it is 11 p.m i am definitely trespassing and i'm聽 about to start surviving on nothing but food waste聽聽
[6]
for the next three days all right let me tell聽 you a story a few years ago i used to work at聽聽
[11]
a supermarket and at the end of every day聽 we would throw a disturbingly large amount聽聽
[15]
of perfectly good food in the bin think loads of聽 bread punnets of eggs and lots and lots of fresh聽聽
[21]
fruits and vegetables yet australia and countries聽 worldwide are in a horrific food waste crisis with聽聽
[26]
billions of tons of food being wasted every year聽 and more people suffering from hunger than ever聽聽
[31]
before and even with donation initiatives food聽 keeps getting wasted then scrolling through my聽聽
[37]
phone one day i came across this video hi my name聽 is jeff seal and tonight i'm going to teach you聽聽
[41]
how to get free food out of the garbage which聽 led me to this video we're also wasting all of聽聽
[46]
this good food which led me to the question聽 could freaking isn't play a crucial role in聽聽
[50]
the food waste crisis and could i survive three聽 stomach churning days living off discarded food聽聽
[55]
or would i go to bed very very hungry i've聽 just found a freaking community in my city聽聽
[61]
and there's almost 7 000 people that are part聽 of it that that means there's potentially 7 000聽聽
[67]
people who live and thrive off dumpster聽 diving and off the friggin lifestyle聽聽
[72]
that's an incredibly large amount of people so聽 i've literally just reached out to see if anyone聽聽
[75]
would be interested in taking me on a dumpster聽 diving adventure and hopefully help me understand聽聽
[80]
what this community does who the people are聽 that are part of it while we wait let's go聽聽
[85]
and get some breakfast now i'm not gonna lie i聽 don't have the strongest stomach in the world聽聽
[90]
and the thought of scrounging around in a bin to聽 find food it's just not the most pleasant idea聽聽
[97]
i'm just imagining the thick sour smell of rotting聽 food and then opening the bin and all these like聽聽
[103]
rats run out and then to get the food you need聽 to put your hands through this mashed banana and聽聽
[107]
it's just like just so gross actually聽 that's given me an idea hang on one second聽聽
[126]
so because the bins are so deep i've聽 just bought this so this is going to聽聽
[129]
help me move some of the older food and聽 then like collect the things that are聽聽
[134]
actually fresh and actually perfectly good聽 to eat this should come in a lot of handy
[140]
okay it's 12 p.m and i skipped聽 breaky i was just you know聽聽
[143]
practicing for the uh for the actual thing聽 you know making sure i can grab that food and聽聽
[147]
and you know i was practicing my bin movements聽 and my grabber movements and i just hit myself聽聽
[154]
in the face yeah i was i was definitely just聽 stalling i think now i'm absolutely starving聽聽
[159]
so i am going to actually go now and we're聽 going to give it a crack and hunt for some food聽聽
[178]
so here's the deal it was pure carnage in there聽 just imagine like rotting fish moldy cheese聽聽
[184]
just the most disgusting no just kidding聽 there was literally nothing in that bin so聽聽
[189]
i guess i'm gonna have to try another聽 one but after driving around to a few聽聽
[192]
more locations it became evident that it would be聽 too difficult to search the bins too many people
[204]
but luckily i got in touch with olivia an active聽 freaking who would take me on a dumpster dive聽聽
[208]
the next day and she also told me that聽 you should only go diving late at night聽聽
[211]
so i waited until night time okay聽 i have to be really quick because聽聽
[214]
i'm definitely trespassing here but let's聽 have a look at what they have in their bins
[220]
damn it absolutely nothing
[228]
okay location number two is a no-go there are聽 just way too many security guards walking around聽聽
[233]
i would definitely be caught one more place that聽 i know of that's close but other than that this聽聽
[238]
might be an absolute fail of a day and聽 i'm gonna go to bed very very hungry
[246]
i don't know why but i definitely聽 thought this would be easier than it is聽聽
[249]
especially not eating for an entire day聽 it just makes you so frustrated i don't聽聽
[254]
know what i'm gonna do tomorrow because i have聽 so long before i get to go with olivia for the聽聽
[259]
official dumpster diving adventure i'm gonna have聽 to work out something tomorrow that is for sure
[268]
held out as long as i can but i've got to聽 eat something and luckily i've just found聽聽
[272]
the mushiest grossest banana that i could find聽 and also some yogurt that's past its expiry聽聽
[277]
date in the fridge so considering i would have聽 been both surely that's fair game to be able to聽聽
[281]
either right sure and hopefully that will keep me聽 nourished until i meet olivia tonight at 10 30 p.m聽聽
[288]
hopefully i don't get sick from this聽 because this doesn't look the nicest yummy
[298]
it's not terrible but this will keep me fed聽 all right i'm gonna eat this in peace and i'll聽聽
[302]
see you tonight i've got everything i need for a聽 proper bin diving session i've got my head torch聽聽
[308]
oh jesus run the eyes i've got my hand clamper聽 which can pick up things i've got a backpack聽聽
[313]
which is going to store all of the food and then聽 i'm going to be capturing it all on this gopro聽聽
