hi mystery recapped here today i am
[3]
going to explain an american
[5]
biographical comedy drama film called
[8]
green book spoilers ahead watch out and
[12]
take care
[16]
the premise of the movie is set in the
[18]
year 1962
[20]
an italian-american doorman tony works
[23]
at the copacabana nightclub in the bronx
[26]
he frequently comes across rude
[27]
customers on his job but is not afraid
[30]
to throw hands when they break the
[32]
club's code one day a wealthy
[34]
businessman visits their club and
[36]
emphasizes that his hat must be kept
[39]
safe since it was a gift from his mother
[41]
tony steals the hat which makes the
[43]
businessman go ballistic on the staff
[46]
later he gives it back pretending to
[48]
have recovered it from a thief because
[50]
of the gesture he not only gets money
[52]
from the businessman but also befriends
[55]
him tony and his friends are distressed
[57]
because for the next two months the club
[59]
is being closed for renovation they have
[61]
to look for a part-time job to keep
[63]
their families fed the following day two
[66]
african-american men come to repair the
[68]
kitchen sink at tony's house since it is
[70]
the 1960s the african-american
[73]
population in the u.s is a frequent
[75]
target of racism dolores though doesn't
[77]
care about their race and is very
[79]
welcoming she even offers them water and
[82]
sees them off politely however after
[84]
they leave tony throws away the glasses
[87]
they drank from he doesn't think much of
[89]
it because such subtle but apparent
[91]
racist behavior is common in society at
[94]
this time one day while tony is still
[97]
looking for a job he gets a call from an
[99]
associate of his the person tells him
[101]
about someone named dr don shirley who
[104]
is looking for a driver the very next
[106]
day tony goes to don's place for an
[108]
interview and finds out that he is an
[110]
african-american man he has a doctorate
[113]
in psychology and music and is a world
[115]
famous pianist tony has never seen such
[118]
a luxurious lifestyle in his entire life
[121]
and to think that it all belongs to dawn
[123]
is surprising to him the pianist is
[125]
planning to go on an eight-week concert
[127]
tour through the midwest and deep south
[130]
and needs don to be his driver for the
[132]
trip if everything goes well they will
[134]
be able to return home on christmas eve
[137]
don explains the job to tony who is
[139]
unwilling to be his butler alongside his
[142]
driver don increases the pay because he
[144]
knows that he's going to face extreme
[146]
racism on the trip and tony seems like
[148]
someone who can protect him but tony
[151]
refuses and walks away later that day
[154]
the pianist calls tony's home and asks
[156]
dolores for permission to take her
[158]
husband away for two months tony agrees
[160]
to accompany him for 125 dollars a week
[164]
and remember in the 60s you could have
[166]
bought some pretty sweet nfts with that
[168]
money on the day of their departure
[170]
dolores wishes him farewell and urges
[172]
him to write letters throughout the trip
[174]
the record company rents them a nice car
[176]
and informs tony that if he misses a
[178]
show he will only get half the money
[181]
more importantly they provide him with
[182]
something called the green book it is a
[184]
tourist guide for black people in
[186]
america that consists of a list of safe
[188]
places for them to stay in the
[190]
segregated southern states tony is
[192]
surprised that something like this book
[194]
even exists the journey starts and
[197]
initially tony bores dawn with his
[199]
non-stop chatter don is also especially
[201]
annoyed because of tony's improper
[203]
grammar usage and absurd vocabulary his
[207]
habit of eating messily with his hands
[209]
and taking a leak in the middle of the
[210]
road all seem outrageous to him with his
[213]
first show dawn impresses everyone
[215]
including tony with his brilliant
[217]
performance tony immediately starts to
[219]
respect him as a musician later he is
[222]
caught gambling with the helpers while
[224]
waiting for the show to end don stops
[226]
him disappointed that he chose to come
[228]
outside when he had the option to take
[230]
the high road and stay at the party as
[232]
the journey continues tony plays
[234]
contemporary music on the radio he is
[236]
shocked to find out that don doesn't
[238]
know popular musicians like aretha
[240]
franklin since she is especially famous
[242]
among the african-american community he
