I'm very excited to

August 2nd, next Monday,
[11]
the new Shop DeFranco drop is dropping.
[13]

[27]
embroidered, "Emotionally Exhausted" gear,
[29]

[35]
"Honestly, I'm fucking killing it."
[37]
Available in both the black camo

[39]
as well as safety yellow,
which looks amazing.
[42]
Also, as promised,
[43]
because you did make it
the number one product,
[45]
I am now modeling the new cropped hoodie.
[48]
It's, I feel very uncomfortable.
[50]
You want the strangest things.
[52]
Okay, I'm switching back.
[53]
So yeah, you can be on the
lookout for Monday though,
[55]
because there are certain sizes
[56]
that are gonna be limited
for certain products.
[58]
You wanna make sure
you get in on this drop
[60]
and you know become one of the many people
[61]
that end up sending
very angry tweets at me
[63]
because the thing they wanted is sold out.
[64]
If you live in North America,
[65]
text me at this number 813-213-4423,
[68]
or if you're international,
go to ShopDeFranco.com,
[71]
enter in your email and I will
email you when it launches.
[73]
But yeah, with that out of the way,
[74]
once again, welcome to
"The Philip DeFranco Show,"
[76]
hit that like button and
let's just jump into it
[78]
'cause there's a lot
of news to go through.
[79]
First up today, holy hell,
[81]
in massive entertainment
and business news,
[83]
we have Black Widow herself,
[85]
Scarlett Johansson suing Disney.
[87]
According to the Wall Street Journal,
[88]
Johansson filing the lawsuit today
[90]
in Los Angeles Superior
Court against Disney,
[92]
alleging that her contract was breached
[94]
when they released the film
on Disney+ streaming service
[96]
at the same time as it's theatrical debut.
[98]
And saying in her agreement
[99]
that Disney's Marvel
Entertainment guaranteed
[100]
that this would have an
exclusive theatrical release.
[102]
Which it didn't, it was also released
[104]
on Disney+ Premier Access
for $30 at the same time.
[106]
The key thing here is
that her salary was based,
[108]
in large part on the theatrical, right?
[110]
The box office performance of the movie.
[112]
With a suit saying that
"Disney intentionally induced
[113]
Marvel's breach of the
agreement without justification,
[116]
in order to prevent Ms. Johansson
[117]
from realizing the full benefit
of her bargain with Marvel."
[119]
The Wall Street Journal adding
[120]
that this decision may have
cost Scarlett Johansson
[122]
more than $50 million,
[124]
according to a source
familiar with the contract.
[126]
You know, this case even being filed,
[127]
but depending on what happens here,
[129]
it could prove to be incredibly important.
[131]
Because while yes, this is
about Scarlett Johansson,
[133]
by no means should we expect
this to be the last one.
[136]
Or the hybrid model of
theatrical and digital release
[138]
at the same time, it's affected
a big number of movies.
[140]
The thing that's coming
back to Scarlett Johansson.
[142]
According to the report in the complaint,
[143]
Ms. Johansson's representative
[144]
sought to renegotiate her contract
[146]
after learning of the
dual release strategy.
[147]
But ultimately, they're claiming
[148]
that Disney and Marvel were unresponsive.
[150]
Now with all that said,
[151]
as far as Disney's
response to the situation,
[153]
we actually reached out to a
contact we have over at Disney.
[155]
I did not expect them to actually respond,
[157]
but they did respond with this.
[159]
- [Mickey] Hi, it's fucking Mickey.
[161]
If you are passionate about a business,
[162]
then you will know what it
takes to run a fucking business.
[164]
But you don't,
[165]
so don't even act like you're
about the Disney life, bitch.
[169]
- So yeah, I mean, definitely
there's gonna be something
[170]
that we need to keep eyes on.
[172]
But genuinely we do.
[173]
I mean, this could have
[173]
massive implications for the industry.
[175]
While Scarlett Johansson
does pull the headlines
[177]
because she is who she is,
especially in the Marvel movies,
[180]
this affects a lot of people.
