[8]
"I am not afraid of failure. I am聽
afraid of succeeding at things that聽聽
[14]
don't matter. I am not afraid of failure. I am聽
afraid of succeeding at things that don't matter."聽聽
[21]
You might recognize those words from the great聽
missionary, William Carey. I think he was just聽聽
[26]
giving voice to thoughts that we've all had at one聽
time or another. We know there are a lot of things聽聽
[32]
in life we could do, a lot of things in life we聽
could succeed at, but we know intuitively there聽聽
[38]
are very, very few things in life that really聽
actually matter. There's only a few things in life聽聽
[45]
that will make a difference to the world, that聽
will make a long-term difference to the people we聽聽
[51]
really care about. And we know it would be tragic聽
if at the end of our lives we looked back and聽聽
[57]
saw that we had succeeded at all kinds of lesser聽
things, all the while failing at the much greater聽聽
[64]
things. Just think how many people have gone to聽
the grave with extravagant wealth and with all聽聽
[72]
kinds of possessions, but with a broken marriage聽
or with children who barely even know them.
[79]
Just a little while ago, I stayed with a family聽
down south, and their next-door neighbor had聽聽
[84]
built this huge, huge home. He and his wife had聽
built it together and then they had doubled it聽聽
[90]
in size so they could host great parties, and聽
then their marriage had fallen apart and she had聽聽
[96]
left and taken the children, and now he was living聽
alone in this ten thousand square foot house. So,聽聽
[103]
by one measure, he had succeeded. He had a聽
giant home and a beautiful car and the wealth聽聽
[108]
to support it all, but then by a more important聽
measure he had failed. By those measures, he had聽聽
[116]
nothing at all. He was wealthy, but destitute.聽
He was an object of envy and an object of pity.
[126]
Don't we all live with this fear that we'll聽
succeed at the lesser things while failing聽聽
[132]
at the greater things? You know, it's not like聽
those lesser things in life are bad things. Some聽聽
[137]
of those lesser things are actually very good聽
things. It's just that they are lesser. They're聽聽
[143]
not those matters of first importance. There's聽
an order to life, and we know that sometimes聽聽
[148]
those lesser things can look so attractive.聽
They can be so distracting, and they can聽聽
[154]
keep us from giving attention to those聽
few things that matter so, so much. See,聽聽
[160]
succeeding at the lesser things at the cost of聽
the greater things is its own form of failure.
[167]
What does it matter if you become CEO but聽
lose your family along the way? What does聽聽
[173]
it matter if you win the gold medal but聽
you lose your spouse? Or like Jesus said,聽聽
[178]
"What does it matter if you gain the whole聽
world but lose your soul?" And we are really,聽聽
[185]
really bad at making these assessments.聽
We're so tempted at times to throw away聽聽
[190]
all those big things at the cost of the聽
lesser things. Really, succeeding at lesser聽聽
[197]
things at the cost of the greater things聽
is the worst form of failure of them all.
[202]
But there's a solution, there is an antidote. And聽
the solution is productivity, productivity that's聽聽
[210]
rightly defined according to the Word of God, a聽
kind of Bible-based productivity, a Bible-defined聽聽
[218]
productivity that helps us identify what are聽
those things that matter most, then helps us聽聽
[224]
pursue them and succeed at them. That kind of聽
productivity helps us identify and pursue those聽聽
[231]
few things that God means for us to succeed at聽
and it helps us avoid the million and one lesser聽聽
[238]
things that really just matter so much less. I聽
wonder if it would surprise you to know that the聽聽
[244]
Bible speaks about productivity, that the Bible聽
tells us, it calls us to live productive lives?
[250]
It might not use the word "productivity," but it's聽
full of these calls for us to understand it and聽聽
[257]
pursue it, full of calls for us to steer away from聽
those lesser things so we can give our attention,聽聽
[263]
our focus to the greater things. The art of聽
productivity is the art of succeeding at things聽聽
[270]
that matter. At its best, productivity is ensuring聽
that you're succeeding at those things that matter聽聽
[276]
the most. It's meant to ensure that you don't have聽
that moment where you look back on your life and聽聽
[283]
realize that you've succeeded just at the fleeting聽
things, at the minor things, those things that聽聽
[289]
don't matter. Maybe you've got more followers on聽
Facebook or Pinterest than anyone else you know,聽聽
[295]
but it's been years and years since you've shared聽
the gospel with someone and encouraged them to聽聽
[299]
become a follower of Jesus. You got the raise聽
and you got the company car and you got the聽聽
[306]
corner office. Well done! But your family can聽
barely even remember what you look like. Shame!
