[0]
right now we're headed north to newport
[2]
rhode island and a 16 000 square foot
[4]
estate the vacation home of comedy
[7]
legend jay leno
[9]
well we're in newport rhode island this
[11]
is a house called seafair the name was
[13]
here when i got here and i kept the name
[15]
i'm not one of those and i deem it
[17]
seafarer
[19]
we live in los angeles i was born in new
[21]
rochelle new york
[22]
about eight and a half nine years old we
[24]
moved to andover massachusetts
[27]
we had a great life i mean my dad was a
[29]
prize fighter as a young man and he
[30]
became a salesman
[32]
because he said being a prize fighter
[34]
even on his best day at work
[36]
he still got punched in the face
[38]
i went to emerson college in boston i
[40]
got into comedy and it was a good place
[42]
to break in and sort of learn your craft
[44]
excuse me can i have the key to the
[46]
washroom yeah it is done this big ring
[48]
and don't try to steal it
[50]
hey thank you very much
[53]
[Applause]
[55]
jay not only learned his craft some
[56]
would say he perfected it
[58]
leno the pelican faced comedian
[64]
eventually earning himself a lucrative
[66]
gig hosting nbc's tonight show for 22
[68]
seasons and the type of success that
[70]
gets somebody a house like this
[73]
i got this home about uh four years ago
[76]
my wife and i were driving past it and
[78]
my wife said look at that house that's
[80]
unbelievable that's the greatest house
[81]
i've ever seen i thought
[83]
you like it you want it she goes
[85]
no we live in california i said i don't
[87]
know let's go see her i mean how often
[89]
do you get your girl a castle you know
[91]
it's the main entrance although
[93]
the house was built in 1936 it seems
[95]
much older it seems like a house from
[97]
the early 1900s
[100]
this painting was here i bought the
[102]
house fully furnished and it was already
[103]
here
[105]
and you can't even see the numbers where
[107]
the colors went you know so that's
[108]
always a good sign you bought a good
[110]
painting when you can't see the numbers
[112]
for the different colors
[115]
so i walked in i walked around and i
[117]
said can you get the owner on the phone
[119]
and i said would you sell it as is with
[122]
all the furniture in it and just
[124]
you know salt and the salt shaker and
[126]
this ketchup in the refrigerator that's
[127]
all i need i go sure so we came up with
[129]
the price and i bought it nice fireplace
[132]
little elephants and knickknacks and all
[135]
kinds of things in here it's all nicely
[137]
done
[138]
it's not stuff i would probably buy i
[140]
would have like motorcycle engines and
[142]
everything like that in the house
[144]
so i i'm not sure what goes with where
[147]
with which one i i don't know that's why
[149]
the appraiser is here we'll find out
[153]
here to help jay find out about the
[154]
treasures included in the purchase of
[156]
his newport mansion our appraisers karen
[158]
keane and michael grogan
[160]
i'm feeling good about what might be in
[162]
there
[163]
wow
[164]
wow wow wow oh my gosh welcome welcome
[167]
you see we have the the outdoor urinal
[169]
always a very very classy item come on
[172]
inside i'll show you around thank you so
[173]
much thank you thank you
[175]
[Music]
[178]
i guess this is a foyer i know
[181]
foyer or for you what do you say i think
[182]
foyer fourier yeah four yeah i mean
[185]
we're in a very fancy house so well i'm
[187]
almost an antique myself so enjoy
[189]
yourself and feel free to poke around
[191]
thanks you guys thanks jay have fun
[193]
gosh
[194]
look at this fantastic pretty i i'm
[197]
distracted by the ocean but i'm going to
[199]
focus on the antiques
[203]
you said you're going to take it off and
[204]
see if i can learn anything from the
[206]
back let's just hold it for you yeah
[208]
sure
[210]
[Music]
[214]
those antique rocho yahoos are in the
[216]
house right now am i going to count the
[218]
silver after they leave
[219]
you bet i am
[222]
it's fitting a beach house would have a
[224]
ship model model of the revenue cutter
[227]
surprise 1815 by bill hitchcock of new
[230]
york it's very cool it's kind of like
[232]
the race car of its day on the water
[235]
auction estimate uh i would probably say
[238]
in the two to three thousand dollar
[240]
range jay leno's revenue cutter may you
[242]
know you'd put a premium on it for sure
[244]
that provenance um i would say maybe
[247]
three times that
[249]
the paintings here i mean it's a giant
[251]
painting as you walk in
[253]
i don't know 15 feet long and so i i
[255]
don't know how it's it's enormous so i'm
[257]
curious to see what the history is on
[259]
that and what that's worth
[261]
appraiser michael grogan has the answers
[263]
to all of jay leno's questions jay this
[266]
is one of my favorite paintings in your
[267]
house i mean it's absolutely spectacular
[270]
and not just because of the size which
[271]
is immense do you know this artist i do
[273]
her name is blanche camus okay she was
[276]
born in france 1884. died died in 1968
[280]
had a pretty prolific life was called a
[282]
neo-impressionist style kind of like a
[284]
revival of the impressionist style
[287]
the colors are remarkable the colors are
[289]
remarkable that it really does pop when
[291]
you walk in it totally yeah here they
[293]
are they're harvesting grapes because
[294]
they're dress is spectacular
[296]
uh you got the children in the
[298]
background
[299]
this was probably painted about 1940 or
[302]
so
[303]
just think of the cost of the frame
[305]
alone right right i mean it probably
[307]
cost you 20 000 to frame a painting like
[309]
this her auction record just two years
[312]
ago was eighty thousand dollars this is
[314]
probably worth more i think it's worth
[315]
about 100 to 150 000 at auction today if
[319]
jay leno wants to sell this painting and
[321]
it came to an auction gallery and we
[322]
could put the provenance from the jay
[324]
leno collection yeah the jay little
[326]
