[1]
- [Jake] And we're back
with another episode
[3]
of "Before You Buy,"
[4]
that show we give you
some straight-up gameplay,
[6]
and of course, our first impressions
[8]
of the latest games releasing.
[10]
As usual, it's me, Jake,
[11]
and today, we're talking
about "Riders Republic,"
[14]
a game that straight up wasn't
really on our radar too much,
[18]
but we saw the early-access
event earlier in the week,
[21]
and now we got our hands on the
game, and it's a lot of fun.
[26]
It's a little messy,
[27]
but it's a blast if you
like these types of games.
[29]
I haven't been a big fan of
many Ubisoft games for a while.
[32]
"Far Cry 6" started to
kind of break that mold
[35]
when I did that "Before You Buy,"
[36]
and this one here scratches
that extreme sports itch,
[40]
it seems, way more than I was expecting.
[42]
Oh, and so you know, this
gameplay footage here
[45]
was captured on the PS5 version,
[47]
but it's also available
on all the other platforms
[50]
except for Nintendo Switch.
[52]
Now, "Riders Republic"
is an always-online,
[54]
big, crazy, extreme sports
open-world racing game
[57]
with some games-as-a-service elements.
[60]
Once you unlock stuff, you're
free to do basically anything
[64]
on an absolutely massive open-world map
[66]
that serves as kind of an amalgamation
[68]
of national parks and stuff.
[71]
You can ride downhill on mountain bikes,
[73]
blaze through the snow on
skis or on a snowboard,
[76]
fly down mountains on a wingsuit,
[78]
or race through checkpoints
with a jet pack,
[81]
kind of like "Rocketeer"-style,
[83]
or a couple of other wacky things.
[85]
Now, in a lot of ways,
[86]
it feels like Ubisoft took
what they learned from "Steep,"
[90]
a game that had a lot of fans,
but I wasn't really into it,
[94]
and "The Crew," a game
that also had its fans,
[96]
but I thought it was just okay.
[98]
Here, they took what
they learned from "Steep"
[99]
and "The Crew," too, and
they took this stuff,
[101]
and they mashed it up into
a big, crazy, fun game.
[104]
Now, there's progression,
if you're playing alone,
[106]
so you can work your way through a career.
[109]
You're winning races and
completing sub-objectives
[112]
within those races to earn stars
[114]
to unlock things in your career
and also level up a ranking.
[118]
By progressing, you're
unlocking more race types
[120]
and more challenges and stuff,
[122]
and of course, you're getting
more gear along the way.
[125]
The important gear is all the
actual stuff you're using:
[129]
snowboards and bikes and stuff.
[131]
And you're working your way
up to stuff with better stats,
[134]
like, say, a mountain bike
with more grip on the road.
[138]
You can also just explore the map
[140]
and find special points,
collectibles, races, and secrets.
[144]
You can use your gear or
fun stuff like a snowmobile
[147]
or a fan parachute or other
weird things to get around.
[151]
You can also just walk around on foot.
[153]
And all of these things,
you can swap in real time
[156]
with kind of like an equipment wheel.
[158]
There really is a lot of freedom.
[160]
Now, you're also earning cash and stuff
[163]
to buy yourself cool
outfits to express yourself:
[166]
silly masks, hats, clothing, pants.
[169]
Some of it can get pretty
ridiculous and funny,
[172]
as you probably see here.
[173]
I mostly keep it simple just
'cause I like the racing
[176]
and I don't want to get too distracted,
[177]
but hey, that's just me, I'm boring.
[179]
The game does give you the
now-typical storefront,
[182]
where you can buy in-game currency
[185]
with real-world money as well if you want.
[188]
It's all cosmetic.
[189]
The only stat increases are
through the gear you get,
[192]
like your bikes and your
snowboards and stuff,
[194]
and you can't buy that stuff,
[196]
but it's there and it's
worth pointing out.
[199]
The game also has daily
different clothing items
[202]
you can buy,
[203]
and it seems like there's
gonna be a ton of content
[205]
and races and seasons.
[206]
It's just trickling out all the time.
[208]
That's the games-as-a-service,
live-service-type stuff.
[211]
This seems like a game
[212]
where they just want you to keep playing.
[214]
There's all these other
types of little things
[215]
to grind for, too.
[217]
You can add sponsorships that
give you daily challenges
[220]
to earn more stuff.
[221]
It's kind of endless.
[222]
The game piles a lot on you,
[224]
but once you're racing
and just having fun,
[227]
you forget about all of it.