[181]
Then, today I actually have an
interactive section for you.
[184]
This morning on Twitter I asked you,
[185]
what do you want me to
talk about on today's show,
[187]
but dumb requests only.
[190]
(phone thuds)
[191]
Wait, is that real?
[192]
Is that a real thing?
[193]
Can I even talk about that on the show?
[195]
Okay, so there is a
journalist who has worked,
[197]
they say for "GQ," "ST Style
Magazine," "Evening Standard,"
[201]
"The Sunday Times Magazine."
[203]
Looks like their name is Flora Gill and,
[205]
okay, this was supposed
to be a joke section.
[207]
This is what happens when
we don't go into something
[209]
with like a fully (stutters and groans)
[212]
Her two latest tweets, as of recording,
[214]
"Absolutely not getting swept up
[215]
in another Twitter cesspool
[216]
so deleted tweet before it picks up steam.
[218]
Obviously not an actual solution,
but it is a real problem.
[220]
Everyone take a deep breath.
[221]
Apropos of nothing I really think
[223]
if someone deletes a tweet,
[224]
it shouldn't be screenshotted
and shared like...
[226]
Just let it die, you know?
[227]
No, no one else agree?"
[228]
And the tweet in question
that Flora wrote is,
[231]
"Someone needs to create
porn for children.
[233]
Hear me out" (laughs)
[235]
(phone thuds)
[236]
"Young teens are already watching porn,
[238]
but they're finding
hardcore aggressive videos
[239]
that give a terrible view of sex.
[241]
They need entry level porn,
[242]
a soft core site where
everyone asks for consent
[244]
and no one gets choked, etcetera."
[246]
(laughs) that is probably
[248]
the worst way she could have
worded this random thought.
[252]
And I mean, if you go through
the replies of those tweets,
[255]
she's getting hammered harder
[256]
than the porn she doesn't
want people to watch.
[258]
'Cause Flora, I get the
part of what you're saying
[260]
in the sense of like
[261]
porn sets up a really
aggressive idea of what sex is.
[265]
I'm also someone that personally
[266]
started watching porn before I was 18.
[268]
I know I'm probably the only one.
[270]
So what you were saying was that
[271]
when someone starts watching porn,
[273]
they should see something that,
[273]
you know, it's like soft core
where everything seems tame,
[276]
it's all good, explicitly
seeing people giving consent,
[279]
almost as if it's a PSA.
[280]
But you're gonna lose
everyone when you say,
[283]
"Make porn for children."
[284]
It's just weird and creepy and yeah,
[286]
it is an attention grabbing sentence,
[289]
but it's a weird, creepy
attention grabbing sentence.
[292]
Like, I just don't even know
how you type that and go like,
[294]
"Yeah, this is gonna be received okay."
[295]
Also, if I could just like chime in
[296]
with my own advice at
the end of this story.
[298]
I think really like the only
solution whatsoever to this
[301]
is just parents talking to their children.
[303]
Like I think back to
the shit that I got into
[305]
and the stuff that I saw when I saw it,
[307]
and you can like do whatever,
[308]
but ultimately at the end of the day,
[309]
you're not gonna be able to
hide your child from the world.
[313]
So I think the only
thing you can really do
[314]
is prepare them for the world.
[316]
Like at some point,
[317]
one of their friends is
gonna show them something.
[318]
I remember, I jokingly say the name Greg.
[320]
There was a dude named Greg,
[321]
showed me a "Penthouse,"
my brain exploded.
[324]
And the stuff that's on the
internet now, oh my God.
[326]
Just have conversations with your children
[328]
and prepare them for the
world because otherwise,
[329]
what are you, is the,
[330]
the Internet's not supposed
to be their parent.
[332]
Come on y'all, I wanted fun stories.
[335]
See, like Code wrote,
[336]
"How my wife takes the
blankets every night
[338]
and expects me to be okay with it,
[339]
but still refuses to take out the garbage,
[341]
regardless of what I say."