[313]
See, productivity defined by the Word of聽
God keeps you from focusing on those lesser聽聽
[319]
things and ensures that you are focusing聽
on the things of the greatest value. So,聽聽
[325]
I believe if we read God's Word聽
and we see what God has to say,聽聽
[329]
we would come up with a definition of聽
productivity that goes something like this:聽聽
[333]
"Productivity is effectively stewarding your聽
gifts, your talents, your time, your energy,聽聽
[340]
and your enthusiasm for the good of others and聽
the glory of God." It's effectively stewarding聽聽
[346]
your gifts, talents, time, energy, and enthusiasm聽
for the good of others and for the glory of God.
[352]
See, what matters most in life, what matters聽
most in the universe, what matters most to聽聽
[358]
God is the glory of God, and God calls us to聽
bring glory to Him in every way in every area聽聽
[365]
of life. This whole world exists from God and聽
for God so it can display the glory of God. So,聽聽
[373]
in Psalm 19 we read, "The heavens declare聽
the glory of God. The sky above proclaims聽聽
[379]
His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and聽
night to night reveals knowledge." This world聽聽
[385]
is constantly proclaiming the Word of God. Do聽
you hear it? Do you see the glory of God? This聽聽
[393]
world exists for His glory. And if this world聽
exists for the glory of God, then so do we. If聽聽
[401]
the stars and the planets and the animals and the聽
trees, if all of them exist for the glory of God,聽聽
[406]
then how much do we who are made in the image聽
of God? We are meant to join in this chorus. You聽聽
[415]
and I exist to display God, to deflect all glory聽
and honor away from ourselves and onto Him. So,聽聽
[423]
Romans 11:36, "For from Him and through Him and聽
to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever."
[430]
We are meant to live lives that glorify聽
God in every way and in every moment,聽聽
[436]
which raises the question, "How do we do this? How聽
can we live in such a way that we're glorifying聽聽
[444]
God?" We bring glory to God when we do good to聽
others. See, there's nothing more precious that聽聽
[453]
God has made than people, people He's made聽
in His own image. So, no wonder then that聽聽
[459]
God tells us to do good to them. No wonder then聽
that He tells us to serve them, to live for them,聽聽
[465]
to love them. And all through the Bible,聽
we see this link: We do good for others;聽聽
[470]
that brings glory to God. So, Jesus says, "Let聽
your light shine before others, so that they聽聽
[476]
may see your good works and give glory to聽
your Father who is in heaven." Peter says,聽聽
[483]
"Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable,聽
so that when they speak against you as evildoers,聽聽
[488]
they may see your good deeds and聽
glorify God on the day of visitation."
[494]
Do you see that we do good to others and God gets聽
the glory? God gets the glory through the good聽聽
[502]
things we do. Well, that means that the greater聽
things in life are the things we do for others,聽聽
[509]
not the things we do for ourselves. The greater聽
things in life are the things that we do for the聽聽
[516]
benefit of other people. The lesser things聽
in life are the things we do for ourselves,聽聽
[521]
for our own good. And so, this is why the Bible聽
then is full of these calls to good works,聽聽
[527]
good works meant to serve other people. Now hear聽
me, these are not the kind of good works that聽聽
[534]
merit our salvation before God, not the kind聽
of good works we do to draw the eye of God,聽聽
[540]
to draw us to God. No, these are good works聽
that flow out of our salvation from God.聽聽
[545]
God has freely saved us through the gospel. He聽
saved us by grace alone, through faith alone,聽聽
[552]
in Christ alone. He's given us these great聽
gifts, the gift of peace with God, the gift聽聽
[558]
of justification, the gift of security forever.聽
Best of all, He's given us the gift of Himself,聽聽
[565]
of this real and living relationship with the聽
Creator of the universe. And so, of course,聽聽
[570]
then our hearts overflow with gratitude. They聽
overflow with love for Him and this desire to聽聽
[578]
do what He calls us to do, to make sure that He聽
gets every bit of the glory that is due His name.
