[1]
question is credit karma accurate

[5]
my own credit and show you how
[7]
it's increased by over 100 points by
[9]

[10]
and then lastly i'm going to share my
[12]
experience utilizing
[13]
experian boost you just gotta get
[16]
started
[18]
welcome to my channel i'm harlan d white

[21]
and minimizing the if only
[23]
regrets with money on my channel i'm
[25]

[26]

[28]
dollars in debt
[29]
and so each week i'll be providing
[30]
updates as well as sharing
[32]
insights on a variety of personal
[34]
finance topics that i'm learning about
[36]
on the way
[37]
topics such as zero-based budgeting
[39]
emergency funds
[40]
how to negotiate your collections today
[43]
we're talking about
[44]
credit so if that's of interest to you
[46]
definitely make sure you
[47]
hit that subscribe and notifications
[49]
bell my inspiration for today's video is
[52]
actually i was watching one of angie's
[53]
videos
[54]
a month or so ago and he was talking
[56]
about his 800 credit score
[58]
and made a caveat that it came from
[60]
credit karma
[61]
and how some people may try to discount
[63]
it which caused me to want to look into
[65]
why that's the case and so
[66]
here we are today what is credit karma
[68]
well credit karma is a free credit
[70]
monitoring service where in exchange for
[72]
giving you a free credit score
[74]
they're able to use your information to
[76]
sell targeted advertisements
[78]
to other companies so let's start off
[80]
with where do your credit scores come
[81]
from
[82]
well they come from your credit history
[83]
which are maintained by the three
[85]
different credit bureaus
[87]
transunion equifax and experian and
[90]
right off the bat the first of two
[91]
considerations comes to mind
[93]
when looking to answer the question is
[95]
credit karma accurate
[96]
because credit karma only uses two of
[98]
the three credit bureaus
[100]
they utilize transunion and equifax the
[103]
issue with this is that not all
[104]
lenders report to all three credit
[106]
bureaus and like in my case you may have
[108]
items on one credit report that don't
[110]
show up on the other credit reports
[112]
and therefore if you're just looking at
[114]
your credit karma the information that
[116]
you have
[116]
would be incomplete the second
[118]
consideration to think about when
[120]
looking to answer the question is credit
[121]
karma accurate
[122]
is what is your purpose for utilizing
[125]
credit karma
[126]
something that i never thought about is
[127]
that potentially each of us could have
[129]
hundreds if not thousands of different
[131]
credit scores
[132]
according to veronica herrera director
[135]
of product solution at experian
[136]
there are hundreds of different scoring
[138]
models used by lenders
[140]
and there are thousands of more custom
[142]
scores the two most popular credit
[144]
scoring models are
[145]
fico and vanish score who both use 300
[149]
to 850 scoring ranges
[151]
however there's a number of variations
[153]
for both scoring models
[154]
now starting with vanish score it was
[156]
actually developed by the three credit
[158]
bureaus transunion
[160]
equifax and experian in 2006 to compete
[163]
with fico
[164]
the two most recent versions of vanished
[166]
score is vantage score 3.0 which was
[168]
developed in 2013
[170]
and that's also the version that credit
[172]
karma uses along with a number of other
[174]
companies out there
[176]
and then there's vantage score 4.0 which
[178]
was developed in 2017
[181]
which is currently still less popular
[183]
than the 3.0 version
[185]
whereas fico was first developed in 1989
[188]
and fico also has a number of different
[191]
versions the two latest being
[192]
fico number eight and fico number nine
[195]
and according to
[196]
credit scoring website myfico fico is
[199]
used by
[200]
more than 90 percent of the top lenders
[203]
so although through the years
[204]
vanish score is becoming more popular as
[207]
detailed in
[208]
oliver wyman's 2019 study where he saw
[212]
a 20 year-over-year increase from 2018
[214]
to 2019
[216]
with the used advantage score it's still
[218]
not the industry standard
[220]
and there's also a number of other
[221]
differences between fico and vantage
[223]
score
[224]
such as how they weight things in your
[226]
credit report
[227]
for example fico weights your payment
[230]
history at 35
[232]
whereas vantage score awaits your
[234]
payment history at 40 percent
[236]
they also have different scoring ranges
[237]
where uh 661 may be good
[240]
in vantage score or 661 is considered
[243]
fair in fico and even how they handle
[246]
collections is going to be very
[247]
different
[248]
you know either whether or not they
[249]
discount medical debt or whether or not
[252]
they look at
[252]
things under 100 is really going to be
[255]
dependent on which credit score that
[256]
you're looking at
[257]
so to answer the question is credit
[258]
karma accurate
[260]
yes it's accurate however because they
[263]
utilize
[264]
vanish score they are not using the
[266]
industry standard
[268]
when it comes to scoring models and also
[271]
it's going to be really heavily
[272]
dependent on what is your use
[275]
of credit karma because if you're using
[277]
that score to base
[278]
what you may qualify for let's say an
[280]
example a mortgage loan
[282]
you probably want to make sure that you
[284]
pull your fico
[286]
as well just to make sure you're not
[288]
caught off guard however
[289]
credit card can still be a very useful
[291]
tool for monitoring your credit
[293]
to make sure that nothing shows up on
[295]
your credit that shouldn't be there
[296]
and also to track the trajectory of
[299]
whether or not your credit is going up
[301]
or down credit karma can still be a good
[304]
good indication of that
[306]
and one of the things i like to do as
[307]