[342]
I agree Code, this is an
issue of national security.
[345]
Yeah, Code, what I would say is
[346]
you give her one more warning.
[347]
You say, "Hey, yes,
[348]
relationships are all about give and take.
[351]
But you don't give me
shit and take my covers."
[353]
And then, what do you think
[354]
about Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier?
[356]
So here's the thing with Conor McGregor,
[357]
'cause it's kind of weird.
[358]
And I say this with like no offense
[360]
to Cowboy Cerrone who, you know,
[362]
Dana White fed him to
Conor McGregor back in 2020
[365]
to give him just any sort of wind.
[366]
Really, other than that,
[367]
Conor McGregor has not
won a fight since 2016,
[369]
unless you consider that
old guy from the bar
[372]
or that bus he fucked up.
[373]
No, I mean, it'd be hard to
argue against the fact that
[375]
he is like the ultimate
king of shit talking.
[378]
His lost his last fight after, I believe,
[379]
the medical term is that his
leg went all wibbly wobbly.
[382]
And he's on the ground with Joe Rogan,
[383]
still just like talking so much shit.
[385]
But the thing that comment is referencing,
[387]
is because after the fight,
[388]
another fighter by the
name of Khabib chimed in,
[390]
congratulating Dustin Poirier,
[392]
saying, "Good always defeats evil,"
[394]
to which Conor replied this week.
[395]
"Covid is good and father is evil?"
[397]
in reference to the fact that
[398]
Khabib's father died
of COVID-19 last year.
[400]
I know he later deleted that tweet
[402]
and unsurprisingly it rubbed
a lot of people the wrong way,
[404]
including Daniel Cormier,
[405]
saying that actually
called Khabib after that
[407]
to check in and see if he's okay,
[408]
'cause he was so shocked after the post.
[410]
- He is just,
[412]
taking it way too far and, when you're,
[417]
when you're dealing with death and COVID,
[419]
and all these other things
that we've dealt with
[421]
over the last year and a half,
[422]
that's all off limits, I mean,
[424]
Honestly, when
- Yeah.
[424]
- Conor does stuff like that,
[426]
it's hard to understand
how there's still this,
[430]
mass amount of people that
support that type of behavior.
[433]
And, you know,
[434]
I think when stuff like
that is being said,
[437]
I think it's a cry for help, right?
[438]
Conor has all the money in the world.
[440]
- Hm.
- He has all the fame.
[441]
But now, when you start
to dig at that level,
[444]
it's like somebody needs
[446]
to get to McGregor and help him, right?
[448]
Start to kind of re-shift
his mind and his focus
[451]
and get him back to a better place and,
[454]
it's unfortunate.
[455]
- You know, ultimately
with this story, it's,
[458]
I don't enjoy saying this.
[459]
But it's like Conor
McGregor has been given
[461]
the spotlight and the time
[462]
to just expose himself
for who he really is.
[464]
And there's a difference between
[465]
like being a really good fight promoter
[467]
and understanding the marketing,
[469]
and just being a general scumbag.
[471]
And for me, it's disappointing
'cause I'm a guy that's,
[473]
I loved watching Conor McGregor
come up and just dominate.
[477]
And then he does and says
shit thing after shit thing.
[480]
And you know, I think it's
very giving of Daniel Cormier
[482]
to be like, "This could be a cry for help
[485]
from Conor McGregor."
[486]
But, you know, while he
ended up deleting the tweet,
[487]
I don't think he's
actually going to pull back
[489]
in any meaningful way because,
[491]
he's very much, if you
look at his other stuff,
[493]
he very much seems to be
of the mindset of like
[495]
"I'm rich, so fuck you."
[496]
And honestly, from a marketing standpoint,
[497]
it doesn't serve him to be a nice guy.
[500]
I mean, think about it.
[501]
Who else can make that much
money just taking L after L,
[503]
other than Logan Paul.
[504]
Like once again, McGregor only has one win
[506]
in the last five years.
