previous quarter.
[441]
During the past few months, we’ve also seen the price of ESPN+ rise from $5.99 per month
[447]
to $6.99, and Disney did note an increase in subscription revenue.
[451]
And by the way, has anyone out there recently signed up for ESPN+?
[455]
Let your fellow cord cutters and streamers out there know what you think of the service
[458]
and its content offerings in the comments section down below.
[461]
Last, but not least, we’ve got some Roku news to discuss.
[465]
We’ve reported in the past about how the company is focusing more and more effort on
[469]
securing original and exclusive content.
[472]
And this week, the company shared three more original titles heading to its free streaming
[475]
platform, The Roku Channel.
[477]
First up is the dark comedy, Bill Burr Presents Immoral Compass, starring (as you might have
[482]
guessed) Bill Burr.
[483]
That series premiered back on November 5th.
[486]
There’s also a new documentary called Ten Weeks that examines Basic Combat Training
[490]
in the US Army.
[492]
And then there’s Player vs. Player with Trevor Noah, in which the Daily Show host
[496]
engages in lengthy conversations with pro gamers, celebrities, and more all while competing
[501]
in popular video games.
[502]
And yes, in case you’re wondering, each of these shows were originally slated to appear
[507]
on the ill-fated Quibi streaming service, but they’ve since found a new home on Roku.
[512]
And if you check any of these titles out, definitely feel free to weigh in about what
[516]
you liked and disliked!
[518]
And so there you go — those were some of the top headlines from the past week and as
[521]
we often say at this point, thank you all for watching.