[244]
is even more surprised when don reveals
[247]
that he has never had kentucky fried
[249]
chicken they stop at the original
[250]
restaurant in kentucky and tony forces
[253]
dawn to try some although he is
[254]
initially skeptical about eating with
[256]
his hands he is pleasantly surprised
[258]
upon trying the dish one day they stop
[261]
at a gas station where tony finds an
[263]
expensive jade gemstone on the ground
[265]
that seems to have fallen off a cart of
[268]
a rock seller he pockets it but is
[270]
immediately called out by dawn the
[272]
pianist asks him to go inside and pay
[274]
for the rock this instant tony whines
[276]
and groans but does it anyway
[279]
then the duo reaches the second venue
[281]
where the grand piano for dawn is not
[283]
cleaned the janitor claims that a black
[286]
person like him would have no problem
[288]
playing on such a piano the comment
[290]
makes tony furious and he punches the
[292]
man in the face the piano is then
[294]
cleaned and polished for the performance
[297]
as they head further south don is made
[299]
to stay at blacks only hotels even
[302]
though he is among his people he doesn't
[304]
seem at home one night he goes to a bar
[307]
where a bunch of racists beat him up
[309]
just for being there tony quickly rushes
[312]
to the location and threatens the thugs
[314]
claiming that he has a gun after they
[316]
narrowly escape the encounter don asks
[318]
him if he really has a gun tony replies
[321]
that he was just bluffing and the two
[323]
continue to the hotel for the next
[325]
concert they stop at a southern mansion
[327]
as usual dawn is the center of
[329]
attraction in the room and is respected
[332]
by all he is also the only
[333]
african-american man other than the
[335]
butlers but he is used to such an
[337]
environment the host even makes special
[340]
fried chicken for the main guest but
[342]
during intermission he is barred from
[344]
using the white people's bathroom the
[346]
host directs him to a tiny cubicle made
[349]
of wood outside the house refusing to be
[351]
humiliated don returns to the hotel to
[354]
go to the bathroom before going back to
[356]
the concert tony is furious at seeing
[358]
don being polite to the people who
[360]
denied him basic decency throughout the
[362]
journey tony writes letters to dolores
[365]
but they are mostly awful dawn reads
[367]
them and sees several spelling mistakes
[369]
and grammar blunders he helps tony make
[372]
them more poetic and beautiful back in
[374]
new york dolores gets the letter and
[377]
cannot help but cry because she cannot
[379]
believe tony is literate also because
[382]
it's beautiful in the following scene
[384]
the duo is walking down to their next
[385]
destination when they spot a handsome
[387]
suit displayed in the front of a store
[390]
don walks in to buy it but the owner
[392]
refuses to let him try it on before
[394]
paying because none of the other
[395]
customers are required to do the same it
[398]
is clear that the man is judging him on
[399]
the basis of his skin color tony tries
[402]
to retaliate but don stops him and
[404]
politely leaves that evening tony gets a
[407]
call from the police station calling him
[409]
in urgently he goes there to see don and
[412]
a man naked in a cell it turns out that
[415]
they were caught engaging in homosexual
[417]
intimacy tony bribes the officers to let
[419]
don go which he is not very happy about
[422]
he claims that the cops were wrong in
[423]
this situation which makes him wrong for
[425]
supporting them tony on the other hand
[428]
calls him ungrateful in the following
[430]
scene the duo is outside a hotel when
[432]
tony runs into two of his italian
[434]
friends from new york seeing that he is
[436]
working for an african-american man they
[438]
ask him to have some dignity he has even
[440]
offered a job with better pay later that
[443]
day don offers tony double the money and
[445]
promotes him to his travel manager he
[447]
speaks italian revealing that he
[449]
understood everything his friends talked
[451]
about earlier tony reveals that he was
[453]
never planning to leave him in the
[454]
middle of the concert and refuses to
[456]
accept more money don is visibly touched
[459]
by this comment on the way to their
[461]
final show in mississippi the duo is
[464]
pulled over by the local police it turns
[466]
out that in their part of town
[468]
african-american people are restricted
[470]
from being out past sundown the officer
[472]
pulls them out of the car and calls tony