[507]
So, really like getting
people to pay money to see if,
[510]
you know, he's gonna get
his mouth fucking closed.
[512]
I don't know, it's not something
I actively think about,
[514]
but with it being brought up,
[516]
yeah, I don't know.
[516]
I'd love to know your thoughts.
[518]
And from that,
[518]
I wanna take a quick second
[519]
to thank the fantastic sponsor
of today's show, SeatGeek.
[522]
And you know, most of you know,
[523]
I've worked with SeatGeek
for a long time now,
[525]
and I'm so excited to be
working with them again.
[527]
One, because they've just
always been a great partner,
[529]
and two, it just means
[530]
that we're slowly getting back to normal,
[532]
whatever the hell that is.
[533]
Like I don't know if
you've gotten vaccinated,
[535]
you've started, but like can
you remember live events?
[537]
Sports, concerts, artist exhibits,
[539]
festivals, stand up comedy,
and the list goes on and on.
[541]
And our friends at SeatGeek
have all the tickets
[543]
to get you back out there
whenever you're personally ready.
[545]
SeatGeek has you backed
[546]
by putting tickets from across the web
[548]
in one place to make buying simple.
[550]
So whether it's next week or next year,
[551]
you can find any and all
tickets that you want.
[553]
They even rate every
ticket from zero to 10
[555]
to make sure that you're
getting a good deal.
[557]
And it's as simple as green
means good, red means bad.
[560]
And on top of it all, you can get $20 off
[562]
your first purchase by using
code "PHIL" at checkout.
[564]
That's $20 off your first
purchase with promo code "PHIL."
[567]
Click that link, download the
app and get started today.
[570]
Then up in Canada, you have
the Catholic church making news
[572]
because they're attempting to combat
[573]
bad PR throughout Canada,
[575]
over the ongoing backlash to revelations
[576]
about how absolutely horrible
[578]
the administration of
residential schools actually was.
[580]
Right, and I've covered
the situation before.
[582]
I'll link to it down
below, but a quick TL;DR.
[584]
Residential schools were
a system of schools,
[586]
largely for indigenous children
[588]
they were mostly run
by the Catholic church
[589]
with federal government funding.
[590]
The schools were notoriously cruel.
[591]
And for so long, there were allegations
[593]
that children would go missing.
[594]
And to date, over 1,300
unmarked graves have been found
[597]
at four residential schools across Canada.
[599]
And the true number of those impact,
[601]
we don't know right now
because that's just a fraction
[603]
of the over 130 schools
that used to exist.
[605]
However, despite the
pretty conclusive evidence
[607]
for how shit these schools were,
[609]
some still supported them.
[610]
For weeks, we had Father Rh茅al Forest,
[612]
of the St. Boniface Archdiocese
[613]
in Winnipeg telling parishioners
[615]
that the victims of the
residential schools,
[616]
particularly those
sexually abused, had lied.
[619]
- If they wanted extra money,
[622]
for the money that was given to them,
[624]
they had to lie sometimes.
[626]
Lie that they were abused
sexually, oop another $50,000.
[630]
So, it's kinda hard if
you're poor, not to lie.
[634]
- Going on to defend
the entire school system
[636]
saying that while working
with native communities,
[637]
most enjoyed the schools.
[639]
And unsurprisingly his comments
drew a ton of backlash.
[641]
In fact, he ended up being
placed on leave this week.
[643]
The spokesperson for
the archdiocese saying
[645]
that the institution completely
disavows Forest's comments.
[647]
And while Forest was out
there exposing himself
[649]
for just being an absolute scumbag,
[651]
he wasn't the only PR nightmare
for Catholicism in Canada.
[653]
According to documents
now obtained by CBC News,
[655]
the Roman Catholic church
spent over a decade
[657]
avoiding paying out money to survivors.
[659]
Or back in 2005, it, along
with Protestant churches
[662]
that also ran some residential schools,
[663]
they agreed to pay money
to victims of the schools.