[584]
So, when Paul writes to the church in聽
Ephesus, he says, "We are His workmanship,聽聽
[590]
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God聽
prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."聽聽
[597]
God saved us so we could do good works. God saved聽
us so we could do good to others. This is God's聽聽
[606]
purpose in saving us. So, when Paul writes to聽
Titus, he says, "I want you to insist on these聽聽
[612]
things, so that those who have believed in God may聽
be careful to devote themselves to good works."聽聽
[618]
He writes to the congregation in Galatia.聽
He says, "So then, as we have opportunity,聽聽
[623]
let us do good to everyone, and especially聽
to those who are of the household of faith."
[629]
Do you want to succeed at the greater things聽
in life? Then, you need to direct your life at聽聽
[636]
bringing God glory by loving other people, by聽
doing good to other people. This is why I can聽聽
[643]
say productivity is effectively stewarding your聽
gifts, talents, time, energy, and enthusiasm for聽聽
[648]
the good of others and then the glory of God.聽
Productivity is taking everything you are,聽聽
[654]
everything you've got and consecrating it to聽
God and to His service. It's using all of it,聽聽
[661]
everything you are, everything you have to do聽
good to others. It is taking your spiritual gifts,聽聽
[667]
your natural talents, your time, your energy,聽
even your enthusiasm and deliberately directing聽聽
[674]
it to doing good to others, trusting that聽
as you do that, you're glorifying God.
[679]
Just pause for a moment. Isn't that the kind of聽
life you want to live? Doesn't this sound like聽聽
[688]
the kind of life that really matters? Imagine聽
that many years from now you're looking back on聽聽
[693]
your life. If you look back on a life that's聽
full of doing good to others, there's no way聽聽
[698]
you would think, "I failed." But if you look聽
back and you saw a life of living for yourself,聽聽
[705]
for your own good, for your own glory, well聽
then, of course, you would look back and say,聽聽
[712]
"I succeeded at things that just don't matter.聽
I failed at the things that matter the most."
[718]
I think we all long to be remembered聽
something like this: "He gave his gifts,聽聽
[725]
his talents. He gave it all, all he had聽
for the good of others and the glory of聽聽
[732]
God." Isn鈥檛 that why the church wept for聽
Dorcas when she died? Isn't that why the聽聽
[738]
church was so glad to commend Barnabas to聽
the service of others? Isn't that why we聽聽
[743]
honor our Christian heroes like William Carey聽
and Eric Liddell and Amy Carmichael and Jim聽聽
[748]
Elliott and on and on? They gave all they聽
had in service to others and they did it聽聽
[752]
out of this desire to glorify God, to see聽
His name magnified. Their lives mattered.聽聽
[760]
Their lives were significant. No one accused聽
them of failing at those greater things.
[765]
Is this your life? Are you stewarding all that聽
God has given you for the good of others and聽聽
[774]
God's glory? Would your family be able to say,聽
"He devotes himself to good works"? Would your聽聽
[783]
church be able to say, "She does good to聽
everyone and especially to those who are聽聽
[787]
of the household of faith"? Because that's the聽
life God calls us to. That's the productive life聽聽
[794]
according to God's definition of productivity.聽
That's the life God created you to live,聽聽
[800]
but it's not an easy life. It's not easy because聽
there are endless challenges to this kind of life,聽聽
[807]
endless challenges to this kind of productivity,聽
a million ways that our productivity is hindered聽聽
[814]
and interrupted and destroyed. Some of them are聽
just a natural consequence of living in a world聽聽
[819]
that's full of sin. Some are just our own sin聽
rising up within us to interrupt and interfere.
[826]
Just briefly, let me highlight three challenges to聽
productivity that I think are especially prominent聽聽
[832]
in a world like this one. So, just imagine聽
that you spent time considering your life.聽聽
[837]
You've thought deeply about the ways God has聽
gifted you and the talents He has given you,聽聽
[841]
the opportunities you got, all of that. You've聽
planned how you can use all of those things to聽聽
[847]
do good to others and bring glory to God. Then you聽
get busy with life. You begin to live your life,聽聽
[854]
where you'll encounter the problem of聽
distraction. Distraction haunts us in聽聽
[860]
this always on digital world. Distraction聽
haunts us because we're surrounded by聽聽
[865]
devices that are made equally for mindful聽
productivity and mindless entertainment.