[228]
But there is a lot of
stuff to progress through
[230]
if you want it.
[231]
But at the little town center
[233]
where you get new clothing
and all that stuff,
[234]
there's also a ton of other
fun things to engage in,
[237]
like direct matchmaking for
specific types of races.
[240]
There's downhill jams,
trick attack-style stuff,
[243]
high score stuff, time attack.
[245]
You name it, it seems
like the game has it.
[247]
And it also lets you create
your own races and share stuff.
[252]
There's definitely a
decent social element here.
[254]
The world and races are always populated
[257]
with players all over the
place doing fun stuff,
[259]
and cross-play is enabled by default.
[262]
You can group up
[263]
and do some head-to-head-style
challenge stuff,
[265]
and there's seemingly a lot
of good, friendly competition.
[269]
The whole thing reminds me
[270]
of the more recent "Forza Horizon" games,
[272]
you know, the party atmosphere
with everyone racing
[274]
and the game trying to throw
as much fun stuff at you
[278]
as possible at all times.
[280]
Now, along with this party atmosphere
[282]
comes the presentation.
[283]
There's a bunch of
hey-wow-cool-dude types of people
[287]
telling you about races and
introducing you to things,
[291]
and it fades away after a while
[293]
when you're just focused
on racing and grinding,
[295]
but that stuff, this whole
presentation is corny,
[298]
and it just kind of bounces
right off of me, man.
[301]
Nobody really acts like
this and it's just awkward,
[303]
so I wish they didn't bother.
[305]
Again, that's really just
personal-opinion stuff.
[307]
I found myself wanting
[308]
to skip a lot of the cutscenes and stuff.
[310]
It's a racing game.
[311]
But all that stuff, all the progression,
[314]
the endlessly playing,
the career, whatever,
[316]
the actual gameplay
here, the core gameplay,
[318]
the racing is what left
me really impressed,
[321]
aside from a few things here and there.
[323]
I'm sorry I saved this for last,
[324]
but the gameplay is the
best part of the game
[328]
and worth the price of admission.
[330]
"Riders Republic" is ambitious.
[331]
It takes on a lot of
different styles of racing,
[334]
but they all feel pretty darn good.
[336]
There's some floaty
physics here and there,
[338]
but it's mostly for just
a tiny bit of forgiveness
[341]
to mistakes.
[342]
The different styles are executed
[344]
through the developers
seemingly keeping each one
[347]
fairly simple enough to not screw up,
[349]
but also just complicated
enough to be perfectly fun,
[353]
if that makes sense.
[354]
All of the different
styles here are fun to play
[357]
and easy to pick up, but a
bit more difficult to master.
[361]
There are two main control modes,
[362]
and there are, more importantly,
[363]
two main trick control modes.
[365]
There is a kind of auto-assist trick mode
[367]
where you can spin and do tricks,
[369]
but they will auto-rotate to
land out perfectly at the end.
[373]
Think of doing a spin in
the air in "Tony Hawk,"
[376]
where the game lines up the
straight-line landing for you.
[380]
You can use that or you
can get higher scores
[382]
and turn off the assists and
make sure you land the angle
[386]
of your tricks and spins
perfectly manually.
[389]
It takes some practice to
nail really perfect landings.
[392]
I'm pretty bad, but I still have fun.
[394]
Now, grinding on skis and
snowboards is a bit floaty,
[397]
but being able to hop
off and combo out of them
[400]
is really nice.
[401]
I appreciate stuff like that.
[402]
Wingsuiting has some
interesting momentum to it,
[404]
and the jetpack stuff is
just straight-up dumb fun.
[407]
But the bicycle stuff
is my absolute favorite.
[410]
It's the best.
[411]
It's got the best feel to it,
[412]
and drifting and sliding around
corners and hitting jumps
[415]
and hairpin turns and
trying to sprint up a hill
[417]
with that limited sprint meter,
[419]
all of it feels really, really satisfying.
[422]
For the bike races, and
really all of the races,
[424]
the sense of speed is really impressive.
[426]
The game does a really
good job of demonstrating
[429]
that you're going really fast,
[431]
and it all feels dangerous and satisfying,
[434]
and it can be pretty challenging
[436]
with the higher-level races, too.
[437]
This is what kept me playing,
the raw funness of it.
[441]
All the other stuff, I
didn't care about as much.
[444]
I just like the racing.