[665]
But instead, according
to an internal summary
[667]
of 2015 court documents,
[668]
the Catholic church actually
spent much of that money
[670]
on lawyers, administration,
[672]
a private fundraising
company and unapproved loans.
[674]
Now, with that, some of
that is technically legal,
[677]
such as a promise to give
tens of millions back
[679]
via in kind services.
[680]
However, there was no audit
[681]
if these services actually happened,
[682]
or, of the alleged value of the services.
[685]
And to be clear here,
[686]
it's not like that was
the standard practice
[687]
for the churches that
entered the 2005 agreement.
[689]
All of the other denominations
paid out their sums
[692]
many years before without issues.
[694]
That said, it is important to know
[695]
that not everyone in the
Catholic church is happy
[697]
about how the institution has
handled the situation, or,
[699]
thinks that the victims
are lying for more cash.
[701]
One priest that we've seen
[702]
who has been very vocal about
his criticisms of the church,
[704]
saying that the conduct
around the legal agreement
[706]
is scandalous, really shameful.
[707]
It was a loophole.
[708]
I think it might be legal,
but it's not ethical.
[710]
And you know, these
revelations are just gonna help
[712]
fuel the anger against
the Catholic church,
[714]
especially with the communities
that have been affected,
[716]
which could unfortunately lead
[717]
to even more churches being targeted
[718]
allegedly by these groups.
[720]
Then, I mean, if there is an Olympic event
[722]
for being a shit head,
[723]
at the very least, I think
you'd get on the podium.
[726]
If you're one of these people
[727]
that are exposing LGBTQ athletes.
[730]
Like right now, openly LGBTQ+ Olympians
[732]
are more visible than they've ever been.
[733]
According to OutSports,
[734]
at least 172 of the around
11,000 Olympians are out,
[737]
which is triple of what
we saw in Rio in 2016.
[740]
But unfortunately, also
what we're seeing here
[742]
are closeted Olympians more
visible than ever as well.
[744]
Right, and that's because
some people have been using
[746]
apps like Grindr and it's explore feature,
[747]
which allows you to search
[748]
and see users in specific locations,
[750]
AKA places like the Olympic Village.
[752]
Right, and some aren't just
contacting who they discover,
[755]
but rather sharing this information
[756]
on platforms like TikTok and Twitter.
[758]
Which, one, if you ever out somebody,
[760]
how fucking dare you, you scumbag.
[762]
And also, two,
[763]
like when we talk about something
international like this,
[765]
you're putting people at serious risk.
[767]
There are countries
where if you are a part
[768]
of the alphabet mafia, it's illegal.
[770]
And yeah, we're seeing places
like TikTok and Twitter
[771]
saying that they've removed
certain posts, they're trying.
[774]
You're still actively
playing with people's lives.
[776]
Then, for a lot of you out there,
[777]
you should definitely be
keeping in mind relief programs
[779]
because many are going away.
[781]
Asterisk, unless something changes,
[783]
but starting with housing.
[784]
As of right now, the
federal eviction moratorium
[786]
that's been protecting
millions of renters, right?
[787]
You have 11 million Americans
at risk of losing their homes.
[791]
That's ending in just a
few days, on July 31st.
[792]
Then, you have unemployment, right?
[794]
25 states have already ended
[795]
their expanded unemployment benefits.
[797]
But, right, the additional $300-a-week
[799]
that is ending in early September.
[801]
The food assistance, if you've
been to one of the households
[802]
that have gotten additional food stamps
[804]
or about $100 more a month,
that's ending September 30th.
[806]
And then finally, unless
something changes,
[808]
starting on October 1st,
[810]
if you have a student loan,
[811]
you're gonna have to
start paying back again.
[812]
Or you could just not, but
you know, I'm not your daddy.
[815]
I'm not gonna force you.
[816]
Also, quick side note,
[817]
if you vote me to be president in 2024,
[819]
I will legalize hitting debt
collectors with baseball bats.
[822]
Sure, they're regular people, doing a job.
[824]
But, you know?
[825]
I'm not running on good moral solutions.
[827]
I'm running on emotional catharsis.