[317]
so after a few practice grabs i headed off to聽 meet olivia hello nice to meet you how you going聽聽
[324]
good yeah so like i'd love to know how how you got聽 into this and and yeah why are you doing it i lost聽聽
[331]
my full-time job through kroger because you're so聽 used to working full-time relying on hours and so聽聽
[336]
i guess like what's the point of spending money on聽 food when it just gets right in the bin so do you聽聽
[340]
think it started from a financial reason or from a聽 like a food or it's a combination of both i reckon聽聽
[346]
food waste food waste was the first yeah it's聽 definitely i try to try to as much as mine live聽聽
[352]
a minimal kind of life as much as i can and what聽 we found at the first location truly blew my mind聽聽
[359]
i can't believe how much food is like it's聽 all perfectly good food as well we found a聽聽
[364]
huge volume of fresh produce like cabbages聽 broccoli and mangoes as well as an almost聽聽
[369]
entire case of pepsi cans and a few fresh beers聽 all right first location done and dusted do you聽聽
[377]
feel like you get judged by friends or family聽 or whoever you speak to about when you do this聽聽
[382]
oh yeah my family is very judgmental like聽 some people scream to their nose when i say聽聽
[386]
i can't get my food from and when i show them the聽 food they're like oh my goodness because i was and聽聽
[391]
you feel like you get enough um food for the week聽 or yeah like i don't go every night obviously i'll聽聽
[398]
try and take as much as i can then i'm like what聽 the hell i do this food so then it's almost wasted聽聽
[402]
exactly because that yeah that is聽 something i have noticed is that the聽聽
[406]
the community only take what they need because聽 there was someone who posted um who was like聽聽
[409]
please don't name names or locations or whatever聽 because there's a commit you know a big community聽聽
[414]
of people who rely on on dumpster diving and聽 these food bins to to be able to survive and聽聽
[420]
feed their families and stuff and i was like wow聽 i you know never even thought of that and i can't聽聽
[425]
believe how much good food this is i just can't聽 get over it it is so frustrating because this is聽聽
[432]
two massive bins that are just full of聽 perfectly edible food beautiful rolls
[440]
you know what like what was wrong with you聽 know what it was just delicious all right
[449]
about to drop off a bunch of the food we just聽 found to a community group they've got a free聽聽
[454]
pantry a library a community garden and they聽 welcome anybody all right let's grab this and聽聽
[459]
this is one of the only few groups in the聽 neighborhood providing support food and a聽聽
[464]
sense of community for those individuals聽 and families doing it tough there's some聽聽
[468]
pretty pretty good people out there that聽 are doing good things for the community
[474]
thank you so much i appreciate it and enjoy聽 the food wow what an insane experience that was聽聽
[481]
can't quite believe it to be honest it is 12 30. i聽聽
[485]
am absolutely knackered i'll聽 show you the whole tomorrow
[490]
this is the hole that i got last night and as聽 you can see it is not a huge amount of highly聽聽
[496]
nutritious foods i am super grateful that i do聽 have this food to eat today but we're going to聽聽
[500]
supplement with something else that i've literally聽 recently just found out about and it's an app聽聽
[505]
called why waste now one of the app's key features聽 is it allows you to search for restaurants near聽聽
[510]
you and purchase the leftover meals they couldn't聽 sell at a significantly discounted price reducing聽聽
[515]
unnecessary food waste it just so happens that聽 some people that i know own one of the restaurants聽聽
[519]
that are part of this program so i'm gonna go聽 and check out their restaurant later today but聽聽
[523]
let's try some of this food and see what it's聽 like it's my favorite food this is it this slaps
[534]
not the worst thing i've had in my life聽 oh it's time for the last meal and i am聽聽
[539]
so ready hey how are you good to see you hello do聽 you get many people coming in and using the white聽聽
[546]
waist how do you used to get a lot more good聽 you know yeah people then started not doing it聽聽
[552]
quite often so you know yeah you're going聽 to spread the word out there tell everyone聽聽
[557]
to use that at the end of the day聽 we don't want our food to go into
[566]
legend thank you so much so it's evident that聽 a huge amount of food is still going to waste聽聽
[570]
and whilst veganism may be too underground to have聽 the ability to truly impact the global food waste聽聽
[575]
crisis what this community is doing is taking the聽 crisis into their own hands and actively working聽聽
[580]
to reduce their personal and communities waste聽 which all has a compounding effect we all want聽聽
[585]
to live a happy and healthy life and a big part聽 of this means looking after our environment so聽聽
[589]
instead of buying a full price meal try the why聽 waste app or your country's equivalent consider聽聽
[594]
donating leftover foods to your local charities聽 and just take whatever small steps you can to聽聽
[598]
limit the amount of stuff that goes in the bin聽 otherwise we will forever be fighting an uphill聽聽
[602]
battle don't forget to like and subscribe聽 everyone and i will see you in the next one
