[11]
hi I'm Vance and welcome to repair and
[15]
replace if the pilot light in your water
[18]
heater keeps on going out or won't stay
[20]
lit and it could be a problem with the
[23]
thermal cutoff switch in this episode
[26]
I'll show you how to test and replace
[28]
the thermal switch in a standing pilot
[30]
water heater
[37]
standing pilot water heaters use a pilot
[40]
flame that burns continuously and will
[43]
ignite the main burner whenever heat is
[45]
needed
[47]
next to the pilot is the thermocouple or
[49]
thermo-pile which generates a small
[51]
electrical current when heated by the
[53]
pilot flame this produces less voltage
[56]
than a double-a battery but enough to
[59]
power the gas valve
[61]
starting in 2003 all gas water heaters
[65]
are installed with a sealed combustion
[67]
chamber and a flammable vapor ignition
[70]
resistant device or FV IR this protects
[74]
against overheating and the uncontrolled
[76]
combustion of paint fumes gasoline and
[79]
other flammable vapors in a standing
[82]
pilot water heater this device is a
[85]
thermal cutoff switch or TCO if the
[89]
temperature in the combustion chamber
[90]
gets too high in the switch will trip
[93]
and cut power to the valve additionally
[96]
if the switch is faulty then will also
[98]
prevent the pilot from staying lit to
[103]
begin you'll need a multimeter and a
[106]
screw driver or nut driver
[110]
always be smart when working with gas if
[112]
you notice a strong gas odor at any
[115]
point then shut off the gas ventilate
[118]
the area and immediately call a
[121]
technician
[127]
first turn off the gas supply the handle
[131]
should be perpendicular to the pipe
[135]
the bottom cover
[138]
set the thermostat control to the pilot
[140]
position
[142]
set the control valve to the off
[144]
position
[152]
if the thermal switch has a button then
[155]
it's likely resettable simply press the
[158]
button to reset the switch
[161]
Thermal switches have a reset button
[163]
some will reset automatically and some
[167]
water heaters will use a one time fuse
[170]
regardless you can test the switch for
[172]
continuity to see if a continuous
[174]
electrical signal can pass through it
[177]
first set the multimeter to the ohms
[180]
setting
[183]
disconnect the wires to the switch
[187]
place the probes on the terminals
[192]
multimeter reads Oh L or open-loop then
[195]
there's no continuity and a switch
[197]
should be replaced
[200]
now if the switch has continuity that
[203]
it's best to test the thermocouple or
[205]
thermal pile you can see more in the
[208]
videos linked in the description
[215]
you
[217]
first unscrew and remove the thermal
[220]
switch
[226]
align the new switch
[229]
and tighten the screws
[235]
now reconnect the wires
[245]
first turn on the gas
[248]
to the water heater
[252]
now we like the pilot
[258]
now set the gas control to the on
[261]
position
[263]
next set the control to the desired heat
[266]
setting
[270]
the main burner should fire up
[273]
finally replace the door cover
[281]
helped you get your water heater working