[829]
Right, and so that is the way
[830]
that everything's looking right now.
[831]
Unless something changes
with the Biden administration
[834]
or, something happens in Congress.
[836]
So we're really hoping
anything happens in Congress,
[838]
especially the Senate.
[839]
It feels like it's a, hard
thing to do right now.
[841]
Though, in other news,
[842]
we should talk about president Biden's
[844]
$4.1 trillion Build Back
Better infrastructure proposal,
[847]
clearing a major procedural
hurdle in the Senate yesterday.
[849]
With the Senate agreeing 67 to 32
[851]
to open formal debate
on one part of the plan.
[853]
So what we're gonna see is that the Senate
[854]
will now continue to mold an unfinished
[856]
$550 billion infrastructure spending bill
[859]
that Republican and Democratic negotiators
[861]
have spent weeks working on.
[861]
With the bill being tailored
[863]
towards improving roads, bridges,
[864]
and expanding broadband
internet nationwide,
[866]
all of which has wide bi-partisan support.
[868]
Especially as much of the
country's infrastructure
[870]
is a half a century old and
[872]
engineers are worried about
its long-term stability.
[874]
Now, the bill is still undergoing
revisions, negotiations,
[876]
but it is expected to
pump around $110 billion
[879]
of new funding for surface
transportation projects,
[881]
73 billion to upgrading
power infrastructure,
[884]
65 billion for high speed
internet nationwide,
[886]
and 55 billion for expanding
access to clean drinking water.
[889]
But then also having some
other more niche plans,
[891]
such as building a nationwide network
[892]
for charging electric vehicles.
[893]
But at this point, you may have noticed,
[895]
I started by saying 4.1 trillion
[898]
and then said 550 billion.
[900]
Huge discrepancy.
[900]
Also part of the reason
why not everyone is happy.
[903]
The Republicans were largely okay
[904]
with spending hundreds
of billions of dollars
[906]
to improve key aspects of
American infrastructure.
[908]
But they alongside some moderate Dems,
[910]
heavily disagreed about
spending another $3.5 trillion
[913]
on other things that Biden wanted to pass.
[914]
Things like expanding healthcare coverage,
[916]
creating jobs and improving
social safety nets.
[918]
And so with that, you might ask yourself,
[919]
"Okay, so is it dead?
[921]
Does Biden plan to get
the money somewhere else?"
[923]
And you know, one possible
way is reconciliation,
[925]
a procedure that allows
budget bills to be passed
[927]
with a simple majority vote
in the Senate once a year.
[929]
But that also has its own issues,
[930]
and could be a major roadblock for many.
[932]
Republicans may back out
[933]
of the unfinished $550
billion infrastructure bill
[936]
if there's a 3.5 trillion
reconciliation package
[938]
coming right behind it.
[939]
Also, you might not even have the votes
[941]
of a simple majority
for that 3.5 trillion.
[943]
Or more moderate Dems, such
as Senator Kyrsten Sinema,
[945]
saying she has, "Made clear that
[946]
while I support beginning this process,
[948]
I do not support a bill
that costs 3.5 trillion."
[950]
Right, and so then,
[951]
potentially another hurdle
[952]
is in the House of Representatives.
[953]
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said that
[955]
while she is optimistic about
the infrastructure bill,
[957]
she has said that she won't
even let the house hear it
[959]
until the $3.5 trillion
reconciliation bill
[961]
has also been passed.
[962]
So, you know, fun.
[964]
And ultimately with this story,
[965]
or really anything else
that stood out to you today,
[966]
I'd love to know your thoughts
[967]
because, yes, this is a new show,
[969]
but it's also a conversation, right?
[970]
Between friends and or frenemies.
[972]
But with that said, as always,
[974]
hit that like button,
subscribe, all the good stuff.
[976]
Remember, Monday we have
that new drop coming,
[979]
but of course, my name is Philip DeFranco.
[981]
You've just been filled in,
[982]
I love yo faces, and
I'll see you next time.
