Tesla vs Competitors: Cost of Maintenance Including Battery Replacement - YouTube
Channel: Ben Sullins
[0]
- Recently I had an issue
with the windshield wiper
[3]
on my Tesla where the
motor actually went out
[6]
and the arm broke, and
this is the only issue
[10]
I've had with my Tesla in the past year.
[12]
This time what I had
to do is actually have
[14]
a Tesla Ranger, this is a service person
[16]
that comes out to your
house and fixes your car
[18]
right there in your garage
or in your driveway.
[21]
This all cost me zero
dollars because I'm under
[23]
the four year warranty
where basically everything
[26]
for the Tesla is covered.
[28]
And being the data geek that I am
[29]
it got me to thinking what
is the cost of maintaining
[32]
this car, my Tesla Model S, compared to
[35]
a similar gas powered car.
[37]
Now first I should just
clarify that when I do
[39]
my comparison it has to be
to a similar gas powered car,
[42]
I've seen a lot of comments there
[44]
well my Honda this, or my KIA that,
[46]
yes of course, those are
cheap economical cars,
[49]
they do not compare to these
luxury high end sedans.
[52]
So for this analysis I'm going to use
[55]
a Mercedes Benz S-Class, an Audi A7,
[59]
and a BMW 7 Series, and I'm gonna look
[62]
at the cost of ownership,
the actually maintenance cost
[65]
of those cars compared to
what I pay for my Tesla.
[69]
So first I should mention
that Tesla has had
[72]
some reliability issues,
in fact just recently
[74]
Reuters reported that they're spending
[77]
about 1,000 dollars per
vehicle on warranty repairs
[80]
compared to Ford and GM which are spending
[82]
about 400 to 700 dollars per vehicle.
[85]
So Tesla's actually having
to repair these a lot more
[88]
and spending a lot more money.
[90]
All I care about though
is how much it actually
[92]
is gonna cost me and kind
of what the experience
[94]
is gonna be like.
[96]
So let's take a look at the data now
[97]
and see what it actually tells us.
[100]
First off Tesla offers
a prepaid service plan
[103]
which spans three, four, and eight years
[105]
depending on which one you choose.
[107]
This will reduce your overall cost,
[109]
but we'll compare those
alongside not having
[112]
any prepaid plan as well, so I'll have
[114]
all three examples here.
[116]
So looking at the total
maintenance cost here
[118]
over five years you can see
that all three Tesla options
[121]
are a lot cheaper than
all the other options,
[125]
the Mercedes, the BMW, and the Audi even
[127]
are just many times over more expensive
[130]
than owning a Tesla in
terms of maintenance.
[133]
So if you take a look at
the total maintenance cost
[135]
over five years what you can see is that
[137]
the most expensive is
the Mercedes Benz S-Class
[140]
clocking in at around 18,000
dollars in maintenance,
[143]
the BMW 7 Series clocking
in around 17,000 dollars
[146]
just behind it, the Audi
is significantly cheaper,
[149]
around 10,000 dollars, or 9,500,
[151]
and then all of the Tesla options
[153]
are just significantly
cheaper than all of those.
[156]
In fact, the most expensive
one is 2,800 bucks.
[159]
There isn't really saving much in terms of
[161]
the agony of dealing with
a car dealership here,
[163]
but you are gonna be saving a ton of money
[165]
over the cost over those five years.
[168]
But what if we look at the
actual details year by year?
[171]
So on the left here I have each car
[173]
and then year by year I have
the actual cost of maintenance,
[176]
and you can see that as time goes on,
[179]
at least for the BMW and the Mercedes,
[181]
the costs just tend to go up and up,
[183]
where as the Audi and the
Tesla are all pretty flat.
[187]
In fact Audi actually looks
like it decreases over time
[189]
which is kind of nice.
[191]
So I guess when you think about it
[192]
there aren't gonna be
any big surprises here
[194]
with the Tesla or the
Audi for that matter.
[196]
Now if we wanna compare
on a percentage basis
[199]
and we wanna look at let's
take the most expensive Tesla
[201]
model, the Tesla service,
the non-prepaid one,
[204]
remember it's about 2,800 bucks,
[206]
compare that to the Audi A7,
the BMW, and the Mercedes,
[209]
you can see that with the Audi
[211]
you're actually still
saving about 241 percent,
[214]
close to 7,000 dollars
over the cheapest car,
[218]
the similar gas powered car.
[220]
Compare that to the BMW and
you're at 500 percent savings
[223]
and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class you're near
[225]
550 percent savings, almost 15,000 dollars
[229]
or North of 15,000
dollars that you're saving
[231]
in maintenance costs alone.
[233]
That's a big deal and that really adds up,
[235]
and this is only a five year comparison.
[238]
Now I know a lot of you
are out there thinking
[240]
well what about the
replacement of the battery,
[242]
I've even had people comment saying,
[244]
you know you have to replace
the battery every year
[245]
which I'm yet to find data on.
[247]
But the way it works is there
is a eight year warranty
[250]
on your Tesla battery, and
it's an infinite mile warranty
[254]
up to eight years, so any
problems you have before that
[257]
they're gonna replace it for you.
[259]
But after that the cost
that we're looking at
[261]
is about 12,000 dollars to replace it,
[264]
that's based on current standards,
[266]
exactly how they're producing them now.
[268]
So if we were to forecast
out let's say eight years
[271]
from when you bought your Tesla
[273]
so that we're eight years from now,
[274]
the price of producing the batteries
[276]
is gonna continue to drop.
[277]
So if we were to take
the 12,000 dollars now
[280]
and reduce it down to say 8,000 dollars,
[282]
and then add that in to the
cost here of our maintenance
[286]
and let's just assume that we absorbed
[289]
all of those 8,000 dollars
within the first five years,
[292]
again it's a little wonky but I'm trying
[294]
to appease anybody that has concerns
[296]
about replacing the batteries here.
[298]
If you wanted to do that
you would be a little bit
[301]
over on the Audi, you'd be
saving a little bit on money,
[304]
the 1.3 thousand or 12
percent over the Audi A7,
[308]
but then you're still
saving close to 60 percent
[311]
on the BMW and nearly 70 percent
[313]
over the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
[316]
So you're still saving
six to 7,000 dollars
[319]
compared to these other cars,
[321]
that's with the assumption
that you would be
[323]
replacing the battery on
your own within five years,
[326]
which really isn't gonna happen.
[329]
Now I'll put a caveat out there
[331]
that of course owning a Tesla
is not a way to save money,
[335]
that's not a good plan, but
if you are in the market
[338]
for one of these high end luxury sedans
[340]
and you look at this, you're gonna see
[342]
that you're gonna have
a much better experience
[344]
and save a decent amount of money there.
[346]
In addition to saving money on amenities
[349]
you're also no longer gonna have to worry
[351]
about spending time
getting gas at the pump,
[353]
no more oil changes, no more
filters every couple of months,
[356]
all of that coupled with the fact
[359]
that the car seats five people comfortably
[361]
and has more storage space
than any of these other sedans,
[364]
in fact it has more than
my wife's midsize SUV,
[367]
and it has the highest safety
rating of any car ever tested.
[370]
I think what you'll find
is that when you compare
[372]
the Tesla to any of these other
luxury sedans in this class
[376]
it comes out ahead in almost
[377]
every category that you look at.
[379]
All right, so there it is, the cost
[382]
or the savings that you're gonna have
[383]
of a Tesla compared to a
similar gas powered vehicle.
