- Do you ever wake up in the morning
[1]
and feel like doing nothing?
[2]
Do you ever just sit at your job or at school
[5]
and just wish that the day would be over?
[7]
Do you ever wish that you could be as motivated
[9]
or self disciplined as all these other people that you see
[12]
on social media, who always seem to be
[14]
accomplishing their goals?
[15]
Well, there is a very simple idea that will make you
[18]
motivated every single day, and no it's not some
[21]
little mindset like being grateful or waking up early.
[24]
This idea is real, and millionaires and athletes
[28]
and high achievers have been using it for years
[30]
to accomplish their goals, and I'm going to tell you
[32]
what it is by sharing with you a very inspirational story.
[36]
This is Dave.
[37]
Dave is an 18-year-old boy
[38]
who is in high final year of high school.
[40]
David had a pretty difficult life growing up,
[42]
where he lived with his father and his little sister.
[45]
His mother passed away of cancer from a very early age.
[48]
David's father had to work very hard in order to provide
[51]
for the family, and the only time David got to see him
[54]
was for like 15 minutes when he picked him up from school
[57]
because soon after that, he had to start his second job.
[60]
David found himself wanting to hang out with the older kids
[63]
at his school because he saw them as the father figure
[66]
that he didn't have, but unfortunately they would pressure
[69]
him to do bad things, like steal candy or steal cigarettes.
[73]
And they would encourage him to skip school
[75]
and party with them instead.
[77]
His life was slowly heading in the wrong direction.
[80]
But one night after David had been out at a party,
[83]
he came home to see two police cars in his driveway.
[86]
As David walked to his house,
[88]
he noticed that the main window was broken.
[91]
He walked inside and saw two policemen talking
[93]
to his little sister, who was crying.
[95]
"Are you David?" the policeman said.
[98]
"Yeah, what's going on here?
[99]
"Where's my dad?"
[100]
"Son, take a seat."
[102]
The officer went on to explain that two burglars
[105]
had attempted to break into their home,
[107]
and that David's father happened to be awake.
[109]
As a result of him trying to defend himself against
[112]
the burglars, one of the burglars decided to take
[115]
his father's life.
[116]
David was in complete disbelief.
[118]
The policeman's words didn't seem real.
[121]
They themselves didn't seem real.
[122]
This was literally a nightmare.
[124]
In a matter of hours, David had now become
[126]
the man of the house, and he had no family to turn to.
[130]
He had very little money, and he now had to figure out a way
[133]
to take care of himself and his little sister.
[135]
Otherwise, they would be homeless and hungry.
[138]
David was forced to drop out of school, and he immediately
[140]
took on a full-time job at the local mechanic shop
[143]
where he had been working part time.
[145]
He would be there all day and just clean the dirty car parts
[148]
and sweep the dirty floors.
[150]
After work, he would come home, buy his little sister
[153]
some cheap food, and then help her with her homework.
[156]
He then cleaned the house, paid the bills.
[158]
He was doing everything that a normal parent would do,
[161]
but after a few months, David started to run out of money.
[164]
And he could barely afford to buy food.
[166]
David tried getting a second job, but nobody really wanted
[169]
to hire some kid who looked poor, who had little
[172]
to no skills, and had no high school education.
[175]
Things were beginning to get really dark for David.
[178]
He loved his sister very much, and he just wanted her
[181]
to have the best life possible.
[183]
But right now he felt lost and alone.
[185]
One day at the mechanic shop, David went up to his boss
[188]
and asked if there was something that he could do
[190]
to earn more money, and his boss said,
[192]
"Well, I cannot pay you any more for your current job,
[195]
"but one of our mechanics just quit,
[197]
"and I'm looking for a replacement, so if you know how
[200]
"to repair cars, you could maybe do that," his boss said.
[203]
"Yeah, I have some experience," David said.
[206]
"Really, I was kind of kidding to be honest.
[209]
"You've been working here for three months,
[211]
"and you're just telling me now
[212]
"that you know how to fix cars?"
[214]
"Yeah, I don't know, I just thought that you didn't need
[217]
"a mechanic, and I needed a job,
[219]
"so I was just doing my job," David said.
[222]
"Huh, okay, well, in three weeks, I'm putting three
[225]
"potential new mechanics through a test to see who can
[228]
"repair the same broken engine the quickest,
[231]
"and I don't see why you couldn't be the fourth mechanic.
[233]
"How does that sound?"
[234]
"That sounds great, thanks."
[236]
"Okay, well, if you need to brush up
[238]
"on your mechanic skills, you can read this book.
[241]
"It's basically the all knowing guide to engine repair.
[244]
"And just so you know, this new job pays a lot more
[246]
"than your current job now."
[248]
Later in the night, after his sister was all taken care of,
[251]
David got out this massive book, and he thought to himself,
[254]
if I can memorize every single thing in this book,
[257]
maybe I can win this competition.
[259]
Getting this job meant keeping himself and his little sister
[262]
alive, and not getting the job meant being homeless
[266]
and hungry; the stakes were very high.
