Rep. Raskin: GOP Message About Debt And Deficit Is ‘Tired, Old Rhetoric’ | Stephanie Ruhle | MSNBC - YouTube

[0]
what is your sense here when it comes to
[2]
this two thousand dollar direct pay i
[3]
mean if you're
[4]
you're a family of four that is a huge
[6]
jump and could be a major boost to your
[8]
household right for two adults
[10]
you're gonna get two thousand dollars a
[12]
piece that's four thousand dollars if
[13]
you have two children essentially
[15]
you would then subsequently get twelve
[17]
hundred dollars extra
[18]
that could help a lot it would
[22]
help a lot of people hugely and
[25]
beyond that we had the new legislation
[29]
apply to all family dependents whether
[32]
or not
[33]
you're under 18. so that includes you
[35]
know millions and millions of young
[37]
people who are off in college and
[38]
struggling under their
[40]
college loans and so on um so
[43]
this is you know the two thousand
[44]
dollars is meaningful legislation
[46]
that would make uh a vast difference for
[50]
tens of millions of people in the
[52]
country and so
[54]
the senate republicans are now caught
[56]
between
[57]
their rhetoric of you know right-wing
[60]
austerity for the wealthiest people
[62]
uh in the country to rule over everybody
[64]
else and then
[65]
their cultish impulse to follow whatever
[67]
donald trump tells them to do it will be
[69]
fascinating to see
[70]
where they go but meantime what hangs in
[72]
the balance is uh the fortunes of
[74]
millions and millions of people in the
[75]
country
[76]
who are waiting to see whether they're
[77]
going to get this meaningful infusion
[81]
so are you willing to make a prediction
[82]
on what's going to happen in the senate
[84]
here well uh
[88]
the word among republicans at least the
[90]
ones who are willing to talk to
[92]
democrats yesterday
[93]
uh was that mcconnell wants to use this
[96]
moment
[98]
to declare his independence from uh
[100]
donald trump
[101]
to say he's been re-elected for another
[103]
six years donald trump is on his way out
[106]
and this might be their moment to uh
[109]
you know to remove the republican party
[112]
from the direct
[113]
authoritarian control of donald trump
[115]
we'll see whether or not that happens
[117]
he's obviously threatening people
[118]
and claiming credit for people's
[120]
elections but
[122]
so far they've walked the plank with
[124]
donald trump for the last four years and
[125]
that's why
[126]
this really is a moment of reckoning for
[128]
their party
[129]
i mean this this moment this moment when
[132]
millions upon millions of americans were
[134]
struggling not the moment when it was
[135]
appropriate to declare joe biden the
[137]
president-elect
[138]
when you had a free and fair election
[139]
when joe biden had won the election yet
[141]
mitch mcconnell not stepping out
[143]
and separating himself from the
[144]
president and declaring joe biden the
[145]
president like
[146]
wanting to use this moment uh with
[149]
americans that are struggling that
[150]
cannot pay their rent that cannot put
[152]
food on the table you know so i was
[153]
scratching my head thinking
[154]
why is it they can't get on board with
[156]
this thing i know how republicans feel
[158]
about
[159]
uh the voting debt right but the wall
[161]
street journal editorial board
[163]
essentially summed it up for me
[165]
and i want to read for you well let me
[167]
let me just read for you a a quote from
[169]
the wall street journal editorial board
[170]
they said this never
[171]
mind that the 2000 would go to tens of
[173]
millions of americans who have kept
[174]
their jobs and maintain their incomes
[175]
during the pandemic
[177]
it would also add some 350 billion or
[179]
more to a federal deficit that is
[181]
already into the trillions of dollars
[182]
the economy won't benefit
[184]
since the recipients aren't going to
[185]
change their behavior knowing it's
[186]
merely a one-time check i mean
[189]
this doesn't make any sense giving fifty
[192]
two hundred dollars to a family of four
[194]
would actually help the economy and
[195]
encourage them to then spend imagine
[198]
for a moment had they gotten this money
[201]
before the christmas holiday
[203]
do you think they'd be out spending
[204]
especially for those that are actually
[206]
still
[206]
employed it doesn't mean just because
[208]
you have a job
[209]
you have job security in an uncertain
[212]
economy
[213]
look they care about deaths and deficit
[217]
only when the spending would help the
[219]
vast majority of working people in the
[222]
country
[222]
but when it's about giveaways to the
[224]
wealthiest people in the country and the
[225]
wealthiest corporations
[227]
they never utter a peep about debts and
[229]
deficits and we've seen
[230]
giveaways of a trillion and a half
[232]
dollars in their terrible tax plan we
[235]
saw it in 160 billion dollars
[237]
in the last round of federal aid that
[239]
they tucked in
[240]
all of these uh tax giveaways to the
[243]
wealthiest people
[244]
so it's only when you start talking
[246]
about investing
[247]
in the majority of the working people
[249]
that uh they begin
[251]
their tired old rhetoric about deficits
[253]
and debt and so on
[254]
they don't really care about it and
[256]
that's been established by the trump
[257]
administration