[445]
I also really appreciate that
there's a first-person view
[447]
you can swap to on the fly.
[449]
It's very nicely done, and
it's my preferred way to race.
[453]
It doesn't feel like a
half-assed afterthought.
[455]
Now, with that, it's not all perfect.
[457]
I mentioned the game
can be a little messy.
[460]
It can be messy, thanks to
some technical glitches.
[462]
I've gotten stuck in the environment,
[464]
I've seen a few visual glitches,
[466]
and while the game is overall
gorgeous at certain spots
[469]
with the different times of day
[470]
and little things like your skis
[472]
cutting through the snow sometimes,
[473]
or you riding and clipping
through other bikers,
[476]
here and there,
[477]
it can look a little
unfinished or a little awkward.
[479]
Some races, too, are just messy.
[481]
Some of the funnier, goof vehicles
[483]
like the rocket-powered bikes
or the rocket-powered skis
[486]
are often in races where the checkpoints
[488]
are just poorly placed
and barely seem to account
[491]
for the types of vehicle you're using.
[493]
It's awkward and killed
the fun a little bit.
[495]
There's also just a
few stinker race types,
[497]
like the delivery missions.
[499]
Along with that, there are
races where you transition
[502]
from a bike to skis or a
snowboard or a wingsuit,
[505]
all in one race, and the
transitions just feel sloppy,
[508]
and they can kind of set you
up for failure in stupid ways.
[511]
That might be me nitpicking,
[512]
but it's also worth pointing out
[514]
that the game just doesn't feel like
[515]
it ever quite figured out how
to handle if you screw up.
[519]
With all races, you're able
to do a "Forza"-style rewind
[522]
if you want,
[523]
but the racers continue
if you're rewinding time,
[526]
so that's your penalty.
[527]
Now, it makes sense,
but it just feels weird.
[529]
And sometimes, when you screw up
[531]
or slightly go off course and miss,
[533]
or you just get stuck in a barrier,
[535]
sometimes it doesn't feel good.
[536]
This, of course, comes
with the territory here.
[538]
It's extreme sports,
[540]
and the thrill is that it's narrow victory
[542]
or high-speed breakneck moments,
[544]
but the game's flow can be
awkwardly interrupted a bit
[547]
by how it handles failure.
[548]
And that might just be my
petty personal opinion.
[551]
Really, I just want to emphasize
[552]
how much fun I think this game is.
[554]
The whole like, "Hey,
what's up, gamers?" thing
[556]
can kind of be ignored,
and the amount of freedom
[559]
and types of modes you
get is truly awesome.
[563]
Playing with friends is cool.
[564]
Engaging in the mass races is cool,
[567]
where it's you and a ton of
other players in a match,
[571]
obnoxiously hurtling down a mountain,
[572]
almost "Fall Guys"-style,
together at high speeds.
[576]
I keep using the words
fun factor in this video,
[578]
and I might sound kind of
like a broken record by now,
[580]
but I think it's really important.
[582]
If you liked "Steep," you
might be happy with this game,
[585]
but if you just like "SSX:
or "Matt Hoffman's BMX"
[588]
or "Tony Hawk" or "Dave Miura"
or "X Games" or "2Xtreme"
[591]
or "Razor Scooter,"
whatever game you played,
[594]
whatever extreme sports
games you used to play,
[597]
if you like that type of
stuff, at the very least,
[599]
consider keeping "Riders
Republic" on your radar.
[602]
I'm really curious to see if
the community takes to it.
[605]
There's already some hints on social media
[606]
that some people are digging it.
[608]
I've seen some clips where people pull off
[610]
some really impressive stunts.
[612]
But it's a good starting platform here,
[614]
and I can't wait to see where it goes.
[616]
But of course, that's a "Before You Buy."
[617]
You know how this works by now.
[619]
I give you some pros, some
cons, what the game is,
[621]
and some personal opinion,
[623]
and now I want to hear
yours down in the comments.
[625]
Are you digging this game?
[626]
Did you do that four-day
trial thing a few days ago?
[628]
Did you play some of the betas?
[630]
What do you think about "Riders Republic"?
[631]
If you're on the outside looking in,
[633]
or if you're deep in the game,
definitely give us a shout.
[635]
We want to hear ya.
[636]
Now, if you liked this video,
maybe you learned something,
[638]
clicking the Like
button's all you gotta do.
[639]
It legit helps us out, so thank you.
[642]
But as always, thanks for watching,
[644]
and we'll see you guys next time.