well is to also use the experian app
[310]
and supplement the credit karma that way
[312]
i can see information
[314]
from all three credit bureaus all right
[316]
so next part of this video i do want to
[318]
jump into
[319]
giving a credit update if you have not
[321]
seen any of my other credit updates
[323]
i will warn you right off the bat that
[324]
my credit is not very good
[326]
in fact before i started posting my
[328]
youtube videos to my facebook
[330]
i had to give myself a heart to heart i
[332]
was like harlan
[334]
you are not your credit score you
[337]
are not your debt and for the most part
[339]
it's true right i can't change anything
[340]
i did in the past however
[342]
i can influence the future by doing what
[345]
i need to do each and every single week
[347]
to move forward all right so let's jump
[349]
into the details
[350]
so since i started tracking my credit
[353]
late
[354]
march early april my
[357]
transunion has increased by 112 points
[360]
my equifax has increased by 105 points
[363]
and my experience has increased by 58
[366]
points
[367]
the interesting thing about that is that
[369]
my higher scores
[371]
are for my advantage score versus the
[373]
experian which is a fico score
[375]
so my transunion score is 637 my equifax
[379]
score is 637
[381]
and my experience score is 569.
[384]
however as i was looking at this in
[386]
preparation for this video i did notice
[388]
that my experian
[390]
still had a collections account on that
[392]
credit report
[393]
that had already been removed my other
[395]
two credit reports
[396]
so just last week i placed a dispute to
[399]
get that removed
[400]
and so once that's removed i'll see
[402]
whether or not
[403]
the fico score comes anywhere close to
[406]
the vantage scores
[407]
all right and so to give you example on
[409]
how my score has been increasing over
[410]
the last month and a half or so
[412]
i'm going to just focus on the
[414]
transunion and quickly run you through
[415]
the numbers
[416]
so august 13th my transunion was 553
[421]
and it it had increased at that point by
[423]
six
[424]
points because on my credit report i can
[427]
see that
[428]
my credit card number one was settled on
[430]
my account
[431]
so the cool thing about credit karma is
[433]
that it will show you
[435]
notes as far as why your credit score
[438]
increased
[438]
and then on august 28th my transunion
[440]
score increased by 39 points
[443]
and that's because credit card number
[445]
one was removed
[447]
from my credit report my installment
[449]
loan was settled on my credit report
[452]
my credit card number four showed a
[455]
balance reduction on my credit report
[457]
and because of those those factors it
[459]
increased by 39 points
[461]
and if you jump to september 20th my
[463]
score increased by another 38 points and
[465]
that was because my credit card number
[467]
four
[467]
had settled and lastly jumped to
[469]
september 26 my score increased by
[471]
another three points
[472]
and that was because i reduced credit
[474]
card number three by five hundred
[476]
dollars
[476]
all right so the last topic i want to
[478]
hit before giving a very quick update on
[480]
my where i'm at on my debt free journey
[482]
is my experience utilizing experian
[484]
boost
[485]
if you don't know experian is the only
[487]
one of the three credit bureaus
[489]
that allows you to put non-traditional
[492]
information
[492]
in your credit history and so basically
[495]
the way that it works you go onto the
[497]
experian app or the experian website
[499]
and there's a section around the
[500]
experian boost you click it and it gives
[503]
you an option to
[504]
add an account so a checking account or
[507]
credit card account
[509]
and once you add that account experian
[511]
searches through that account and looks
[513]
to identify
[514]
either utility bills or telecom bills
[517]
and if they're able to find accounts
[519]
that have at least
[520]
three consecutive months of payments
[522]
then they will ask you whether or not
[524]
you want to add that account to experian
[526]
boost
[527]
so for me i had two accounts that came
[529]
up and that was my
[530]
one of my utilities accounts and also my
[533]
cell phone account
[534]
and since i recently moved i decided not
[536]
to add that
[537]
utility account to my experian boost
[540]
however i did add my cell phone bill
[542]
to my experian boost and right off the
[544]
bat my
[545]
experian credit score jumped by 21
[547]
points
[548]
and then last week i was going back into
[550]
my experience and looking at it
[552]
and that's when i noticed that there was
[553]
something still on my experian that was
[556]
not on my other two
[557]
credit reports and so i decided to go
[560]
ahead and add the utility accounts just
[562]
to see what would happen
[564]
and so i went ahead and added the
[566]
utility account as well
[567]
and my score increased by another 22
[569]
points so now i'm waiting to see what
[571]
happens once the
[572]
utility account drops off and whether or
[574]
not my credit score will drop back down
[576]
but i definitely want to share this
[577]
information because the experian boost
[579]
at least in my case maybe it's just
[581]
because i have poor credit
[582]
it actually did work and so it was
[585]
pretty
[585]
simple and straightforward and so if
[587]
you're looking to increase your experian
[589]
credit score that's one option and
[591]
lastly real quick i'm going to provide
[593]
an update on where i'm at in my debt
[594]
free journey
[596]
i have not made any payments since my
[597]
last video so
[599]
my current outstanding debt is twenty
[601]
eight thousand six hundred and seventeen
[603]
dollars
[604]
and the total amount that i've reduced
[605]
my debt by since may of 2020
[608]
is twenty one thousand fifty two dollars
[610]
until next time