[268]
So for the next three weeks, David was glued to this book.
[271]
And he read every single word four to five times,
[274]
and he would close his eyes and pretend that he was
[277]
putting together the parts that he was reading about.
[280]
And he would visualize the problems to look out for
[282]
and visualize how to solve them.
[284]
Because he did not have any real car parts to practice on,
[288]
he started to pay really close attention to the car parts
[291]
that he would clean at his work.
[292]
He would focus on the feeling of the metal in between
[295]
his hands, and he would study every groove and every angle.
[298]
And he would analyze where all the parts would fit together.
[301]
Whenever David felt tired or he felt like he couldn't
[304]
work anymore, he would just look at the hollow cupboards
[307]
in his house, where there was almost no food.
[310]
And he would feel the cold air crawl up his spine
[313]
because he could not really afford heating.
[315]
But more importantly, he would look at his hungry, confused
[319]
sad little sister, who still could not really comprehend
[322]
that both her mother and her father were gone.
[324]
A hardship like that is not meant for a child.
[327]
David had no choice, for the next three weeks,
[330]
he barely slept, barely ate, barely drank.
[332]
All he did was work.
[335]
Finally, the competition day had come.
[337]
David walked into the store, and he saw
[339]
the three other mechanics, who all had their own tools,
[342]
their own towels, their own cars.
[344]
They looked very professional.
[346]
"Hey, kid, how are you feeling?" the boss said.
[348]
"Yeah, I'm okay."
[350]
"If you need to use my tools to fix the engine,
[352]
"I'll leave them here for you.
[354]
"Guys, in front of you there is an engine,
[356]
"but there is a problem with this engine,
[358]
"and all of you have the exact same problem.
[361]
"And the first person to fix the problem
[363]
"and start the engine will be hired for the new job here.
[366]
"Does this make sense?"
[367]
Everybody nodded with confidence,
[369]
while David's heart trembled.
[371]
"Okay, I'll be in my office.
[373]
"I'll come out when I hear an engine start.
[375]
"Start working right now."
[377]
The three other mechanics all started to work right away.
[380]
David could hear the tools clanking against
[383]
the cold, hard metal of the engine, and he could hear
[385]
the grunts of the other men, and he could see the sweat
[388]
coming down from their face.
[390]
But David just looked at his engine for a moment,
[392]
simply studying it.
[394]
He could still see the sections in his book
[396]
that talked about the most common problems in an engine.
[398]
So he just slowly and systematically worked his way down
[402]
the mental list.
[403]
In the corner of his eye he noticed that his boss
[406]
was staring at him.
[407]
As he worked on the engine, images of his little sister
[410]
popped into his head.
[411]
He could still remember very clearly coming home
[414]
and seeing the cop cars, and seeing the shock and fear
[417]
on his little sister's face.
[419]
She was his motivation.
[421]
After some time, David had fixed a few of the basic problems
[424]
and even some of the more advanced problems,
[427]
but for some reason it still would not start,
[429]
and he could not really figure out why.
[431]
As his hand came up to his face to wipe the sweat
[434]
off his head, he noticed that his hand was really dirty,
[437]
like really dirty, to the point of it being
[440]
a little bit strange.
[441]
He looked at where his hand was laying on the engine,
[443]
and he noticed that it was on something called
[445]
the fuel filter, then instantly he remembered a headline
[449]
in his book called Why a Clogged Fuel Filter
[452]
Will Ruin Your Car.
[453]
The filter was clogged, that's it,
[455]
that's why it's not starting, David thought to himself.
[458]
He frantically started to clean the filter,
[460]
going as fast as he could.
[461]
He could even feel a smile growing on his face
[464]
while he was doing it because he knew that once he did this
[467]
that the car would start.
[469]
Every time that his heart would beat, the smile on his face
[472]
became a little bigger and bigger.
[474]
He was about to do the impossible, but then he heard it,
[479]
the other mechanic's engine had started.
[481]
The boss came out, shook the other mechanic's hand,
[484]
and said, "Well done, come into my office
[486]
"and let's have a chat.
[488]
"David, could you please clean everything up here?"
[490]
In five short seconds, David's heart
[493]
had shattered into pieces.
[495]
As he started to clean everything up, tears filled his eyes.
[498]
All the work he put in and all the pain that he went through
[501]
was all for nothing.
[502]
What am I going to do now?
[504]
How am I going to provide for my sister?
[506]
What about the rent and the heating?
[507]
What am I going to do for the winter?
[510]
Thoughts like this were racing through David's head.
[512]
A few hours later, after the winning mechanic
[515]
had signed the contract to work there,
[517]
the boss called David into the office.
[519]
"So, I looked at your engine.
[520]
"You almost had it, eh?
[522]
"You just didn't clean the fuel filter in time."
[524]
"Yeah."
[525]
"Being fast is a really important trait as a mechanic.
[527]
"People want their cars fixed quickly."
[530]
"Yeah, I get that."