[474]
a racial slur for being an italian he
[477]
loses his temper and punches the officer
[479]
eventually leading them to being
[481]
arrested don uses his rights to call
[484]
someone from the station in a short time
[486]
the police receive an angry call from
[488]
the governor they eventually have to
[490]
release don and tony because of dawn's
[492]
influence outside dawn reveals that he
[495]
called the u.s attorney general robert
[497]
kennedy tony is amazed and happy about
[500]
the experience but don doesn't feel the
[503]
same he is furious at tony since now
[505]
they'll be late for the last show he has
[508]
been called names his entire life and is
[510]
mad that tony couldn't even handle it
[512]
once the conversation turns into an
[514]
argument when tony calls don a
[516]
delusional rich man who doesn't know
[518]
anything about the struggles his own
[520]
people have to face don storms out of
[522]
the car in frustration his entire life
[525]
he has been too black for white people
[527]
too white for black people and not man
[530]
enough for being a homosexual he
[532]
expresses his frustration to don who
[534]
understands his problems and silently
[537]
apologizes that night they stay at a
[539]
hotel where tony writes yet another
[541]
letter to his wife he claims that he has
[543]
gotten the hang of it by now but don
[545]
insists on reading it in the letter tony
[548]
has described his wife as a house full
[551]
of a happy family the pianist smiles and
[554]
approves of it a few hours later they
[556]
arrive at the final concert venue in
[558]
alabama don is shown great respect when
[561]
the host lets him park his car in the
[562]
space that he calls the guest of honor
[565]
spot but right after he is taken to a
[568]
tiny closet that is his dressing room
[570]
don doesn't complain and continues
[572]
changing inside of it he then tries to
[574]
join the others in the dining room but
[576]
is denied access the host claims that
[578]
they have nothing personal against him
[580]
but it has been a tradition for the
[581]
restaurant to only allow black's
[583]
servants to walk inside the dining space
[585]
when don refuses to play unless he is
[587]
allowed to dine the host tries bribing
[590]
tony to persuade his boss tony is about
[593]
to get handsy with the man but don stops
[595]
him he gives tony the right to choose
[597]
what he should do eat somewhere else and
[599]
continue the show or ditch it all
[601]
together tony chooses the latter and
[604]
they drive off to a bar for black people
[606]
don flashes his wallet filled with money
[609]
which a couple of thugs notice he even
[611]
plays the piano with the local jazz band
[613]
and enjoys his time to the fullest when
[615]
they're about to leave tony spots the
[617]
thugs from earlier waiting behind their
[620]
car to mug them he uses his gun to fire
[622]
two shots into the air and scare them
[624]
away from behind him a shocked don
[627]
swears that he knew tony had a gun all
[629]
along the duo then begins their journey
[632]
back to new york hoping to make it by
[633]
christmas eve they drive through a
[635]
snowstorm that makes the journey even
[637]
more difficult dawn jokingly asks tony
[640]
to bring his lucky stone out because
[642]
they need it for the ride tony
[643]
shamelessly puts the stone that he stole
[646]
on the dashboard and the two laugh about
[648]
it after hours of driving non-stop tony
[651]
can no longer stay awake he gives up on
[654]
reaching home by christmas eve but don
[656]
offers to drive while he rests in the
[658]
back seat they make it to tony's
[660]
apartment just before the family dinner
[663]
tony invites dawn in but he wishes them
[665]
merry christmas and drives away dolores
[668]
and the family are pleasantly surprised
[670]
to have him back as they talk about the
[672]
trip tony's brother jokingly calls dawn
[674]
a slur but a changed tony asks him to be
[677]
more respectful hey don't you dare call
[680]
me a gobble goo a while later a knock on
[682]
the door reveals that don has returned
[685]
to join them the entire family welcomes
[687]
him wholeheartedly dolores hugs him and
[689]
thanks him for helping tony with his
[691]
letters in the last clip a picture of
[694]
real life tony is shown he continued
[696]
working at the copacabana and became the
[699]
maitre d of the club don also continued
[701]
his music career and was highly
[703]
successful they remained friends for the
[705]
rest of their lives before they both

passed away in 2013
