[0]
chad yep we're here in venice you're
[2]
homeless tell me about it
[4]
it's not too bad for me i've been
[6]
homeless most of my life so i grew up
[9]
on the street kind of know the whole
[10]
vibe how it goes
[12]
homeless in hawaii homeless in oregon
[14]
homeless here
[15]
uh that's pretty much it for
[17]
homelessness mainly in oregon hawaii in
[19]
here
[20]
but now you said you're first homeless
[22]
at nine years old
[23]
yeah what happened my mom lost her house
[27]
so we lived in a car ended up moving
[29]
down here
[30]
lived in the car here moved back lived
[33]
in a
[34]
sort of apartment there she had abusive
[37]
relationship we fled the state to hawaii
[39]
i finished sixth grade in hawaii then we
[42]
uh we had to leave the homeless shelter
[45]
so then i stayed in the car with my mom
[46]
for a week
[47]
and then i was like 11 just on my own
[50]
running around
[51]
occasionally getting beat up by pogrom
[52]
men taught me how to take a hit and
[54]
stuff like that though and how the
[55]
street works
[55]
i was 11 years old running around on the
[57]
streets by yourself
[59]
yeah that's crazy yeah no kid should
[62]
grow up like that
[63]
no a lot of bad things happen a lot of
[66]
bad things
[67]
uh yeah and then sorry it's okay i'm
[70]
stronger for it then we ended up coming
[72]
back here
[73]
being homeless here or not here to
[75]
oregon to the mainland
[77]
and then after
[80]
a little while i ended up getting in
[82]
trouble went into foster care
[84]
and then i ran from foster care when i
[86]
was about 13
[87]
and i've been on my own since then i'm
[89]
28 now
[91]
oh my gosh from nine to 28 most of it
[94]
homeless
[94]
yeah from 11 to 28. pretty much
[98]
homeless and alone yeah
[101]
and you seem happy
[105]
yeah well you learn to take it with
[107]
stride you know
[108]
it's just the way life goes i guess i
[110]
mean i don't like being homeless but
[113]
like that's what i
[114]
mainly know you know so like you've
[116]
gotten used to it
[117]
yeah making the best of it yeah a house
[119]
is okay but like
[121]
if i had a girlfriend or something it'd
[122]
be a lot better to have a house
[124]
being like a house that's just me it's
[127]
kind of boring
[128]
you just sit there like watch tv i don't
[130]
watch tv much i
[132]
well you grew up with nothing
[135]
yes right now i got shorts
[138]
a pair of pants and a jersey that's all
[141]
you own yeah
[142]
no socks no shoes no boxes i know i
[144]
tried to give you socks
[145]
you wouldn't take them because you don't
[146]
wear shoes yeah i don't have shoes
[149]
i don't want to walk around in just
[150]
socks
[152]
that that's california for sure oh yeah
[155]
i'm missing my two front teeth i got my
[156]
whole face reconstructed with the bat
[159]
and my arm broken right here oh my gosh
[161]
and how old were you
[162]
that was about three years ago on my
[164]
birthday i was blacked out
[166]
and a store clerk gave me a dirty look
[169]
came back later
[170]
still blacked out and i guess i beat him
[172]
up a few times i don't know i don't
[173]
remember
[174]
and he came out with the bat broke my
[176]
arm there there and hit me in the face
[177]
and then he kept hitting me when i was
[178]
knocked out
[179]
and then i had 95 of my face
[181]
reconstructed oh my god
[183]
yeah now when you were a kid
[187]
out on the streets a lot of abuse yeah
[191]
yeah yeah physical sexual
[195]
mental yeah i'm sorry it's okay
[198]
well i know you keep saying that and i'm
[201]
gonna keep saying that i'm sorry
[204]
grow up like no no no it sucks it's
[207]
pretty rough
[208]
uh an ex-cop i woke up and he was
[211]
jerking me off
[212]
my grandma molested me other dudes have
[214]
perved on me
[215]
and i grew up i kind of grew a defense
[218]
mechanism if i'm sleeping and you touch
[219]
me
[220]
i just swing in my sleep and then i wake
[222]
up with like a bruised elbow or
[224]
bruised hands i know someone tried
[225]
perfect on me and then i just went back
[226]
to bed and they didn't get it
[228]
didn't work right right so i built up
[230]
certain defense mechanisms
[231]
mechanisms from stuff like that it's
[233]
kind of like a ptsd thing
[234]
well that's what people don't understand
[236]
about homelessness especially somebody
[238]
like you that's
[239]
grown up outside yeah you know what i
[241]
mean here wouldn't you step
[243]
this way you're getting in the sun a
[244]
little bit yeah well that's perfect
[247]
and
[251]
you you've adapted to a life
[255]
on the streets yeah for sure and a life
[257]
of survival
[259]
yeah yeah yeah it kept me skinny i guess
[262]
in tan
[265]
hawaii in california yeah you would you
[267]
didn't get 10 in oregon
[269]
i did i did yeah yeah i did in oregon
[271]
too but i would purposely go out and tan
[273]
because i knew i was coming here and
[274]
yeah if i would have been really white
[275]
and came here it would
[276]
suck yeah that would be burnt so bad
[279]
yeah so what's your future like
