The Y2K Aesthetic Explained - YouTube

[3]
As we enter the new decade it's always fun to聽 look back at the past and anticipate the future.聽聽
[8]
With the 2010s finally coming to an end聽 it's interesting to note how cyclical聽聽
[12]
fashion can be and how many trends came聽 back during the last half of the decade.聽聽
[16]
I'm mostly talking about the revival of Y2K and聽 McBling. With the sudden resurgence of these two聽聽
[22]
aesthetics, and how closely in time they happen聽 from one another, it's easy to get them confused聽聽
[27]
and merge them together. But I'm here to finally聽 set the record straight. Y2K and McBling are not聽聽
[33]
the same and I'm here to talk about how they're聽 separate from one another and how they came to be.
[42]
The Y2K aesthetic got its name from聽 the computer bug of the same name.聽聽
[47]
It reached its height in the years 1997 to 2001聽 and encompasses many aspects of life like fashion,聽聽
[54]
music, and furniture. It was an era聽 that really encapsulated technology聽聽
[59]
in all things futuristic and also injected people聽 with an optimism about the upcoming millennium.
[65]
The art at this time was a mixture of 2D and 3D.聽 And with the new technology that was available聽聽
[71]
dreaming up improbable dreamscapes and coming up聽 with an idea of what the future could look like聽聽
[76]
became incredibly fun. The color palette included聽 but was not limited to: chrome, icy blue, green, white,聽聽
[85]
black, and orange. But what caused the rise of this聽 aesthetic in pop culture? Well, let's talk about it!
[96]
Tracing back the origins of an aesthetic is never聽 easy just because there's so much overlap going on.聽
[102]
However, the Y2K Institute is a really聽 good resource that really helped me out聽聽
[107]
and if you guys want to see some archived聽 pictures that's the place to find them. But,聽聽
[112]
if we're going to talk about origins we're聽 gonna have to go way back to the Y2K bug.聽聽
[117]
As the new millennium approached many computer聽 programmers around the world began to realize聽聽
[122]
that there was a huge flaw in the way computer聽 programs were written. When computers were first聽聽
[127]
being made computer engineers used a two-digit聽 code for writing years instead of four digits.聽聽
[133]
So, if the year was 1979 it was shortened to 79.聽 This saved them money and space at the time but聽聽
[140]
as the year 2000 approached they realized that聽 the computer might interpret 00 as 1900聽聽
[146]
and not 2000. This was a huge problem that they聽 thought would affect all businesses such as banks,聽聽
[153]
insurance companies, transportation, and even聽 nuclear power plants. So it's a big problem. Even聽聽
[160]
devices that contain computer chips like elevators聽 and medical equipment were thought to be at risk.聽聽
[167]
Some countries like the US spent $300 billion聽 dollars upgrading and replacing computers聽聽
[172]
around the country in the years leading up to聽 the new millennium. There was a lot of hysteria聽聽
[178]
and misinformation being spread and they even had聽 guides and books on how to deal with the problem.聽聽
[184]
Some people went as far as stocking up on food聽 and water before they rang in the new year.聽聽
[189]
And then the millennium came and went and聽 everyone's computers were fine, bringing聽聽
[193]
an anticlimactic end to the frenzy that was the聽 Y2K bug. However, this did lead to a lot of people聽聽
[199]
claiming it was a hoax by the government, but聽 that's pretty much where the name Y2K came from.聽聽
[205]
There was a lot of anxiety about the future聽 and what it might look like but there was聽聽
[209]
also this excitement as well. With the rapid聽 technological changes in the 90s we got a聽聽
[214]
lot more art and media that was technologically聽 based. The first time we truly saw a lot of this聽聽
[219]
aesthetic was around 1995-1997. The design and聽 fashion of this period was very distinctive and聽聽
[230]
very much of its era. One thing about Y2K聽 is that the style is so easily recognizable.聽聽
[237]
One way you can see this distinction is through聽 the clothes that people wore. Now there were many聽聽
[241]
different aesthetics going on in the 90s so聽 this is not reflective of how the majority of聽聽
[247]
people dressed. This is just a look at the popular聽 trends and fashions that were part of y2k culture.