[532]
"When you said you wanted to become the fourth mechanic
[534]
"here, I actually did a little bit of research into you,
[537]
"and I read what happened to you and your family
[539]
"in the newspaper, and I'm very sorry for what happened."
[543]
David said nothing.
[544]
"David, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want you
[547]
"to be really honest with me, okay?"
[550]
"Okay."
[551]
"Did you lie to me when you said you knew how to fix cars?"
[554]
David looked down for a moment, "No."
[558]
His boss just stared at him.
[561]
(David sighs) "Yes, I lied."
[563]
"Okay, so I'm guessing you lied to me because you really
[566]
"wanted the job because of the extra money
[568]
"in order to take care of yourself and your little sister.
[571]
"Is this true?"
[573]
"Yes."
[573]
"So, your solution was to just say you knew how to fix cars
[577]
"and then luckily I gave you my book,
[579]
"and then you studied it, and then you came in here
[582]
"to compete against the real mechanics."
[585]
"Yes."
[586]
(boss laughs) "Wow, that is very bold of you,
[589]
"and really impressive that you actually managed
[591]
"to fix a car engine with little to no real experience.
[594]
"You must be a really fast learner."
[596]
"Well, I was pretty familiar with all the car parts.
[598]
"I mean, I clean them all day every day."
[600]
"And your modest, that is a really good trait."
[603]
"Sir, with all due respect, why are we talking about this?
[607]
"I lost, I saw the other mechanic sign the contract
[610]
"to work here, what's there to talk about?"
[612]
"Yes, you did technically lose, and there's no way
[615]
"I will hire a mechanic with little to no real experience."
[619]
David looked down, his heart still in pieces.
[622]
"But I'm actually here to offer you something different."
[626]
David perked up.
[627]
"I want you to be my assistant
[629]
"and work under me for a while.
[630]
"I have never seen someone learn about cars
[633]
"that fast before, so you must have some talent,
[635]
"and you certainly have the motivation to work hard
[638]
"due to your family situation.
[640]
"But you do need some guidance."
[642]
"Okay, what does this mean?"
[643]
"Well, I definitely cannot pay you a full mechanic's salary
[647]
"but it will give you a raise to help take care
[649]
"of your home situation right now.
[651]
"Just the basics like food, heating, et cetera.
[654]
"And once you become an expert and a real mechanic,
[656]
"I'll start to pay you more, but there's one condition."
[659]
"Okay, what is it?"
[661]
"You can never lie to me again about anything.
[664]
"The only reason why I'm making an exception
[666]
"for your past lie is because I know you just wanted
[669]
"to take care of your family, and I understand that.
[672]
"So, do we have a deal?"
[673]
"Yes, I will never lie again.
[675]
"I'll be the hardest worker.
[676]
"I'll do anything you want me to do."
[678]
"Okay, great, well, show up every day at 6:00 a.m.
[682]
"and be ready to work really hard."
[684]
And from that point on, David became obsessed with cars.
[687]
Whenever he was not taking care of his sister,
[689]
he would be reading books about cars.
[691]
He would talk to other mechanics, go to car conventions.
[694]
This was the thing that gave him and his little sister
[697]
a real shot at life.
[699]
After six months, David had become one of the head mechanics
[702]
at the shop, outperforming all the senior mechanics.
[705]
Then fast forward another six months, and he had become
[708]
one of the most skilled mechanics in the city
[711]
because he was so desperate and eager to learn more and more
[714]
that nobody could keep up with him.
[716]
In 1519, there was a man named Hernan Cortes,
[720]
who set out on a mission to take over an island
[722]
with 500 of his men.
[724]
When they got to the island, they faced other people
[727]
who did not want them to be there.
[728]
Cortes then ordered his men to burn the boats
[731]
that they came in on so there was no option to retreat.
[734]
The only options were either to live or to die.
[737]
Oftentimes when it comes down to life or death situations,
[741]
people discover an inner drive and new skills
[744]
that they never knew they had.
[746]
David was forced into a situation
[747]
where he had to either sink or swim.
[750]
He had to figure out a way to either provide for his family
[753]
or to be homeless and hungry, which is pretty much
[756]
like life or death.
[757]
If you are watching this video, and you have an inclination
[760]
to start your own business,
[761]
or to have a certain type of body,
[763]
you might have to implement this burn the boats concept.
[766]
Burning the boats for you could be quitting your job,
[769]
then figuring out a way to pay your bills on your own.
[771]
Or maybe it's moving out of your parents' house,
[773]
and then refusing to take financial assistance
[776]
from your parents or your friends.
[777]
Maybe it's giving your friend $5,000, and then saying to him
[781]
"If I don't have a six-pack in eight months,
[784]
"you can keep the money."
[785]
Doing this will force you to figure out a way
[788]
to become successful because failure is no longer an option.
[791]
This strategy is not for everybody though,
[793]
and you certainly need to set realistic goals,
[796]
and you need to be careful.
[797]
But some people need to do this in order to succeed.