[283]
my future i don't know man
[286]
if i can get a job or because i've never
[289]
really actually had a real job
[290]
being homeless my whole life i mean i
[292]
don't even have id
[293]
oh [聽__聽] i got like i told you
[297]
some lighters and then a pair of sweats
[300]
a jersey and then these shorts and
[303]
that's
[304]
that's all the stuff i got i've had less
[306]
though so
[307]
i've had just shorts and nothing else
[310]
and still survived
[311]
so i mean at least i got the jersey and
[313]
the sweats
[314]
and the lighters what would you want
[318]
people to know about children growing up
[320]
outside
[321]
don't do it it freaking sucks i mean
[324]
yeah it might make you straight minded
[326]
some things like that whatever
[327]
benefits but it's not worth it well it
[329]
wasn't by choice no
[331]
you were not homeless by choice no but
[334]
still like
[338]
help them i guess it's it's not an easy
[341]
life it's pretty rough
[342]
i got scars all over my body well where
[345]
would it be where would it
[346]
help i mean would have been to help your
[347]
mom stay
[350]
that she could have provided or
[353]
both i mean i was abused by the time i
[356]
was like
[357]
two so i mean that gave me anger
[359]
problems and stuff like that
[361]
yeah maybe even before then too so i
[363]
mean
[364]
that's what people don't unders you know
[366]
the childhood trauma
[368]
you know i i say you know lack of
[370]
affordable housing childhood trauma
[373]
you know my gosh yeah when [聽__聽] like
[375]
that happens
[376]
most people tend to run away and go do
[378]
their own thing and find out who they
[380]
are
[380]
be their own person you know what i'm
[382]
saying like
[384]
just be themselves like not be
[386]
controlled or
[388]
have things pushed on them they want to
[390]
be able to like have the
[391]
owner in control of their own life you
[394]
know like
[395]
by the time i was 11 i didn't think i'd
[397]
make it to 13. i thought i was gonna die
[399]
there's a poker man that would beat me
[401]
up and stuff and then i met this dude
[403]
that looked out for me give me hotels
[404]
and food and stuff like that
[406]
it's pretty cool he's like one of the
[407]
main father figures in my life
[409]
his name's ambassador by the way from
[410]
hawaii yeah it's a way cool dude
[413]
i never thought i was gonna live to 25
[415]
right
[416]
i'm 28 i'm still here how is that how is
[419]
that
[420]
it's crazy well you still have a long
[422]
life man i know i do
[424]
hopefully it gets better i don't know i
[427]
sleep on the beach i sleep on the grass
[429]
sleeping on the beach you get a bunch of
[430]
sand in my hair and it's really annoying
[432]
love the ocean about half you all eat
[435]
out of a trash can
[436]
so i don't starve i don't know just
[437]
gotta do what you gotta do i guess
[439]
i've been eating out of a dumpster since
[440]
i was a little kid at least i don't eat
[442]
like gross stuff like i had to then
[444]
you know but it's still like my favorite
[446]
thing it's embarrassing it sucks but
[448]
like
[448]
that or starve i literally have no money
[452]
don't really care about money yeah i
[453]
could use it but like
[454]
[Music]
[455]
if i had all the money in the world i
[457]
always just want to
[459]
do the right things and help people
[460]
start organizations that help people
[462]
help unite the you know you know other
[464]
continents so
[466]
we can do what we're supposed to do not
[467]
be divided be united with one country
[469]
suffering help that all other countries
[471]
come to help it out
[472]
you know [聽__聽] like that stuff like that
[474]
i like to think that i like to think
[475]
about and i would like to do but like
[476]
i'm just one homeless person that i got
[479]
a lot of plans
[480]
you can do it you can do it i know but i
[482]
need to become rich
[483]
how am i supposed to be rich be a model
[485]
be an actor
[486]
i guess maybe i don't know i ask myself
[489]
that all the time
[491]
right things i want to do that i don't
[492]
have the money to do
[494]
yeah so i don't know we'll see where the
[497]
future goes
[499]
i'll be alive or dead for it probably
[501]
alive i'm pretty strong
[502]
if they couldn't take me out when i'm
[504]
like 10 13 11.
[506]
then i don't think they're gonna take me
[507]
out at 28. so i'll probably be alive for
[509]
it
[511]
if you had three wishes what would they
[512]
be help unite the earth
[515]
help save the land and ocean
[519]
you know like the ecosystem all that
[522]
one more one more get people to wake up
[527]
see what they're doing every piece of
[528]
trash they throw on the ground isn't
[529]
hurting just
[530]
the earth hurting themselves get people
[532]
to be nicer and care about each other
[534]
you know world peace type stuff
[537]
great wishes thank you appreciate that
[540]
thank you very much for talking to me
[542]
yeah you have a great day god bless
[550]
[Music]
[558]
[Music]
[570]