[255]
So to start off with sunglasses were a big聽 fashion statement during the 90s. Throughout聽聽
[261]
the decade sunglasses definitely changed shape and聽 style according to popular movies, fashion shows, or聽聽
[267]
celebrities that made them fashionable. Towards聽 the mid to late 90s during the height of Y2K聽聽
[274]
brands like Oakley were making glasses smaller,聽 more colorful, and futuristic. Everyone from Aaliyah聽聽
[280]
to Brad Pitt while wearing these types of glasses.聽 And who could forget the, GOAT himself. Dennis Rodman?聽聽
[291]
This is kind of an offset of聽 existing fashion trends in the 90s聽聽
[295]
baggier clothing was staple in this decade and聽 wearing cargo pants was another facet of this聽聽
[300]
trend. Also making this more utilitarian and more聽 functional fits into the futuristic element of Y2K
[306]
aesthetic. So platform shoes of every kind were on聽 trend in the 90s but for this particular aesthetic聽聽
[319]
patent leather platform boots聽 were definitely a must-have!
[327]
Probably inspired by the costume design and聽 the movie The Matrix, leather, pleather, and聽聽
[332]
latex were popular materials to make clothes,聽 shoes, and handbags out of. L eather bodysuits聽聽
[338]
were popular in music videos like Britney Spears'聽 "Oops... I Did It Again" and Missy Elliot's "The Rain"
[347]
Metallic makeup and accessories聽 were popular in this area.聽聽
[350]
It definitely gave even ordinary things a聽 more otherworldly and futuristic look to them.聽聽
[358]
High Fashion definitely took inspiration from聽 all the technological changes that were happening聽聽
[363]
at the time. A staple is John Galliano's聽 Christian Dior show inspired by The Matrix.聽聽
[369]
With a total of 43 looks, the first half of the聽 looks were very reminiscent of the movie,聽聽
[374]
featuring the leather and utilitarian inspired聽 accents. And who could forget Alexander McQueen's聽聽
[380]
Givenchy Fall 1999 show which had cybernetic聽 prints, metallics, and translucent pieces.
[391]
One of the things that makes the Y2K era so聽 interesting is that it really affected the聽聽
[396]
world outside of clothing and vice versa.聽 Furniture, technology, and architecture聽聽
[401]
had its own very unique look that was聽 specific to this futuristic aesthetic.
[410]
So Blobitexture was pretty much this unique聽 style of design where they made things like聽聽
[415]
buildings more curved or rounded, very blob聽 kind of looking. This is a departure from聽聽
[421]
harsh corners and lines. And the uncommon shapes聽 made things appear more revolutionary at the time.聽聽
[428]
And this wasn't limited to buildings at all. In聽 fact, one of the things that made this style take聽聽
[433]
off was actually Apple. Before they made the iMac聽 G3 most computers were drab and beige looking.聽聽
[440]
At this point Microsoft was winning the computer聽 game by focusing on putting Windows on every聽聽
[445]
computer. So when the iMac G3 came out it was聽 considered very childlike at first. Eventually聽聽
[452]
though people resonated with the design聽 and it became a major hit for the company.聽聽
[457]
So you really saw blobs on everything聽 from buildings, computers, and furniture.聽聽
[467]
There were so many artists trying new things at聽 this time and a lot of them actually fit into the聽聽
[473]
Y2K aesthetic. One of the ways artists did this was聽 through music videos. So everyone from Aaliyah, Britney聽聽
[480]
Spears and TLC were doing Y2K inspired music聽 videos. One of the pioneers and most influential聽聽
[487]
people that inspired this change was Hype Williams.聽 He's an amazing director who did videos for Janet聽聽
[493]
Jackson, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott. His use of聽 fish eye perspective helped define the style along聽聽
[500]
with the futuristic set designs, and the synthetic聽 clothings that were metallic or latex looking.聽聽
[506]
Other notable directors that encompassed this聽 style and made some of your favorite music videos聽聽
[511]