[871]
So distraction, it seeks us out and finds us.聽
It's like every new generation of devices finds聽聽
[878]
new ways of being distracted, creative ways聽
of barging into our lives to pull us away聽聽
[883]
from what we're doing and to push us toward聽
something else. But distraction really just聽聽
[890]
masks laziness. We want to be distracted because聽
it's hard to be productive. It's hard to live that聽聽
[897]
life of productivity, so we want to be pulled聽
away from it. It's easier to be pulled away.
[901]
To be productive, we need to find ways of聽
shutting out distractions. We need to find聽聽
[909]
ways of removing them so we can focus on the聽
things that are truly significant. Now hear me,聽聽
[914]
entertainment is not wrong. Rest is not聽
wrong. Netflix isn't intrinsically evil.聽聽
[921]
I don't want to go back to a world without聽
YouTube, but they've got to take their proper聽聽
[926]
place. We can't allow them to distract聽
us from those things that matter most.
[931]
And then, there's the problem of procrastination.聽
Over the last few decades, we've seen this big聽聽
[938]
shift in the workplace where more and more of聽
us have jobs that involve knowledge work. So,聽聽
[943]
we're not on factory floors generally or聽
assembly lines with somebody hovering right聽聽
[947]
over us and telling us what to do. So many聽
of us sit at desks and we stare at screens聽聽
[953]
and we can choose any moment whether we'll do聽
our work or delay our work. Too many times,聽聽
[961]
we put off our responsibilities until聽
tomorrow so instead we can feed on a聽聽
[966]
million little digital snacks, a little form聽
of entertainment. How many times have we set聽聽
[972]
out to do good to others but then be聽
distracted? And then procrastination聽聽
[979]
works hand-in-hand with distraction to聽
become an even deeper form of laziness.
[984]
And then, there's a problem of busyness.聽
We measure ourselves by our busyness. We聽聽
[991]
think that busier is better and really the聽
only alternative is busyness or laziness,聽聽
[996]
and so we frantically pursue way too many聽
tasks, way too many responsibilities,聽聽
[1001]
and it all displaces the things聽
that matter most. You know,聽聽
[1007]
so much of busyness is simply not understanding聽
our limitations, not understanding that God聽聽
[1013]
doesn't call us to do everything, but to do聽
a few things and to do them very, very well.
[1018]
Distraction, procrastination, busyness, somehow聽
they all collide in the world of laziness. We聽聽
[1028]
get busy, so busy, and the busier we get the聽
more we procrastinate and get distracted and聽聽
[1033]
then deadlines creep up and suddenly we're聽
crazy busy again. Perhaps, we need to recover聽聽
[1039]
that middle ground of diligence. I'm not busy.聽
I'm not lazy. I'm being diligent. I know the聽聽
[1047]
few things that God has called me to, and I'm聽
doing them to the best of my abilities. I am聽聽
[1052]
not afraid of failing at the things that matter聽
most because I'm not getting hung up on those聽聽
[1057]
things that just don't matter. I'm being聽
productive in the best sense of that term.
[1063]
Friends, God calls us to live productive lives,聽
not according to our definition of the term,聽聽
[1072]
not according to anyone else's, but according聽
to His. God calls us to live this kind of聽聽
[1078]
productivity that involves glorifying聽
Him by doing good to others. He calls us聽聽
[1084]
to deal with whatever will keep us from that,聽
distraction and procrastination and busyness,聽聽
[1089]
every other hindrance so we can instead聽
effectively steward all that He has given us,聽聽
[1095]
our gifts, our talents, our time, our energy, our聽
enthusiasm for the good of others and the glory of聽聽
[1104]
God. That's the life He calls us to. Just like he聽
says in 1 Corinthians 10:31, "Whether you eat or聽聽
[1110]
drink or whatever you do," every bit of it, all聽
that you are, "do it all to the glory of God."
[1117]
Thank you.
