[8]
Hello everyone, it's Aunt Frenita.
[11]
And we're studying Lesson Thirteen.
[14]
"Lessons From A Worm"
[20]
The message for this week is: I am happy when others join God’s family.
[27]
The memory verse is from First John, chapter 3, verse 1.
[33]
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
[43]
"What’s wrong?”
[45]
Mom wanted to know, looking at Caitlin’s face as she and her brother Jeremy climbed into the car.
[52]
“I got a horrible grade on my spelling test again!"
[57]
"And you said you were going to punish me if I got another bad grade in spelling."
[62]
Caitlin sighed.
[64]
Jeremy grinned to himself.
[67]
He remembered when Mom had grounded him for not studying his spelling.
[72]
“I’m sorry, Caitlin!” Mom said sympathetically.
[76]
“I’ll help you study your words after supper.”
[80]
Jeremy began to feel hot and angry.
[84]
Why wasn’t Mom going to punish Caitlin like she’d said she would?
[89]
Jonah was feeling much like Jeremy. Let’s look in on him:
[94]
Jonah’s face grew red. He gritted his teeth.
[99]
God hadn’t destroyed the people he didn’t like.
[103]
God was not going to destroy the city of Nineveh after all!
[107]
Jonah was so mad!
[110]
“I knew You would act like this!” Jonah fussed at God.
[115]
“That’s why I tried to run away to Tarshish!"
[118]
"You are a loving and merciful God. You are patient and kind."
[123]
"I knew You would not destroy these terrible people! Just go ahead and kill me!"
[129]
Jonah shouted.
[131]
“It would be better if I died since nothing I predicted is going to happen!”
[136]
The Lord answered Jonah,
[139]
“Is it right for you to be angry like this?”
[142]
Maybe something will happen to Nineveh after all, Jonah thought.
[148]
He decided to walk out to where he could look down on the city and watch.
[153]
It was very hot up on the hillside.
[156]
Jonah made a little shelter with tree branches to protect himself from the sun.
[161]
Then he sat down and waited.
[164]
Then the most unusual thing began to happen.
[168]
God made a vine with big green leaves to grow beside Jonah’s shelter
[175]
Jonah stared at the plant. He had never seen anything like it!
[180]
He had never seen anything grow so fast!
[183]
Up and up and up it went.
[187]
The stem grew longer and thicker.
[189]
Big leaves appeared and uncurled one after another.
[194]
The vine climbed all over Jonah’s little shelter.
[198]
It made a wonderfully shady place to sit.
[202]
Jonah smiled to himself.
[204]
It was nice not to be baking in the sun!
[207]
He was very pleased with the plant.
[210]
Jonah spent the whole night in his little shelter.
[214]
Early the next morning, God prepared a worm that ate right through the stem of Jonah’s plant!
[221]
Of course, the plant died, and it shriveled up.
[225]
It could no longer protect Jonah from the sun’s rays.
[229]
The day got hotter and hotter, and God sent a scorching wind to blow on Jonah.
[235]
The wind blew and blew, and the sun beat down.
[241]
Jonah was miserable and angry.
[245]
“It would be better to die than endure this!” he exclaimed.
[252]
Then God spoke to Jonah. “Is it right for you to be angry because the plant died?”
[259]
“Yes!” Jonah shouted.
[261]
“You feel sorry about the vine, but you did nothing to make it grow."
[266]
"And a plant doesn’t live very long anyway,” God said.
[271]
“Nineveh has many people living there, plus all the animals."
[276]
"I made them all, and I love them."
[279]
"Don’t I have more reason to feel sorry for them than you do to feel sorry for the vine that died?”
[286]
Jonah was confused.
[288]
He didn’t understand why God spared the people of Nineveh.
[292]
But he knew about God’s love and mercy.
[296]
Years later, Jesus spoke of the work Jonah had done.
[301]
This story shows us how loving and patient our God is.
[306]
He wants us to follow His example—
[309]
to be loving, kind, and patient to the people around us.
[314]
He wants us to be happy when others join His family.
