[5]
it's no secret covet 19 has changed the
[7]
way we do things
[8]
for many of us that includes how we
[10]
deposit checks
[11]
during this pandemic millions of
[13]
americans switched over to mobile
[15]
banking
[15]
because it's incredibly convenient but
[17]
tonight our bob segall shares the dark
[19]
side of mobile banking
[21]
that many people don't discover until
[23]
it's too late
[26]
rob fein and harold wilson have never
[28]
met but they have a lot in common
[30]
both own small businesses both are
[32]
victims of check fraud
[34]
they're stealing the checks out of the
[35]
mailbox it's actually just
[37]
theft and both are out a lot of money
[40]
four checks was 12 thousand dollars
[43]
three checks for a total of twenty one
[44]
thousand dollars we lost
[46]
these are the checks rob is talking
[48]
about he says
[49]
after they were mailed someone stole
[51]
them and changed the names
[53]
instead of going to vendors the checks
[55]
went to michael king
[57]
martjuan roe williams and hannah ivy
[60]
who are those people i have no idea how
[62]
to answer that question
[63]
and look at that check the altered name
[66]
and address were literally
[67]
cut and pasted onto the document and yet
[70]
a bank
[71]
still cashed it i mean as far as con
[73]
jobs go
[74]
this isn't even a good one it's
[75]
ridiculous i don't know how
[77]
it ever got past anyone these are the
[79]
first four
[80]
the checks stolen from harold's company
[83]
were doctored and completely
[84]
forged according to the office manager
[87]
the address and all has been changed not
[89]
the way ours is
[90]
actually laid out and they put in their
[92]
own name and signed
[94]
four different names here four different
[96]
people signed these checks the amounts
[97]
are whatever they chose to try to get
[99]
out of our account
[100]
they made their own checks just by
[102]
getting information off of our checks
[104]
it happened last summer and just a few
[106]
weeks ago
[107]
harold and his wife had more checks
[109]
stolen this time
[110]
not from their business this mailbox
[112]
right here
[114]
your whole mailbox my whole mailbox and
[116]
again the criminal was sloppy
[119]
simply whiting out portions of the
[121]
printed check and handwriting a new name
[123]
address and dollar amount the original
[126]
check was for just 63 dollars
[129]
why would a bank accept something that
[131]
looks like that
[132]
because it went through the mobile
[134]
banking some of the new technology
[137]
is letting people get away with this no
[139]
question what makes it
[140]
easy to happen is the online app that
[143]
banks give you
[144]
this is what they're talking about those
[146]
handy mobile banking apps that
[148]
millions of people now use to deposit
[150]
checks
[151]
just point and shoot and you're done no
[154]
need to drive to your bank or
[156]
atm since the start of the pandemic
[159]
mobile banking has skyrocketed last
[162]
april alone
[163]
right after the pandemic started new
[165]
mobile banking registrations jumped
[167]
200 percent consumers are not the only
[170]
ones who enjoy the convenience of
[172]
depositing checks by phone criminals
[175]
love it too the fraudsters have are
[178]
always one step ahead and they figured
[179]
out
[180]
how to make a deposit
[183]
and quickly go and withdraw the money
[185]
john ravita is the marketing director
[187]
for sqn banking systems a company
[190]
that provides fraud detection tools for
[192]
banks
[193]
he says mobile banking is ideal for
[196]
criminals
[197]
because they never have to actually show
[199]
up at a bank
[200]
i think the challenge with mobile
[202]
banking it's faceless
[204]
in 2018 even before the spike in mobile
[206]
banking
[207]
criminals stole 1.3 billion dollars
[210]
through check fraud according to the
[212]
american bankers association
[214]
but that same year banks stopped
[217]
10 times that much in attempted fraud
[220]
thanks to sophisticated technology
[222]
they're doing a heck of a job stopping
[224]
check fraud as best they can
[226]
but if banks are doing a good job and
[228]
they have the technology to spot
[229]
fraudulent checks deposited by mobile
[231]
banking
[232]
why do they still accept blatantly
[235]
fraudulent checks like these
[237]
ravita says many smaller banks and
[239]
credit unions have not invested
[241]
in adequate fraud prevention tools and
[244]
even big banks that do use the
[246]
technology
[247]
can't inspect every single check for
[249]
signs of fraud
[250]
that doesn't always happen it's just not
[252]
cost justified to look at every check
[255]
13 investigates reached out to the
[256]
american bankers association which
[258]
represents the banking industry
[260]
a spokesman told 13 news protecting
[263]
customers from fraud is a top priority
[265]
for the nation's banks
[266]
banks of all sizes use a range of
[269]
sophisticated systems to
[270]
prevent the overwhelming majority of
[272]
fraud attempts when fraud does occur
[275]
customers are typically made whole have
[277]
you gotten all this money back from the
[278]
bank no
[279]
they said we allowed it to happen harold
[282]
and his staff have now waited
[283]
nine months for their bank to make them
[285]
whole rob's bank has reimbursed him for
[288]
only about
[289]
half his losses nobody's jumping up and
[291]
down and saying oh we're going to take
[292]
care of this we're going to take care of
[293]
that
[294]
both businessmen say they know other
[296]
people in the same boat
[298]
and now they're hoping to warn others
[301]
it's a big deal
[302]
you've got to stop this problem it's
[304]
unreal
[305]
that the world's gotten to like this
[307]
where you can't use your own mailbox
[309]
people
[310]
are getting away with this it doesn't
[312]
seem like anybody is having to pay for
[314]
what they're doing
[316]
police reports have been filed for each
[317]
of these cases but
[319]
so far no one's been caught criminals
[321]
know check fraud cases don't always get
[324]
high priority if you write checks or if
[326]
you use mobile banking we've got tips on
[328]
how to protect yourself