collection of fine art yes it could be
[328]
double it really could be that would be
[330]
dogs with big eyes playing poker that
[332]
would be
[334]
[Music]
[342]
well the number of asian items scattered
[344]
about the house i don't know
[346]
actually i know nothing about them
[350]
nice enough i've had a terrific time
[353]
touring jay's house looking at his asian
[356]
art looking at his furniture looking at
[358]
the paintings and i'm really struck by
[361]
this pair of japanese meiji bronze
[364]
elephants we're looking at one of them
[365]
right here
[366]
the castings is just terrific the large
[369]
scale and to have these rock crystal
[371]
very massive rock crystal obelisks right
[374]
on the back a pair of these at auction
[376]
today probably bring twenty to thirty
[378]
thousand dollars they're really
[379]
spectacular they'd be highly sought
[381]
after in any international auction
[384]
[Music]
[385]
jay leno's newport mansion has all the
[387]
creature comforts inside plus some
[390]
interesting creatures outside
[392]
jay we're in the garden and there's even
[395]
antiques out here right right tell me
[397]
tell me about the weather vein well i
[399]
was hoping you could tell me something
[400]
about the weather vein i i've been up on
[403]
the roof but never examined it up close
[405]
i don't know if it's a one-off if
[407]
somebody made it specifically for this
[409]
house or i don't know anything about it
[410]
i don't believe that it's a 19th century
[413]
weather veins which is most of the ones
[414]
that we see in america the antique ones
[417]
i think this is a custom made piece from
[419]
the
[420]
probably 2000 to
[423]
not very long ago you can get these
[425]
weather veins done in the 15 000 range
[429]
and then they start going up this is a
[431]
mermaid form right and she's got a shell
[434]
that she's holding which is a rarer uh
[437]
form for the 19th century we see them
[440]
much more in the 20th and 21st it just
[442]
seems to be one of those symbols that
[445]
that people love this one is
[447]
particularly beautifully made if you
[449]
look at the directionals i mean that's
[451]
always
[452]
a nice sign for the quality of a weather
[454]
vein but i would say probably in the 15
[456]
to 25 000 range to buy it new right if
[460]
you had to to have it fabricated did you
[462]
notice the peacock out on the i saw that
[465]
in 1947 the lady bought this house and
[468]
redid it after being devastated in 38.
[471]
and she had that in the garden basically
[473]
right out here
[475]
as a centerpiece then there was a huge
[477]
hurricane water came and swept it out to
[479]
sea and that was the end of that
[481]
then 10 years later she sold the house
[484]
then 20 years later she comes to visit
[486]
the new owners sometime in the 90s
[489]
and she sees the peacock out on the lawn
[491]
again and she says to them and it's hers
[494]
it's a bit battered and beat up and she
[495]
says where'd that come from they said oh
[497]
we had a huge storm one day
[499]
and the peacock just showed up on the
[500]
lawn the next day so apparently got
[502]
swept out to sea stayed out there for a
[505]
couple of decades and then was swept
[507]
back in again oh my gosh at least it
[509]
came back so that's that's good so maybe
[510]
it's maybe it's a homing uh peacock so
[513]
the peacock is a symbol of many many
[516]
things and one of the symbols is
[518]
resurrection because they lose these
[520]
tail feathers right and then they grow
[523]
back again so there's biblical
[525]
references um to the peacock so that's
[527]
kind of cool so this is sort of a
[529]
resurrection this thing left and then it
[531]
came back again kind of like my career i
[533]
work for nbc so that they're simple as a
[535]
peacock and so there you go oh wow i
[538]
mean it's a great complicated story so
[541]
any idea of its value
[543]
i have no idea i have no idea of its
[545]
value i mean i think the story makes it
[548]
valuable so i think it's more in the
[550]
providence almost than in the actual
[552]
value of the statue i think it's a
[554]
pretty cool thing yeah and i think there
[556]
is a vibrant market in garden statuary
[560]
right um maybe an auction estimate of
[563]
ten to fifteen thousand dollars
[565]
you know um and i think it would do
[567]
better than that yeah it's it's a really
[570]
pretty i love the tail right drapes down
[572]
you just don't know it's gonna run off
[574]
again you know it's like runaway bride
[575]
it's one of those things that shows up
[576]
and it disappears for decades and it
[578]
comes
[579]
[Music]
[589]
i want to back in on two things that are
[591]
painted by artists right here in newport
[593]
okay okay this is a william tross
[595]
richard
[596]
american uh artist in the late 19th
[598]
century painted mostly around newport
[601]
and all around rhode island this is a
[602]
pencil drawing probably worth about
[605]
eight to twelve hundred dollars not a
[606]
fortune but local artists right this is
[609]
different this is uh not a professional
[611]
artist it's a professional diplomat bill
[613]
mittendorf is his name he was a a
[616]
secretary of the navy under nixon and
[619]
ford okay ambassador to the european
[621]
union ambassador of the netherlands a
[623]
distinguished diplomat right he's in his
[625]
90s and he's a weekend painter oh you've
[627]
got one of his paintings and michael
[629]
jordan also played baseball yeah i got
[632]
them far yeah you like the bus ride so
[634]
it's one of those deals one of those
[635]
deals probably worth in the 500 range at
[637]
auction today it's very nice it's very
[639]
nice local newport local yeah right okay
[642]
it's nice to have something right here
[643]
at home
[646]
well i appreciate it well thank you i
[648]
mean i really wanted to talk to you
[649]
about the gilded chair oh yeah we'll
[651]
talk about that next time
[654]
thanks guys appreciate it thank you so
[656]
much thank you
[660]
god those people are nosy
[662]
geez
[678]
you