are: Mark Romanek, Chris Cunningham, Joseph Khan,聽 and David Myers. Movies became another way of聽聽
[521]
exploring the capabilities of the internet聽 and the fascination of the future of it.聽聽
[527]
But the film that really drove this aesthetic聽 into gear was The Matrix. If you don't know it's聽聽
[532]
a science-fiction drama about a dystopian future聽 where humans are trapped in a simulated reality聽聽
[538]
so that aliens can feast on their energy聽 source. This movie really revolutionized film,聽聽
[545]
grossing over $460 million worldwide and winning聽 four academy awards. It was highly praised for聽聽
[551]
its cinematography, action sequences, costume聽 design, and is considered one of the best聽聽
[558]
science fiction movies of all time. Their wire work聽 was copied in everything from Charlie's Angels聽聽
[565]
to X-Men. And the use of slow motion and聽 spinning cameras inspired many films after it.聽聽
[572]
More movies that were released that embodied this聽 aesthetic were are mostly futuristic or campy聽聽
[578]
in tone looking at it retrospectively. Xenon: Girl聽of the 21st Century, Zoolander and Spy Kids are some more聽聽
[586]
that come to mind. They embody this futuristic tone,聽 take risks, and make great technological leaps with聽聽
[594]
their storytelling. And most of all their version聽 of the future is so much fun!
[603]
What caused the eventual decline of the Y2k aesthetic? Well, honestly, it was聽for a number of reasons. One of the biggest things聽聽
[611]
that contributed to the fall of Y2K was the burst聽 of the Dotcom Bubble. The internet changed almost聽聽
[618]
every aspect of our lives and also changed聽 how businesses evolved. During the late 90s聽聽
[624]
the internet inspired a lot of people to start聽 businesses online and investors just assumed that聽聽
[629]
if a business was online it would be a huge money聽 maker. When in fact most of these companies were聽聽
[634]
overvalued and made little to no profit at all and聽 eventually the market crashed. This was a huge loss聽聽
[642]
for people at the time and it didn't stop there聽 either. There was the election, 9/11, anthrax scares聽聽
[650]
the Iraq war, all of this culminated in the聽 ending of the optimism people had for the future.聽聽
[657]
The shift in culture was more luxury oriented聽 and nihilistic which eventually led to the聽聽
[663]
rise of the McBling aesthetic. That was聽 the final nail in the coffin for Y2K.
[672]
With fashion trends being cyclical it was only a聽 matter of time before we saw this dead aesthetic聽聽
[678]
rise back into the fold. Some people say that聽 there's been a resurgence of the y2k aesthetic聽聽
[684]
but I'm not one of those people. Well not聽 completely anyways. Do I think some elements聽聽
[689]
of the aesthetic have been taken and co-opted here聽 and there? Absolutely! But i think most people are聽聽
[695]
referring to the McBling aesthetic instead of Y2K.聽 I believe that Y2K was a product of its time. With聽聽
[702]
how fast technology was rapidly changing in front聽 of everyone's eyes and the looming millennium I聽聽
[708]
think it makes complete sense that people were聽 excited for the future. I think what makes Y2K so聽聽
[714]
distinctive is partly because of nostalgia. Looking聽 back at everything back then, everything seemed so聽聽
[720]
much simpler and more fun mostly because we were聽 younger and technology changed so rapidly there聽
[726]
wasn't much time to simply stay in that place for聽 very long. And with how the internet has improved聽聽
[731]
it's so much easier for everyone to tell millions聽 of people how much better their childhood was聽聽
[736]
than what's happening now. Regardless, I think聽 Y2K has a special place in my heart because聽聽
[742]
you can feel the creativity and optimism in its聽 art form. It's wild, and alien, and colorful and聽聽
[749]
very youthful. I definitely think it's something聽 that will be revisited even in years to come.聽聽
[756]
Thank you for watching and watch out for part two聽 where I'll be explaining the McBling aesthetic.
